Mia, I think "Wow. Just wow," sums it up well. You too, Gams! A pistol, for sure. And what I love about her first hike up The Trail was that is was with no fancy gear. Clearly, from her quote about it being "a lark", she admits that she underestimated how hard it would be. But still, what I admire about her simple gear is that she just jumped in. I think that's what keeps many of us from beginning tasks - we think we need to wait till we have the right gear, or need to be 10 pounds lighter, or aren't smart enough, or, etc, etc, etc.

Ohhh, I wanna be her. Or this woman: www.squidoo.com/amazing-mountain-womenOf course I have to make one small correction. The article refers to American woman suffragists as suffragettes. They weren't. The suffragettes were an English group committed to obtaining the franchise by any means needed. If that meant throwing themselves under the King's horse on Derby day, one did. If it meant chaining oneself to the fence outside Buck house, they did. And, once arrested, they refused to eat. The suffragette core was Mrs. Pankhurst and her daughters. Heroes in their own right, but, honestly, I'd rather climb a mountain than be trampled to death by a horse. pedantically, scamp

Great story, Spock. Some of the most valuable lessons learned in school don't come from a textbook, and are taught by the most memorable teachers.

I read that story last week, Spock....or tried to, but was one of those times my computer shut down, and I never went back to try again. Thanks for posting the link.
Yay to the young man for handling the situation with maturity, and then reaching into his own pocket.
Shame, shame, shame on the woman who clearly could use a refresher course in the childhood lesson that you do not take what is not yours.

Yeah. I edited several times, and I could not get it to work. The trick I used before the upgrade no longer works. You'll just have to copy/paste to get to the page. It's the commas that break up the link and prevents it from working.

I came across this lady's story today, and admired her not so much for the stunt she is known for, but for her determination to change her situation. She took a great risk while seeking fame and fortune. I admire anyone who is willing to risk it all (without hurting anyone else) in order to chase their dream. I wonder how the cat felt about their adventure? www.niagarafallsinformation.com/daredevils/annietaylor.html

I like this topic so much I have stolen the idea (and some of the posts! ) for my new forum. Some of the kids in there need the inspiration.

Spock, there's something you might want to mention to the kids on your board - Nickelodeon's "TeenNick Halo Awards" is coming up. I've sat with the girls for the past few years to watch this program, and more than once I've gotten choked up or had tears in my eyes seeing inspiring stories of teens, some of the obstacles they've overcome, and what they've accomplished. I think I've even mentioned it in this thread once or twice. The show is all about honoring young people who have reached out in their communities and beyond to help others. It airs Sunday, November 17th at 8pm (Eastern time). www.teennick.com/shows/halo-awards

Ida B. Wells-Barnett was a leader in the civil & women's rights movements who constantly called out American media for downplaying white-on-black violence throughout the late 1800s. As a journalist, Wells-Barnett documented each & every lynching with graphic details and headlines, helping to expose the country to the reality and brutality of racism. www.pbs.org/wnet/jimcrow/stories_people_wells.html and Wikipedia

I enjoy the Google doodles that draw attention to interesting people. Very often I had not heard of their accomplishments before clicking the doogle. Such was the case this week when Google saluted computer pioneer Grace Hopper, a truly remarkable woman. And I love this quote from her, delivered during a commencement address, "A ship in port is safe, but that is not what ships are built for." newsfeed.time.com/2013/12/09/google-doodle-honors-grace-hopper-early-computer-scientist/

I got one of her "nano seconds" when I attended one of her lectures at the US Naval Academy while I was teaching there. And that quote isn't exactly accurate; ask all those on the ships caught in port at Pearl Harbor ...
