THE ZENA SCROLLS: CHAPTER I ------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE ZENA SCROLLS zena - 10:43pm Apr 23, 2002 ET "Agere Sequitur Esse"
<Unrolls scroll>
The sun was just rising over Cyrene's roof when Zena slipped out of the big wooden door to the Inn. The grass still held the promise of a cool dewy day and only the rooster in the yard was awake. Her horse has already been saddled and she slung her bag with the provisions over the saddle horn. "Those dried lima beans will give me several dinners" she thought as she left Amphipolis by the northern road.
The monthly Amazon Pig Roast at Cyrene's was always a welcome break from the hardships of the road and a chance to catch up on all the news. The party had gone on into the pre dawn hours with everyone singing and dancing on the tables. Three barrels of meade were dry and the pig was just a memory. Next month she would suggest that chicken might be on the menu - less greasy.
As she mulled over these thoughts Zena became aware that someone was riding hard behind her and would soon be at her side. She reached for her sword as Evergreen pulled her horse up just behind her.

Evergreen was thankful that Zena recognized her when she did. After the late night gathering, senses are dull, and with the morning light, the realization comes that life must go on and challenges of the day await. Evergreen's painted pony trots along side Zena who continues to hum a restful tune from the night before. As the dawn begins its ascent, Evergreen greets Zena. "Good morning. May I ride with you for awhile?", Evergreen says with a smile and a nod of her head. Zena notes that Evergreen's dark chestnut hair is filling with silver, but knows the heart of her friend is forever green and does not change when the the winter wind has turned all else to brown. The morning air is cool and filled with the scent of villagers beginning their breakfast fires. The woods once more become alive with the noise of the life contained in its sheltering harbor. Zena and Evergreen ride side by side speaking of the enjoyment of the gathering of Xena's clan at Cyrene's. As the horses fall into their steady cadence with leather saddles creaking and riders rocking side to side, another figure appears on the horizon. From seemingly out of the breaking sun itself, a rider is bounding down the hill, waving arms, and sword flashing. Evergreen says to Zena, "Something is up, that looks like Lucystar, what could THIS be about?"
------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lucystar1 - 03:32am Apr 26, 2002 ET (#2 & 3 of 330) AS THE SCROLL UNROLLS
As the sun rises to welcome the new day, it's rays catch the cream-colored mare with black mane and tail and her dark-haired rider. The mare cocks an ear back listening to the mutterings of her rider. "THAT is the LAST time I escort a bunch of hungover Amazons home. They're great fun a parties, especially after a few ales, but DAMN, they can get moody when it wears off." Lucystar shakes head swearing that that is the last time Evergreen volunteers her as an "escort service", chuckling, "that kind anyway." She did have to admit the pig roast was her idea and what's a party without the Amazons, AND they all did have a great time, but gods what a headache. Lucystar looks up realizing she's almost home and thanks the gods her mare knows the way.
She's suddenly aware of a melody that has been weaving it's way through her brain for most of the way home and starts singing to herself. "Sisters are doin' for themselves. Standing on their own two feet. Ringing on their own bells."Lucystar slaps her forehead to stop the music as she remember the previous night's events. How many times DID they sing that song? Enough that the Amazons declared it their Nation's anthem. "I can't believe Saxy got us all in the hot tub for a special 'performance'. I thought the sides where going to split out. Cyrene would have my hide over that one." Closing her eyes as the song starts in her head again, she remembers the hot tub scene and cringes. "By the gods, I wish I were home in bed dreaming of...never mind." she sighs.
Without warning her mare jerks her head up. "Easy girl, what is it?" Now Lucystar is aware of what interrupted her daydreaming. She hears the pounding hoofbeats of a horse bearing down on her from behind. Unsheathing her sword, she spins the mare around, ready for battle, only to find herself starring at a man in tattered clothes riding out of control right at her. Using herself as a barricade she calls out "Whoa. Easy there. SLOW DOWN!" Then grabs the horse's reins as it skids to a stop beside her. The man, out of breath and shaking, tries to tell her something. "Hey, take it easy. Here, have a drink of water." As he does, she eyes him, but he doesn't look familiar. "Now, take a breath and tell me what's got you riding like Hades is on your tail." As he hands back the empty waterskin, he take a deep breath. "I'm looking for Xena. We need her help. Where is she?" Each statement his eyes get bigger and his voice louder. "Calm down!" Lucystar holds her head praying the ache will go away. "Xena and Gabrielle left several days ago to attend the Annual Athens City Academy of the Performing Bards Reunion. Gabby is being honored for her..." She stops as the man starts shaking and shouting at her. "Our caravan was attacked by a bunch of bandits! They got all our merchandise, including a wagon of weapons, GET IT! They'll be heading this way next." Startled, Lucystar gathers her wits as an image enters her mind. "OK, how far away are they? How much time do we have?" The man relaxes a little thinking maybe there's hope yet. "At least a half day's ride back but they will probably camp for a while, at least. We had several kegs of ale in the caravan and they were drinking up. That's how I got away.
Remembering the lessons Xena taught her, Lucystar turns her attentions back to the merchant. "You ride back and keep an eye on the bandits. Stay out of sight, gather as much information as you can, and by the gods, DON'T get caught." As the man agrees to do his part, Lucystar looks toward home. "I'm going to go get some friends of mine and we'll come back and stop these thugs. We may not have Xena's 'many skills', but together we can be a force not to be reckoned with." They both turn away to begin their tasks. As Lucystar urges the mare into a gallop she offers up a small prayer. "Please let Zena and Evergreen still be at the Inn. I'll need their help. Theirs and Saxy's." The image of a very drunk Saxy chasing the barmaid around the bar pops into her head. Despite the impending danger, Lucystar can't stop the grin spreading across her face and laughs out loud "Knowing Saxy, she's probably still passed out in bed."
As horse and rider top the rise, she sees the Inn and recognizes the two riders just starting to head out. Waving her sword as she rides down to them, she calls "Zena. Evergreen. Wait there, I need your help!" As she approaches them she askes "Where's Saxy? Still in bed?" They both nod as Lucystar jumps off her horse and runs up the steps into the Inn. At the bottom of the stairs leading up to the sleeping rooms, she yells up. "Saxy. Wake Up! Get your butt out of bed and get down here! We've got TROUBLE!" Lucystar turns to see Zena and Evergreen come in the door as Saxy stumbles down the stairs, rubbing sleep from her eyes. "What's all the racket? Gods, Lucystar, can't a body get some sleep around here?" Lucystar gives her the evil eye and begins to tell about her encounter with the merchant on the road. Finishing Lucystar, Zena and Evergreen all turn and look at Saxy. They know she is the better warrior. They all studied with Xena, but Saxy was a natural. By the expression emerging on Saxy's face, it dawns on her why they're looking at her like that. Then Lucystar, doing her best Gabrielle impression complete with waggling eyebrows says "So Saxy... What's the Plan?"

------------------------------------------------------------------------ saxgoddess25 - 07:39am Apr 26, 2002 ET (#4 & 5 of 330) And now to our reporter in the field...Saxy!
The first rays of dawn sunlight were streaming through the room's small window when Saxy awoke with a start. That old falling dream again. Rolling onto her back, she peered up at the ceiling through bleary eyes, thanking the Gods one more time that she didn't get hangovers. Saddly, she remembered everything that happened the night before...not that she was especially proud of half the stuff she'd done. Oh, come on, you know it was pretty damn funny. Especially that bit with the hot tub. And the food fight was brilliant. The work of a prankster is never done. A smile touched her lips as her companion stirred and draped an arm across her chest. Saxy pulled the furs up more snugly around them and began to drift back off to sleep, wrapped in a fuzzy haze of contentment.
She would have sworn it had only been a few seconds when she heard a voice bellow up the stairs. Instantly awake, her hand reached out automatically for the hilt of her sword, lying on the floor. She sprung out of bed and rushed for the door, realizing at the last moment that she was stark naked. While the Celts might prefer to fight in only a torc and a pair of sandals, Saxy was a bit more pragmatic than that. Pausing a moment to pull on a pair of breeches and tunic, then stamping into her soft doeskin boots, she stumbled her way out of the room and down the stairs. "Can't these bloody morning people let a girl sleep for once?" she growled to herself about halfway down. Recognizing the source of all the yelling as Lucystar, Saxy rubbed her eyes and peered at her newly appointed second and favourite hostess. "What's all the racket? Gods, Lucystar, can't a body get some sleep around here?" Saxy listened while Lucystar told her of the merchant on the road and his plight with the bandits. Her eyes narrowed at the mention of the cartload of weapons. Lost in thought, she suddenly realized that the other three were staring at her. Oh Hades. They expect me to come up with a plan, this early in the morning. Grrr. Think brain, think. Lucystar confirmed her own thoughts with a lecherous wiggle of her eyebrows. "So Saxy... What's the Plan?" "How long did you say we had again?" "Maybe a day, or a little more. Depending on how long those kegs of ale last." "Great. Enough time for me to change. Zena and Evergreen, let Cyrene and the town elders know what's up and tell them to prepare for those bandits to come through here...just in case. Lucystar, you get some more of the girls that stayed here last night to come with us. I'm sure you know exactly who to drag along." The three women nodded and moved off to their respective tasks. Saxy turned and remounted the stairs only to pull up short. "Lucystar...would you mind having someone saddle my horse?" she called across the common room.
"No problem Boss!" was the reply. With a grunt Saxy climbed up to her room. Once there, she retrieved her armour from the chair beside the bed and slipped it quickly on. She took a moment to run a comb through her mass of coppery brown hair, fastening it back with a thong so that it was out of her eyes. Finally she settled her breast dagger in place with a small grin as an image of Lucystar oogling it popped into her head. Fastening her quiver opposite her sword, she picked up her hunter's bow. Back downstairs and out the front door, she halted. A large group of warriors and townfolk who had been aprised of the situation stood awaiting her. Everyone looked at Saxy as she stopped on the porch, one hand on the pommel of her longsword. "Everyone knows what their job is?" The query was met by nods all around. "Good. You warriors, come with me. The rest of you, be ready in case we fail." Her tone made it clear that she didn't expect that to happen. Moving briskly to her black mare, she vaulted into the saddle. The horse frisked a few steps before Saxy's gentle hand on her neck quieted her. "Shhhh, easy A'Mira," she cooed to the animal. Once everyone was astride their mounts, she gave the signal to move out. To one side of the assembled group of warriors she spotted a familiar face. It was Donna, one of the Amazons' best scouts. Some women spoke of her as THE Donna. Saxy reined in next to her with a nod. "Well Donna, what do you think?"

"Saxy, with this much Amazon power we'll have no problem taking these bandits down."
I sat proudly in the saddle thinking how amazing these women are. The power and passion was a force no evil could ever defeat. But still I felt a bit of nervous excitement at the thought of an impending clash. There's something to be said for starting your day off kicking butt.
As we began our ride, I could feel the after affects of a night spent with good friends and stout mead. I'd had far too much fun - that was for sure. My head throbbed and my eyes felt out of focus, but there was also the pleasant sensation of a stomach sore from too much laughter. There's much to be said for a night spent actually feeling *alive* and content with who you are and who you surround yourself with.
As we neared the fork in the road we were met by a strange silence. Our horses stopped dead in their tracks and I knew it was time for the scout in me to take over. I gave Saxy the signal to wait as I ventured forth solo to investigate. My trusty steed, Sir Lard Butt (LB for short) gracefully maneuvered the path covered with small branches. This was obviously a trap. The signs were clear and I knew we had found the right path.
I looked over my shoulder and waved a quick signal to our fearless leader to let her know we were on the right path and that silence was essential if we were to make this a suprise attack. I gave a look above to see if there were vines or other methods for dropping down on enemies. Wait! Something moved up there! That's no bird or creature of the forest. It's a ... did Cyane see it too?

...Did Cyane see it too?
Riding in the back of the pack, as she always does, Cyane kept a close eye on her comrades ahead. She also kept one ear perked for trouble from behind. Nothing was left to chance, when the Amazon's were on the case. As the leader of the pack, Saxy slowed. Cyane saw The Donna venture forth to use those keen senses of hers.(The rest of the Amazon nation was in awe of her sense for danger, hence her name.) As Cyane watched, Donna stopped up short and stared intently into the trees. Just then, something caught Cyane's eye. High in the tree, just to the left...movement! The Donna quickly swung around in her saddle and shot Cyane a glance. Yes, they HAD both seen it. It was not imagination on either part. What was that? From her vantage point, Cyane could only see vague movement. Someone would have to go check it out. With a nod to Donna, Cyane slipped silently, and hopefully, unnoticed from her saddle. Tossing the reins to the nearest Amazon, with a slight smirk on her face and a mischevious twinkle in her hazel eyes, she adjusted the scabbard and sword on her back. Cyane crept quietly into the forrest. Keeping one eye on her friends and the other ahead in the forrest, she leapt into the nearest Mandrake tree. Creeping forward towards the last place she saw the movement, Cyane saw a hooded figure, crouched one a branch, 3 trees over. Cyane gave one last glance into the forrest and jumped. Coming down on the branch behind the mystery person, she grabbed the hooded figure and spun them around. Cyane was suddenly fact to face with...The LURKER SUE!

:::::: LURK :::::::
Please... I mean you no harm. I'm just a poor lost soul desperately lurking in the woods for signs to my way home. I became separated from my fellow villagers when I walked off the path in search of food. When I returned they had all mysteriously vanished.
I have been hiding in these trees since then, fearing for my life yet too afraid to venture out in fear I may succomb to the same power that caused my village to vanish.
Please do not harm me, I pray for you to help me find my way safely back to the village of Cyranese. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ EvergreenLM - 07:20pm Apr 26, 2002 ET (#10 of 330) "To Conquer Others is to Know Power...to Conquer Yourself is to Know the Way"
SAFELY BACK
Evergreen, although longing for a good fight, hears Sue's plea and weighs out the greater good, the right thing to do, and trots her horse, Whisperer, along side the Mandrake tree. Evergreen leans down from the saddle and offers Sue an arm up and a ride back to her village. Cyranese was a fair distance from where they now stood, and Evergreen new that an element of risk presented itself in riding back without the benefit of protection from her kindred warriors. Evergreen took compassion on Sue and knew that all did not posses the heart of a warrior. It was the gentle souls of the world that balanced the evil and gives the warriors the courage to fight another day. Xena had taught them well, and all that follows her knows the one true path.
Evergreen moves Whisperer along side the others. "I have decided to take Sue back and try to find her family. You all are needed here and I will go this one alone. I will return to you and join in the fight." Saxy looks at Evergreen thinking "THAT one eats lima beans. What kind of warrior does that!" LucyStar reminds Saxy that wisdom sometimes out fights a 100 swords while pointing out the many battle scars Evergreen carries. "Saxy, I WILL fight by your side and it will take us all to win". "Goodbye Zena, Donna, see you when I see you". With a quick turn and a "Yah!", Evergreen gallops off with Sue clinging behind.
Just as Evergreen clears the valley, Evergreen feels a tap on the shoulder. EG tries to ignore it as as she wishes to soon return to the impending battle. Again a tap,but this time much more insistent. "Evergreen!" "What DO you want?", Evergreen says with gentle annoyance. "Whoa, Whisperer". Sue leans in close and quietly says,"Someone is following us. I have seen them skirting the woods for the last few miles". EG helps Sue down, dismounts, and draws her sword bejeweled with emeralds shaped as lima beans. The silver flashes in the sunlight and as Evergreen turns, she hears a "SWOOSH!". An arrow finds its mark and Evergreen drops to her knees. " Sue, take my horse, go, ride away as fast as you can!" Sue, not looking back, hits the saddle, and with a kick, is gone. Slumping to the ground, Evergreen looks up. And as she begins to loose consciousness, a familiar voice is heard calling her name. As Evergreen drifts into darkess,a figure appears, and with bloodied hand raised, she softly cries,"Xena?". The hand drops, and Evergreen hears no more...

Saxy watched Evergreen and Sue ride off into the forest. Hmmm. Putting words into my head again are we? Well. Who likes lima beans anyway? Her eyes were full of mischief for a moment before the seriousness of the matter returned. "Godspeed my friend. May you return to us swiftly and safely."
Stretching her long arms over her head and twisting to work the kinks out of her back, she considered the situation. One less warrior in the band. A few hours from Amphipolis and many more to ride. She sighed.
"Well, let's not sit around here then. Let's ride." Motioning her scout back into the lead, Saxy urged her mount forward again. She couldn't help the feeling of foreboding that swept over her as they moved out.

Friend or Foe
Having never ridden with this group of Amazons I was unsure of my role as we tracked the trail of Evergreen and Oxysue in the woods. I was taken a back when the news of the attack reached us. We were quickly being thrust into battle without even a word.
As we found Evergreen's unconscious body I stood there frozen, lost in my own selfish thoughts" This could of been me !What they think of me if I fail in battle?" Fortunately, my train of thought was quickly broken. With the snap of a twig the unmistakable sound of swords simultaneously being unsheathed filled the forest. There standing before Cyane and the Donna was the mysterious woman OxySue! Bombarded with questions and threatened with a dozen or more swords pointed at her expressionless face.
As she regaled the group with her story of the attack, I looked around trying to read the expressions on the faces of the other Amazons. As I carefully studied each face. I could see many sets of narrowing eyes and scornful faces. I interpeted their telltale signs of disbelief as a desire to take her prisoner and interrogate her.
However, there were a handful of eyes that had softened and even grown a little moist during her tale of the attack and of Evergreen's heroic act. I figured they would want to feed her and release her. Something about this lost soul OxySue spoke to me... and caused me to take leave of my common senses and Amazon protocol .
Without saying a word or seeking permission I simply pointed to my necklace and then looked at OxySue essentially asking OxySue join the group. Suddenly all eyes were staring at me, I had overstepped my role in the group..I looked searchingly over at Saxy for now she had the fates of both OxySue and mine in her hands...As leader and Queen the decision was now hers as to what to do with OxySue and me...

------------------------------------------------------------------------ saxgoddess25 - 09:53pm Apr 26, 2002 ET (#13 of 330) I have the soul of a bard and the heart of a warrior. My vengeance is swift and complete.
Saxy was riding at the front of the group, a short while after the encounter with the mysterious woman in the trees, when Donna came riding like a madwoman out of the forest. Having ranged ahead to scout, she'd come upon Sue alone, riding Evergreen's horse. After hearing the woman's frantic story, Donna had sent Sue back to do what she could for Evergreen with a warning to stay out of sight until she knew it was safe. Then Donna came back for the rest of the band.
Now as they rode out of the valley, they saw a form lying still on the dry grass. Jumping off A'mira before she'd even stopped, Saxy rushed to the fallen warrior's side. Evergreen was still breathing, this was good, but the breaths were shallow and slow. Suddenly behind her, she heard swords being drawn. Hand on the hilt of her own sword, she spun around to see Sue emerge from some covering shelter, leading Evergreen's mount.
Saxy listened impassively to the story and watched the expressions from her sister warriors. Then she saw one, she seemed to remember from a mead induced haze as Xwpfan, motion to her necklace and share a look with Sue. Both women turned to Saxy. The leader liked to think she was a fair woman, and there was nothing to prove that this mysterious Sue had turned on Evergreen. Bandits were known to frequent the area...it could have been bandits. Even so, Saxy still couldn't figgure out why her comrade had been attacked or by whom. She looked back at the prone woman. There were more pressing matters at hand.
Nodding her assent to Sue she offered the group's protection. Shooting Xwpfan a look that said "We will speak of this later," Saxy drew Lucystar aside. "We need to bandage her wounds and make sure she's okay. After that, we'll see. Do you think we can spare someone to take her back to Cyrene's?"

