I heard, Siren, but I haven't read all of the details yet. The rain threw the schedule off and I didn't get to see all the matches.
I'll get back when I catch up.

Caton Hill, one of my all-time favorite Sooners, deployed for Afghanistan last Friday. She played her high school ball in my hometown. And it was because of her, and another hometown girl, LaNeisha Caulfield, choosing to play for OU, that I ever started following the Sooners in the first place. It was Caton's tough, relentless play that endeared her to me. But after learning of her decision to join the Army Medical Corps, I admire her even more. Here's an article on Caton written by one of my favorite sports writers, Mechelle Voepel: sports.espn.go.com/espn/print?id=4646704&type=story# And here's an article from the Daily Oklahoman: newsok.com/jenni-carlson-a-new-mission-for-caton-hill/article/3417261

That's a beautiful article from Mechelle Veopel about what sounds like a truly determined and inspiring woman. Very cool you got to watch her grow up from a high school kid, to a college basketball star, and now, a doctor and captain in the Army. Hoping her tour over in Afghanistan is a safe and uneventful one.
And speaking of OU basketball, isn't the Lady Sooners' season about to start; or has it already?

I fully concur with Gams [ or should that be Thanksgiving Gams ] Ms Hill sounds like a wonderful player but even more importantly a wonderful person.
Wishing her a safe tour.
Thanks for posting that Siren.

Thanks to you both for taking time to read about Caton, and for your good wishes. She is an exceptional young woman, still well-remembered at OU. I think she'll go even higher places before she's done. Like you, I hope her tour is as safe and relatively uneventful as it can be. The Sooner gals are 1-1, and lost to Georgia about a week ago. They're currently rated #16 nationally. But I think they are VERY overrated. Our inside game is weak. But then, after 4 years of All American play from Courtney Paris, anything else suffers by comparison. I'll be watching the gals play tomorrow, matter of fact: soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/111909aaa.html

Oh good grief: the Sooners' Whitney Hand, one of the team's best shooters/defenders/leaders, injured her right knee during yesterday's game. Coach says they'll have to wait for an MRI on Monday to find out how bad it is. The good news is that, even without Whitney, the Sooners kept it close against the #5 team in America, Notre Dame: sports.espn.go.com/ncw/recap?gameId=293320087

Here's an update on my Sooner gals. They ended the season ranked #2 in our conference, the Big 12, and, I believe, #11 in the nation, surpassing the expectations of most everyone, after losing one of their best shooters, Whitney Hand, to injury early in the season. The Sooners get to play on their home court once again this Sunday, in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Here's an article: www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/031510aaa.html

Oooo, Siren! Finishing the regular season ranked 11th is more than pretty damned good. Since the first game is at home, are you able to attend?
Go Sooners!

I think I will be able to attend the game Sunday night, Gams. But if not, it will be televised. It's terrific that OU's seniors will get at least one more chance to play at home. I'm hoping it's TWO more chances, as they move on in the Big Dance.
I need to call Lola and see where she has my (I should say OUR) Sooner gals in her NCAA tourney bracket. Lola is as big a Sooners fan as I am. I bet she's rocking the Crimson & Cream at work, inviting the Colorado faithful to take their best shot.
Thanks for the support!

My Sooner gals made it to Round 2 of the Big Dance. They beat the Jackrabbits (I LOVE THAT NAME!) of South Dakota State, 68-57 to advance. Interesting, seeing the players of SDSU. Many of them were athletic, blonde women with names I'd be challenged to spell correctly, reflecting their immigrant roots. My cousin attended college in North Dakota, and told me how brutal the winters are there. When I marveled to my mom that the immigrants chose to willingly live and stake their claims in such an inhospitable place, she reminded me that many of them came from similar climates, back home. She made me laugh when she said, "They probably said, 'You mean, they're GIVING all this great land away?', and settled right in, when most folks wouldn't last 2 weeks." Here's a game recap: soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/recaps/032210aaa.htmlThe Sooners play tonight at 8:30. I won't be there. That's too late a tip-off for me, since I'm working tomorrow. And I'm not the only one who's skipping these games. Though the Sooners have among the top 10 best home attendance, the Lloyd Noble Center was only about half full at the last game (the first tourney game). Coach Coale complained about it, post-game. I think that the late starts, combined with the ticket price (about $25 per game) may be keeping some folks away. I could barely pay for my season tix this year, much less pay for post-season, too. Coach Coale, with her million-a-year income, may have forgotten what it's like to have to live on a budget. Our Oklahoma State Cowgirls fell to Georgia last night by just three points, a real heartbreaker. They fought very hard, and came up just one shot short. I don't think I've told Katina, but OSU has a sharp-shooting Australian playing for them, Tegan Cunningham, who has been such an asset. I have so enjoyed watching her play. She's a senior, and will be greatly missed next year. Here's a game recap: www.okstate.com/sports/w-baskbl/recaps/032310aab.html

I just tried to drill the results of tonight's Sooner's game, and came up empty handed - 8:30 there is 10:30 (I think?), maybe 11:30? here, so I'm betting the game is not over yet (it's just after midnight here now). Keeping my fingers crossed, Siren, while I go to bed.

