Cleaning out stuff from our flooded basement, buried in one of the boxes was a copy of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours....in album form, (I don't know if it was Hubs' or mine; who didn't own a copy of this back in the day?). I started thinking about stuff that was once so common, everybody had one; items used everyday that you just don't see anymore - or things you did, saw, or heard that were once commonplace, but now have faded into 'What Once Was' things.
Vinyl albums, of course.
Camera flash bulbs.....
...and seeing family memories projected on a screen in the form of slide shows.

Oh! Do you ever sit down to watch them, Vox? I bet that'd be a fun trip, (and probably quite amusing in some parts) down memory lane.
How about Drive-In movie theaters? There are only handfuls of them left here in the States, I believe. Did you have them in England?

.......... items used everyday that you just don't see anymore - ...................... Vinyl albums, of course. There's "another" way of playing music? Sheesh I still have the old turntable with a large collection of vinal records, still the bestest way to listen to music in my humble opinion ................. not that I'm still living in the past mind you. And Drive in theaters, had two of them here locally, both long gone now unfortunately, ahhhhh great memories of old Horror/Sci-Fi double features ..... "The Creature Walks Among Us" "Tarantula" "Rodan" "Monster on the Campus" etc.etc. those were the days.

I'm with you, kat, on both counts - lps and drive-ins. Throw-backs we are, and I'm glad of it.
Here's one - tinfoil tv dinner trays. Microwaves have made them obsolete. Singer Blake Shelton needed a tv dinner to represent his sudden singlehood in the music video for "Goodbye Time". They looked high and low for a tv dinner in a metal tray, but couldn't find one. So the crew fabricated a tinfoil tray, and put foil over the top.

It's been quite some years since I saw any of the old cine films Phalon, I believe my Mum still has them, as my Dad sadly is no longer with us!
Kat, MG stillhas loads of LP's and we still use the turntable, and you are right, there is nothing like listening to vinyl (complete with the scratches and hissing) Lol.
Un fortunately we do not have 'drive-in' movie theatres over hear Phalon, that's one thing I would have loved to do, go and watch movies there! is it really like 'Happy Days'?

Along the same lines as tinfoil T.V. dinners, remember Jiffy Pop Popcorn? I used to love watching the foil puff up, shaped like a side-show magician's turban.
And tin-foil on T.V. antennas to make the reception come in better.
Vox, drive-ins were pretty much like depicted on "Happy Days" or in the movie "Grease". When I was little, our family all piled in the car, and went to the drive-in. By the time I was in high-school, drive-ins were a rarity, but there was still one a couple of miles from us, and my friends and I used to go quite frequently. Those were the "Happy Days"; no further description needed. Sigh, and swoon. I wonder what ever happened to Dave? Great kisser, but how far does that take you in life?

Well, if you're a good b*tt-kisser, Gams, it can take you pretty far. But I know that's not what you meant. Ours was the Oak Hills Drive-In, on the east side of town. That's where I first saw "True Grit". I remember that when Glen Campbell as "Mr. LaBoef" was killed, I cried and said, "Now there'll be no more 'Glen Campbell Show'," only to be reassured by my big sis that Glen's on-screen blood was only ketchup. Later, the Oak Hills slid into showing stewardess movies and other less savory drive-in fare. In my high school days, I saw many slasher double-features there, including "Friday The 13th", "My Bloody Valentine", and "Prom Night". We used to arrive in a friend's ancient sedan, with several buddies in the trunk, just like on "Happy Days". I think I've told this story here before, but here we go again. One night, 2 friends and I were in my friend's big sister's truck, watching a slasher movie. While we were huddled together, scared, my friend's other sister, who worked at the drive-in concession stand, crept into the bed of the truck, reached through the sliding window, and grabbed us, snarling, right at a scary moment in the movie. We screamed like banshees, as you can imagine. And my friend's sister nearly fell out of the truck, laughing. They tore down the Oak Hills when I was in college. But before they did, we went out and took pictures by the old marquee, and each took a little piece of the pavement. *sigh* There's a convenience store there now, and the hospital sits in the back of the lot. There are still some active drive-ins scattered across the USA. Here's a cool website in their honor: www.driveintheater.com/index.htmI'd like to go visit some of these.

