Beautiful song, Step. I hope you're feeling better.
That was a great post on youtube. And I agree with it. The power of music amazes me, too. It's the best medicine I know for every malady. It's the universal language. And, to me, it is absolutely as essential as food and water and air.
I performed Anne Murray's "A Little Good News" on the opry show last night. That show was recorded in the 80s, but is still right-on. I changed the name of the news anchor from "Bryant Gumble" to "Ann Curry", and the line "streets of Ireland" to "streets of Egypt". But aside from those changes, it still fits.
"A Little Good News", written by Charles Black, Rory Bourke, and Thomas Rocco
I rolled out this morning The kids had the morning news show on Bryant Gumbel was talking 'bout the fighting in Lebanon Some senator was squawking 'bout the bad economy It's gonna get worse you see, We need a change in policy
There's a local paper rolled up in a rubber band One more sad story's one more than I can stand Just once how I'd like to see the headline say "Not much to print today, can't find nothing bad to say", because
Nobody robbed a liquor store on the lower part of town Nobody OD'ed, nobody burned a single building down Nobody fired a shot in anger, nobody had to die in vain We sure could use a little good news today
I'll come home this evening I'll bet that the news will be the same Somebody takes a hostage, somebody steals a plane How I wanna hear the anchor man talk about a county fair And how we cleaned up the air, how everybody learned to care Whoa, tell me
Nobody was assassinated in the whole Third World today And in the streets of Ireland, all the children had to do was play And everybody loves everybody in the good old USA We sure could use a little good news today
Nobody robbed a liquor store on the lower part of town Nobody OD'ed, nobody burned a single buildin' down Nobody fired a shot in anger, nobody had to die in vain We sure could use a little good news today
Legend has it that, during the recording of that song, Anne Murray was so pregnant she could not draw a proper breath, AND had a cold, to boot. That recording won her a Grammy.

'Don't Like Mondays' from the Boomtown Rats is running through my head. As usual, there's more than one fighting for air time, and the other is the tune to 'I Dream of Jeanie'. Lucky me.

Lola, don't you just hate those twofer-one ear worms? I do because they usually weave themselves into off-key melodies with nonsensical lyrics which leaves everyone else wondering what the hell you're singing, making it difficult to pass the ear worm onto someone else.
Siren, not to sound corny, but one day I'd love to be there clapping loudly along with everyone else after one of your performances.

Awww, thanks, Gams! Many times, I have wished that my mom and I could see your flowerbeds, and that you all could have Sunday dinner with my family. And now, you're speaking of seeing one of my shows. If we could just get that "Bewitched" nose wiggle worked out, we'd really be in business!
I've had this lovely Johnny Mathis tune in my head for days. I keep singing the line, "And your lips cling to mine, it's wonderful, wonderful...Oh so wonderful my love. " Reminds me of my first boyfriend, a romantic fellow. I remember one particular walk on a foggy night, with him in his trenchcoat, and my hand through his arm. It was, indeed, wonderful, wonderful.
Sometimes we walk hand in hand by the sea And we breathe in the cool salty air, You turn to me with a kiss in your eyes And my heart feels a thrill beyond compare Then your lips cling to mine, it's wonderful, wonderful Oh, so wonderful my love.
Sometimes we stand on the top of a hill And we gaze at the earth and the sky I turn to you and you melt in my arms There we are, darling, only you and I What a moment to share, it's wonderful, wonderful Oh, so wonderful my love
Bridge: This world is full of wondrous things it's true But they wouldn't have much meaning without you
Some quiet evenings I sit by your side And we're lost in a world of our own I feel the glow of your unspoken love I'm aware of the treasures that I own And I say to myself, it's wonderful, wonderful Oh, so wonderful my love!

That'd be great for sure! Unfortunately my nose wiggle looks more like a bunny with a nervous tick than anything remotely bewitching.
Pretty lyrics, Siren, and a sweet story of your first boyfriend to go along with them.
I've got Evolution from KoRn stuck in my head. My CD has a scratch; the first part of the song is all that's listenable, and dang-it, I'd like to hear the end of the song just to get past the first stanza that keeps going 'round in my head.

Been singing this one lately, the opening verse, over and over.