Kindred
"When every debt is marked and paid...when every road has had its stay, Just reach out your hand and call my name...and I will be bringing you home at last to stay..." (from CD Josh Groban)
I am walking on a beach with waves crashing to the shore. The sky is so blue and crisp.Birds swoop and dance with the sea. In the distance, atop the dunes, stand two figures. One tall and dark and the other tan, muscular, with hair the color of wheat under the summer sun.
I have no sword,no armor, and I look for my devoted horse, Whisperer. I am wrapped in soft burgandy. The sand feels warm to my shoeless feet. I am at peace. I am drawn to the two figures in the distance, and feel as if I can just reach them I will be home at last. The tall dark woman raises her hand with palm facing me. She, without uttering a word, is telling me to stop. The blonde one steps down from the dunes, gently touches my shoulder and whispers, "Listen".
I close my eyes and hear the familiar voices of beloved friends. The two figures fade and I am longing to go with them, but my heart tells me my scroll will go on. As I try to open my eyes,I am engulfed with pain. I feel the cool earth, and as I struggle to return to my life, I sense someone one kneeling nearby. I also sense there is another, a danger to us all,but I cannot speak. I wonder, where is my friend Zena? She will know, she will know.
------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lucystar1 - 03:02am Apr 27, 2002 ET (#15 of 330) CAN WE SPARE A WARRIOR?
Watching EG's face, I see it go very pale, then there seems to be a small smile on her lips. Is she seeing a family member or friend who has gone on before her? I continue to watch for signs, then I notice a faint blush color her face. She is returning to us and I thank the gods. It wasn't her time yet.
Just then Saxy draws me away from the group and asks if I think we can spare a warrior to take EG and Sue back to Cyrene's. I am suddenly struck with the realization that Saxy, Queen of the Amazons, is asking for my opinion. I am truly shocked by this honor. I am not an Amazon, though I have been friends with Saxy and the other members of her clan for years, and the significance of this is not something I take lightly. "Lucystar, did you hear me? What do you think?" Clearing my thoughts, I look at her "Sorry, I...I think that we can spare one warrior and it should be xwpfan. She believes that this person, Sue, can be trusted." As Saxy considers my words, I glance around at the other Amazons half expecting to see hostile looks because their Queen was asking my opinion. But instead, I only see friendly eyes smiling at me, waiting to hear what I have to say. Turning back to Saxy I see just a hint of a grin as she says "I think you're right, Lucystar. Xwpfan would be the best warrior to serve as escort for EG and Sue back to Cyrene's." I smile back at her, but a worried look crosses my face. "Saxy, how are we going to battle these thugs, now that we will be minus two of our warriors? We're small in number as it is." "Lucystar, are you forgetting who taught us ALL our battle skills and strategies. Remember Xena's lessons on how to win a battle even when you're outnumbered? We had the best teacher in the known world and we will win!"
The Amazons prepare a litter to carry our beloved warrior Evergreen back to the Inn where the healer can tend her wound. As they gently lift her and place her on the litter, I lean over and whisper "Heal quickly friend, we need you fighting by our side again." As an afterthought, "Besides, you're the only one who'll eat all those damn lima beans Cyrene has stocked up." As xwpfan and Sue start out with their precious cargo, I could have sworn I saw a mischievous grin touch the corners of EG's lips.
I turn to Saxy and grin "Say, don't we have a battle to win?"

Scouting Ahead.....
After Evergreen had ridden off with the Lurker Sue, Zena went on ahead to scout the bandit camp. The trail was rocky and seemed to lead straight up to wall that was as solid as any castle keep. Over the wall the smoke of cooking fires drifted slowly to the blue sky. She knew that it was time for quiet. Tying her horse Ergo to a tree in a nearby glen she continued alone to climb the hillside. "If I can just get a look at them and get an idea of how many there are I know Queen Saxy will have a plan", she thought. Suddenly the breeze brought a small sound likje a whisper. She listened intently as Xena had taught her, trying to determine the direction and source of the sound. Such a little sound, like a human voice but so faded, and familiar. The sound evaporated and she continued the climb again, pulling herself up to a ledge where she suddenly realized that she could see not only the enemy camp but the plain below. And there, near the glen where she had left Ergo were her Amazon sisters, but their numbers were diminished. Why wasn't her friend Evergreen back yet? She always stood beside Zena in a fight and kept her from rash decisions. And where was Xwpfan? Her skills are just emerging but she is always good to have with the band in battle. "ZENA", the voice was suddenly behind her. She turned too quickly to look for Evergreen and lost her footing tumbling down the wrong side of the hill toward the bandits. "By the gods, this is gonna make a heck of a scroll!", was Zena's last thought as she hurtled downward. On the plain below Lucystar looked up just in time to see Zena disappear head first into the camp of the ruffians!

------------------------------------------------------------------------ saxgoddess25 - 05:52am Apr 28, 2002 ET (#17 of 330) I have the soul of a bard and the heart of a warrior. My vengeance is swift and complete.
It was an uneventful ride for the group after Xwpfan departed with Sue and Evergreen. They made good time through the forest. For most of that time Saxy rode in silence, going over plans for the battle to come. Zena had gone off to scout the bandits themselves and Donna still ranged ahead of the group a ways and reported periodically.
Saxy reached up and pushed some stray hairs out of her eyes, a habit that she never managed to lose, even when she had tied it back. Starting to feel a bit hungry, she reached into the pouch at her belt and drew out a strip of dried meat. She was about to take a bite when her eyes narrowed. She peered at the jerky quizzically, then plucked off a stray lima bean. She was about to toss it aside when Evergreen's visage passed through her mind. With a small shrug Saxy popped the bean into her mouth. Yuk. I still don't like these things. Taking a swig from the waterskin at her waist (which didn't actually contain water, but rather was filled with the inn's finest mead) she proceeded to munch on her trail ration. She idly listened to the quiet conversations around her, but didn't really hear what the women were saying.
They were passing through a glen when she spotted Zena's horse. Saxy held up a hand to slow their progress and halt the discussion. If Zena's horse was here, the bandits couldn't be too far away. Silently they rode forward. Saxy's grey eyes scanned the land around them, finally spotting the warrior high up on the ledge in front of them. She saw Zena spin around, as if someone were behind her. Saxy gasped in horror as the amazon fell arse over tea-kettle down the wrong side of the embankment. Oh Gods! What has she gotten herself into now?! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ gabbyfan4ever - 05:02pm Apr 28, 2002 ET (#18 of 330)
The young warrior, little Gabbyfan, walked alone down the winding dirt path. She was looking for someone, anyone who could help her. Her village was completely destroyed by a group of bandits. She, the only survivor, was saved by luck. Gabbyfan was practicing with her staff in the nearby woods when the raid happened. Still in shock, and not yet letting her grief come through, Gabbyfan wanted to stop the bandits from hurting anyone else. But she knew she couldn't do it alone. She was young, and though trained by the great battling-bard Gabrielle herself, could not hope to stop the marauders alone.
She was heading for the only place she knew, besides home, Cyrene's tavern. She often stopped by there to see friends on her way between the Academy and home. Suddenly she saw a warrior on horseback coming down the road. But were they friend or foe? Gabbyfan quickly went into the woods on either side of the road. Peering out into the dirt path, she saw it was an Amazon, a friend. However, seeing the warrior was trying to be silent, Gabbyfan stayed in the woods, so as not to alert any enemies. Using all her warrior skills, Gabbyfan, followed the Amazon, who was now on foot. However, she could hear another noise, barely perceptible. Keeping her ear on both the mysterious noise, and the Amazon, she saw the women stop, and look over an embankment. All was quiet, until the unknown noise startled the Amazon and sent her falling over the embankment. (continued on next post) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ gabbyfan4ever - 05:08pm Apr 28, 2002 ET (#19 of 233)
Cont.
Gabbyfan carefully peered over the embankment to see the condition of the warrior. She gasped as she saw the group of bandits that had destroyed her village, surround the fallen Amazon. Looking farther she could see a plain where a whole group of Amazons were gathered.
Gabbyfan knew she would have to go tell them the fate of their fallen comrade, and about the mysterious noise that had caused the "accident". But would they accept her, knowing she wasnt' an Amazon? As she neared the group of warriors, a million thoughts ran through young Gabbyfan's mind. If these women accepted her, they were the only family she had now. Upon entering the gathering of Amazons, she looked up to see the face of her friends from the tavern. After telling her tale, and the tale of their fellow Amazon, she waited for their judgement upon her. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lucystar1 - 06:55pm Apr 28, 2002 ET (#20 of 330)
MORE TROUBLE
As Saxy signals them all to stop and be quiet, Lucystar begins scanning the area for Zena. Under her breath she mutters "OK, Ergo's here, now where is that crazy Amazon. She can get into more throuble than Gabrielle and we know how trouble finds her." Saxy is also searching for signs of Zena and almost on cue, both she and Lucystar look up and see Zena spin around and, arms waving, tumble backwards and is lost from sight. "oh, gods". Lucystar and Saxy turn to each other and at the same time "Trouble has found Zena, AGAIN". Despite the seriousness of it, they both can't help the grins sneaking up. "Let me guess, Zena saw the bandits. Zena saw us. Zena saw something else. Trouble found Zena." Saxy just shakes her head "That about sums it up in a lima bean."
Just then a figure appears running towards us. "Hey, isn't that little Gabbyfan. What's she doing here? When I talked to her at the Inn the other night, she was heading home for a break from the Academy." Saxy's not smiling. "Looks like something is VERY wrong here. C'mon." The warriors dismount and move up to meet little Gabbyfan. She stops, a little apprehensive at first, but squares her shoulders and then blurts out her story. Bandits, village destroyed, family gone, only one left, then deep breath "And I heard a noise and Zena did too and then I saw Zena go over the edge and she's right in the middle of the bandits." breath "THEY GOT HER!"
Little Gabbyfan bursts into tears. Lucystar takes her into her arms. (She maybe a tough warrior on the outside, but a big mushball inside.) As Little Gabbyfan sobs on her shoulder "It's OK, we're here, you're safe now." In between sobs, Lucystar and Saxy hear her wail "My family's gone, I've got nobody now." Lucystar looks up at Saxy, knowing she's really just a mushball too and getting a knowing nod of her head "Little one, you have a family right here. You're part of our family now." Looking up at me she signs "But I'm not an Amazon like you." "Hey, I'm not an Amazon, but Saxy and her clan have accepted me and treat me like a sister Amazon. Because I live at the Inn with Cyrene, I'm not part of the village life, but I'm still feel and act as part of the clan." I look at Saxy with a grateful smile. Then Saxy steps in "Little Gabbyfan, Lucy's right. You don't have to be born an Amazon to BE an Amazon. But I think my sisters will agree with me that you have shown the skills and bravery to be a member of our clan." An idea pops into Lucystar's head. Hoping the Amazon Council and Saxy agree "I'll bet that with Queen Saxy's help, she can get the Council to agree to adopt you. Then you would be a true Amazon." Saxy raises an eyebrow, then with a twinkle in hers eyes and a smile on her face she states "I think I can persuade the Council that a new sister is in order." Little Gabbyfan, who apparently had been holding her breath through this last exchange suddenly grabs Lucystar in a bear hug and then turns and grabs Saxy in a similiar one. Of course, Saxy trying to uphold her tough image sternly says "Of course, Little Gabbyfan, you'll have to learn the appropriate way to address your Queen." Little Gabbyfan steps back and gasps, then peeks up at Saxy and is met by a brillant smile that spreads from ear to ear.
Now that Little Gabbyfan's situation has been settled, it's time to figure out how to get Zena away from the bandits and put a stop to them at the same time. Without any of us getting killed in the process.

Dirt, Sweat and Tear
Zena lay face down in the middle of the bandit's compound. "Dirt," she thought, "is in my nose and my mouth. It's crunchy in my teeth. I hate dirt! Maybe I'm dead. The Elysian Fields aren't supposed to be dirty, and you don't hurt there. What if I'm in Taurtarus??" A large boot gave Zena a kick in the side. "Nope", she thought, "I'm not dead!" She looked up quickly and grabbed the boot yanking her opponant off his feet while reaching back to an empty scabbard. Taking the opportunity, 5 of the bandits moved in to attack her and in the battle that followed at least 2 of them sustained severe injuries from well placed kicks. Finally outnumbered Zena was tied and shoved into a cage made of logs and rope. "Sit there Amazon, until we decide what you are worth to us", the one who seemed to be leader said as he peered in at her. Zena remained silent and so he wandered away finally to one of the cooking fires. "At least", she thought, "I can get a good look at their numbers from here." As she took note of everything around her, her thoughts returned again and again to Evergreen. Something had to be wrong with her friend. Night closed in and the full moon rose over the wall. As she dozed she dreamed that she saw a beach: Evergreen and two familiar figures were there, but who was that third shadowy person? Zena jerked awake before she had the answer but her eyes focused on something reflecting the firelight. A standard with the letters "S P Q R" ...ROMANS....disguised as bandits!!! Why? How could she get a message to her sisters in the valley below? Had they seen her take the tumble? And what of the village just up the road where Little Gabbyfan was headed on her way back from the Academy? "This is beginning to be serious", she mused and sniffed back one tear.

Who was that on the cliffside?
Someone sat behind a boulder along the steep side of the cliff, girlpower watched as a lone Amazon appeared. I thought, this is my chance to prove myself to Rome. The captain will know now that I am more then a mere slave. I can be useful. If I can only find a way to capture this Amazon. Just then I lost my footing, ever so slightly, but it was enough to make a noise. I'm doomed, there is no way an Amazon wouldn't have heard my misstep. Just then I noticed a figure in the woods. Maybe I am in luck, after all if I noticed, then the Amazon certainly will. As if I planned it, the Amazon turned to see what moved in the distance. Just the distraction I need. Girlpower threw a stone under the foot of the Amazon causing her to fall down the cliff. Now all I have to do is get to her before the idiot soldiers do. Before I could move, a young lass appeared out of the woods. Sitting still, I watched as she grew upset then ran away from the cliffside. Meanwhile, those ignorant soldiers down below have stolen my prize. We will see about that. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ EvergreenLM - 10:19pm Apr 28, 2002 ET (#23 of 330) "To Conquer Others is to Know Power...to Conquer Yourself is to Know the Way"
Back At The Ranch
{Morning light is streaming through an open window. Curtains are gently blowing. Evergreen lies on a duck down mattress atop a large bed made of rough hewn timbers. She is covered with a brightly colored blanket. A soft tapping on the door} "Are you awake dear?". Evergreen struggles to focus. Cyrene stands by the bed. Evergreen attempts to stretch, but is stopped short by a jabbing pain in her right shoulder. The haze finally is gone and Evergreen becomes sharply aware that she is not only missing her clothes, but the ride into the valley with the others. "Cyrene, who brought me here? More importantly, WHO took off my clothes and where are they now? If it was Saxy's bar maid, why I yay, otta.." Cyrene stepped aside saying it was she who helped EG into the long white gown and put the soothing polstice on the wound.
EG now fully remembered the events that lead to the arrow colliding with her shoulder. "Is Sue alright, did she get away?" Cyrene tells EG that the others had her brought back to the tavern knowing she would be well cared for, "After all I AM Xena's mother".
Evergreen searched the room for her clothes. {Inaudible muttering} "I have got to get out of here.
Evergreen, in deep thought, turns to the gentle woman by the bed. "Cyrene, do you believe that others can come to you as you begin to pass to the other side? Can others you love send you back? I thought I saw...never mind." Evergreen reflects in silence on the loving touch to the shoulder, the deep whisper to listen, "And, Zena! Something has happened to Zena". Evergreen bolts upright ripping off the gown. Cyrene protest. "No, you can't...", but Evergreen is already pulling on the doe skin pants and fringed jacket. "Please Cyrene, where are my boots?" Cyrene reluctantly hands EG the boots. As EG pulls them on she sees blood on the silver conchos and remembers all too well that the Fates almost called her name. "Cyrene, where did they go? Tell me, which direction?" Cyrene points to the north. She embraces EG saying, " I have heard from some visitors downstairs that there are Romans marching towards the cliffs. I think that is where the others have gone". EG looks fondly at Cyrene and is grateful to have her as a good friend. As Evergreen bounds down the stairs, Cyrene calls out," I knew you would go. I had Casilus saddle Whisperer for you. May the gods protect you!" Evergreen whistles and Whisperer's ears perk to the sound. With a gentle stroke to her ever faithful companion, Evergreen steps to the saddle. "Let's go, boy- YAH!, YAH!" And Evergreen gallops to the north.

------------------------------------------------------------------------ xwpfan - 01:18am Apr 29, 2002 ET (#24 of 330)
The ride back to Cyrene's had been uneventful and for that I was grateful. So much had happened in such a short time.
We gingerly dragged Evergreen on the liter behind us..it seemed like it tokk an eternity to get to Cyrene's Inn.
My heart skipped a beat as I saw the outline of the inn in the horizon..I knew if we could get Evergreen to Cyrene while she was still alive ...she would be ok.
Cyrene came rushing out to greet us. Her joy was short lived as she caught sight of Evergreen lying on the liter-somewhere between life and death. Cyrene yelled "Bring her inside Quickly and Be Careful"!!Get me some Blankets and hot water!!
As we carried Evergreen's body over the threshold she softly began to moan..at first it was almost inaudible..but as we laid her in the duck down mattress it sounded as if she was speaking to the Warrior Princess. Cryene's eyes filled with tears as she heard Evergreen cry out to Xena.
As Cyrene regained her composure she ushered Sue and I out of the room saying that she would take care of her that she had to clean the wounds and bandage them..she then ordered Sue and I to eat and to get some rest. Begrudgingly, we left Evergreen and went to get a bite to eat. As I plooped into the chair, after ordering my cider I realized for the first time how hungry, thirsty and tired I really was.I felt I had aged 10 years in a day.
I looked at Sue and not having the energy to question her in any way I said I wish there was more that we could do for her, butI guess Evergreen is now in the hands of the Fates. Sue nodded and said"just like I was today, I don't know why you took my word but thank you for believing me.
I was about to say you're welcome or something as equally profound when a young boy no older than 6 came running into the in claiming that he and his friends saw Romans. How could this be we had had no word of Roman activity..just bandits and thieves.I grabbed the young boy by the shoulder and spun him towards me as I bombarded him with questions: How many are there? Which way are they headed? What is their uniform??
The Young boy struggled to answer as he was gasping after every other word...I ..don't ..know..how..many...they're..but ..I do know..what direction they're heading .. towards.. their ..heading..towards ..your friends..some..don't have uniforms ..they look like.. poor people.
Simultaneously, Sue and I reached for our swords..we knew we had to warn they others..I told Lurker Sue to get the horses and that I would tell Cyrene.
Cyrene knew something wrong when she saw me in the doorway of Evergreen's room, she said Whatever it is Go! I'll take Care of Evergreen- you go help protect your friends.
Despite the mounting urgency I took a moment and knelt beside Evergreen's bed and I whispred in her ear By the god's we will get whoever did this to you!!
As we mounted our horses Cyrene called out " my daughter Xena would be so proud of all of you!!" Please Be Careful!
Cyrene's words just made us want to ride all the harder..we raced through the darkness in hopes that we we would get there in time to warn the others..we just had to get there in time...

There wasn't time to dally. Saxy ordered the amazons to spread out and set up a defensive position. Sharing a look with Lucystar that met total agreement the two set off toward the wall, picking their way carefully among the rocks. Saxy opted to keep her sword sheathed but felt naked without a weapon in hand. She drew one of the knives that she kept secreted around her person and flipped it from hand to hand.
She scanned the area continually, listening for the strange sound that had startled Zena enough to make her forget all of her training. With Lucystar to guard her back and with the amazons below, she didn't worry about dangers coming from behind. As they neared the summit they dropped to a crouch, moving forward cautiously. Peering over the edge of the wall, they saw the bandits encamped below.
25 campfires, and how many men at each one? Four? Or is it five? I think it's four. Gods I wish I could see from here. At the least that was one hundred men. How was her small band of Amazons going to take 100 men? Off to one side, Saxy's eye caught something strange. It was Zena, trapped in a crude cage of poles and hemp. She leaned closer to Lucystar and whispered in her ear, "We have to get her out of there."
Lucystar nodded. Saxy thought she had a plan. It had been done before, but it had worked time and again. If the sentries could be overcome, a lone warrior could sneak into the camp and free their captive comrade. She could over come the guards, of that she was certain, but with her long limbs and build, stealth was the concern. There are times when a smaller stature is a distinct bonus, and I know someone who would be perfect for this job.
With a signal to her companion to come along, Saxy slipped back down the embankment to join the waiting band.

Lethal Weapon I
Zena slid down the wall of the cage until she could reach her boot. She always kept a small dagger there just for times like this. A soldier passed by and she pretended to be asleep, freezing in position until he moved away. Slowly she inched the blade into a cutting position and began to work at the ropes that held her wrists. "By Ares, I'm going to carry a bigger dagger even if I have to wear taller boots", she muttered to herself. She was almost free when in the moonlight she thought she saw two heads peeking over the high wall around the encampment. "Well, it's about time!", she breathed. "If they can see the legion down here they know they have to have a good battle plan."
------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lucystar1 - 11:31pm Apr 29, 2002 ET (#27 of 330)
NEW PLAN NEEDED
As Saxy and Lucystar silently head back down the embankment to rejoin the other warriors, they both are running possible rescue plans through their minds. When they reach the bottom Lucy turns to Saxy and stops her. "We sure got our hands full this time. I'm figuring about 100 roman soldiers. I thought I saw Zena moving around in that cage, so I'm guessing she's not hurt too bad." Mostly her pride for getting herself in trouble, again. Saxy voices my thought "No, just her pride, I bet." "Saxy, don't you think we should get a plan mapped out before we join the others? When we tell them what we've seen, I don't want them to get spooked." "As a matter of fact, a plan has come to mind." Saxy says knowingly. "We've used it before and it's always worked. But it's going to involve more than just you and me, and the timing has to be perfect." Lucystar looks at her friend then nodding "I think I know which 'plan' you're talking about. Knocking a few roman guards' heads together and a little, little being the operative word here, little Amazon speed and finesse." Saxy smiles at Lucystar, glad she caught on so fast. "That's the plan. Now, let's go fill the others in and pick our third cohort for this mission."
They resume their trek back to the others to let them know the situation they face with the romans and the plan to rescue Zena.