Cool beans, Siren. I had to check out Michigan, and found there is still a drive-in not to far from where I grew up, although the one we used to go to in high-school is long gone. My Bloody Valentine! That was one of the movies my friends and I saw at the drive in....it was creepy driving home on the back roads in Dad's Suburban, but nothing to so scary as the experience you and your friend had in the truck! LMAO.
I also found there's one not too far from here....maybe about a 45 minute drive. Hubs and I should take the girls sometime.....or maybe Hubs and I should leave the girls home, and go ourselves sometime.
And then there was this one. Oh, the irony.

OMG....am I really so old that I remember and have experianced all of the things you guys are talking about? Including the TV dinners in foil trays. *sigh
Anyone remember weeble wobbles?

Post by Phalon on Sept 29, 2008 4:21:16 GMT -6
Yes, you are that old. HA!
And yes, Weebles. Weebles wobble, but they don't fall down. Egg-shaped, and I think Humpty Dumpty could have learned a lesson or two from his friendly neighborhood Weeble if he had been paying attention.
How about Slinkies? I know they still make them, but I think they're plastic now; when I was a kid, they were metal. Hours of entertainment playing with what is basically a glorified spring. Slinkies were invented in 1945 - and who could forget the Slinky Song? Come on, sing along....
"What walks down stairs, alone or in pairs, And makes a slinkity sound? A spring, a spring, a marvelous thing, Everyone knows it’s Slinky… It's Slinky, it's Slinky, for fun it's a wonderful toy It's Slinky, it's Slinky, it's fun for a girl and a boy."

Ok. Swords at dawn. Can it be dawn tomorrow; I'm running a little late today. I'll bring my Luke Skywalker Light Saber....from the original movie, which was made light years ago.
After Swords at Dawn, we can play Cowboys and Indians....no, no - too politically incorrect for today's times. Cops and Robbers? I suppose that is outdated too. What run-around-outside good guys vs. bad guys games do kids play now-a-days? I know, I know!
Main Street vs. Wall Street.

LMAO......I get to be the poor penniless bastard that lost his house, because I thought a 300,000 dollar house was better than the 100,000 one I could afford, and you get to be the greedy, only in it to screw as many people as possible while making a fortune and still getting to take my money and run while the poor bastard that lost his house moves to the cheap apartment in the city, villian.

They're advertising $120,000 brand-new houses here as "starter homes". LOL! I hope these housing developers (who gobble up farmland with their projects) lose their *sses along with the fools who are paying too much for the houses.

Oh I simply ADORE Fleetwood Mac!!! I've got most their albums on CD's, But My Mother (who got me into all her retro stuff) has a few on Vinyl! My Mother also used to to have ORANGE kitchen wares, Toaster, Blender, Deep Fryer, Hand-Mixer, Bowls etc. It was a whole matching set! I remember it wasnt a nice orange tho, it was a horrible burnt orange colour. I remember them so well growing up. My parents never threw anything away, so they had the same set from when they were married in 1975 and kept them until they broke... But I'm sure Mum still have remnants of this set in her cupboards now... I'll have to ask her about it Goes to show you, at least things were made to last back then!!!

Oh, I remember that ' 70s burnt-orange; Mom had a hideous set of drapes in the family room that color. Burnt Orange's coordinating colors were Harvest Gold, Olive Green, and Chocolate Brown. Orange, gold, green and brown - all pretty colors in their own right, but it seems the trend then was to blob a hefty dose of drabness into them turning them from pretty to ugly.
We didn't get married in the seventies, but we got a wedding gift I swear must have been recycled from then: a Harvest Gold and Burnt Orange set of Corning Ware casserole dishes with a little white 70's type flower on each side; some of ugliest cook-ware ever made. And yes, Hippy, stuff was made to last back then - they've survived six moves, and my cooking - and that last part is definitely testimony to their lastability; not many things survive my cooking. I still use them.
And apparently these colors are making a come-back...in kinder, gentler shades. Stylin' in my kitchen, I'll be...sort of.