You didn't miss much, Gams. The Sooners played quite poorly. But, luckily, so did the University of Arkansas/Little Rock team. Our gals prevailed, and are now in the Sweet Sixteen! They'll play Notre Dame this Sunday in Kansas City. Wooohoooooo! www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/recaps/032410aaa.htmlI have a feeling that the teams you might have seen in last night's game broadcast depended on the region of the country that you live in. But now that they have moved on, and there are fewer games for the network to carry, I'm hoping it helps your odds of seeing the gals play. And if you do, here's hoping they play better than they did last night!

Sheesh, how can you have any fingernails left after watching these games all season?
Go Sooners.

Sorry, Scrap. Kurt is not only a heck of a player, he is also one of league's premiere cuties. He will be missed. Thanks for the good wishes, y'all. I agree, Gams, that games like that are hard on the ticker. Many fans are saying it was the best game of the tournament, so far. The gals really stepped up. This Wednesday, it's OU vs Kentucky. Learn more here: www.soonersports.com/sports/w-baskbl/recaps/032810aaa.htmlA neat bonus to the Sooners' win was a group of excited text messages I got from Lola. She was so stoked by the win! Said she was sporting her Sooners sweatshirt (purchased when she visited here a couple of years ago) while she she worked last night. I wonder what the Colorado faithful thought of that?

After losing the Paris twins to graduation last year, and losing one of our best players, Whitney Hand, to injury this year, the Sooners have beaten most everyone's expectations, Kat. Getting this far is amazing. Getting even further is just gravy. Besides, the UConn (University of Connecticut) Huskies are so completely dominant this year, the championship is really theirs to lose. It would be an incredibly huge upset if anyone were to beat them. I mean, yes, anything can happen. But I would be completely surprised if anyone but UConn wins it all this year.

The Huskies sound formidable alright, but don't give up hope Siren, in 2008 the mighty cats went through the entire season with just the one loss but then got rolled in the Grand Final *sob* so anything's possible, and maybe, just maybe there'll be that gravy at the end of the season. If not they've done a fantastic job anyway.

I hear the Sooners are on tap again Sunday. The Final Four! Drat! I missed Wednesday's game because I got my days all mixed up this week, starting back to work Monday, and working part of my normal day off. Heck, even now I keep thinking it's Friday. Uhm....it's not, is it?
And along with the Sooners, gotta get in that "Go Cats" too!

Post by Siren on Apr 2, 2010 22:44:26 GMT -6
Yup - Final Four, baby!! I was proud of the way the gals won, getting there. They really schooled a scrappy young Kentucky squad, who came out, all amped-up, firing on all cylinders. KU had OU rocked back on their heels in the beginning. But they just couldn't keep it up. In the end, OU's maturity and experience paid off. But I have a feeling Kentucky will be back. Their young coach has really started something there.
This Sunday, it's Stanford. They've lost only once all year, to UConn. So this will be a great test for the Sooners. Here's hoping they handle it with the coolness that got them through the Kentucky challenge.
You're right, Kat. Anything can happen in The Dance. I'm ready to dip a biscuit in that gravy.

Thanks for the sympathy, Gams. Despite achieving more than anyone anticipated, I do think the Sooners are probably disappointed that they didn't make the final game. I admit, I am. I think they should have beaten Stanford in the semifinal. But poor shooting the the first half, and a curious lack of energy by our point guard, were their undoing.
Let's say it together, Kat: Yes, *sigh* there's always next year.
The amazing UConn did, indeed, win the national championship, their second consecutive. I believe they are now at 78 straight wins, which is almost beyond imagination. Congrats to the Huskies!

Congratulations on this season anyway, did a great job and probably exceeded expectations.
Go Sooners.

Just have to throw in a little woo hoo for Butler from my Mom. We were born Hoosiers despite our cross country trek to Hell Az. Mom has a little soft spot for the local teams.