------------------------------------------------------------------------ Joxcenia - 11:34pm Apr 29, 2002 ET (#28 of 330) I Came... I Saw... I Went Home! lol
They say that the night has a thousand eyes, and apparently the woods contains many a hidden soul, because no sooner had Saxy thought of the perfect mini-Amazon to sneak into the enemy camp to uncage the captured Zena, than Joxcenia came galloping out of the forest, heading straight for the small -but furious- group. Just a split second behind Joxcenia were xwpfan & Lurker Sue. Joxcenia had seen them race out of town and had caught up to them to see what had them so up in arms. "Romans!" Joxcenia had growled. "By the gods, you'd think they'd be tired of being sent home with their tails between their legs!" As the three women warriors joined the group, Saxy pulled Joxcenia aside and filled her in on the plan. "Wait for my signal," Saxy called after Joxcenia as she rushed off to get into position. Joxcenia worked her way over to the bushes at the dark end of the encampment, hoping that the mud covering her face & body would keep the flickering fireside shadows from exposing her presence. She watched the sentries, waiting for the others to pick them off one by one and set themselves in their places. When this was completed Saxy would give out an Amazon call: Get in, release Zena, and get out without getting caught! Joxcenia struck a relaxing yoga pose and breathed slowly and softly in... and then slowly and softly out... She focused on the sentries, and then on the cage that held Zena. Back and forth... back and forth... memorizing the route that Saxy had mapped out... Playing it over and over as she listened for the call

Girlpower sat tucked under the flap of a nearby tent, as she watched the Amazons forge a plan. She knew that if she was to get the captive out of the cage, and convince the Amazons she was not the enemy, she had the chance to capture the entire tribe. What glory that would bring. I must act this out just so, or I would never be trusted enough to even get close to the tribe, let alone set up a trap. Quietly I make my way to a campfire with a plate of food. I chose a younger soldier to approach and got his attention. "Pardon me sir, am I permitted to feed the prisoner?" Not wanting to show his inexperience in tactics dealing with prisoners and seeing no threat in me, he allowed me near the cage. I knelt down towards the still bound Amazon offering a plate of food. She grunted at me in disgust. I paid no attention and whispered, "there is a rescue party on it's way. If I help you escape will you promise to take me with you? I can't live like this much longer!"

Saxy and Lucystar made quick work of the sentries and took their places, slipping on the mens' tunics and helmets. Gods these things stink. The things I have to do for my sisters. The disguise would fool the other soldiers as long as nobody got too close. She prayed that they'd be out of there before anyone decided to check up on the guards.
She was about ready to give the signal to Joxcenia when she spotted a woman moving away from one of the fires and toward Zena's cage. "Oh Hades, what now?" she whispered to Lucystar.
"I don't know but time's wasting here."
Saxy rolled her eyes. "Tell me about it. Why do the fates always throw the unexpected at me?" Sitting back on her heels she peered into the gloom. She looked over to where Joxcenia was hiding, aware of the other woman's gaze, even if she couldn't see her. Giving a shrug, Saxy settled back to wait and prayed that Artemis was with them.

Girlpower waited for the Amazon prisoner's answer. She nodded her head just so, and GP took out a dagger from under her skirt and began to pick the lock of the cage. The Amazon then continued to free herself from her binds within. They watched the soldiers at the nearest campfire, making sure that they were completely under the firelight's spell. GP swung open the door ever so quiet, the two crept out of the camp. Once out of earshot the Amazon spoke,"I must get to my tribe, I saw two of them near the sentry, no doubt to rescue me." I whispered, "if they are true Amazon warriors, they will have seen your escape and adapted." With that the two made their way towards the cliff.

When Fates Collide
Zena had just broken through the ropes at her wrist when she saw a figure moving toward her in the shadowy circle beyond the campfire. The girl offered a plate of food through the bars but Zena grunted in disgust at her and turned away. "Why isn't anything ever simple, I'm nearly out and this Roman slave comes to slow down my escape."
The ragged figure leaned closer and spoke, "There is a rescue party on it's way. If I help you escape will you promise to take me with you? I can't live like this much longer!" Zena's heart softened a bit when the young woman spoke. She herself had spent some time in slavery until her sisters had won her back. But slaves are loyal while in captivity for fear of the beatings and punishments masters could offer. "Well", she thought, " I know I have many skills and I'm more than a match for this Girl if she tries to betray me. I may save the tribe some time and a few lives if if I go now before they come for me." Zena had no idea that the other Amazons were only a heartbeat away. She nodded her agreement to the slave and quickly slit the ropes at her ankles. The Girl opened the cage and they slipped into the shadows at the rim of the tent area. As they ran for the cliffs Zena asked the slave what she was called. "Puella Virium", she answered. "It translates into your tongue as Girl of strength or Girlpower." Zena's eyes narrowed. "So you are Roman?" "No, no! I am from Gaul, I was renamed by my masters." Without realizing it, Zena had trapped Girlpower in the first of many lies to follow.
Zena kept the information in the back of her mind. Although she was known for rushing into difficult situations, and sometimes having to pay the price for it, she knew her fellow Amazons respected her for loyalty, skill in battle and ability to gather information. She prided herself that not one sister had ever been lost through her propensity to attract trouble.
And so together, Zena and the slave began to climb the wall unaware that below a new plan was taking shape.

------------------------------------------------------------------------ EvergreenLM - 08:20pm Apr 30, 2002 ET (#33 of 330) Traveling
Evergreen continued to push north. The morning had been uneventful and Evergreen was allowed the pleasure of seeing the land in which she rode. As she and Whisperer left the forest they began their ascent to the top of a rocky gorge. The gorge was pocked with tree with large trunks and bushy tops interspersed with tall, straight, burnt trunks that gave credence to the stories she had heard as a child of the land once being covered with a canopy of green. The elder, Matukituki, in the Wonki tribe that raised Evergreen, spoke of the land as the "a long white cloud". Matu spoke of the earth being pushed up by the gods giving rise to the great mountains and raining cobble stones on the valley below. To the southwest great mountains of sand rose and lead down to the sea. White flowers dotted the valley and the Tui bird nested in the grass.
Evening was nearing and the great orange light was descending in the west. Evergreen knew that Whisperer had a champion's heart and would carry his human until he dropped. Although she longed to find the others, she knew she must stop and give her friend rest. "Okay, boy",patting Whisperer, Evergreen steps down and takes her sleeping roll from the back of the saddle. Cyrene had thoughtfully place a sack of dried fruits for a sparse meal that it would be. Evergreen pulled off Whisperer's saddle and blanket, rubbed him with a course cloth, and set him free to graze on the sparse vegetation. Evergreen knelt by the stream with water the color of the blue in an old friend's eyes. She drank the cool water. Her shoulder ached and the rest of her body was ready for sleep. Night had almost fallen.
As she laid down on the cool grass to look up at the evening star, Evergreen hears a whimper. She turns and sees a small dog crawling towards her with ears back in submission. The creature looked starved. Evergreen remembers the jerky Cyrene gave her begging her to eat it to restore her strength. Evergreen goes to her leather pouch, takes out what little there was saying, "Come here, I won't hurt you". The little dog was quite comical with tall pointed ears, a long body with just a stub where there should have been a tail. The dog's legs were so close to the ground they looked mismatched to the rest of the body. It's color was reddish blonde and its head bore a stripe of white like the winter snow as was its chest. It's eyes were sharp and knowing. It continued its cautious crawl until it snatched the meat and ran to the shelter of a rocky overhang. Evergreen wished that it would stay, but knew of such hurts that made trust so hard to share even small things.
Evergreen stretched out and gazed at the night sky now filled with stars, or maybe they were the lights of souls of all those that were loved by others and now gone.
As Evergreen drifted off into sleep, the sky became filled with lights of glorious colors. Colors she had seen in the sky following a great storm. The sounds of the night sang a lullaby. From out of sight, the small dog crept to Evergreen's side, laid its fox like head on her wounded shoulder, and as Evergreen prayed for her friends, the two slept.

meanwhile back at the cliffs
Girlpower thought to herself as she followed the Amazon, she helped free, up the cliffside. This lass is smart, I must be more careful what I say from now on. Though it is true that she was named by her Roman master, it seemed to spark an interest in the Amazon. I don't need any suspicion cast upon me. It will be a difficult enough task, just getting close enough to the tribe, to discover their weakness. All I can think about is bringing the glory back to my Roman family's name. After all, they are the only family I can remember.

The Unknown Rescuer
Lucystar and Saxy watch as Zena and her unknown rescuer sneak out of the camp and start scaling up the embankment. After being sure they are safely on theor way Saxy gives the retreat call to Joxcenia. "OK, Saxy, now what?" Lucy whispers. "First, let's drag these guards back out of sight and tie and gag them. I don't want them coming to and alerting the others." "Yeah, at least on one will stumble over them in the dark" Lucystar chuckles to herself.
Having completed their task, they turn and head back toward their camp. Quietly to Saxy, "Was it just me or didn't Zena's rescuer look like a Roman slave." Saxy, agreeing "That's what I thought, but is this a slave we can trust? Something just doesn't feel right." Shaking her head, Lucy concurs "That's my feelings exactly. Why would a slave, and a Roman slave, want to risk their life trying to save an Amazon captive."
Lucystar and Saxy head back to camp with more questions that need to be answered and a new plan to make.
------------------------------------------------------------------------ saxgoddess25 - 09:37pm May 1, 2002 ET (#36 of 330) I have the soul of a bard and the heart of a warrior. My vengeance is swift and complete.
By the time Saxy and Lucystar made it back to the amazon camp, Zena and the Roman slave were standing in the midst of the group of women, telling their story.
Saxy walked up to Zena and gripped her forearm in a warrior's greeting. "It's good to have you back Zena," Saxy said lightly so that her following words would not sting, "next time try not to take on a century of Romans by yourself eh? There are plenty to go around."
Zena looked slightly embarassed and Saxy offered her a quirky grin. Schooling her features back to a distant wariness the Queen turned to the slave. "I thank you for assisting my sister in her escape. I am Saxgoddess."
"Puella Virium," was the reply.
"Puella Virium," Saxy repeated. "Perhaps you can tell us a little more about those Romans below. But first I need to discuss something with Lucystar."
Saxy drug Lucystar off a little way from the rest of the group, aware the whole time of the slave's eyes on her back. "That woman gives me the creeps."
"I know," Lucystar replied. "There's something very wrong here."
Saxy inclined her head in agreement. "Exactly. I want you and Joxcenia to keep a very close eye on her. If she so much as looks at anyone the wrong way, kill her. Now, here is what I have planned. Discuss this with noone unless I give you leave to do so."
A cool breeze was blowing as they made their way back to the group. Saxy looked into the face of each warrior in turn. She saw mixed emotions there from fear to barely contained excitement. Drawing a breath of the cool night air she allowed herself a slight smile. Inwardly she laughed.
"Since we're all here now, it's time to make sure the Romans have a very unsound sleep."

Moving On
Evergreen woke with the sunrise. The little dog was sitting quite so still, but as she began to focus,it pounced upon her face. For a moment she thought the dog had just been a dream, but there he was. Evergreen stood and worked the kinks out of her back. There would be no breakfast for her,but a few strips of dried beef remained at the bottom of her leather pouch. " Nope, not THAT hungry. Here you go dog, its all yours".
With the bedroll tied securely up, and after attending to nature's call, Evergreen whistles for Whisperer. He is quick to respond and eager to move on. Evergreen saddles him, steps up, and with a kick, begins the rest of the journey to find her friends. But only a few feet from the encampment, Whisperer stops. EG kicks, but he will not move. He turns his head to look backwards. EG shifts her weight in the saddle to see what is so important. There, patiently sitting beside the stream, is the little dog.
"So THAT'S the way it is. I take him or you don't take me. Fine, just fine. Come here dog. With those short legs of yours I will never catch up with the others." EG leans far down from the saddle and scoops up their new traveling companion. "What next, lovesick barmaids? By the gods I wish our Queen would find a new diversion".
Leaning back in the saddle, holding tight to the little dog, EG relies on Whisperer's sure footing to get them back down to the other side of the valley. She contemplated riding the backbone of the mountain, but she could easily be spotted. EG decided to follow the valley river to the cliffs. Hopefully, she will find the others or at least a scout.
As she enters a gulley, a flash is seen from the same ridge that she left only moments ago. Evergreen clears the opposite bank and hides in the shelter of nearby trees. The dog's ears become alert,Whisperer pounds the ground. Evergreen soon sees what they already know. "Romans!,Legions of Romans!" There is no mistaking the silver shields flashing in the morning sun. "It will be a slaughter if they get to the others before I can warn them. But how will I ever know where they are?"

------------------------------------------------------------------------ Joxcenia - 10:21pm May 1, 2002 ET (#38 of 330) I Came... I Saw... I Went Home! lol
All Dressed Up And Nowhere To Go.... Grrrrrrr.....
Joxcenia watched as Saxy and Lucystar took out the sentries and quickly replaced them. Lucystar appeared to be holding her breath from time to time. She must be doing Yoga breathing as well, Joxcenia thought to herself just as a female slave walked up to a young soldier with a plate of food. The slavegirl motioned toward the cage where Zena was being kept.
Oh No! Joxcenia groaned slowly. If the slavegirl went over to the cage now, she'd be sure to see that Zena had her wrists already half unbound and notify the soldiers. She looked to Saxy and Lucystar to see their reaction to this, and almost snickered despite herself, for Joxcenia was sure she could see smoke coming from their ears.
There was nothing to do but wait... wait and hope that Zena saw her coming and kept her wrists hidden... wait as the moisture slowly evaporated from the mud... wait as with each ticking second tingles and twitches raced across her ever tightening skin...
After what seemed like an eternity, Joxcenia saw the slavegirl pick the lock and release Zena from her cage. She shot Saxy and Lucystar another look, wondering if the hairs on the nape of their necks were bristling as well. Just as the two women disappeared into the darkness a short distance from Joxcenia, she heard Saxy's retreat call.
Joxcenia slowly worked her way to a creek about a half mile from where the Amazons were gathered. No way was she going to let this mud dry on her skin until she became a semi-giant, cracked, gingerbread-like, mini-Amazon. And in no way was she going to accept this new slave into the fold... if for nothing else other than the fact that she had gotten all muddied over for no good reason!
"Oh! ^*(#)&^$#$!" Joxcenia mumbled under her breath as she waded into the ice-cold water of the tranquil creek.

Out and About
With each step of the climb up the wall, Zena was painfully aware that the scabbard slapping against her back was empty. When she had tumbled over the wall, her sword had come out and fallen out of her reach. A weapon is a personal object to it's owner, especially one trained by Xena and Gabrielle; and this weapon had been a gift as well. The sword had been a solstice present from Evergreen the year that Zena had given her the leather coat (like Gabrielle's) she had wanted so much. Evergreen had taken one of her own lima bean shaped emeralds from her sword and had it embedded in the pommel as a token of friendship. Zena had loved it from the first moment she swung it through the air, and now it was gone. Gone like the one she had owned before it. "By the entire Pantheon I will have it back if I have to fight every Roman in all the territories", she hissed under her breath. Puella Virium climbing beside her glanced at her and then quickly averted her eyes.
As they vaulted over the top and half slid down the other side, Zena grabbed Puella Virium by the arm. "This is where we part. I owe you a blood debt for saving me but I cannot take you into our camp. My Queen will have scouts posted and they will not let you pass if you follow me. Take the road going south, to Amphipolis. There is a kind woman there who owns a tavern and she will help you." Before the woman could protest Zena was on a run to where she had left Ergo.
But the slave was determined not to be left behind and by the time Zena was facing Queen Saxy, the sentries had brought in Puella Virium. The Queen made her plan with Lucystar and returned to the group. "Here me Oh Queen", Zena's voice was firm, "send me in first to deal with the Roman dogs. They have one of my possesions and I must have it before they can harm it or defile it by using it."
Beside her the slave had assumed a posture of supplication, touching her head to the ground. "This woman is really getting underfoot", Zena thought as she looked up to see a strange expression on the faces of Saxy, Lucystar and Joxcenia. ------------- girlpower - 03:55am May 2, 2002 ET (#40 of 330) Courage is not the absence of fear..but the strength to conquer it.
You can't send me away!
Puella Virium or Girlpower stared at the Amazon as she took off towards her horse. This is not exceptable, I have to get inside or the escape will have been in vain. I'll just have to follow her. I know I will be caught by the scouts, but i can use that to my advantage, if they don't kill me. when they see me become completely submissive to their fellow Amazon, my life may be spared. I didn't get very far when I was captured. Thank the gods they didn't kill me on sight. Now I have a chance. As three warriors watched I bowed to the Amazon's feet. She became embarrassed for me and spoke. "Get up, no woman should grovel", as she pulled me to my feet. I kept my eyes lowered as she continued to speak, "Why did you follow, I told you to go south." Girlpower looked up, head still bowed and spoke in a whisper, " I can't take the chance that Romans will find me. Do you know what they do to escapees? If you kill me at least I wouldn't suffer. Besides, I may be of some use to you. I know the soldier's camp inside and out, plus I can hunt, cook, ride and heal. Please don't send me away again!" With that said I glanced at the three warriors nearby. One seemed to be regal, she must be the queen. One didn't wear the banner of the Amazon, but was powerful in her own right. The third was almost childlike in stature, and the attitude that showed on her face. Always has something to prove. She will be hard to get to know, but I have a talent for reading people and using their weakness to my advantage. Her's was clearly pride. As I continued my thoughts the Amazon touched my arm, as I looked up towards her I could see the look of aggrivation and pity in her eyes. "I am Zena. This is our Queen Saxgoddess." I immediately bowed back to the ground, without lifting my head, I said " My fate is in your hands."
------------------------------------------------------------------------ saxgoddess25 - 05:37am May 2, 2002 ET (#41 of 330) I have the soul of a bard and the heart of a warrior. My vengeance is swift and complete.
Saxy has a plan...
Saxy stared coolly down at the woman groveling in the dirt. Exchanging a sidelong glance with her second she cleared her throat, "Stand up woman. There are no slaves among the Amazons and you may be useful to us. Joxcenia!"
The smaller Amazon bowed before Saxy. "My Queen?"
"I give this woman into your care. I think you know what that means. Any questions?"
"None, my Queen." Saxy saw the look that flashed through Joxcenia's eyes. Heh, I almost pity that slave girl, the queen said to herself. That was a prime example of cruel and unusual punishment.
"Now, we are going to make the rest of the night very unpleasant for those soldiers." Saxy remembered Zena's plea for a chance to get her sword back. By the Gods, she knew about losing weapons that were treasured gifts. Unconsciously, her hand tracked to the hilt of her breast dagger as she spoke again. "Zena, I give you my leave to retrieve your sword if you can while your sisters create a diversion. As for the rest...I've got jobs for each of you so listen up."

Counting Heads
Zena received the Queen's permission with gratitude. She would have her sword back in her hand before Evergreen could see that she had lost the precious gift. Evergreen! She was still not with the group! Dawn was breaking and nearly a full day had passed since they had ridden out from Cyrene's. Perhaps Lurker Sue had not been trustworthy and had attacked Evergreen. When their orders were given, Zena would ask for news of her friend. As she looked over the band, there were several more not present. She anxiously hoped that they would soon ride in or report from their posts.
Zena stole a side glance at Joxcenia who was now sharing the same breathing space with Girlpower. "I won't worry about what you might be up to while we are in the Roman camp," she thought. "You can't so much as twitch an eyebrow without Joxcenia knowing. Not to mention the fact that she is in touch with the spirit world as much as she is in touch with us. Perhaps her vigilance will comfort my fears that this slave is trouble. And why does trouble always follow me?"