I think that song was in "Fast Times At Ridgemont High", in a scene with Rat and Stacy. I'll have to see if I can find a clip of it.
I came across this gorgeous song, "Guess Who", on youtube, and was just swept away. It's one of the most beautiful songs from the 1950s I have heard. And there's a story behind it. Its young singer, Jesse Belvin, was getting quite a build-up by his record label, promoting him as a Nat King Cole-type crooner. And it was beginning to pay off. He was playing dates with some pretty big stars. Jesse's wife/manager was with him at a date in Arkansas, one of the first occasions there in which a black entertainer played for a white audience. It seems there were some racists in the audience who harassed the singer throughout the show, and even slashed the tires on the cars of the other entertainers on the bill. Jesse and his wife left the show, and shortly afterward, were killed in a head-on collision. An officer at the scene said it appeared the tires on their vehicle had been tampered with. Jesse's two young sons were raised by their grandmother. One of them, Jesse Jr, posts his father's music on youtube, under the name "dfancyman". You'll see links to his posts under the "suggestions" on this page. But wait till after you hear "Guess Who". It's so, so beautiful.

What a senseless ending to life; such a tragically sad story, Siren.
The song....can't you just imagine slow dancing to that one, out under the stars somewhere? That's the image I got while I was listening, anyway.

Absolutely, Gams - it's so romantic, it makes me swoon. And yes, it's a terribly sad story. I should have put a warning before I told the rest of the story. I love the glamorous, happy photo of Jesse and his wife that's included in this article. spinningsoul.com/2011/02/belviendies/

Hee hee! Thanks, Step! I always think of "Woolly Bully" when I think of those guys: I've been listening to a lot of Texas/Red Dirt music these days for my job, and am really liking what I'm hearing. Texas/Red Dirt music is a world all to itself, with its own stars and Toop 40 chart, which you can see here: www.texasmusicchart.com/Pages/Chart.htm . Just as I have become more and more disinterested in Nashville's faux country, I am becoming more and more a fan of this alternative country sound. I think even a head-banger like you would like a lot of this stuff, Gams. I've been driving myself crazy singing the few lines I know of this song over and over:

While we prepared the big meal at Mama's today, I listened to wonderful, timeless music from the Nat King Cole jazz trio. "I Miss You So" is one of the best tracks on that terrific cd, which I found for just two bucks at a used book and music store.

Going through a stack of mom's movie DVDs, the girls and I ended up watching "27 Dresses" the other night; Mom was big on romantic comedies. "Bennie & The Jets" by Elton John has been stuck in my head ever since.
And in my head, the lyrics I'm singing are just as wrong (but different) as the lyrics sung in the movie during this scene (I don't think I ever knew the correct lyrics:

That was on TV not so long ago! I like the bar scene, but making people wear all those hideous dresses for her wedding at the end was sweet!
Pretty cool that you and the girls have so many memories - I hope they appreciate what the moment is to you since it's your moms' movies making their moments with you. That's a mixed bag of emotions - atleast it would be for me.

OOOO. You've got good stores in your area! We do, Step. There's a chain of stores here called "Half Price Books", which carries music and movies as well as books. I find some amazing treasures there. I sang this one at the Opry last night. So, it's been on my mind all this past week. Anne Murray - Just Another Woman In Love

Anne Murray is a bit like Carly Simon - her songs are not just music with words, they usually have something to say.

You're right, Step. She was always a classy lady - never a hint of scandal. But she's remembered very well, because she had a timeless style and great songs.
There's a museum devoted to Anne in Nova Scotia. I love this bit about when it's open:
"The Anne Murray Centre is open from mid-May to mid-October each year and during the off-season by appointment or by chance."
"mid-May to mid-October"? "by chance"? Lol! I like their attitude. And I hear that Anne is known to pop into the museum to chat with fans. Wouldn't that be great?

One word for you, Siren: YouTube.
Have you ever? Any plans to do so? Shoot, I'd love to see and hear you sing, and chances are YouTube is probably the only place I'll be able to. Not to mention, in the vast wasteland of bad videos on YouTube, you'd be a shining star!
My Dad was a huge Anne Murray fan. He loved music, and sang in choirs and glee clubs since I was a little girl up to the time he couldn't do it anymore because of his health. All that music, but Anne Murray was the only singer whose albums I can ever remember him purchasing; I think he owned every one.

Very kind, Gams. Thank you!
My mom is a big Anne fan, to this day. I would love to take her to see Anne's museum, and to meet Anne. Sadly, I don't think she's up to a trip like that anymore. But it's nice to think about.
Every time I sing one of Anne's songs at the Opry, it never fails that someone in the audience tells me how much they love her. What a great thing, for an artist to be remembered so fondly.

I hear vinyl is making a comeback with the kids. I bought a new stereo several years ago that has a record player on it. Now if only the 8-track players were easy to find and buy. I've got some 8-tracks I haven't been able to replace with cassettes or CDs.