LOL, thats cool. My Mum still has the 2 large Plastic Orange Bowls. Plus a set of saucepans with an orange flower design like you mentioned that again they've had since 1975 Pretty Groovy, but hey as long as it still works, thats all that matters... The only thing that annoys me about my Mothers Decor, is she still uses those lace Doily things, Under her ornaments and a lamp etc.

Oh! Pictures and everything! LMAO. My mom had those same orange bowls...she also had an olive green set. And if that thing with the handle is a strainer, I've got one just like it.....given to me by Mom forever ago.
It's kinda funny - we should all take pictures of our most out-dated stuff, and see who wins the "OMG, You Still Have That!" contest.
According to LX, I'd win in the "OMG, You Actually Wore That" category. She is going to be a pirate for Halloween, Jack Sparrow-style, and wanted to buy a costume - a $200 costume. Pfft! "Lemme see what I have that'll work", says I. She and her friend nearly fell off the bed laughing as I pulled my 80's clothes out of boxes. Hey, I was stylin' back then.
A long printed vest, a shirt with flowy sleeves and its bodice laced with a leather strap, a pair of black and gray striped pants, my big black boots, and lots of scarves, belts, and black jewelry, and perfect! But I received the "There is no way I'm even trying any of this on" eyeroll through hysterical laughter. So I took her in the other room, dressed her in my 80's Turned Pirate garb, and when we got it all on, presented her to her friend and the full-length mirror.
Their jaws dropped. Add a Jack Sparrow hat and sword, which she had already purchased, and she looks "OMG, Mom, you're the best!"
Which goes to show, Hippy is right...
Pretty Kick-@ss (I think that's 80's terminology; I can't remember, cuz I still say it), but hey as long as it still works, that's all that matters...
Although, my suggestion that she call herself Captain Jill Chickadee apparently doesn't work.

HA Thats awesome Phally! See Hording comes in handy!!! Yes the Yellow thing is a giant plastic strainer lol... The 80's rocked, I was born then and had older sisters who adored original boy band "New Kids on the Block"... I actually found an old VHS Video they had of them, which I sent to my most obsessed sister a couple of months ago, lol. Now thats something I had a heap of that I guess since the creation of DVD's has really gone to the wayside...VHS tapes... At least they were simple, even when I was little I could always pop in a Video without help. Nowadays you have to turn your TV on, press AV VIdeo, get to the menu to get it started, etc. And they say technology is easier than Pop'n'Play VHS with only two options, foward and rewind!

Oh, VHS tapes - we've got gobs of them still. And rewind! Oh, how I miss that feature when watching a DVD. Back-up and you have to rewatch the entire scene just to see the few seconds you missed.
Here's a show that I recently saw on television - actually, a spoof of a show on Saturday Night Live. Being born in the '80s, Hippy, he's probably way before your time. I'm not even sure he aired in Australia....or England either, so I might be the only one who remembers him. Probably Siren would. And maybe Scrappy. Hubs remembers because he had to suffer through it as his parents watched, just as I suffered when mine watched.

Your DVD player doesn't have rewind? How old is it? I'm thinking you need a new one. Come into the 21st century Madam P. Man my grandparents loved that show. My mom and I catch it flipping through PBS every so often. All I can say is...what's with the polyester. It was the champaign thin I think. You know bubbles in the glass.....?

Believe it or not, I like the Lawrence Welk show. I would have loved to have been in the cast, getting to sing those great old songs with the orchestra. And the costumes and sets on the show are an eye-full. And I'm just corny enough to like the squeaky-clean entertainment.
The Welk shows that are syndicated to PBS stations are produced here in Oklahoma. It breathed new life into the show and its stars' careers when PBS started running the shows again.
And as for VHS tapes, I have bunches. I need to get one of those machines to copy the tapes to DVD. But there's something I like about tapes