A NIGHT OF DISTRACTIONS
Lucystar had stepped back and to the side of Queen Saxy, when the Roman slave fell at her feet. Thinking "Oh, that's going to go over big. Saxy hates grovelers, especially women grovelers." Lucystar grins slightly "Told ya so." Then she smirks "Oh boy, slave, are you in for it with Joxcenia as your "caretaker". That is one pissed off Amazon. Not only is she not get to do the rescue, but she had to wash off that mud in a cold stream." Lucystar is very glad SHE'S not that slave right now.
Looking over at Zena, Lucy feels a little tug on her heart. She knows how important that sword is to her. Zena may not have noticed Saxy's slight movement to where her breast dagger rests, but Lucystar caught it and smiled knowingly. Yes, a warrior and her weapons have a special bond.
As the others move off, Lucy catches Saxy's arm, "I'm glad you gave Zena permission to go in after her sword. Of course, you know she would have gone back anyway." Chuckling "At least this way her sisters can help with the diversion and maybe, just maybe, Zena will be successfull without getting into more trouble." Looking Saxy in the eyes "And don't think I didn't catch that touch on the hilt of your breast dagger." Winking "Mushball.
Lucystar turns away to go plan her own diversion, leaving Saxy with a cocked eyebrow "Mushball?" Lucy could hear her mutter "I'll get you for that one."

Watching over my sisters
Lurker Sue and I had gotten into camp just after Joxcenia. The rest of the group was already entering the Roman camp- I knew trying to join them would only put my sisters at risk. I looked around the encampment -even the dumbest Roman could find this camp I thought to myself. Lurker Sue and I quickly gathered some tree branches and swept over the many hoof and foot prints that lead in and out of the camp. Feeling better that we might not be able to be tracked to camp. I decided to have Lurker Sue guard the West end of camp- I figured any real trouble would come from the East or directly at us, so posting her in the West would be safe for everyone involved. I had her cover herself in mud and then cover herself in the loose foliage I had gathered. Once covered she took her post amongst the trees and bushes. Sue blended in beautifully. It was hard to believe she was not an Amazon. After making sure she was secure in her guard post I walked the length of the camp looking for a good sentry post. I spotted a tall tree with thick vines and foliage. Perfect. I broke off one of the vines, tossed one end up into the air wrapping it around a sturdy limb and hoisted myself up into the arms of the tree. I had the perfect vantage point. From my little perch I watched in pride as Queen Saxy and Lucystar took out the Roman Sentries. Pride quickly turned to deep concern and irritation as I watched a Roman slave girl help Zena out of her cage. Something didn't quite add up there. My irritation lessened as I saw Joxencia having to bathe in the cold creek ; for she had covered herself from head to toe in mud, as camouflage.I thought with much amusement as to what joxencia would like to do to the slave girl for ruining her plan!! My amusement was short lived for as I crept further on to the limb of the tree. I saw everyone returning to camp. I was able to see the slave girl briefly turn towards the South but then turn and begin to follow... it was now up to us to protect my sisters. I lept to my feet and gave the quietest but shrillest whistle I could muster. It was enough, it had alerted Sue. I saw Sue arise from her post and head towards me. As she ran towards me, I jumped to the ground and yelled "Come on we've got to catch that slave girl!" We ran through the forest, there would be no time for tatics or planning this time. Just pure strength and instinct. As we caught up to her Sue and I stopped for a brief moment, souting for any other romans or any other signs of trouble, then with a nod and a glance to one another we sprang into action. The fighting was not nearly as fierce as we anticipated. the Roman never made any any real effort to resist- we had her in our grasp within seconds. It didn't make sense Romans always gave such great fight but this one seemed like she wanted to be caught... Shaking my head I dismissed my thoughts ,I had a prisoner to deal with...I held my dagger to her throat and said "Give me one reason I shouldn't kill you right now?" "I can help you." she said. I was about to say "We don't need your help,we're Amazons, we get rid of Roman dogs like you! In my book the only good Roman is a dead Roman!" Lurker Sue cut me off and said,"Your Queen may want to speak with her". As she said those words the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. I wondered was she trying to protect the prisoner? Or was she trying to protect me from not following Amazon protocol yet again.. for the first time I had a fleeting doubts as to her loyalty and it disturbed me greatly. After a few moments of thought, I decided she was correct, Queen Saxy would certainly want to interrogate this Roman scum. As we approached the camp we handed the Roman slave over to two other Amazons, who took her straight to Queen Saxy. I wanted to sort out my thoughts and to check on my horse. Sue and parted ways, Sue wanted to clean off all her mud and foliage before being seen by Queen Saxy again. With everything that was going on no one had noticed us coming into camp. As I gently brushed my horse I watched as the Roman Slave girl was brought before Queen Saxy. When she bowed in supplication I knew she was not what she presented herself to be... but the real question was what was she up to? Only time and observation could tell that tale. Queen Saxy listened intently to the slaves tale and smirked a bit when she described her capture. I waited with great anticaption as to what she might do to this strange. A smile came to my lips as Queen Saxy assigned the Roman slave to Joxencia..I thought "what pure genius !!Death would be a much less cruel punishment then what Joxencia will dole out" As they left the camp to retrieve Zena's sword, I couldn't help but think "this can only lead to trouble ..."

The Path Taken
Ergo whinnied softly as Zena brushed her down. "Shh. I'm sorry you were left behind. We must advance on foot but I promise you many battles." The chakram still hung from her saddle and Zena put it back on her belt. She had some idea of where the precious sword might be kept. She had seen an armory in the camp and knew well the Roman practice of gathering spoils of war into one place for later distribution. The armory tent was only a few paces from the cage and there was ample shadow if they waited until sunset and went in before the moon rose.
The typical Roman encampment had four gates with the general's tent, or praetorium, in the center and flanked by the tents of the officers. A quick strike there could detach the army from it's "brain". It was not an easy strike however, for grouped around the officer's tents were the regular foot soldiers.
Zena presented herself for her orders from her Queen and for some indication of what the diversion would be. Remembering that she still had not had word of Evergreen she approached Saxy. "My Queen. I am ready. But before I go is there news from Evergreen?

Phalon burst through the door of Cyrene's Tavern winded from the long ride. "Cyrene! I need some help here." She is half carrying, half dragging a semi-conscience man. "I didn't know where else to bring him, but here."
Phalon has passed through these parts before, and always makes it a point to stop at Cyrene's whenever her travels take her near the tavern. Although she rarely takes part in the conversation, she finds the banter pleasant, and sometimes quite boisterous. She feels at home with the women who frequent this establishment and most times is content to just sit back, sip a tankard of meade, eat a plate of root vegetables, (she is especially fond of the roasted parsnips), and listen.
"I found him up the road at a small village", Phalon explained as Cyrene helped her get the man into a bed. "It looked as if a massacre took place. Every last person dead, except for him. He took a nasty blow to the head, which has left him quite foggy, but the rest of his wounds are superficial. He'll be alright after some rest. The blow to his head is probably what saved him. It most likely knocked him out and the thieves mistook him for dead. He keeps muttering something about a girl. I can't make out exactly what he is saying. I suppose we'll have to wait until he is better to find out."
"He can rest here as long as it takes", Cyrene stated. "Those weren't thieves that did this though. It was Romans."
"Romans! Masquerading as thieves?! By the gods, what is going on?"
With the wounded man resting comfortably in bed, and his wounds tended to, Cyrene drew Phalon a pint of mead and sat down with her and began to explain all she knew that had happened.
Phalon wasn't an Amazon or a fighter by nature, but she could be pretty handy with a sword if need be. She had held her own in a few battles before and it sounded as if the women from the tavern could use any extra help that came their way.
Cyrene provided Phalon with some provisions for the road and a fresh horse. Phalon hated to leave her horse behind but he was road weary from the long hard ride and from carrying the extra weight of the wounded man. Wondering and worrying that perhaps she was too late, Phalon headed out in the direction the Amazons had taken just a couple of days prior.

Hiding in Plain Sight
Evergreen looked most intently at the shields glinting in the morning sun. "Legions? Perhaps not". There was something just not right. Evergreen quietly eased Whisperer back up the draugh, his hooves slipped in the cobblestone gravel, but he stayed true to the course. Evergreen rounded an embankment where a better view of the activity could be assessed. She was close enough to hear voices, and near enough to see a most amazing sight!
There were shields alright. Hundreds of them, all lined in a row,but without a doubt no men to match the number. "By the gods, I have heard stories of this! The armory!" Before her was presented hundreds of weapons, some certainly direct from Rome, some taken as the spoils in battle, and others from profiteering warlords.
With a blinding flash of understanding, Evergreen knew, THIS was the Roman encampment at the cliffs Cyrene had spoken of the day she left. As Evergreen reined Whisperer in a plan to circle back to the draugh, little dog leapt from the saddle, and hit the ground running-directly into the camp! "Go on you little meat eater! You'll find yourself on the end of a Roman sword soon enough!" Evergreen softly clicked, pulled the reins right, but Whisperer stood as if frozen by a Titan chant. " Okay, okay, okay! I'll go get him". Evergreen stepped down from the saddle and quietly walked the path that lead to directly into the Roman camp. To her great surprise, all was now quiet, not a soldier was in sight. Little dog ran inside a tent and Evergreen muttering oaths followed behind. "Come here dog! Evergreen entered the tent and gasp at what she saw. A table was before her strewn with battle plans, an Amazon necklace, food, and a sight she never believed possible, Zena's sword! Evergreen knew the jeweled pommel well. Sweet Revenge!
Joxcenia's eyes grew to little slits as a smirk took shape on her lips. So.... the slavegirl was hers to deal with was she... By Hades she'll pay for interfering in matters that didn't concern her. "On Your Knees," Jox barked her orders. "Never... under any circumstances... EVER..... allow yourself to tower over ME!"
Queen Saxy opened her mouth as if to protest, but held her tongue. She didn't like to see ANY woman treated in such a manner, but there was no way she was going to interfere until Jox calmed down. Only then could she be reasoned with. "Xwpfan," said Saxy as she drew her aside. "Make sure Jox doesn't kill our latest find... we may be able to use her to our advantage over the Roman soldiers."
"Yes, My Queen," Xwpfan said with a bow. "I shall do my best... but you know how Jox can get when she's like this."
"Well... do the best you can." With that said, the Queen dismissed her. Xwpfan made sure to remain a short distance behind the slavegirl and Jox so as not to come into Joxcenia's crosshairs.
"Do as you're told," barked Joxcenia even more loudly. Puella Virium did as she was ordered, and continued to act permissive. She must in no way expose her true intentions. Whatever this Amazon twerp dished out, she was going to take... After all.... wasn't SHE the bigger person!?!
Just then Joxcenia sniffed the air and made a face. "What's that smell?" she asks no one in particular. "It smells like ROMANS! Actually it smells like the Roman's filthy dogs... like they've been wallowing in pig droppings!" She sniffed the air several more times, and with each sniff she worked her way closer toward the slavegirl. "YOU! You smell like Roman garbage.... I think you should have a bath before I throw you in your cage!"
"I'll put some water on to boil," volunteered Lurker Sue, wanting to endear herself to the tribe, unaware that she could be signing her death warrant. All grew silent, not even a breeze so much as tossed about any a dancing flame in the campfire.
"You'll do no such thing," Joxcenia said through clenched teeth. She eyed the timid girl up and down. Hummm... another one to keep an eye on. "There's no time... this stench will lead the Romans directly to us. She's going to have to bathe in the creek."
"The one with the leeches?" Lurker Sue queried with a quivering voice.
"Of course not..." Joxcenia said as demurely as possible. "So... why don't you tell me where that is so I can be sure not to go there." She watched as Puella shot pleading looks at Lurker Sue to please lie to her... please! But Lurker Sue was looking at Joxcenia instead and happily supplied the information.
"Don't be gone long," Saxy called out as Joxcenia led Puella out of camp. "I may need your help in carrying out my plan..." ------------- girlpower - 03:39am May 3, 2002 ET (#51 of 330) Courage is not the absence of fear... but the strength to conquer it.
Oh, I hate leeches!
Of all the Amazon’s, I had to be left in the care of Joxcenia. She clearly hates me. Why any woman would have such trouble with a little mud, is beyond me. Maybe she has a fear of dirt. I certainly won’t be able to observe the other tribe members, in this position. The Queen doesn’t trust me in the least, or she never would have placed me with this warrior. As I crawled on my knees, towards the creek for my bath. I was able to gather my thoughts. I’ve learned a few things about the tribe so far. First and foremost, submissive behavior is taboo. Though Joxcenia seems to like her role as dominatrix. I must assert myself to even think about getting near the Queen. I also see that these warriors have many different backgrounds. Some don’t look like they belong, but are fighting for the greater good and for their friends. As I sat in the freezing creek, pulling leeches off every body part imaginable, I was able to observe Joxcenia’s frustration. She knew she would have to stay behind, as the tribe prepares to leave. She’d rather be with her friends, raiding the Roman camp. Her manner says it all. This slave shouldn’t even be here, let alone me have to look after her. “Why didn’t you kill her when you had the chance?” Looking past me, Joxcenia acknowledged xwpfan, as she was hiding in the bushes. “Sue convinced me that the Queen may find her useful,” xwpfan answered. I can’t sit in this water much longer.. Girlpower spoke, “ May I get out Joxcenia? Joxcenia stared the slave girl and growled, “You will do what I say and when I say it, now sit still and scrub. You stink!” Girlpower spoke again a slight shiver in her voice, “There is only one legion of soldiers down that cliff, but within two moons there will be ten more. I hope the tribe can get in and out of there before their arrival.” Joxcenia flashed a look of shock. She took it as a threat and quick as a flash was in the water. She backhanded GP across the face. With that, GP slowly stood up. I was over a head taller then her attacker. Though she was certainly quicker then I, my fists would certainly do more damage. Knowing this GP gained a sense of control. I looked at her, my eyes throwing daggers at the Amazon. “You will not touch me again!” It took every ounce of control to continue on, “I was only giving you the opportunity to plan this out, so the tribe survives. Whether you like it or not, I am here and I want to live. If the tribe is unprepared, we all suffer.” With that said Girlpower sat back down in the freezing water, not taking her eyes off Joxcenia. It was now her move.

The Way
The helmet was a bit too big and the tunic had to be cinched up more than is usual but Zena was ready. There had been no word from Evergreen and the fear and anger that this brought was good fuel for battle.
As she passed little Gabbyfan Zena ruffled her hair. "Don't worry Zena, we'll get your sword back," Gabby was fairly bouncing with anticipation. "Hold it!" Zena grabbed Gabby's arm, "We don't make war for a possession. I foolishly lost my weapon and I alone will retrieve it. The rest of this day is about stopping this vanguard of 120 men from calling in the legions. All of Greece is threatened by their advances, not just this tribe, or the Amazon nation. We live together and fight as one. And now you are one with us." She finished with a smile for her young companion who was looking at the ground. "Fight bravely. I will see you soon my sister."
Zena left quickly and was soon at the western gate of the encampment. She gave the salute, "Ave Caesar" as she moved toward the armory. "By Ares these Romans stink. I'd be glad for a mud bath in Joxcenia's creek about now," she thought. The thought of Joxcenia covered in mud brought a smile to Zena's face.
At the armory tent Zena heard sounds within and so she pulled the Roman short sword from it's sheath. Then the tent flap opened and there was EVERGREEN. With a dog. With a turkey leg. With Zena's SWORD! Zena pushed them all into the tent and threw her arms around the whole pointy, greasy, familiar mess. "Where have you been? It's been a whole day. We have a young new member and a crazy slave, Joxcenia is covered with leeches and she might kill the slave, I fell off the wall and lost my sword, they put me in a cage, there are only 2 centuries of Romans here, whatever happened to Lurker Sue and I didn't know you kept a pet," Zena said in one breath. Evergreen slapped a hand over Zena's mouth and hissed in her ear "Shut up!"

The Road Home
Evergreen slapped a hand over Zena's mouth and hissed in her ear "Shut up!"
She was overjoyed and would like to have lingered in the welcoming embrace. Evergreen knew that there was a part of her in Zena. They had fought side by side, sang songs to celebrate their friends, and how could she ever forget the wonderful Solistice present, that wonderful coat.
"Zena, my friend, there will be time for this later. Whoever occupies this tent may return at any moment," Little Dog growled a gutteral sound with ears to the alert. " Is he a Roman dog? Can I expect an assualt below my knees?', Zena asked smiling."
Zena had still not let go of Evergreen. And in a place where time is altered and is slowed to see every crashing moment , Little Dog lunged at Roman boots. A short sword was raised and ready to strike. " No!",cried Evergreen spinning Zena away as the sword found its mark. Evergreen stood, reaching back for Zena, and looking into the disbelieving eyes of a young soldier. "Just-a-boy...",Evergreen whispered. She knew that this time, there would be no warm comfortable bed with brightly colored blankets at Cyrene's. There will not be another day to fight.
As she began to fall,Zena caught her and carried her weight to the ground. The young soldier again raised his sword to strike,Zena turns, sobbing, and tells him, " I don't care. Do what you must do." The boy hesitates, and as tears fill his eyes, drops his sword. " I have never killed before. I didn't know it would be like this." "What DID you think it would be like",sobbed Zena. "I didn't know...I didn't know. You must leave this place, you must leave now before the others return." Zena looked at the pain in his young eyes. " I will NOT leave without her!" If you feel sorrow then help me!"
Little Dog bolted out the flap of the tent and down the path where Evergreen had left Whisperer. Zena and the young soldier carried Evergreen outside laying her in the grass. Zena looks down the path. "By the gods!" There, coming up the path, was Little Dog,reins in his mouth, short legs in a crisp cadence, and leading Whisperer. Zena looks into the face of her friend, kneels, brushes the chestnut hair with splases of silver and smiles. " Boy, help me place her on her horse." Zena and the young soldier gently place Evergreen across the saddle of her trusted champion. Zena mounts Ergo, the soldier hands her Whisperer's reins.
Zena soflty kicks Ergo and starts down the path. Little Dog does not move. Whisperer halts, looks back at Little Dog,pounds the ground, turns away, and with his great head held high, begins his journey to carry Evergreen home.
------------------------------------------------------------------------ Joxcenia - 02:19am May 4, 2002 ET (#54 of 330) I Came... I Saw... I Went Home! lol
So... the slavegirl has some backbone after all, Joxcenia thought to herself. It's always good to know just how far you can push a person. The only thing keeping her from asserting herself even more is fear of what the tribe will do to her if she were to overpower me. She either hasn't had much training in the art of warfare, or she's being clever enough to disguise it. I most definitely can't let her out of my sight.
Joxcenia turned away from Puella and waded back to shore. Gee Jox... going back into the icy water to smack "chickenstick" <Chicken = fowl -- stick = sh** -- as in... Foul stench! lol> around wasn't such a good idea. Brrrrrr! Joxcenia shivered from the extreme cold that raced up her wet legs toward the top of her head. Fortunately it didn't have far to travel. Twice in one night! Well, at least I'll sleep tonight without dancing, disrobing gladiators invading my dreams.
"Ahem..." Xwpfan cleared her throat. "Do you think the slavegirl is right about the ten legions coming in two moons?"
Joxcenia glanced back at Puella shivering uncontrollably in the water. "I doubt it," she growled. "The Romans would never let her overhear their plans.... unless she's a spy." She leaned down and scratched a twitching nerve on her leg. "Egads!" She yelled as she discovered there was a leech attached to the very spot. She glanced back in Puella's direction and mumbled under her breath... "Why I oughta!"
"Maybe she's had enough," Xwpfan suggested. "Queen Saxy would like to keep her alive."
"If she's a spy... she could prove useful." Joxcenia mused aloud. Yes.... the others could pretend to feel sorry for the way I'm treating her and make her think they're embracing her into the fold.... they could feed her lies and see if she takes the information back to the Romans. "OUT!" Jox barked. "NOW!.......... And leave those leeches be.... they bring out your complexion...."

