My Mom is the Sunday School Treasurer at church and I go around counting people and collecting the money. Sunday (May 20th) the 'Ladies' class were having a discussion when I went in. (They're in their 70s, 80s, 90s.) I didn't hear the whole thing, but someone had a nurse for a cousin or some such, and this nurse told them to put a bar of soap under their bed. It's helps a restless sleeper get to sleep.
One woman said her bar of soap didn't work under her bed, so she put it between the sheets. (Probably down at the foot of the bed.) Anyhoo, she said it also helped with her aches and pains, and she was able to get to sleep. One woman said she had laughed and made fun when she was told to try it, but then found it really worked. They said not to use deodorant soap, or anti-bacterial soap, but just plain ole soap. One uses Ivory, the other Dove.
I decided to Google and see what I could find:

The bar of soap is only suppose to work for about 6 months, and then you replace it with a new bar of soap. Yesterday I discovered what I could do with the old bars of soap:

Hey Phalon, during this search I found two sites that might interest you:

This is got to be one of the strangest home remedies I've heard, soap bar none. Not going to get worked into a lather 'til I try it and see for myself; no trouble sleeping, but maybe it'll keep my dreams clean.
The Mommy Needs Coffee site looks fun, but my computer is yelling at me and making all kinds of racket, when I click on the link. It's having trouble loading it.

Oh, so it's not just my computer? Good; I thought the old gal's arthritis was acting up again with all those creaks and groans.

My computer doesn't creak and groan, but it takes a while for the pages to load.

Thanks for the tip Mini Mia, I didn't have a bar so used liquid soap instead, it didnt stop me waking up during the night, but I had lovely clean feet this morning! LOL

You're very welcome. I guess liquid is different from solid, so that's why it didn't work.

Soaps make me sleep. They all seem to have the same problems, perfect people sleeping around at the soap bars with everyone and thing under the sun.
Oh, soaps, right, I knew that.

Yep, soaps always do seem to end up in bed; the Irish Springs in the mattress creaking. What a Life, Buoy.
Vox, you can do some double-duty there. Clean feet, and clean laundry; just be sure to add fabric softener during the proper dream cycle.

Now why didn't I think of that Phalon! good idea!
no seriously, I did give it a try with the ol bar of soap, and the first night I slept really well, don't even remember wakiing up, that's got to be a first for me, I usualy have to get up to visit the toilet at least once a night, some nights even twice! so I guess there may be some truth behind that old wives tale!.

If doctors would test out the old wives tales and found which ones really worked we could save a lot of money that's wasted on the drug companies. I'd rather not use drugs if there's a less toxic way to combat an illness. I know that it's been proven that chicken soup does work for colds and sinus problems by helping open your head up.
I only take Vitamin C or eat high-acidic fruits to get rid of a bladder infection. It works just as well, and I don't feel foggy-headed or drugged.

I talked with Mom on the phone this evening. Thelda, (she talks about her friends with me as if I know them and they were my friends too)....Thelda, it seems, was having problems with leg cramps during the night. Do you know what she tried?
"Soap?" I asked.
"Soap?"
"Yeah, Joxie, (I talk about you all as if she knows you), mentioned soap is not only for cleansing anymore; it's a nice bed companion also."
"Oh? Hhmmmm...." But it wasn't soap Thelda tried. Someone's daughter's niece's nephew - or some such acquaintance - told her that putting salt on your tongue stops the cramping. Thelda now sleeps with a shaker of salt.
The salt I might try; I get horrible cramps in my ex-runner's knees during cold weather.
Hope Hubs doesn't mind me keeping another bed companion.

I've been getting cramps all over of late, so I'll try to remember the salt next time one strikes me.

Another sleepless 'old wives tale'
When making the bed, don't interrupt your work, or you will spend a restless night in it.
I'd love to know who thought that one up!

This really does work. My knees haven't bothered me in quite a while.
