While we're having a Beth Hart lovefest, let me add one of my favorites. I'm such a sucker for a great melody, this one hooked me right away. Not many singers could sing a song this rangey. But Beth just sings the h**l out of it, like she does everything:

"...like she does everything..."
I can't think of a song that I didn't like when she's doing the singing!
Thanks for putting up the links, Jox. I know at least one other person who will follow...right, K??

Last night, we went to see an acoustic guitar duo at a small venue here in town. The fabulous guitar playing father/son team was accompanied Michael Anne Erlewine, a woman singer/songwriter/guitarist. She had a very sweet, almost hypnotizing voice, which to me, sounded like Edie Brickell. She even looked like an older, blonder Edie. And a line from one of her original songs, "I dig you as deep as a wishing well", reminded me of a song I loved back in the late eighties....or was it the early nineties; I forgot exactly, but it sometime in the pre-LX days.
Whenever it was released, Edie's sound was so different than anything else out at the time....or at least, anything else I ever heard.
I found what I was looking for on YouTube: Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians performing "What I Am"
I wonder what ever happened to them.

Came across these on youtube tonight. If the kids ever ask you what the big deal was about Whitney Houston, show them:
Here's young Whitney in '86. Just listen to that voice. All that dancing, working the whole stage, and she's still has the breath and strength to nail all the notes:
Here's from a year later. This may the most amazing live performance I've ever heard. You've heard athletes say they "left it all on the field"? That's what Whitney does here. She just gives it all she has. I know it's long. But watch and listen to the whole thing. The way she caresses each note, and interprets every phrase, the way the passion builds. It's extraordinary.
And finally, Whitney at her peak of beauty, fame, and showmanship. She has total control of the stage. Such charisma and star power. God, what a voice. And the moment when she takes the flowers from the sailor, and backs away, still looking at him, is just so sweet.

This weekend was Blueberry Fest, which means free music Friday and Saturday nights down on the lawn at the marina. Small towns such as ours don't have the funding to bring in the big names. In the past, head-liners were old bands nobody knew were still around anymore....such bands as The Guess Who, Loverboy (bluck!), and Blue Oyster Cult. A couple of years in a row with duds, and after The All Stars of Rock featuring a guy from Iron Butterfly bombed when half the crowd left during "Inna Godda Da Vida", (we left in the middle of the song, and I think it was still playing when we got home after walking five blocks), they turned to tribute bands.
At this year's Blueberry Fest an Eagles tribute band was playing Friday, and Saturday's band was an AC/DC band from Tennessee, called "Big Gun". I've never been a big AC/DC fan; it's more Hubs' type of music. I would have much rather seen the Eagles tribute, but it was raining Friday so we didn't go. It's customary though, for the whole town to turn out Saturday no matter who's playing - you end up seeing everyone you know....or ever knew here. Even if the music is horrible, it's a chance to catch up with what's been going on with people.
"Big Gun" wasn't bad - they were quite good actually, and played songs everyone knew the words to for two hours non-stop. People were really getting into it, singing along, raising their fists in the air, and dancing where they could find space on the packed lawn. LX ran around with her group of friends, and BP stayed with us, enjoying the show. Hubs and I were just having a good time watching the older people get totally into songs they knew from their youth. It was too funny watching them really, acting like they were teenagers again at some sold-out rock show. Funnier still was when we realized that we were a couple of those "older people".

Love that video for "Warrior In Me". What a treat for all us Callisto fans! I have uttered many a snicker, watching Hudson's vivid performances. She was terrific. While watching an old Red Skelton movie today, I discovered this wonderful musician, Hazel Scott. Was surprised to learn that it was she, and NOT Nat "King" Cole, who was the first Black person to have a network tv show. When you see how lovely and poised she was, as well as immensely talented, you'll know why the Dumont tv network featured her back then. (I would KILL to have a speaking voice as pleasant as hers!) What a shame that the "Red Scare" of the 1950s brought her career to a premature end. Here's an article with more info. I need to read that book! www.mlive.com/entertainment/kalamazoo/index.ssf/2009/02/forgotten_woman_in_black_histo.htmlHalle Berry makes so many dreadful movies. Why doesn't she do her fans, and Black history, a favor, and do a film about this fascinating woman?

Ellie Greenwich has passed away. She was the co-writer, along with Phil Spector, of some of the greatest hits of the '60s, including, "Leader of the Pack", "Going To The Chapel", "Be My Baby", "River Deep, Mountain High", "Da Doo Ron Ron", "Do Wah Diddy", and "Hanky Panky". She also wrote a tune I can't get through the holidays without, the one David Letterman has Darlene Love perform on his show every December, "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)". What a legacy she leaves behind. www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2009/08/26/be-my-baby-songwriter-ellie-greenwich-dead-at-68/

My gosh, she did have an impact. I love that Christmas song too. You think she ever got much in terms of royalties as a songwriter in that era? Susanna Hoffs (age 50!!!!) has teamed up with Matthew Sweet and done a couple of cover albums, the first '60's tunes and the second '70's. Came across this interview and was intrigued enough to check out a video. I very much enjoyed both. I sorta-kinda knew, TG; the radio station I listen to has been playing "Jars" for the last week or so. Thanks for posting the link to the preview of songs. Based on the short blurb, I'm loving the way "Highland's Apparition" is sounding. Oh! and that's my current music news: I'm outta Top 40, Country, Talk Radio, and Static Hell. There's a new station in town! Actually, it's far from town; it broadcasts from Chicago and Wisconsin, hence its call letters, WILL Rock. Why am I able to pick up this station all the way here in Michigan? I dunno, but I'm loving it. Check out the current line-up. www.mediabase.com/whatsong/whatsong.asp?var_s=087073073076045070077