Girlpower continued to stare at Joxcenia, when she heard her say, “Out, Now, and leave those leeches be… they bring out your complexion.” I arose from the water, but not before carefully removing the buggers from the sensitive areas. Once on dry land, I attempted to keep the cold I felt to myself. I could see that Joxcenia and xwpfan were talking, but the chattering of my teeth kept me from hearing what they said. Obviously they are discussing whether to trust the information I had given them. Knowing Joxcenia would never forgive herself, if her tribe suffered because she failed to warn them. We headed back to the camp.
Gp was grateful to see a fire burning as they arrived back at the camp. The Amazons that remained there were pacing about. Every now and then I hear a snicker from the others. Obviously due to the 5 or so leeches still attached to my body. . I only hope that the fire will dry them out enough that the buggers will release me, or Joxcenia , becoming distracted, so I can remove them myself. Slowly I watched Sue approach, with an apple. I took it nodding thankfully. While Joxcenia spoke to a couple of the Amazons, I ate the apple and slowly picked off one leech at a time and threw them into the fire. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ EvergreenLM - 07:51pm May 4, 2002 ET (#56 of 330) "To Conquer Others is to Know Power...to Conquer Yourself is to Know the Way"
The Fates Were Not Amused
As Zena lead the Whisperer down the path, the sight of the Roman encampment left from her view. Everything had happened so fast there was no time to react. Just as she begin to tear up again, she heard uncontrollable laughing.
She turned in time to see Evergreen swing up onto Whisperer and shooting her a message with her eyes that danced with mischief. "Well, do you think THAT sufficiently scared the boy into going home to his mother?"
Zena flew off Ergo, grabbed Evergreen by the fringe on her tunic and pulled her off Whisperer. She slammed her shoulders down and pinned her to the ground. " That was NOT funny! Do you hear me, NOT funny!" I thought you were gone, that I had lost my friend! Don't EVER do that again, EVER! Do you hear me!
Evergreen stopped laughing at the sight of Zena's face,so full of anger, pain, and relief all into one look. "I am sorry, really, I am." Evergreen reached up and gently grabbed Zena's arm. "Help me up, please, let me up."
Zena rose off Evergreen, extended her arm, and pulled her up. There was only silence, each not knowing what to say to the other next. " I SAW the short sword pierce your tunic",Zena said softly. " I saw it."
Evergreen looked at the slit in her tunic and reached underneath. "Here, leather maps, battle plans. I rolled them up and put them inside my tunic just before you came in. I stepped back and turned with the thrust of the sword. It glanced off the folds of the maps." Evergreen grabbed her friend's shoulder, looked down to the ground and back into her face. " I AM sorry." I didn't mean to make you cry."
Evergreen put her fingers to her lips and whislted. Little Dog came flying out of the underbrush. "Let's go my friends. The Fates may not smile in my favor another time. We need to get the maps to the others."
Little Dog looked at the two friends. "This ought to be a fun trip." He leapt into Evergreens arms and she mounted Whisperer. Zena, still not moving, looked at Evergreen, "Okay, but NEVER again, promise?" With a smile and a wink, Evergreen raises her hand,"Promise".

Mortal Beloved
The rage and sorrow inside Zena was nearly suffocating as she led Whisperer through the western gate. The sentries were temporarily gone, moving toward the diversion that could be heard rising to a crecendo.
Zena stood a half of a head taller than Evergreen and had been bent forward to greet her in the armory tent. She had not seen or heard the boy who stabbed her come in and she was racked with guilt. Seeing her friend die because she had let down her guard was overwhelming and she felt as if the sword that pierced Evergreen had also sliced her own soul. Struggling for control she vowed to take Evergreen's body safely to the meadow in the valley and return to throw her whole heart into killing every Roman that breathed. Just as she begin to tear up again, she heard uncontrollable laughing.
She turned in time to see Evergreen swing up onto Whisperer and shooting her a message with her eyes that danced with mischief. "Well, do you think THAT sufficiently scared the boy into going home to his mother?" Later, Zena barely could recall the next few minutes after she realized her friend was alive. The release was nearly as exhausting as the suffering. She did remember that she had said over and over, "Don't do that again", and that she decided she would give Evergreen a few hours of the "silent treatment" after the battle just to emphasize that she was NOT HAPPY!
The sound of the battle drifted towards them: swords clanging, arrows falling like deadly rain, shouts and shrieks. Simultaneously they turned their heads and Zena tore off the Roman tunic that she still wore over her Amazon garb. "Do you think you can put your energy into something helpful?," she snarled. "Lucky you said something before I lit your funeral pyre. Let's go...and your little dog too." They mounted the horses and wheeled to the right headed for the conflict.

Once Bitten.... Twice Shy.....
Once back at camp, Joxcenia told her remaining sisters what Puella had let slip. "I say it's all lies," she growled. "but we still need to be prepared on the off chance that she knows of what she speaks." All heads nodded in agreement. "Someone needs to go and inform the Queen of this latest news, as well as my plans on how to deal with this 'chickenstick'." She glanced over that the slavegirl and pretended not to notice her pulling off the few remaining leeches. "Hummmmm, I can't be the one to go. I have to stay and make Puella's life miserable to keep my plan on track. "Xwpfan, why don't you..." Xwpfan was off and running before Joxcenia could even get the words out of her mouth. "You're welcome!" Jox called after her. "And don't think I'm not aware of you ogling me as I bathed earlier this evening!" If the gods be with me, Xwpfan won't have been close enough to notice just how COLD the water actually was....... Hummmm.... now what do I do with "chickenstick" until the others get back to regroup and see how awful I've been to her? Jox snickered to herself as her sisters went their different ways. Hopefully the others will be back soon. How hard could it be to retrieve a sword anyway?
"You two," Jox called to a couple of her sisters who were guarding the prisoner. "Take her and stake her out over there." She pointed to a dark, grassy mound that was far from the fire.
"But.... isn't that an ant mound?" cried Lurker Sue. "They'll be biting her all night."
Joxcenia shot Lurker Sue a look that could kill... if she were a god, that is. Which fortunately for Lurker Sue she wasn't. "If you don't wish to join her, I suggest you go be helpful somewhere else." No sooner were the words out of Jox's mouth than Lurker Sue ran and hid behind some trees.
What now? There's nothing to do but wait until the morning light. Hopefully the raid on the Roman camp was successful, and the others will soon be returning to camp. If not, a second war party will have to go out and give the first group some relief. Joxcenia pondered these thoughts as she made her way to a nice soft pallet beside the fire.

------------------------------------------------------------------------ phalon - 01:59am May 5, 2002 ET (#59 of 330)
The trail was easy enough to follow, but Phalon had no idea how far ahead the Amazons were. They had almost two days head start and she did not know if they were still following the Romans, if they had discovered the Roman camp or if the battle had begun already.
She wished she had her own horse, Aronia. She knew though, that she had made the right decision in leaving her behind. Without knowing how far she must travel, she needed a fresh horse and Aronia had been worked hard the last couple of days. She was extremely grateful that Cyrene had let her take Agapanthus, although he was a bit more skiddish than she would have liked. Maybe he was picking up on her nervous excitement.
Cyrene. What a generous woman. Giving her the horse. Taking in that wounded man, without giving it a second thought. The sole survivor of a village destroyed by the Romans. Or was he? A horrible thought entered Phalon's mind. She and Cyrene had just asumed that he was one of the villagers, a victim of the carnage the Romans left behind. But what if he were a Roman! They were disguised as thieves and the man was dressed in nondescript clothing - clothing either a villager or thief might wear.
Phalon would never forgive herself if she had put Cyrene in danger by bringing a Roman into the tavern, leaving Cyrene alone to care for him. Should she turn back or continue on to help in the ensueing battle? She had already traveled a little more than a day. How much further until she reached the Amazons?
Phalon bit her lip. She slowed the horse to a walk. Continue or turn back? What to do, what to do?
The faint sounds of a high pitched battle cry and swords clashing abruptly answered Phalon's question.

DIVERSIONS, DIVERSIONS
As Lucystar left the group, she starts planing her part of the diversions. "Oh I'm gonna like this part. What tricks can my evil mind come up with?" As an idea pops in her head, she lets out an evil laugh "Muahahaha" Stopping, she shakes her head. "Been hanging around Saxy too much. I've even picked up her 'evil' laugh" As Lucystar ponders that last thought, "Nah, you never can spend too much time with her. The Queen just has a way about her that makes everyone around her feel good." Lucystar smiles as she remembers the food fight with the lima beans just a couple days ago that now seems like a lifetime ago. Lost in thought, Lucystar almost walks right into one of the Roman guards. Luckily, she caught herself in time, or more to the point, caught him in time. A quick knee to the appropriate place caused him to double over and a double-handed blow to the back of the neck sent him to wherever Roman soldiers went when they lose a fight. The guard never had a chance to sound an alarm. "Ok, Lucy, quit daydreaming and get busy making these Romans wish they'd never set foot on this land." With that she snuck into the camp. "First order of business is to take out their food supply." Silently Lucystar hit the supply tent. Using her dagger, she methodically sliced the bottoms out of the grain sacks spilling the contents on the ground. "Now let's make them some mush". She then gouged holes in the bottom of the water barrels. Smirking to herself "Let's add a little flavor to that. Didn't Cyrene always add a touch of wine when she cooked." Now wine mixed with the water and grain. As she surveyed the fruits of her labor, she smiled "Who said I can't cook?" "Fruits? That reminds me..." Lucystar reaches up and pulls the bag off her shoulder, reaching in she pulls out a medium sized clay pot. "This should gross them out and they'll think twice about taking a bite of that fruit or veggie." Almost giggling to herself, she goes to the sacks hanging from the center tent posts. Opening the tops she dumps something into each bag. "Glad I stopped to look under a few rocks on my way here. Those grubs, beetles and worms ought to enjoy their feast tonight." Looking around, rather pleased with herself, Lucystar creeps out of the tent looking around for her next victim.

I must get to the Queen...
Girlpower tensed up as two Amazons escorted her to a mound of grass and dirt in the distance. At least I was able to get the leeches off and a bite to eat before being bound. As they staked me in place I noticed a mound. Great, ants! At least I am far enough away from the fire that I’ll grow cold and the stinging bites won’t be as bad. Joxcenia certainly has a thing for bugs.
Good thing everyone forgot about the dagger I keep under my skirt. I could have used it back at the creek, but xwpfan was there and I could not have gotten to her before the others were alerted. Thank the gods that Joxcenia didn’t make me undress for my bath. Now I must wait till all are asleep or distracted. I must get to Queen Saxy.
Throughout the night my guards have been watchful. Sue came and sat by the fire, so Joxcenia must be asleep. Sue is a timid one, she never would have come out of hiding until she felt she was safe. I had been working my binds all evening, but they were still too tight for me to escape. I’m going to need help. I started jostling about uncomfortably until Sue caught my eye. She walked towards me and whispered, “Sorry about the leeches.” The guards noticed her nearing and waved for her to stop. She did so, until I pleaded, “Could someone please, scratch my ankles? They itch horribly!” Both glanced at me with pity. “We know better then to cross Joxcenia.” Sue again started walking, and said, “Come on you guys, you know this is a bit overboard, what threat is she bound? I’ll be right here, and if I need help I’ll yell.” They nodded and let her approach. Like little fingers from heaven she rubbed the bites on my legs. I didn’t want to show how much the ants were bothering me, but it was evident by my reaction to Sue’s touch. The guards agreed with Sue and moved about, stretching their legs and warming themselves. I thanked Sue for her compassion, and asked one more favor. “My right wrist, can you look and see if there is a leech in between the ropes and my skin?” The guilt she felt about giving Joxcenia the location of the creek appeared all over her face. She reached over and touched the ropes. “I can’t see anything.” “Just feel around for it.” GP pleaded. Slowly, Sue unwrapped the rope feeling for the leech. As soon as the rope loosened, GP rolled hard to her left, catching Sue off guard. Hand now freed GP reached for her dagger and cut the remaining ties. “Sorry Sue, you must learn who to trust.” With that said, GP knocked Sue unconscious. In a flash GP was gone, not looking back towards the camp. I must catch up with xwpfan before she gets word to the Queen.

LUCYSTAR'S PRANKS CONTINUE
Snaking around the camp, Lucystar pulls a tent stake up here, cuts a rope there and runs a few tripwires across the front of a couple of tents. At last finding herself behind the Roman officers tent, she pulls one last 'trick' out of her now almost empty bag. To herself "Wouldn't want the officers to feel left out." Lucystar lifts the the back of the tent up and crawls quietly on her belly up to the first bedroll. She opens the small clay pot she had dangling from her teeth by the leather strip tied around the pot. In her head she smirks, "Glad I noticed that ant hill before I left camp. I love that phrase 'got ants in your pants?'" She stretches her arm out as far away from her body as she can and getting the pot as close to the bedrolls as she can, she tips the pot over and pours out it's contends. Suddenly liberated, hundreds of ants begin making their paths to the bedrolls of the sleeping officers. Lucystar quickly backs out of the tent and takes off back to camp. Halfway there, she hears mens' voices yelling at each other "I didn't pick the tent site." "Get them off" "Do it yourself". She turns and in the moonlight sees several men running around flapping their arms, beating themselves. The last voice she hears before turning away yells "To the river! Go to the river!"
With all the yelling and screaming coming from the Roman campsite, no one heard the evil laugh float up to the stars "Muahahaha!"
------------------------------------------------------------------------ saxgoddess25 - 05:02am May 5, 2002 ET (#63 of 330) I have the soul of a bard and the heart of a warrior. My vengeance is swift and complete.
Saxy crept along the picket lines, senses alert for any movement or sound from the tents. She loved this particular job the most. Freeing the horses to roam as they would while the enemy chased after them was the most fun, and one of the most dangerous, tactics that she knew to confuse and anger one's opponent.
The razor sharp blade of her dagger made quick work of the thick hemp cords and the horses were free. Tucking the bejewelled dagger back between her breasts, she picked up a switch and swatted the nearest horse on the rump. With a squeal it jumped into motion, startling the rest of the horses in the line. Once the lead horse was free, the rest followed in a herd, hooves thundering as they sped across the valley. Saxy slunk back into the shadows and watched a group of shouting men roll out of the tents and run after their fleeing mounts.
Saxy had spotted Lucystar heading toward the mess tent, and had not supressed the quirky grin that floated across her lips. "Atta girl," the queen whispered. Since her job was done, Saxy crept back toward the amazon's camp and paused in the undergrowth. She unslung the bow from her back and nocked an arrow. Then she settled down to make sure all her sisters made it back from their foray.
Suddenly she spotted a figgure moving swiftly toward her. Saxy melded back into the shadows, letting the figgure run past her position and then catching it from behind before it could take more than a few steps. Dragging the person down into the bushes, Saxy peered into the shocked eyes of Xwpfan. Once the other woman had recognized the queen and would not shout out, Saxy took her hand away from Xwpfan's mouth.
"What is going on?"
"That Roman slave. Joxcenia was making her take an ice bath with the leeches and she let something slip. She said that there were 10 legions headed this way."
"Gods," Saxy scrubbed a hand across her forehead. "There can't be that many. We haven't even figgured out why these Romans are here yet." Saxy thought for a long moment. Her eye caught a group of Roman officers spilling from the command tent, flailing their arms about and shouting. The Queen of the Amazons smirked as she heard a faint "Muahahaha!" off to the left of where they stood. Oh Gods, she's even started to laugh like me. This is bad. Very bad.
Finally she turned back to Xwpfan. "Okay, this is what we're going to do..."
Before Saxy could continue a figgure appeared out of the darkness, pelting through the bracken and underbrush. Saxy and Xwpfan went very still. As it passed their hiding place Saxy's eyes narrowed. It was Puella Virium and she was headed straight for the Roman camp.
Saxy rose up and in one smooth movement, let the arrow fly. She saw the slave pitch forward onto her face, an arrow protruding from her right shoulder. Aim's a little off old girl...but that'll do. Cautiously the queen crept forward with Xwpfan close behind. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ EvergreenLM - 10:10am May 5, 2002 ET (#64 of 330) "To Conquer Others is to Know Power...to Conquer Yourself is to Know the Way"
They Went That Away
Evergreen and Zena rode hard to the direction of the sounds of clashing swords, and Amazon war cries. They came upon a small and outnumbered group of Amazons engaged in a desperate fight with the Romans.
Evergreen lifted Little Dog down to the ground.
"Go on now, you don't want to be a part of this."
Evergreen and Zena whirled the horses around and with swords drawn, charged forward into the battling group.
"Aiiiii-Yah!"
Evergreen showed no mercy swinging her sword from man to man,Roman after Roman falling to the ground, spilling their blood. She jumped from her horse and with Zena at her back, continued to slash side to side, blade finding its mark time after time. The battle began to turn, and the Romans who were not dead, or lying mortally wounded, ran for the forest. Evergreen charged as to chase after them.
"No",Zena shouted. "Let them go,they're finished."
Evergreen stopped and looked at her bloody sword. Blood of men who believed they too were fighting for a cause, The "Greater Glory of Rome".
Panting heavily, with shoulders taut and white knuckles gripping the sword, she walked back to where Zena and the others were now standing.
Evergreen recognized the women as Amazons by their clothing and beads. And yet, they were strangers.
"Who ARE you?" "What are you doing out here?"
Little Dog had returned and was staring intently at one of the women still near the trees trying to make herself unobtrusive. Little Dog's ears went to the alert and growled.
"You there, come forward!" "What is your name?"
"I, I, well..."
"Tell me your name or you will be telling your name to Hades".
And with Evergreen's sword pointed to her throat, "I am GP"...

xwpfan - 12:00pm May 5, 2002 ET (#65 & 66 of 330)
prisoner dealings
I was silently running as fast as I could through the Roman encampment in search of Queen Saxy.As I passed through some undergrowth just before the Roman camp I was grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground. Dazed and embarrassed at being caught off guard, I looked into my attcker's eyes it was Queen Saxy.
Upon realizing it was the Queen,I told her what the Roman slave had let slip during her leech bath! 10 legions! It just sounded so improbable; and so very lethal. I had no sooner given the Queen the news than in the shadows walked the very Roman scum I had reported on... Puella Virium. Before I could even draw back my bow,Queen Saxy had already let an arrow fly- right into the slave's right shoulder. I could tell by the Queen's expression that the arrow had not quite hit where she had wanted..
Queen Saxy crept ahead of me, inching herself towards the wounded slave. It was normal for Queen Saxy to handle things like these herself but I couldn't help thinking that she should let me take the lead...
As Queen Saxy approached the Roman slave I caught just a glint of steel coming from the slave's body. By the gods she had a weapon!!! Queen Saxy must not have seen the glint of the weapon.I leapt on top of the slave and wrestled the dagger from her..she spat in my face as I pinned her to the ground she hissed "You may have beaten me, but you haven't won anything!"
Anger surged inside of me, this time I was going to finish the job I was not going to let this Roman dog hurt anyone else! I raised my sword to slay her when I heard Queen Saxy cry
"NO! Don't kill her Xwpfan.. I want her alive!
I heeded my Queen's words. I did not kill her, but did exact a bit of revenge of my own. I thrust my sword intothe slave's right side giving her a nice bloody gash. I whispered as I withdrew my blade "Twice you've been spared my wrath,Count yourslf lucky, there won't be a third. I promise you, you'll be praying for your own death because what Joxencia did to you will be nothing compared to what will be done to you if i have to deal withyou again!!
My attention then turned back to my Queen, I knelt beside her and and awaited her displeasure for my wounding the prisoner.
To my surprise she said "Get up, You may have saved my life tonight, your actions are forgiven but we will speak of this later.
Once again, I had the Roman slave girl as a prisoner. I took a deep breath, there had to be a way to get out of prisoner detail.. I wanted to be apart of the plan Queen Saxy had told me moments before the slavegirl appeared.
Desparately I searched for something, then I spotted the reigns of a horse. I quickly took them off the horse and cut them into leather straps. I tied one around the slavegirl's hands and then bound her feet. I then took one leather strap wrapped it around her torso and tied the other end to my right wrist.I pushed the wounded slavegirl to the ground and I mounted a Romans steed .I was going to drag the slave til she was unconcious ,but could I do it without being spotted by the Romans?
Just then Lucystar appeared "I saw what happened what can I do to help?"
I siezed my opportunity; " Take care of this garabage, but don't kill her Queen Saxy wants her alive! I gave Lucystar the leather strap from around my wirst and said "Watch her..don't Ever turn your back to her! Oh and you might want to stop her from bleeding before she brings the Romans right to you."
Queen Saxy motioned for Lucystar. Queen Saxy made sure she was out of ear shot as she said in a whisper "This attempted attack on me means nothing. I still want you to to drag her for a bit then let her make her escape but follow her closely.. it may be the only way we can find out what she's up to."
Queen saxy then turned her full attention back to me and said "Xwpfan it is clear that you have good intentions and your heart is in the right place, but you Must think about the greater good before you act. If you had killed that Roman slave we would have never known what she was up to ..now we atleast have a chance." Feeling ashamed ,I said "Yes, my Queen." Then Queen Saxy smirked and said "Don't be ashamed, you saved my life and I still want you to proceeed with the plan I told you about earlier. With the words barely out of her mouth I was once again racing on foot through the woods to join up with my sisters..we had a plan to institute~

