"Right, TG! Cooler still, was that we watched most of the game with Mom. It was kinda funny really - the nurses came to each room to announce it was game time, and ask the patients if they wanted to watch. The entire hospital floor blared hockey; depending on the play, "yay"s and "awwww"s in unison came from every room. "
I love that, Gams! Sports can bring a great sense of camaraderie. It's nice that the game distracted you all for awhile.
Sounds like hockey has as great a following in your area as OU football does here. When a Sooners game is on tv, stores are strangely deserted, and traffic is much lighter. When I was in radio, car dealerships did NOT want to schedule a remote broadcast during a game. They knew they'd be wasting their time, since no one would leave their tv to visit the showroom.
Oh yes, Step - I remember when Chris and Jimmy were the sweethearts of tennis, literally and figuratively. Such a glamorous couple for awhile. And I remember Bjorn's headband and shaggy hair, as well as his powerful game.
Step, I may call upon your jinxing prowess when OU/Texas basketball rolls around!

I was thinking of doing the same thing during college football season, Siren. Michigan had such a dismal season last year, this year we could use every bit of help we can get.
Stepper, have you ever thought about giving up your current career to become a professional Sports Team Jinxer?

Sure! I started cheering OU on as soon as I saw this! I did actually consider it, but it doesn't pay well at all. Too many Dallas fans are also professional cheerers.

Don't forget, tennis fans... All-American final, All-England club, 4th of July...could it be any better?? Go Venus! Go Serena! Yeah it could, if there was an Aussie in it. Big game here tomorrow, the Cats and Saints go head to head, both teams are thirteen zip at the moment, the first time in 150 years of Aussie Rules footy that two undefeated sides have clashed this far into a season, gonna be a blockbuster. Go Cats.

Congratulations, Serena!!
Another one in the history books. It didn't really matter to me which sister won; I love them both. Serena looked unstoppable today. In that second set it looked like all she needed was just one break of Venus' serve and she would gobble her up. That's pretty much how it happened.
I imagine you're all into your game by now, Katman. Enjoy, my friend, and good luck to your Cats. I hope they are still the unbeaten team at the end of the day!

No word on the Cats? I hope that doesn't mean you're in a "frump" today, Katman.
Federer earns another page in the history book over the American, Andy Roddick and the Williams sisters take home another silver Wimbledon cup from the Aussies (sorry, Katman).
Great tennis today!

Women's doubles finals were great! Well played by both of the doubles teams.
Hey kat! Is your team still undefeated? (We hope!) Or did "they" simply have their best game ever and it happened to be against our Cats?

No word on the Cats? I hope that doesn't mean you're in a "frump" today, Katman. Kinda, sorta, thought not overly perturbed. Outscored them after getting off to a shocker of a start and conceding a five goal [ thirty points ] lead, to fall just six points short at the finish. With a couple of our best players missing, one having pulled out late, I'm confident we can turn the tables when/if we play them again in the Finals. ...... and the Williams sisters take home another silver Wimbledon cup from the Aussies (sorry, Katman). No problemo. Women's doubles finals were great! Well played by both of the doubles teams. Hey kat! Is your team still undefeated? (We hope!) Or did "they" simply have their best game ever and it happened to be against our Cats? As you see above Step "they" [ rotten sods ] managed to outlast us, despite a valiant effort to overhaul em. I like the "our" Cats reference mate, you're now an official Cats supporter, welcome aboard. I read in another thread that you've never been inebriated, maybe we can change that in twelve weeks time when we celebrate the mighty Cats winning another Premiership. Go Cats.

I don't know about "several" games, TG. It has been so horribly hot here that only the evening games would be doable for me. But my old boss called with an offer of free tix, so I will, at least, be catching the Monday night final. Also, I am taking some evening computer classes, which will also impede my game-watching. Many women's golf players and fans are rejoicing - the LPGA is getting a new president. And my fave, Annika Sorenstam, is now an adviser to the board of directors: www.usatoday.com/sports/golf/lpga/2009-07-13-evans-challenges_N.htm

