Stargate SG – 1 has some intriguing changes lined up for its 9 th year and one change is the reintroduction of Vala the mysterious intergalactic con artist played by Farscape’s Claudia Black. Vala is reintroduced as part of the opening six-episode story arc, which introduces us to the new members of the SG – 1 team as well as a new enemy that threatens the galaxy. Fans in the USA and Canada will have already seen Claudia Black in the opening six episodes and already know how tricky a character she is, but that did not stop Claudia Black from discussing the six episode story arc with Starburst Magazines Steven Eramo.
“What’s interesting with her six – story arc is that just when you think you’re peeling away another layer of the character, she’ll flip everything on it’s head again, which I believe is just part of her survival mechanism. So she’s intriguing to me. At the same time, there’s a potential for the character to become a one – trick pony. I was lucky, though, in that she was important to the story. Vala drives the story foreword in the beginning because she brings the adventure to them, the SG – 1 team, even though she’s not part of the group.”
Although the cast has taken on some fairly major changes for the 9 th season of the show, Black revealed that it is still a good group to work with.
“One of the most memorable things for me is the spirit of the cast and crew. Everyone was extremely enthused about starting their ninth season with some new people in the mix, and I was very taken by their positive outlook.”
As fans will know Vala left the show after the initial six episodes in somewhat of a fiery way, but it has been left very much open ended for Vala to return as Black readily points out.
“The producers have left it in such a way that its possible to bring her back if my schedule permits and if it appropriately fits their story,” notes Black. “I as an actor and Vala as a character are at our best when we’re heavily involved in the action. Michael Shanks would often joke with me and say I was spending all my time chewing the scenery and milking absolutely everything, but you kind of need to know what Vala is thinking and doing all the time because she reveals so little of herself.”
Since this interview it has been revealed that Claudia Black will indeed be returning as Vala. You can read much more of what Black had to share about Vala and her involvement in Stargate SG – 1’s 9 th season in issue 328 of Starburst Magazine.