PRISONER DETAIL
Muttering "Great, just what I wanted, prisoner detail. Well, at least I get a chance for a little revenge of my own on this slave for attempting to kill our queen and one of my best friends."
Lucystar looks at the bleeding gash and groans "gods, I gotta tend her wound, too. Xwpfan", shooting her a deadly glare, "I'm gonna get you for this one." Lucystar is not happy that xwpfan dumped this slave off on her. She should be the one to go with Queen Saxy, hasn't she been Saxy's right hand and confidant in all of this. As Saxy senses Lucystar's rising anger she comes over to her. Lucystar stifles her anger as Saxy confides in her that the 'prisoner detail' will be short.
After roughly binding the wound on the slave's side and with leather strap in hand, Lucystar leaps aboard the horse that xwpfan had brought over. Wrapping the strap around the saddlehorn, she looks back at the slave and growls "Hang on, it's going to be a BUMPY ride." With that, and a kick to the horse's ribs, she takes off jerking the slave of her feet.
About halfway back toward camp, Lucystar pulls the horse to a stop. Looking back at the slave for the first time, it appears the woman is unconscious. Dismounting, Lucystar walks up to the still body. Using her senses as Xena taught her, she watches for signs indicating the woman is faking. Then it happens, a slight twitch of the lips. Silently, "Oh, you think you can trick me. No way! I learned from the best." Now comes the hardest part. "gods, this is tough on my ego. I've got to LET this slave think I'm stupid and give her the opportunity to escape. Saxy...You're going to pay dearly for this one." Lucystar kneels down next to the body and leaning over, puts a finger to her pulse point. Immediately, the lips curl back and the slave grabs the hand and flips Lucystar on her back. Pouncing on her, she raises the bound hands and lands a blow to the prone figure's head. Of course, Lucystar was ready and went with the blow. Faking her own unconscious state now, she hears the slave scramble up on the horse and head back in the direction from which they came. The Roman Camp.
As the hoofbeats fade, Lucystar sits up rubbing her temple. "gods, that is going to give me a headache. Now Saxy owes me double." Looking off in the direction of the now faint hoofbeats, Lucystar gets up and heads towards where she last saw Saxy. "No need to hurry up and follow the slave. It's clear where she's headed." With a hand to her head, Lucystar grumbles "Boy, does she OWE me, Big Time."

gabbyfan4ever - 02:53pm May 5, 2002 ET (#68 of 330)
Little Gabbyfan was almost jumping with anticipation to get started with the diversion. However, once the battle ensued, gabbyfan was thrust into something she could not have imagined. Swords were flying everywhere, and the Romans greatly outnumbered her, and her new Amazon sisters. Using her fighting staff more as defense than a killing tool, gabbyfan fought to stay alive, and fought for her sisters. No matter the outcome. The little Amazon had already recieved a substantial sword wound to her left side. Just when the battle looked hopeless, Evergreen and Zena joined the fight!
zena - 03:25pm May 5, 2002 ET (#69 of 330) "Agere Sequitur Esse"
Battle On...
(Slashing, stepping around, over men, dead and dying. Strike, pull the sword out from the body. Look into the eyes of the enemy and see yourself. And everywhere is mud and blood.)
The two friends worked their way through the battle and Zena suddenly spotted Little Gabbyfan staggering from a blow to her side. Before the soldier could finish his work, she sent him to the next world and caught Little Gabbyfan with her free arm. The battle had broken up and Zena shouted to Evergreen to return as she lowered Gabbyfan to the ground beneath a tree. "Let me look", she instructed as she sheathed her sword. Behind her she heard Evergreen addressing someone who was still alive and heard that familiar voice answer. "GP."
"AGAIN?" Zena was losing patience with this bad dinar who kept showing up everywhere. "You know this woman? And who is this young Amazon?" Evergreen asked. "If I was speaking to you (and I'm not yet until you have served your penance) I would tell you the story but you'll just have to wait until later. Trust me, tie her down and we'll take her back." Zena turned back to Little Gabbyfan whose eyes were large in a pale face. "As soon as I get this bleeding under control we'll join our sisters. Shh, it will be alright, hold this dagger hilt against your side as hard as you can. Do you understand what I mean about avoiding war?" "Don't lecture me now Zena, please!" whispered Gabbyfan as she lost conciousness.
The silence of the stilled battle was suddenly broken by shouts. "By Ares they are coming back! And we are cut off from everyone else. This has been a really bad day," Zena said. "You can say that again," Evergreen murmured. "I'm still not speaking to you," Zena grunted as she took up her defensive posture back to back with Evergreen.

Right back where I started...
I can’t believe I’m right back where I started, with Zena at the Roman camp. This time I am the captive. I look down at my ragged body, my right shoulder bandaged, but the damage has been done. I won’t be able to use that arm for battle, for quite a while. Standing there, tethered to Evergreen, Zena lays Gabbyfan on the ground. Zena shouts, ”By Ares they are coming back! And we are cut off from everyone else. This has been a really bad day.” Girlpower nods in agreement with the statement. I had run all night to catch up with xwpfan, and she found her too late. Now the Queen knows about the reinforcements on the way. I see why Caesar felt all the troops were necessary to take control over this land. These Amazons fight with heart. Even little Gabbyfan has battled to protect her family. I looked at Zena, “Let me take Gabbyfan to the others. You won’t be able to fight the soldiers and protect her. I will make sure she gets to safety.” Zena did not trust GP, but what she said is true. I can’t see to her and battle. “What I will do to you will be worse then death, if Gabbyfan isn’t protected.” Zena said. With that said Zena nodded to Evergreen, and she released me. I bent down to Gabbyfan and checked her wound. It was still bleeding, but not as heavily as before. I took off the leg band that once held my dagger, and wrapped the little warriors wound, tight. Since my right shoulder is damaged I lifted her over my left shoulder. Good thing she is a little one. GP stood and began walking, right towards the incoming troops. One of the soldiers running forward recognized her, “Puella Virium, what are you doing here?” “What you weren’t able to do, there are two others straight ahead, be sure to capture them!” GP growled. Evergreen and Zena watched in horror as Puella took their littlest sister away and 20 soldiers surrounded them.

Meanwhile... Elsewhere....
The leader of one group of bandits had his men herd their captures toward Rome, where they would be either sold into slavery, as gladiators, or as food for the lions to entertain the crowds at the coliseums. It would be two moons before he would be back with the main infantry. By the gods... why did he leave his slavegirl, 'Penthesilea' behind with them? He could sure use her to work out the kinks in his sore and tired muscles. What strong hands she has. She could probably break his neck with them if she wanted, but he knew she wouldn't.
He had stolen her from a tribe of Amazons when she was just a child. Had even seared his family crest over a birthmark to prevent anyone from discovering her identity. He had taken her from this part of the country in fact. She was home.... and she didn't even realize it. He laughed to himself. She would never leave him... this he knew because he had given her several chances to run away and she never did. He had worked like a dog to gain her trust, and a woman's heart always ruled over her head. She would never realize that all she was to him was a boot-licker.
"The plan is going to work this time." One footsoldier said to another. "The other villagers will be begging for Rome to send in their armies to protect them from the bandits. And then we'll have the whole country under control before they even know what hit them!"
"Shut up!" yelled the leader. "If you ever discuss strategy in front of the captives again, I'll have you staked to a cross. Is that clear?"

Bad Day at Black Rock
With the soldiers advancing, Evergreen instinctively positioned herself at Zena's back with sword at the ready.
"Zena, its time you talked to me. It may be the last thing you will ever say and I will ever hear."
LittleGabbyFan was barely conscious when the woman who appeared to have the power to give orders to Roman soldiers took her away. Evergreen felt sick at the sight of her being removed from their protection.
"Zena, I KNOW I promised not to die on you again, but this does NOT look so good." Did you KNOW that woman?"
"She is NOT who she said she was",Zena whispered.
"She is a slave that was captured by the others when you were back at Cyrene's. She calls herself "Puella Virium",but we had decided from the beginning she was anything BUT a slave."
The soldiers had stopped their advance. The tall one with green eyes and battled marked face, appeared to be in command. A voice called him by name. He walked over to a figure half hidden in a stand of trees.
By their body language, Evergreen felt that the Roman commander was not pleased with the lone figure was saying. The Roman soldier stands to,turns, and walks back to where Evergreen and Zena stood ready to fight.
"Let them go!". "You two, over there!",pointing to the figure in the woods.
"Who IS that?",Zena whispers. "His staff has the insignia of the Roman Senate."
Cautiously, the two move towards the stand of trees. The figure steps from behind the shadows revealing it was as Zena had thought.
A man appears dressed not for battle but of wealth and upmost importance. Someone who was used to giving orders that could change the destiny of a country. A man with silver hair, chiseled features, and an air of power stands before them. He stares at Evergreen with eyes as blue as the ice behind them.
He slowly and deliberately speaks.
"Evergreen".
Evergreen lowers her sword, and with an unmistakable tone of defiance utters,
"Hello father."

A Day In The Life
Evergreen lowers her sword, and with an unmistakable tone of defiance utters, "Hello father." Zena, not fully comprehending what she has heard, takes a step forward but Evergreen grabs her tunic and pulls her back. "What?" "It's my father."
Sweat and blood trickled down Zena's forehead as she turned to face her friend. Slowly she brought her sword arm down and whispered, "All right, I'll talk to you. What in the name of Hades is going on here? First you show up with a pet dog and now you've collected a father! I thought you were an orphan from Thrace like me."
The soldiers moved in taking the opportunity to grab Zena while her sword was down. Evergreen shoved them back and the stately Roman raised his hand, "Leave us. This woman is my daughter, I have nothing to fear."
Exhausted, Zena sank to the ground to try and make sense of the scene unfolding before her, and to keep one eye on the retreating back of Puella with little Gabbyfan. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ girlpower - 10:00pm May 5, 2002 ET (#74 of 330) Courage is not the absence of fear..but the strength to conquer it.
tending to the wounded...
Puella Virium carried Gabbyfan still unconscious, into the woods, towards a small gathering of soldiers. She is so young, she never should have been out there in the battle. On the way she noticed a member of the Roman Senate at the tree line. He paid little attention to her, which was good. This is no time to be distracted by a bunch of questions, or worse having to tend to someone else’s needs. I need to get Gabbyfan tended to. I told Zena I could take care of the girl. I motioned to a soldier, showing him my family crest on my right shoulder blade. There was so much damage from the wound he couldn’t recognize it at first, then his eyes opened wide. “Give me your healing pouch, if you don’t have one find one, and water!” Within a few moments he returned leather pouch in hand, and a skin of water. I took the items and told him to go. He walked away, but I could see him watching. Slowly I removed the dressing that covered her wound. It will need to be sewn. I carefully cleaned the wound and then began the process of sewing her flesh back together. Good thing she is still out, or this would hurt. Once I had done all I could I laid her down at the foot of a tree. She should wake soon. I motioned for the soldier who was still watching my every action. He was as young as this girl here. No experience at all, he will harm our actions in battle, more then help. I told him to watch her as I went to see what was happening at the camp. “If she wakes, come get me.” He timidly spoke, ”Puella Virium, you also have a wound that needs tending.” He was right, though I hated to admit it. I was able to break off the end of arrow that Queen Saxy shot, but the shaft was still imbedded in. Luckily when xwpfan stabbed me it pushed the arrow almost completely through, but now there is nothing to grab hold of for leverage. It will have to be dug out. “Can you heal?” I asked the boy. If not, now is time to learn. “Come here and dig this arrow shaft out, it may be splintered so be careful.” I thought he would pass out, but walked up to me and followed my every order. Only pausing when I let out a yelp. “You will have a nasty scar” he said when everything was done. “That’s alright, I like scars.” I said as I tried to smile at him. I checked out the rest of my body. I had other scrapes and tears, but came out no worse for the wear. I looked over and saw little Gabbyfan grimacing, good she is coming around. Amazing there by her was a little dog, wonder where he came from?

Behind enemy lines
Little Gabbyfan awoke with a pain in her side, and fear in her heart. She remembered losing consciousness while looking into zena's comforting eyes, and hearing her voice (although it was a lecture coming out of her mouth). Gabbyfan awoke momentarily to watch in horror as zena and evergreen were being surrounded by romans, and to feel herself being carried away from them, before losing conciousness again. Now she was fully awake, and aware of her surroundings. She was in a Roman camp, and the slave from the Amazon camp had brought her here. Zena and Evergreen must have been in dire straits to allow gabbyfan to be captured. Wincing, from the pain in her side, Gabbyfan inspected her wound. She was glad she was still out when her wound had been sowed up. She didn't want to let these Roman dogs see her cry. A moment later a young roman guard who stood over her called to the slave who brought her here. Girlpower was her name as gabbyfan remembered, and she obviously was in control here. Gabbyfan tensed up as GP approached her, she had no idea what they would decide to do to her. Fighting back tears of fear and worry about her Amazons sisters, gabbyfan looked at GP defiantly. Girlpower, knelt down to Gabbyfan and touched her wounded side. The little amazon could not hold back the yelp of pain that the touch had caused. The roman slave told Gabbyfan that she would be alright, and that they did not plan on killing her, as she was more useful alive. Gabbyfan mentally kicked herself for being a hinderance and weapon against her Amazon sisters.
GP got up and instructed the guard to get some rope. Girlpower, then gently yet efficiently bound the young amazon's hands and feet, and left her to the roman guards watch. As soon as the guard turned his back, gabbyfan let out the tears she had be holding in. The tears of pain, of worry, and of shame. Now gabbyfan was left to think of what would happen to her next, and what would happen to her Amazon sisters.

Meanwhile.... Back At Amazon Camp...
Joxcenia lay quietly as Lurker Sue neared the fire for warmth. She knew that Puella would take this as a sign that she was fast asleep. She'll fall for it, she thinks she's smarter than the whole Amazon tribes combined. It will be her downfall. Jox haphazardly scratched the birthmark on her right shoulder blade as she peered through her eyelashes at the slavegirl. If she escapes, she'll show her true colors to the tribe. No more "little miss innocent" anymore. What excuse can she use if she's caught back in enemy camp? "Ummm. I got lost!" I think not.
Lurker Sue hadn't been by the fire for too long when she walked over toward Puella. The guards protested at first, but let her get near to the prisoner in the end, just as instructed. Good.... plan B is working quite satisfactorily. Lurker Sue timidly did as Puella instructed out of tremendous guilt for her part in the leech bath, and it didn't take the slavegirl long to get loose and punch her lights out. Ohhh! That had to hurt. Jox rolled over to hide her evil smirk. Well... Lurker Sue should be more careful who she trusts next time.
Jox waited a few minutes before jumping up and barking orders. "Okay... everyone pack up, we're leaving and setting up camp at the next planned site. The others will know where to find us." She looked to the Amazon closest to Lurker Sue. "You.... throw that peasant over a horse and bring her along. Be sure to tie something around her eyes so she won't be able to see anything should she wake up before we reach our destination." I'm still not sure if we can trust her yet... but she's been quite useful, so it would be a shame to lose her potential to help out in the future. "After we set up the new camp, be sure to get a good night's rest. The queen will be expecting reinforcements in the morning."
girlpower - 02:53am May 6, 2002 ET (#78 of 330) Courage is not the absence of fear..but the strength to conquer it.
Puella Virium sat at the makeshift camp in the woods. Gabbyfan is bound and her wounds are healing. Lying beside her was that little dog that appeared shortly after I arrived here. Seems out of place for a dog such as that to be out here without an owner. The young soldier who tended my wounds is on guard. I think he’d keep an eye on the little warrior whether I ordered him to or not. My entire body is in need of rest, but I must stay awake until I hear of Evergreen and Zena. The soldiers should have captured them by now. I wonder if that Roman Senator has anything to do with the hold up? Not able to fight it any longer, sleep took me over. The next thing I see a girl standing in the middle of a burning village. I can hear loud noises and screams but no voices. The smells of smoke and blood overpowering my senses. The sound of hoof beats, the sensation of flying through the fields. I was startled awake by the little dog’s whine. Shaking my head I wondered, why is it always the same scene that haunts me? Gabbyfan was awake again and talking with the boy. I walk forward to see Gabbyfan’s condition. She flinched away from me as I checked her wound. “Looks like you will be well in no time.” I said. She looked at me hatefully. Yes she’ll be fine, I thought. As I walked away the two resumed their conversation, he seemed to have put her at ease, good, I can go see about the Amazons. When I approached the edge of the trees, I saw something I wasn’t prepared for. Evergreen was standing there with the Roman Senator, they were having what looked to be a heated conversation. Best not to disturb, I eased my way back into the woods and motioned to a soldier. What is going on? “One of those warriors is the Senator’s daughter. He called us off the two.” The soldier informed me. Oh Great! This complicates things...

A New View
The tent was guarded on all sides and escape would not yet be possible. Zena had to admit that her treatment had been respectful as she was parted from Evergreen. Evergreen. Who is Evergreen? Not the woman who had been her friend for years.
The tent flap lifted and Puella entered with two soldiers bearing little Gabbyfan. They placed her gently on a bed of straw and Zena knelt quickly beside her. She was awake but weak and her wounds held no heat. The stiches were well placed. Motioning Gabbyfan to silence Zena rose slowly to face Puella, extending her hand as she did. "You have kept your word. My sister is on the way to a full healing. Thank you." Puella hesitantly took Zena's hand and in doing so winced slightly. For the first time Zena took in the fullness of Puella's appearance. "What happened to you since last I saw you?! Your wrists are raw, there are bites all over you and you've been shot by an arrow and slashed by a knife. Those Romans are hideous." Deftly Zena checked Puella's wounds and applied healing herbs from the pouch Puella had brought in. Her face showed her compassion for she was both a healer for the tribe and a Keeper: the one who carries the sacred way of the Amazon code and teaches it to the young.
Puella had never known a gentle touch and she had to control the unexpected tears it brought. "I received these injuries at the hands of your sisters. They are not as they seem." Zena looked into Puella's eyes and saw truth there and she was for the first time ashamed.
The Healer and Keeper had much to ponder. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Joxcenia - 06:03pm May 6, 2002 ET (#80 of 330) I Came... I Saw... I Went Home! lol
Meanwhile.... Back At Amazon Camp II...
Ok... the reinforcements have been sent. Joxcenia muddled through the details in her mind. The tracks leading to the cave opening have been raked and drug over with broken branches... and bushes have been placed so that the opening can't be seen. A hospice is being set up as we speak... so we'll definitely be ready for when the wounded arrive.
"Lurker Sue," Jox called. "You can boil that water now."
Lurker Sue tilted her head to one side and gave Joxcenia a "Huh?" expression.
"Start sterilizing rags." Jox rolled her eyes upwards and mumbled under her breath. "Why didn't I just leave her back at the first camp?" Oh yeah... because until we know just where she really stands, it's best to keep her in plain sight... that's why. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ gabbyfan4ever - 07:30pm May 6, 2002 ET (#81 of 330)
After crying all the tears she had in her, little Gabbyfan fell asleep under the watchful eye of the young Roman guard. She curled up next to the little orphaned dog who had mysteriously stayed by her side, and used his body-heat for warmth.
Upon waking, little gabbyfan timidly asked the Roman Guard why he was in the army at such a young age. He responded that he would fight for the greater glory of Rome at any age, and Gabbyfan said she would do the same for her Amazon sisters. The thought of the unknown condition of her sisters and friends like Zena and Evergreen, caused the tears to come back. However, the guard did not laugh at her, but rather, in a comforting voice, assured the little amazon that Girlpower said she would not be killed. Despite misinterpreting the cause of her tears, she felt comforted by his words. He made her feel more secure in this cold and unfamiliar place. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ gabbyfan4ever - 07:36pm May 6, 2002 ET (#82 of 330)
As in on cue at the sound of her name, GP came over to Gabbyfan to check her wound. It was still painful to the touch, but felt better than it had. After giving the roman slave the most defiant and courageous look she could come up with under the circumstances, she continued her conversation with the guard.
Later that evening Gabbyfan was picked up and carried by the guard and another soldier to a tent. To her relief and surprise, Zena was inside and came over to check her wound. Gabbyfan wanted to throw her arms around Zena, and never leave her safe and comforting arms, but she was motioned to be silent instead. The great Amazon warrior then turned and, to Gabbyfan's confusion, extended her hand to Girlpower. All Gabbyfan knew then was that she was with Zena, and that they were safe... for now. But what of her other Amazon sisters, and what was said about the Amazons leaving Girlpower in her present condition. A million new thoughts raced through Gabbyfan's mind before she fell into an unwilling sleep. But she made sure Zena was the last thing she saw before her battle with against sleep was lost.