I host a bar trivia game several nights a week and meet all kinds of people. At one of my shows I have the guy who is the stadium voice at Coors Field for the Colorado Rockies; you know, the voice that introduces the lineup, tells us who's up to bat, etc.
At this particular show I have Dave, a guy who helps me, and his mom came this past week -proverbial little old white-haired lady. Well, she's a big Rockies fan and came this night, sat alone in a booth, played a pretty tough trivia game by herself and finally nudged Dave, asking for the introduction to this Rockies Voice. Dave sheepishly asked if I thought it would be ok so I went over to his table and asked him. He obliged, really nice guy that he is. I was on the mic but halfway paying attention to the two of them, hand-in-hand, he with his million dollar smile and she with her googly eyes. She whispered something to him and I noticed he stood up (he was bending over to accomodate her height), rolled his eyes slightly then the smile came back, he stooped over once more and I heard him say in his professional voice, ever so quietly but quite clear, "Here's your Colorado Rockies!" She wiggled all over, let out a tiny squeal and gave him the kind of hug that would have taken the life out of a tree.
She left right after that, seemingly more fulfilled than she'd been in years. The Rockies Voice laughed as he told me about it later, saying that he introduced himself to her and she said, "I don't care what your name is, just say it." Moms can get away with being so direct. He gave her his contact information and told her he'd get her tickets to any game she wanted, having no doubt she'd take him up on it.
That bar/restaurant is standing room only on trivia nights, well over 150 people, and only a couple know what this guy does. He prefers to keep it on the down low but he was very gracious in acquiescing to this little old lady's request.

Cool story, Lola and what a great "job" you have with the whole trivia thing. Is it just sports trivia or any categories? Props to you on your night classes, Siren. We are suppose to get a "cold front" here this weekend. Highs in the 70's with 50's at night. I can't wait! Hopefully you'll get some relief as well, and will be able to enjoy some of the games.

Really neat story, Lola, about the little old lady and the Rockies Voice. The image of her giving him a hug that would have taken the life out of a tree made me laugh. Her response, "I don't care what your name is, just say it" follows a conversation we had here not too long ago about how little old ladies, (and the older women of us, who are yet ready to be called little old ladies), can get away with saying whatever is on their minds...or at least more comfortable saying it, whether they get away with it, or not.
We're supposed to get that cold front too, TG. And though this is the sports thread, I can't think of anything sporty to say about it....except I won't be sporting my bathing suit at the beach when the temperatures are hovering in the fifties.

The cool front hit here, too. I have the windows open, and am enjoying 75 perfect degrees. Ah, if only we had about 3 months of this, every summer.
I love that story, Lola - especially the part where he stood up straighter. Lol! I bet you are a great trivia host - one of those people who makes everyone feel comfortable. How are your Chiefs looking this season? Come on - it's gotta be better than last season. And as a Bears fan, you KNOW I'm not making fun of a team's misfortune! Your team has a couple of Okies-by-education on the roster: OSU's Ricky Price (safety), and OU's Mark Bradley (wide receiver).

Kat, I have a heads-up for you: one of our Sooner alums, Leah Rush, will be playing pro basketball Down Unda with the Townsville Fire. Leah is a great person, and a very dedicated, hard-working player. If you get the chance to watch her, I think she'll win you right away. Leah has had an interesting career since she graduated a couple of years ago. She has played with a couple of teams in the WNBA here in the States, somewhere in Eastern Europe (I can't recall where), in Spain, and now in Australia. Here's part of an email I got from her on facebook: "I just got back from Australia yesterday and am glad to be home for a few weeks before I head out there again. I played in Spain this past year and enjoyed it, but after the season, decided to go play in a summer league in Australia. It was a low level thing, but I truly love the travel and was more interested in going out there to see some new things than to say here and mess with wnba stuff. I ended up really enjoying Australia, so I've decided to go back this season instead of Europe. I'll be in a place called Townsville, in Queensland. I reckon it'll be a perfect place for me. It's a paradise spot for active outdoor adventure people. I am really enjoying traveling around so much, and hoops has been a really good vehicle to do that." BTW, it's not like Leah and I are pals and keep in touch all the time. My niece and I were wondering about her, so I took a chance, and looked her up on facebook. Sure enough, she was there. And as you can see, she was nice enough to send me an update. I'm sure she doesn't remember me at all. So, it's a testament to how nice a person she is that she took time for a note. Getting paid to play pro basketball and see the world. A pretty great gig, huh? Here's an old bio page on Leah from the Sooners' page: www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/rush_leah00.html

