"Little late, but here it is." This is taken from my blog about our vacation, which I finally got around to writing this past week. "There were also sounds no parent ever wants to hear – the anxious voice of my husband on the phone giving the girls’ descriptions to the police officer on the other end. Shelby and Sarah had gone on a bike ride, and when they didn’t return after two hours, I began to get worried. Splitting up in both my brother’s truck, and our van, we covered miles and miles of the twisting gravel roads that ran throughout the area. Every fear a parent of a lost child can have screamed through my head. After searching for hours without any sign of them, and with the impending dark showing signs of settling in, we called the police. Five minutes after the call was made, and five hours after they set out, the girls returned. They didn’t come by bike; not on foot, or even riding in a police car. They arrived by paddle boat. Wet, cold, and scared - one without shoes, the other with a twisted ankle, and both covered in swamp mud up passed their knees, a rush of words escaped their near-blue from the cold lips: There was a shredded bicycle inner-tube, a fall, and a bike of Sarah’s that could no longer be ridden. They walked the bikes, got turned around, and headed away from the house instead of back toward it, finally ending up on the shores of a lake. It wasn’t Rainbow Lake, which they could see, but one of the two outer lakes. They left their bikes, followed the shoreline, and met the “Hobo Santa,” a “creepy guy” who seemed more interested in learning where they left their bikes, than in helping them find their way home. “It’s a great day for exploring,” he said, heading off in the direction of the abandoned bicycles. Then there was the swamp that ate Shelby’s shoes, sucking them both off her feet, and leaving her to complete the rest of their journey barefoot. Once the swamp was crossed, they reached Rainbow Lake, and “borrowed” the paddle boat from a house with nobody home. Stripped of the wet clothes, and in their bathing suits, I dumped them in the Jacuzzi to thaw. Warm, and safe again, it wasn’t ten minutes later when I heard laughter as they recounted what would probably be a childhood memory retold many times, perhaps even to their children. It was a story titled “The Lost Girls: A Harrowing Tale of Adventure.” It was a chapter in their lives detailed in a letter written by them, and left on the paddle boat after its return the following morning; a thank-you note to the boat’s owners. It was a story with a happy ending. The girls were safe – even the bikes were retrieved; the Hobo Santa didn’t take them after-all." LX - aka Shelby in the story - is waiting for the movie deal about her adventure to come through, (eye-roll). The rest of the blog appears here: www.grit.com/A-Lakeside-View/Shhhh-Listen.aspx?blogid=876"Another attempt at shameless self promotion."

Oh, Gams - I am so proud! What a good story, and in Grit, too! Good for you!! That is a terrific tale, well worth the wait. And yes, I can definitely imagine them telling their grandkids about it one day. Yes, my Sooner gals are looking good so far. Tonight, they play Arizona State in the WNIT semi-finals. If they win it's *ominous "Dum dum DUM"* North Carolina on Sunday. Two challenging games, for sure. But win or lose, it'll be good for them. And Courtney Paris, our 3-time All American, needs just 18 pts to become OU's all-time leading scorer. It has been wonderful - a privilege - getting to watch her play. She is a once-in-a-great-great-while player. I love this picture of Courtney with Coach Coale:

LX is a smart kid; her friend, Sarah, is too. Both with good heads on their shoulders.....although sometimes it is difficult to see those heads through the cloud of silliness that surrounds them. LX has the most weird sense of wry humor with heavy doses of goofy mixed in - a lot of times she cracks me up; other times I just look at her like she's come from another planet. This is what she tells me the other day about the group of friends she hangs with - who all have the same weird humor, "Mom, when people first meet me, they think I'm a freak - but I've got it figured out; I brainwash them until they can't resist me, and then they become freaks too. It's the perfect plan - soon we'll rule the world." (cheesy grin from her; big eye-roll from me.)
Thanks for the kind words, Siren and Vox. You know Grit, Siren? It's been around forever. It's kind of funny - Hubs used to deliver it as a kid, back when it was in newspaper form; I've only known it as a current glossy-page magazine. I have to admit I think of you and your Mom's cooking every time I come to the recipe pages of the magazine.
The blog gig is kinda neat - I've been doing it since late July, and though I don't get paid for the weekly entries, it has led to two paid articles in the printed magazine - one of which is in the current issue, and can be found by going to the "home" page of the website - "Don't Blame the Goldenrod" is the title they used.
Today's six word entry - there are two:
"Hope the Sooners beat Arizona yesterday."
And <ominous dum-dum-DUM>
"Keeping fingers crossed they win tonight!"

Must have been a few frantic hours for you Lady P, needless to say I'm elated at the happy ending. By the way, is LX planning on playing herself in the film or going with a professional actress? Also have to add that your writing, if possible, is getting even better, this latest [ superb ] entry has jumped to number one position among my favourites, displacing "The Making of an Heirloom." Keep em coming, your audience awaits the next installment with bated breath. Guess I better add a six word entry to stay on subject, how about ...... "Fingers crossed the Sooners win tonight!" Alright it's not very original but t least it's appropriate.

Hello, gang. We've missed you, kat! Thanks for the well-wishes for the Sooner Gals. They played well against a very good UNC team, but came up just one point short, gosh dang it. Games like that take years off my life, I swear! But the Sooners are an improved team from last year, for sure, and some (who know much more than I on the subject) say they have a chance to end up in the Final 4 in the college championships. Boy, is that an exciting prospect! I'll keep you posted. Here's an article with a game recap: www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/recaps/112308aaa.htmlI don't think I told you that Courtney Paris has now reached #1 on OU's all-time scoring list, a remarkable achievement. But then, CP's whole career at OU has been remarkable. It has been a privilege getting to watch her in person as history was being made. But a lot of season remains. I can't wait to see what she accomplishes before she's done. Here's one for you ladies: My yearly mammogram's done. Is yours?

<blush> Thanks, Katina. You read my blog? I didn't know that; I'm very flattered. "Rainy days...Mondays. Today it's both." Are you kiddin' me Lady P, wouldn't miss your writing for the world, I'm your number one fan ....... and I don't mean that in a Stephen King/Kathy Bates "Misery" kinda way so there's no need for you to panic. Seriously though, yep I've read, and thoroughly enyoyed every one. Hello, gang. We've missed you, kat! Thanks Siren, sheesh I have been tardy with my posting lately. Sorry to hear about your gals, still they put up a great effort, it must have been nerve racking at the end.

Katina!!! Drat!
"Looks like I've just missed you."
Thanks for the non-Stephen King clarification. I've often thought my writing just needs to be put out of its misery, but like my ankles functioning just the way they are, thanks. <shudders> I hate that ankle-busting scene in the movie. I can't believe they made a commercial recently using it; I cringe and close my eyes every time it comes on.
"Fairly Bored Mom to the rescue."
Oooo, good one, Siren. Coincidentally, I had making an appointment on my list of things to do yesterday; I'm due at the end of the year. The office was closed for lunch when I called though, and I never got around to calling back.

This one was uttered by my mom yesterday (and on every Thanksgiving, as she gazes across the decimated feast):
Where to store ALL these leftovers??

Pass them over to Phalon, I am sure she wouldn't mind storing them in her garden in the snow that's coming down!