Ties That Bind
Evergreen watched as Zena was lead away. She knew her friend well, and saw the look of confusion and brief glimpse of betrayal. Evergreen would lay down her life for Zena, or take one to protect her. Be strong Zena.
Evergreen was brought before her father. Looking down, twirling a dagger on the table, he spoke.
"I don't understand you. Your mother was a captive Amazon slave and yet I raised you as a daughter of Rome. Look at you. You are a disgrace to my name. You could have had the power to rule nations and yet, you choose to be a part of your mother's pathetic history."
Evergreen looked at this man,her father. Justinian was a powerful man. A man who advised Caesar, admired by Pompey, feared in the Senate ,and an enemy of Xena.
"Father, I do not care what you do with me,but my friends..."
Justinian stands, the vessels in his face stand out as he leans forward and shouts.
"Silence! I have come to DESTROY your 'friends'. Soon, ALL of this land will be controlled by Rome. You can either bow or die at her feet."
Evergreen stood perfectly still. With a controlled anger, Evergreen whispers,
"I will NEVER bow to Rome!"
Justinian sat down, rocked back in chair with the dagger slowly tapping his chin.
"So be it. From this time on, I have no daughter. You have chosen your own destiny. The next time we meet you will be as a stranger, an Amazon, a dead Amazon. You are free to go. Tell your 'sisters' to pray to their gods for what I will bring down upon their heads."
"I will not leave without my friends."
With unexpected tenderness, Evergreen pleads for her friends.
"Father,please... Let me have the one called Zena and the young Amazon."
Justinian gives counsel to the words from this woman. She could have been the jewel of Rome. He reaches for a small parchment, scribbles on it, and hands it to her. The paper momentarily lingers in the exchange, neither ready to let go.
"Father, it does not have to be this way. I know that since mother died..."
"Get out! Leave me. Take those two and leave my sight forever!"
Evergreeen turns, exits the tent never looking back. She runs to the tent where Zena and Little Gabby are being held. She hands the note to the Sentry. He does not question it.
Zena stands with hands positioned to fight. She blocks Little Gabby from Evergreen's view.
"Zena, I know what you must be thinking. I can understand that. I should have told you long ago,but you MUST trust me now. I have come to take you both away from this place. I know where the others are now."
Zena slowly lowers her hands and steps aside. Little Gabby looks at the two friends.
"Zena, listen to her. If she is not telling the truth, our Queen will hand her a just fate."
Evergreen attempts to touch her friend's shoulder. She recoils, turns, and lifts Little Gabby. Evergreen is surprised to see Little Dog under Little Gabby's blanket. He moves closer to Little Gabby's side.
"Well, well, not even the dog..." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ zena - 10:19pm May 6, 2002 ET (#84 of 330) "Agere Sequitur Esse"
Sins of the Past For a moment there was silence as Zena lifted little Gabbyfan from the straw. She drew a deep breath. "Gabbyfan, this is Evergreen, my sister, your sister. We have been together since we were 8 years old when we were found by the Amazons. I hunted for her when she was sick and she did the same for me. We took our training and studies together and I would chose no other to stand at my back in a battle or sing with me at our celebrations. She is part of me," Zena whispered. Turning to Evergreen she continued, "What has been built between us is our common history. Years of trust are not wiped away in a moment, or two if you add in that fake death event earlier. I am the Keeper and I know the code of the Amazons. It says that what is sworn is sworn until our death and then beyond. I believe in you now, and I will no matter what. Evergreen this is your new sister, Gabbyfan." Evergreen smiled slowly and reached out briefly to touch Zena's shoulder and Gabbyfan's head, indicating with her other hand that their exit should be swift.
Puella lingered in the shadows confused at what she witnessed; compassion, forgiveness, courage and loyalty. How good it might be to be a part of this tribe! But what of the power of Rome? Zena shifted Gabbyfan's weight slightly and glanced at Puella. "What is it you wish to do? You can stay or come with us, either way I have business about you with our Queen."
Little dog jumped into Evergreen's arms from the warmth of his place where Gabbyfan had been. "Men", Evergreen laughed, "they are so fickle!"

Puella's decision
Puella watched from the shadows. Listening to Zena and Evergreen’s conversation, my heart ached to belong. My thoughts interrupted by a question, "What is it you wish to do? You can stay or come with us, either way I have business about you with our Queen." Puella’s mind raced, is this, an offer to leave this place and join them? What do I have here that I fight to the death for? My family has always treated me like a slave. Never offering me the attention I have received from Zena, in just the last moments. True I was always fed and had shelter, but I never had a connection to my family. I have never yearned to belong, only power did I seek. Yet during the little time I have spent with the Amazons I have experienced emotions I never thought I had. I know that Queen Saxy will have issues with me, due to all the trouble I have caused, but if I face her, it will be of my own free will. Mind made up, Puella spoke, “Let’s get out of here.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------ phalon - 03:08am May 7, 2002 ET (#86 of 330)
Phalon watches the Roman encampment from her hiding place on the ridge above. She has seen Evergreen, the one she refers to in her mind as the Wise One, speaking heatedly with a Roman seeming to be of great importance. She cannot hear their conversation from her vantage point, but they appear to know each other, and Evergreen does not seem to be in any imediate danger.
The Roman hands Evergreen a parchment, which Evergreen accepts readily. She hurries with the note and enters a nearby tent. Moments later Evergreen exits with Zena, helping an injured Gabbyfan. Behind them, a woman Phalon had never seen before emerges. The woman appears to be Roman, a peasant or slave perhaps.
Friend or foe? Something strikes Phalon as being oddly familar about her. Not as though she knew her but as if she met her once in a dream long ago. The woman turns and looks up to Phalon's hiding place on the ridge, seeming to stare directly at Phalon with narrowed eyes. Suddenly it hits Phalon. The wounded man she'd brought to Cyrene's Tavern was babbling in and out of consciencence about a girl. A girl whose description fits exactly that of this woman here.
Phalon must save those thoughts for later though. Her friends, along with the Roman woman, appear to be heading out of the camp. Phalon low crawls back to where she left Agapanthus, to follow them and join up with the others.

Gone But not Forgotten
Puella spoke, “Let’s get out of here.” The three moved quickly from the tent, Zena stopping long enough to tap a soldier on the arm. "Excuse me, that is MY sword you have." "I'm not doing this over again", she thought as Evergreen who held up the safe passage scroll to the soldier helped slide the Limasword back into place.
"All right Gabbyfan we have to run and I need to carry you over my shoulder, so hang on to my tunic. Puella, I expect not to have to worry that my back is in front of you. Evergreen, take the front, you have the scroll but I won't feel safe until I see the faces of our sentries." Evergreen went ahead, saying to the guards as they passed the gate, "Videre est credere." "Where did you get that?", Zena asked. "Oh, I read a lot in my spare time," Evergreen shrugged.
The forest was now in sight. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ gabbyfan4ever - 11:47pm May 7, 2002 ET (#88 of 330)
The Journey home
Little Gabbyfan is wondering how on earth she is going to hold on to Zena's tunic, all the way home, with Zena running. Nonetheless, the little Amazon is ecstatic to be going home to her sisters, no matter how painful each stride may be.
Earlier that evening gabbyfan had doubts about Evergreens intentions, after seeing how freely she moved about the Roman Camp, and the power she seemed to carry with the guards. However, in the end, Zena trusted her and, despite the apparent prior deception, forgave her. In turn, gabbyfan trusted Zena unconditionally, and if she said Evergreen was her sister, then she was. Girlpower, on the other hand, was another story. She could not yet trust the roman slave, and did not like having her back turned to her on the way home. Gabbyfan would be sure to use all her warrior skills to listen for an attack from behind. Yet, through these thoughts, something in the back of Gabbyfan's mind told her that the roman slave could be trusted.
The women made their way through the camp using Evergreen's "get out of jail free" card; however, they would not feel secure until they were out of the camp boundries. Once past the last of the Roman guards, the women ran for the woods, with Gabbyfan holding on for dear life. At last they reached the forests-edge, and found phalon who watched their backs until they were safely in the woods. Phalon told the woman they had much to talk about, but it would wait until they were back at the Amazon camp. As they traveled at an easier pace, Evergreen carried Gabbyfan and gave Zena a break. She no longer doubted Evergreen, and felt safe in her secure arms. Gabbyfan wondered what would happen to the Roman once they got back to camp. Would her past deceptions be forgiven? Would she have a new Amazon sister even? Only time and their Queen's judgement would tell. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ girlpower - 02:16am May 8, 2002 ET (#89 of 330) Courage is not the absence of fear..but the strength to conquer it.
Quickly Evergreen, Zena, little Gabbyfan and I fled to the woods. At the tree line, a woman, strong and confident greets us. I do not know her from the Amazon camp. She acknowledged my presence but said nothing. I could tell, by the direction we were moving the camp has been relocated. I attempt to memorize the path we are taking. Though I have made a choice to go with the Amazon’s, it would be naive of me to totally trust these women. Their tribe has proven to me that they don’t like strangers, let alone known enemies, within their camp or their confidence. Though it means a lot to me that Zena has trusted me at her back again. I can see Gabbyfan watching my every move, whenever her face turns my way. Trying to protect her sisters from me. If she only knew that I am in as much pain as she is, I couldn’t attack even if I wanted to. My strength is no match for the three women. After a while, I begin to remember the terrain. I moved ahead to Zena’s side, getting her attention without words. I pointed to my lips and then to a small clearing in the trees. She seems to understand and motions to Evergreen who sets little Gabbyfan down. Puella whispered to the four women now knelt down by her side, “There is a troop near here, smaller then the bandit camp. One of five Roman camps set up around the territory. Small bases for the incoming troops to meet up and discuss strategy with the already existing bandit troop.” Shrugging my shoulders at their glares. “After all they can’t just meet at the local tavern.” Zena looked me in the eye and realized the truth. The Senator is here to save these poor people from bandits, that the Romans have unleashed on the villages. One look at Evergreen and her theory is confirmed. Puella looked to Zena again “We can either avoid this camp, then return later or we can destroy what we can, while we are here. The decision is yours.”

Many Happy Returns
Phalon joined the group at the tree line and they melted with characteristic Amazon skill into the forest cover. Once hidden they exchanged the Amazon sign of strength, wrist armor brought together. Zena thumped Phalon on her back. "Whose horse is that? Well never mind, our newest sister can use a ride. Phalon this is Little Gabbyfan."
The four looked at the drawing Girlpower had drawn with her finger in the dirt. “We can either avoid this camp, then return later or we can destroy what we can, while we are here. The decision is yours.” Zena studied Gabbyfan intently and then chose. "Our current need is to move Gabbyfan to safety and report to our Queen. We will skirt the camp and return to the others." "No!", Gabbyfan pleaded, "I can fight, give me my staff and prop me up against a tree!" Zena reached over to feel her head and noted with concern that she was beginning to feel warm to the touch. The exertion of the escape was taking it's toll on the little warrior. "Stop your foolish talk. I will be your teacher when we get out of this and your first lesson is to be obedient to orders. We will fight only if no other way is possible, and no one is to be given undue risk." She looked across at Girlpower as she said this, once again counting her injuries. "Put Gabbyfan on the horse and for Ares sake be as quiet as you can. Evergreen, any final words?" Evergreen smiled her slow smile, "Alia iacta est." "I really should have paid more attention in second language class", Zena murmured. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Joxcenia - 11:19pm May 8, 2002 ET (#91 of 330) I Came... Meanwhile.... Back At Amazon Camp II... The Hospice...
Joxcenia worked her way through the hospice, checking on the status of each patient. Fortunately, most were expected to live, though a few were touch and go.
"Sue," a sister Amazon called out. "We need you over here."
Joxcenia watched as Lurker Sue raced toward where she was needed. Well, she turned out to be quite the little helper. Maybe she can be trusted. Maybe. It’s still way too soon to tell. Amazon code is set up so that no one is initiated into the sisterhood until she’s proven herself beyond all doubt. And helping out at a hospice isn’t enough. No, she’ll have to undergo a more rigid set of tests. Joxcenia glanced about the room, giving each warrior an admiring look. They were her sisters, and she was proud of them.
Just then, more wounded amazons were rushed through the cave opening and placed on various cots. Since each section of the hospice was set up for varying degrees of injuries, the hurt were moved to their own different areas. All in the room knew who needed attention first without being told, and several caregivers rushed to help them as soon as the handlers laid them down.
Where are the others? Joxcenia wondered. Are we winning the battle, or will there be a retreat? It might be a good idea to regroup and come up with a different strategy. She shook her head to clear the cobwebs. I sure hope the others were able to stop Puella before she reached the Roman camp. Not that it matters too much, since the camp's been moved elsewhere. No way she can lead the Romans back to us now. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ EvergreenLM - 01:42am May 9, 2002 ET (#92 of 330) "To Conquer Others is to Know Power...to Conquer Yourself is to Know the Way"
To Pace and Ponder
"Alea Iacta Est", The Die is Cast...
Evergreen had been walking alone on the edge of the forest. She often retreated when such decisions as the life and death of her friends hang in the balance. Evergreen had to smile when she overheard Zena quoting Julius Caesar. Such a comment was spoken with pride in Rome when the citizens reveled in his decision to cross the Rubicon and never look back. Justinian was Evergreen's Rubicon. The slave girl misread Evergreen's face when she told the others that the Senator had come to be the protector of the villagers. Justinian protects no one. Evergreen knew that all too well. This slave girl... Evergreen noticed an insignia that adorned the cuff on her upper left arm. It was familiar, but yet Evergreen still could not recall its meaning.
Evergreen walked slowly back to where the others were discussing to attack the nearest Roman camp or to press on to meet up with the Queen in the Amazon stronghold. Evergreen doubted that Little Gabby would have the strength to ride another hour let alone take part in an assault. She would try to convince them to rest for the night. Darkness was near and the woods were not entirely familiar. They in the darkness of night could stumble right into another pocket of Romans. Besides, Evergreen would like to sit with her friends and relish the company of those she cared for, although she was not sure they would fully trust this fact.
The pine needles snap under Evergreen's boots. Zena stands with sword drawn.
"Its only me my friend. Put your sword away. You will have plenty of time come tomorrow to put it to its use. I have been thinking and I would like you to hear me out."
"We have pushed hard, Little Gabby is still recovering from her wound, and I am not sure how safe it will be for us to travel after dark. Lets stay for the night."
"You there",pointing to the stranger among them, "gather wood for the fire while I attend to the horses. Zena, you help Little Gabby. Get my blanket from the back of my horse, make her comfortable, and dress her wound."
Evergreen sees the look of conflicting loyalties in Little Dog's face.
"Go on dog...you take care of Gabby too."
Without a word of protest, it is agreed that they will say until morning.
Night falls, the fire crackles, and all but one figure sleeps. The moon begins to rise casting etheral shadows on the small group sleeping on the ground. Evergreen walks among them looking at the sleeping faces of Zena and Little Gabby. She worries what fate awaits them with the rising sun and could not bear to think of any one of them gone. The slave girl sleeps a troubled sleep. Who really is this woman that we have brought in among us?
Evergreen walks to the edge of the forest. The wind is soflty blowing, the scent of pine is strong. Little Dog appears from the shadows. Evergreen kneels and scratches his soft fur. He turns his head in the pleasure of the moment. An owl calls from the trees. There is a rustling coming from within the forest floor. Little Dog freezes.
Evergreen remembers Xena's teachings,"Listen not just to the sounds, but what's behind the sounds".
"Quite, boy",whispers Evergreen. In and out of the shadows are figures crouching low, figures heading in the exact direction of the others that are sleeping and not knowing what approaches. Evergreen draws her sais from her boot and silently circles to the back of the two invading the night...

"Act Don't React
Queen Saxy's instructions rang in my ears" It is time for us to Act rather than react.. we will take back the element of surprise." The words comforted me and emboldened me as I found myself in the woods alone, looking for a treeline that would lead to the Roman encampment.
I had left camp like an over eager child, I had run off without even taking time to gather supplies.. a move that my stomach was now regretting.
There would be time later for strong mead and good food, but for now I had to get beyond the treeline and into the Roman encampment. I could not believe my eyes there were my sisters coming out of my targets tent.
Evergreen,Zena and Little Gabbyfan were together . .. and that Roman slave scum was with them.
I was momentarily overtaken by confusion, it was too much to take in. First the guard let them pass because of a parchment. Secondly, they seemed to be willingly letting this slave go with them .
As I shook my head in an attempt to clear my thoughts I noticed a somewhat familiar emblem on the Roman slave.. but where did I know it from and what was She doing with it?
As I heard the distinctive sound of a Roman boot I snapped out of my train of thought. It was time to do what I had come to do.
As I crept towards Justinain's tent there were Roman Soldier's everywhere. I guess the site of Amazons in their camp earlier made the decide to post Sentries at every tent. There was no way now that a mere diversion was going to get me where I needed to be...
I straightened up, took a deep breath in an attempt to summon my courage. I looked down and myself and knew what I had to do. I first kicked off my boots.. I hated to lose them they had cost me 50 dinars. I then tore my garments, as to reveal my legs, shoulders and of course my bust. I then uncovered my head and shook loose my auburn hair. I even pinched my cheeks for extra coloring and wetted my lips.
I approached the sentry at Justinain's tent like I belonged there. He acknowledged my presence with a disapproving growl"You must be His entertainment for the evening!" I nodded. The sentry looked me over a time or two and with a "You'll do I guess" gave me entrance to the tent. I couldn't help but smirk as I thought" I'll be his entertainment alright!" There laid Justinain in all his Roman finery. He was in deed expecting to be pleasured, but obviously not by me.
He asked" Where is my usual girl? I said ", I do not know sir I can leave if you like."
Justinain shook his head and then motioned for me to come nearer.
He pulled me next to him and I wanted to vomit as his Filthy Roman hands were all over me. He smiled as I squirmed. He said Hmmm.. you'll do just fine I think I can get a few hours out of you!
He yelled to the guard,"Your relieved of your duties ,come back at dawn." My plan was working I now had a few hours... I turned to him and said coyly,"Aren't you going to have me checked for weapons?" Justinain grinned and said, " I may be a senator but this is a duty I want to perform. I will strip search you myself."
I said, "Go ahead." and held out my arms as if in surrender, but when he drew close, I grabbed his arm and spun him into me. I held against his throat a little dagger that I kept in my bosom. I whispered "If you don't fight me I won't have to kill you".
I quickly tied his hands and gagged his mouth. I needed away to get him out of the camp. I spotted a fly swatter made from a horse's tail, I used that as a makeshift wig. I used the cloth from the bed as a kerchief to put over his head and the canopy from the bed as a dress.
He could pass as an old woman from a distance. Before exiting the tent I did as Saxy had instructed. I left a note that said:
" We have your beloved Senator." signed Pompeii.
I waited til the changing of the guards to make our escape from the tent and the Roman encampment.

"Act Don't React continued
Once past the treeline I felt relief. We now had an advantage. Ceasar would think that Pompeii had the Roman Senator kidnapped and if things were going right Pompeii would be thinking this Roman build up of troops was in order to attack him.
This kidnapping would give us the time to regroup and attack if necessary. I just had to get him to camp without getting caught. I pushed him ahead of me as to keep an eye on him. I was filled with emotion a we taried on.. I didn't realize for a moment that he purposely stepped loudly onto a dry twig until I heard it snap. Anyone around us had to be sure to have heard it....