Thanks Siren, I'll certainly keep an eye open for her, not sure which matches are televised but I'll make sure I find out. Does indeed sound like a very nice person, and yeah, a "great gig" describes it perfectly, wouldn't mind spending some time up there "and" getting a pay check as well ............... www.queenslandholidays.com.au/destinations/townsville/townsville_home.cfm

Wow, Townsville is incredible! Siren, you carry her gym bag and I'll make sure her sneakers are sprayed with anti-fungal protection each day. Surely some sort of personal assistance is needed for a traveling baller. Thanks for the link, Kat.
Tommy, I realize you asked about the trivia gig ages ago... it's general knowledge trivia, some sports, some of everything each night.
Fortunately I have a couple girlfriends who have similar work schedules and once a week we gather at a pub for some much needed bonding over cigs and shots. All three of us are sports fanatics and inevitably some of the guys hear us going on about something and feel oddly free to pull up a chair and join our little girl-session. I find it interesting that they don't come over to flirt or buy drinks (they should definitely do the latter!) but to engage in something I'd call sports knowledge quizzing. We always pass with flying colors and the conversations turn into great debates. Last night it turned into a shouting match - in good fun - with the bar manager when he heard me dogging his beloved Raiders' QB but I digress. It's always a hoot and I find it utterly amazing that the guys are utterly amazed a woman knows anything about sports. I love my late Tuesday nights.

The Texas team in the Little League World Series in PA is a local team from McAllister Park, and they've been playing really well. They won again this evening. They've played two good teams so far and had come-from-behind wins. And they are having a blast! The local sports bars are all filled up with people watching the games.

Siren's got the gym bag; Lola's got the anti-fungal protection department covered. Hmmmm, what can I do? I know, I know....I'll hang out on the beach, do a little bit of diving, some sightseeing....
Dang, that's surely a beautiful place, and solidifies for me Hubs' and my dream to make it to Australia one day.
Here's another generalization that I thought was a hoot. I've got a gay friend who once said that gay men were much more interesting than straight men, giving the examples that gay men were knowledgeable about the arts, active in the community, and were able to hold intelligent conversations regarding the aforementioned topics. If straight men weren't busy drinking beer while watching baseball and football, they sat in bars talking about baseball and football. He was completely serious. I nearly spewed my coffee across the table at him, but refrained because coffee stains are a b!tch to get out of clothing. Instead I choked it back hard, (dang! the burn!), and have teased him about his statement ever since.
"What have you been up to, Phalon?"
"Oh, nothing, Bill. Same old, same old. Just sittin' around, listenin' to Hubs talk about football and baseball. You know, that thing that all straight guys do."
You'd think that being married to Hubs all these years, listenin' to him talk about football and baseball, I'd at least have learned a little bit about sports. (eye-roll)

Lola, I don't do cigs or shots, but I'd love to be a fly on the wall during your next Tuesday bull session. What fun!
I road-tripped with a friend to a concert last night. He's originally from my hometown, is a singer and local performer, is the courtside announcer for the Oklahoma City Thunder NBA team, and has a sis who played basketball for Texas Tech, and who has assistant coached at Texas A&M. Needless to say, he and I had plenty to talk about - and sports was only part of it. What great conversation, though.
Choking back your java may have hurt, Gams. But at least you didn't blow it out your nose. Now THAT would have given the old sinuses a good cleaning!

Ah, college football has begun!
It was the second game of Michigan's season yesterday, and they look a hundred times better than last year when they had their most dismal season in the school's history.
The game was still on when I got home from work, so I was able to catch the second half of a nail-biter against Notre Dame. Michigan scored the winning touch-down with about 30 second left in the game. Whew!
Our neighbors and us have had a friendly football rivalry for nearly a decade; they are HUGE Notre Dame fans. Since they were out for the evening, (BP with them, planning to spend the night) after the game LX, Hubs, and I drew a giant Michigan blue and maize "M" with sidewalk chalk on the bottom half of their driveway (so it wouldn't be covered by their vehicles) with the game's score written beneath. They came home about 11pm, and we heard them dragging the hose out, and washing off the offending chalk-written message.
We have not seen or heard from BP yet.