The crack of the twig was like an explosion. It was there and then gone so that one might wonder if it had ever actually been heard. Zena had been dreaming....running...on a long, wide beach. Chased by....."CRACK". She woke and caught her breath, soaked in sweat from the nightmare. In the inky darkness she lay frozen in place, waiting for a second sound or movement. Her fingers were wrapped tightly on her dagger as always, and she did her best to breathe in small soundless breaths. As the seconds ticked by she took stock of the position of her sisters and reached out with her spirit to the reason behind the initial sound. And then she sensed movement. Creeping silently over the grass came................. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ gabbyfan4ever - 03:28am May 11, 2002 ET (#96 of 330)
Little Gabbyfan had been in and out of an uneasy sleep. She is aware that Evergreen is awake, and regards her with growing affection close to that of a child to her mother, and like she already has towards Zena. Gabbyfan's fever had returned on their trip back to the Amazon camp, and she thinks with bitterness that she had been reason they had not attacked the Roman camp, and had stopped for the night. However, she would not disobey orders, and knew in the back of her mind that her weakness might have gotten them killed.
Just as Gabbyfan eased back into sleep through the chills her fever had given her, a twig snapped in the woods. The sound was loud enough to have woken Mount Olympus, and it awoke gabbyfan with a start. She sat up and looked to Zena or Evergreen for confirmation on the cause of the sound. Just then a hand closed around Gabbyfan's mouth and a fear gripped her heart... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ girlpower - 04:37am May 11, 2002 ET (#97 of 330) Courage is not the absence of fear..but the strength to conquer it.
Just then a hand closed around little Gabbyfan’s mouth and a fear gripped her heart. Whispering, Puella or Girlpower said, “Quiet now little Gabbyfan, everyone else heard it too and are looking for the cause.” Puella then removed her hand from Gabbyfan’s mouth. One look to Zena and I was given my orders. Protect the little one. I stood in defense, as Zena and Phalon searched for Evergreen, and the cause of the sound we were all acutely aware of. In seconds Evergreen was back in the camp and she was extinguishing the campfire. “Where is Zena?” Evergreen asked. “Looking for you,” I answered. With that we stood on each end of the camp. Puella, crouched to the south, I see two forms in the shadows. It seems they are too close together to be Zena and Phalon. Obviously one is a hostage. I took Gabbyfan’s staff and waited till they came near. As soon as the two were within reach, Puella used the staff to knock the dagger that held the hostage, out of the aggressors grip, then sweeping the staff towards the legs. Within moments the two were on the ground wrestling for their lives. As Puella rolled on top of the assailant she recognized her face. She is xwpfan, the one who stabbed me at the Roman camp…
------------------------------------------------------------------------ phalon - 06:51pm May 11, 2002 ET (#98 of 330)
The Evil Amongst Us
Phalon lay awake, her mind racing over the evenings events.
Earlier in the evening, she had cleansed little Gabbyfan's wounds with a tea she had steeped made from the leaves of Glechoma hederacea which she found growing readily around the makeshift camp. The wash would act as an antiseptic and healing agent. Little Gabbyfan would heal nicely and should start feeling well enough to travel by morning.
As the tea was brewing over the fire, Phalon paid careful attention to which direction the leaves took in the water. Glechoma hederacea was a medicinal herb, but was used by mystics and seers as well. It was said to have the ability to detect an evil presence. Phalon had seen it done a few times, and there was something about Puella that made Phalon uneasy. She had intended to read the leaves to put her mind at rest. It did anything but that. Evil was here, she had felt it, and now the leaves confirmed it.
The obvious suspect was Puella. A branded Roman slave. The enemy. The similarities to the woman in the mindless rantings of the wounded man back at Cyrene's. An outsider attempting to fit in. Where these attempts at newfound loyalties feigned?
Gabbyfan, full of youthful eagerness and innocence. Did an old soul lay beneath the appearance of youth?
Zena. Her loyalty and friendship to Evergreen was beyond reproach. Loyal, courageous and intelligent. All qualities that she possessed in abundance. Could a deeply hidden evil be there as well?
Evergreen. The Wise One. Kind and calming. The daughter of a Roman Senator, an evil man. Evil breeds evil? Phalon doubted it in this case. But really, what shadows of the soul lurked within her?
Phalon's thoughts were abruptly interrupted by the sharp snapping of a twig. Phalon sprung from her bedroll. She heard the others doing the same. She would have to think about this later. Danger of another kind was present now. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ zena - 08:31pm May 11, 2002 ET (#99 of 330) "Agere Sequitur Esse"
Liar, Liar!
With Little Gabbyfan in Puella's care Zena felt free to creep from her bed roll and toward the tree line. Phalon took her signal and they raced out and around in a wide circle, soundless in the damp pre dawn air. Nothing. Looking back Zena saw the campfire being put out and her heart and breath seemed to stop with the extinguished light. Phalon saw it too and they covered the ground twice as fast as they had going out. As they closed in they saw that in front of the embers Puella had knocked down one assailant and a second was crawling quickly away. Evergreen stood in front of Gabbyfan to protect her so Zena used the fallen staff to spear the purple cloak of the crawling form and stake him to the ground. With her boot she turned him over. "Well, well. Senator Justinian. Are you breaking your Roman oath to set us free by murdering us in our sleep?" Never taking her eyes from the cowering form Zena called back to Evergreen, "Evergreen, I need you here." Evergreen came quickly to Zena's side sidestepping the scuffle with the other attacker which Phalon now had under control. Her eyes widened and quickly narrowed as Zena whispered in passing, "He's all yours."
All Amazons are trained as leaders as well as warriors. The Queen and her second have supreme authority but each warrior can take command and relinquish it as the situation requires. Phalon was sorting out the wrestling match, Evergreen was handling her family problems and so Zena returned to the littlest warrior who sat still as she had been ordered.
Little Gabbyfan's teeth were chattering as the chills from her fever overtook her. Smiling, Zena said, "You did well but you must control the noise your teeth are making." Gabbyfan looked up chagrined and then realized Zena was joking to relieve the tension. "I...I...I...I'll...ddddo....bbbetter...nnnext....ttime," Gabbyfan offered as Zena wrapped her securely in her own blanket. "You are doing just fine little warrior. Not to worry." "Zena?", Gabbyfan whispered. "Yes?", Zena stopped packing her saddlebag. "I think I'm going to be sick," Gabbyfan whimpered. "Well then, in the bushes, not in my bedroll", Zena chuckled as she helped Gabby fan up.

------------------------------------------------------------------------ phalon - 12:46am May 12, 2002 ET (#100 of 330)
Phalon watched Puella across the clearing attack one of the intruders. As Phalon raced across the camp to the scuffle, she saw Zena coming in from the other direction. Zena got there just ahead of Phalon and had stopped the second intruder from escaping.
Phalon turned her attention to Puella and the intruder which she had now had straddled and pinned to the ground. Dagger held high, Puella was about to strike the point home. One quick glance at the intruder, sent a bolt of panic through Phalon. The auburn hair strewn across her face in only the light of the glowing fire embers was still unmistakable. "STOP!!!!", Phalon screamed.
Puella's hand hesitated. "STOP!!!", again Phalon screamed. "Get off her now, woman. She is a friend", Phalon said through clenched teeth, as she pushed Puella off the intruder.
"Xwpfan!" Phalon extended her hand and helped the prone Xwpfan to her feet.
Phalon turned again to Puella, who now lay sprawled in the dirt where Phalon had pushed her. She glared at Puella through narrowed eyes. "I...I didn't know", Puella stuttered, obviously shaken. Her hand went to her throat, fumbling, as if reaching for something out of an old nervous habit. Something that wasn't there anymore. She quickly withdrew it. "I didn't know", she simply stated, recovering her confidence and glaring back at Phalon.
Phalon extended her hand again. This time helping Puella to her feet. Both women stood for a moment, hands locked, staring into each others eyes, trying to see what secrets lay hidden inside. Both women walked away, in separate directions, only sure of the other's malice. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ girlpower - 02:43am May 12, 2002 ET (#101 of 330) Courage is not the absence of fear..but the strength to conquer it.
Something is lost
Puella stared at Xwpfan with eyes of fury, as she straddled her. You should have killed me when you had the chance. Seeing the dagger that inflicted my wound, only a short time ago, I reached for it. You will see how it feels first hand. Raising my arm up, dagger in hand, ready to strike a painful blow, I hear Phalon. “STOP!!! Get off her now, woman. She is a friend.” Phalon said through clenched teeth, as she pushed Puella off Xwpfan. Looking up at Phalon all I could feel was rage. This woman tried to kill me and now Phalon has thwarted my revenge. What kind of society doesn’t allow revenge? I have learned that the only way others will treat you with respect is to demand it, even if that means they must fear you. I have lost that opportunity, and am not sure how to react. I glare at the two women as Phalon extends her arm to Xwpfan. Phalon then turns to me, I said the only thing I could, “I…I didn’t know.” Trying to decide what to do next I reach for my necklace. The one thing I can say is mine and mine alone. It wasn’t there for my hand to grasp. Panic spread through me. Why should a possession effect me this way? I don’t even know where I got it, but I know every little groove it contains. My fingers have rubbed the stone with its emblem of Tauros the bull, many times. So much that the grooves have been worn away in places. I have heard many stories about what the emblem represented, my favorite was Zeus fell in love with Europa, daughter of the king of Tyre. To attract her, Zeus transformed himself into the shape of a beautiful white bull. Europa was so taken away with the beauty and gentility of the white bull that she climbed onto it’s back. Zeus then carried Europa, away. Now, it is gone. I must find it. One of these women may have it and I will get it back. I notice Phalon looking at me, I hope she mistakes my panic for regret at almost killing Xwpfan. Looking into her eyes, I again said, “I didn’t know.” Phalon then extended her arm to me. I took it and allowed her to help me up. Our grips seemed to tighten as we looked at one another. Who is this Phalon and what interest does she have in me? When our hands released I walked away, towards the areas I had been before all the excitement. Maybe it just fell off?

WHERE IS LUCYSTAR?
Lucystar, having let the Roman slave escape, had risen and started off in the direction of the Amazon camp. After a few steps, she falters. Holding her hands to her hand she carefully makes her way to a tree and leaning against it, slips to the ground. The ache in her head now a roar, blurs her vision. She's puzzled at why a glancing blow, one she was sure she had deflected should hurt so bad. "Hades, I've been hit harder sparing with Saxy." Putting her fingers to her temple she feels a bump rising. "Ah, that explains it." Lucystar now realizes that the blow had hit the most vulernable spot. "DAMN, just a bit higher or lower and this would only be a headache." She knows the swelling at this particular spot is going to knock her out. With no time to lose, she pulls herself behind the tree and attempts to camouflage herself as best she can. Her last thoughts are of her friends. "I hope they're safe. If anything happens to Queen Saxy or one of my sisters, I'll never forgive myself." With that she sinks into darkness. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ saxgoddess25 - 04:17am May 12, 2002 ET (#103 of 330) I have the soul of a bard and the heart of a warrior. Meanwhile, back at the *new* Amazon camp, part 4
After she had given xwpfan all the direction she needed, Saxy ran through the trees to the location she'd picked to for the new amazon camp. As she approached the site she was challenged by three sets of sentries. Very nice. At least one thing is going my way.
The last few days had been a disaster. A quick and simple mission of defeating a group of brigands had turn into an all-out war with Rome and she was soon going to be vastly outnumbered. She remembered a phrase she had once been told by her grandmother, a battle hardened old amazon with a wicked temper and a soft spot for her granddaughter. "Only the foolish or the vain will stay to fight a superior force, and the Gods do not use kindly the foolish or the vain." Saxy liked to think that she was neither. Somehow she was going to have to take out the Romans while they were still a small force. Perhaps if her sisters all managed to get back to the same spot for 5 minutes, they could make plans.
Finally within the camp, Saxy soon found herself in the makeshift infirmary. Spotting Joxcenia speaking with a dark haired young Amazon, Saxy wandered over to them. They both noticed her presence at the same time and hushed respectfully. "My Queen."
Saxy nodded. "Joxcenia, where is everyone? I haven't seen hide nor hair of evergreen or zena, and where's lucystar?"
"I haven't seen them since the camp moved. Perhaps someone else has."
Saxy's brows drew down as she frowned darkly. She didn't even notice when Joxcenia continued to inform her of the status of the new camp. A feeling that all was not right with her second was nagging at her. She should have been back by now. Ah Hades, I shouldn't have told her to let that slave get away. Gods damn me, I'll be the death of her yet. Making a snap decision, Saxy interrupted Joxcenia and told her to keep the camp in order. "If Zena and the others come back before I do, make sure they stay here. I'm going to go find Lucystar."
Without even waiting for Jox to reply, Saxy was sprinting back out of camp toward the last known location of her friend. Let her be alright, please Artemis, let her be alright.

LUCYSTAR (Many candlemarks later)
Slowly one eye opens, then the other. Lucystar blinks a couple of times and looks around, taking in her surroundings. Carefully she touches her temple and finds that the bump is gone. "Thank the gods. Now get yourself up and find your friends." Brushing the leaves off her clothes and out of her hair, she surveys the area and picks her direction. "Now to find our camp. I wonder if they've moved it already?" Lucystar is sure her friends are wondering where she's been. "I better be ready for a tongue lashing from Saxy for not being more careful. Maybe I can pick up some information on the way back that will make her forget how long I've been missing?" Concern crosses her face as it occurs to her that she's not sure how long she's been gone. "Maybe they think I'm dead?" Lucystar thinks about it for a minute. "The info better be good if I'm going to get Saxy to go easy on me. She hates to worry, the big mushball." Lucystar chuckles at that because she knows the Queen would not like that fact be known and Lucystar seems to be the only one to get away with calling her that. "Maybe I can plead injury? Yeah, Right."
Lucystar has traveled only a couple of candlemarks when she hears men's voices. Creeping up through the brush she sees a Roman camp, but not the one she had pulled her pranks in. This one is obviously an outpost and from the looks of the stockpile of food and weapons, it's a camp for hundreds of soldiers. Getting as close as possible, she hears the guards as they talk. "How soon will the others get here?" "They'll get here, when they get here. Don't forget, there are four other outposts just like ours waiting for the rest of the army to arrive and we're the furthest out." He glances around the camp "Just make sure everyone here is ready to move at a moments notice."
Lucystar cautiously moves away from the camp and takes off toward where she thinks the Amazon camp is located. "I've got to find Saxy and fast. Damn that slave for taking the horse". She half-runs another candlemark, her head still a little sore, when she enters a clearing. Coming to a halt, a big smile crosses her face. There in the clearing are about 15 Roman horses grazing. "I bet that's part of the bunch Saxy chased off. I've got my info and now a bonus to take back to camp." Thinking this way those who don't have a horse can now have one and it may also give them some fresh horses if needed. Walking slowly among them, talking gently in a low voice, she gathers up the ropes still tied to their halters. At the last horse, with ropes in hand, she jumps aboard and eases them into a walk, then trot as she heads towards camp with her prizes. Quite pleased with herself, she can't help but smile, then laugh "This should save me from a lecture and a butt kicking."
The dark swallows them up as they move away. But a voice floats eeriely through the trees. "Muahahaha" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ saxgoddess25 - 04:30am May 12, 2002 ET (#105 of 330) I have the soul of a bard and the heart of a warrior. We've got to stop meeting like this
Saxy ran for what seemed like an eternity. Her lungs felt like they were going to explode. Damn I'm out of shape. Far too many nights spent in good mead and good company.
Finally she stopped and looked around her. In her haste to find her friend she had managed to get herself lost. Oh this is just fine and dandy. The Amazon Queen gets lost in the forest. Maybe I should just retire. Suddenly she hears the sound of several horses. Quickly scaling the nearest tree (thank the Gods it had several climbable branches) she saw a mass of horses moving toward her. The strangest thing was that only one was ridden...but these were Roman horses. As the rider passed beneath, Saxy dropped out of the trees, knocking the rider to the ground.
Saxy rolled the struggling figure over and looked into the rather stunned face of her second.

IT'S JUST NOT MY DAY
Lucystar and her herd are making good time. "Now, I hope the gods I'm headed in the right direction. I can only guess where Saxy moved camp." Knowing her Queen like she does, she knows the camp has been moved. "I only hope my sense of direction and intuition will get me there."
Suddenly, a slight noise above her draws her attention upward. Too Late. Lucystar is knocked from the horse and goes sprawling on the ground. Someone is sitting on her back. She stuggles attempting to get away, but strong hands hold her and then she's rolled over. Trying to bring her fists up ready for a fight, she finds herself staring into the eyes of her Queen.
Lucystar suddenly goes still, then a big smile emerges and she grabs Saxy in a big hug. "Boy am I glad to see you." Letting go quickly, she cocks her head and winks. "Missed me, huh. Ya big mushball." "Now, get off me." Saxy looks at her friend, glares at the mushball comment and then grins. With that, they both break out laughing as the Queen gets up and extends an arm to help her second get up of the ground.
Looking at the horses, then back at Lucystar, "Been busy, haven't you. You've got some explaining to do. And it better be good!" Taking a bg breath, Lucystar begins her tale of woe, praying to any god that's listening that it will save her from, only the gods know what. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ saxgoddess25 - 06:28am May 12, 2002 ET (#107 of 330) I have the soul of a bard and the heart of a warrior. My vengeance is swift and complete.
Saxy could barely contain her joy at seeing her friend (mostly) unharmed. When Lucystar hugged her, Saxy didn't want to let go. She let the mushball comment pass unremarked, aside from a glare that made them both laugh and then pulled LS to her feet.
Saxy eyed the Roman horses, then turned back to her second. "Been busy, haven't you? You've got some explaining to do, and it better be good!"
Lucystar told her about the blow to her head and how she'd been knocked unconcious for Gods knew how long. Saxy growled to herself. When I catch that slave girl again she'll wish she'd never been born. The news that LS had learned from the Romans jerked Saxy's attention fully back from her nefarious plans for Puella. "Gods," was all she could think to whisper. "We've got to get back to the camp now. You can tell me more on the way."
They split the horses' leads between the two of them and each woman mounted a horse, riding as fast as was possible. Saxy turned back to Lucystar as she rode. "Joxcenia has an infirmary set up at the new camp. I want you to have someone look at your head," she held up a hand to forestall her second's argument, "and then I think you and I should have a nice long talk about what is to come."

Plans and designs
My attention had been drawn by the snap of the twig, I never saw or anticipated the blow that fell me. I was forced to the ground, I struggled to gain an advantage against my attacker.
We wrestled back and forth, my attacker was strong and agile much like an Amazon.
My attacker was getting the better of me,I found myself on my back up. I felt feverishly for my dagger. I couldn't find it. Where was it and who was attacking me?
As I looked up I found the answer to both questions. Puella!! Not only was she attacking me but she had my dagger and had it raised against me to strike a fatal blow!! Filled with venomous hate I wrapped my hands around Puellas throat and squeezed for all I was worth.
One of us was not going to walk away this time.
Puella was gasping for air but still determined to stab me, when a voice growled "Stop!! Get off her Now,woman. She is a friend.
Reluctantly, she lowered the dagger. My hands still wrapped around her throat I wasn't ready to let go... until I felt a stone.. and a necklace around her neck.
Sensing it could be important to finding out who this woman really was in one swift move I pulled the necklace from her neck.. she didn't notice me take it , but she obviously seemed aware of it's absence.
As Phalon helped me to my feet I slipped the necklace into Phalon's pouch for safe keeping.
As I stand to my feet I notice that they had kept Justinain from escaping . Thank the Gods!!!
Phalon then helped Puella to her feet, you could tell there was no love lost there, there eyes locking streaming pure hate and mistrust.
Evergreen and little Gabbyfan were intently staring at me. I knew they were awaiting for my explanation of Justinain's presence. I regaled the group with my story of how I got into Justinain's tent and our plan to kidnap Justinain.
Evergreen roared with laughter" You seduced my Father and then you kidnapped him?! Fantastic idea! Wonderful Plan!! I am surprised he hasn't popped a blood vessel yet! My father, the Great Roman senator amongst Amazons- this is Too much!
I struggled for words "Father?? Justianian is YOUR Father?!!! I wondered aloud, "Did Queen Saxy know?"
Evergreen shrugged her shoulders.
This information now complicated my plans. There was no way I could send Evergreen on the mission like I had planned...
I looked at our little group and said , I will need a volunteer for what could be a simple assignment or a very deadly assignment. I need someone to deliver Justinain's signet ring to Caesar as proof that he has been kidnapped... by Pompeii.
I smiled, there was Evergreen the first to step forward. I took her by the arm and I told her "I knew I could depend on you Evergreen to volunteer, but I have other plans for you."
Puella stepped forward, "I'll go." she snarled.
Given our previous history her offer took me off guard. My mind immediately thought " yeah so you can betray us all and have us killed."
Evergreen spoke on Puellas behalf, "Truthfully, Puella is the perfect candidate, being a Roman slave she might be able to get into the camp and maybe even get access to Caesar himself without raising any suspicion."
Everyone nodded in agreement.
Although I had some reservations, I gave her Justianian's signet ring and a parchment with Pompeii's forged signature to give to Caesar. I gave her some further instructions and told her to meet up with us in two moons by the treeline.
After she left the camp, "I told them that I would be taking similar misinformation to Pompeii. Essentially we needed Pompeii to believe that Caesar was amassing troops to attack him."
"Evergreen, have your father sign some offical papers granting large sums of money and arms to Ceasar for his future campaigns against Pompeii and make sure he signs it"! Evergreen nodded, "right away!"
Evergreen dissappeared into the darkness to get her father to write the necssary papers.
I turned to the others and told them "Queen saxy has plans and designs for these Roman scum and she needs everyone of us. So what I need you to do, especially you little Gabbyfan is to eat and to rest. Phalon I need you to Guard Justinain, he is the key to our advantage.. for right now...
At Tommorrow morning's first light, I need you join up with Queen Saxy and Lucystar. Tell them our plan is under way but that we will need a contingency plan. Puella may betray us and we need to be prepared for that possibilty.
Queen Saxy has a plan under way and she needs everybody ready to fight so be careful!
I will see you in two moons at the latest. Be safe..take care of one another. Tell Queen Saxy I need to have a private conference with her when I return from Pompeii's encampment...
