Neither of the girls particularly likes the type of music I listen to, but that doesn't mean they don't listen (in the car, typically I give them little choice). Since I can't pick up a radio station in town that I like, most of the time I listen to CDs while driving. As a result, the girls know nearly all the lyrics (or think they do), and sing along.
Yesterday, "Happy?" by Mudvayne was playing, and BP was belting out it out from the back seat.
These are the lyrics as Mudvayne intended:
In this hole That is me Left with a heart exhausted What's my release?? What sets me free? Do you pull me up just to push me down again?
BP's version went like this....
"Left with my heart in sausage."
Huh?
I've been singing it ever since....stuck with "my heart in sausage".

Friday, after coming home from work, I had a beer, rinsed out the bottle when finished, and left it next to the sink to take out to the recycling bin. It was still there Saturday morning, and Hubs picked it up, put the butt end against his forehead, and asks, "What am I?"
Me: "A weirdo."
Him: "No."
Me: "That's debatable. A unicorn?"
Him: "Guess again."
Me: "I'm still going with weirdo, but I'll guess rhino."
Him: "No. I'm a narwhal!"
Me: "No, dammit! You're a jack@ss!"
He laughed. The Master of Irritating Songs of the day, he knew what would happen...and unfortunately, he was right! I've been singing this ever since...

I very seldom get an irritating song stuck in my head. Most of the time it's a song I enjoy, so it doesn't irritate me.

Shoot, I don't even have to know the song, and it'll get stuck in my head - all someone has to do is sing a few lines, and those lines will repeat themselves over and over all day long.
Curious, I just did a two minute drill - yes, some people are more prone to earworms, or INMI (involuntary musical imagery - there is actually a scientific name for it) than others. Research found that it has to do with the size and shape of a person's brain; one region of the brain that has to do with auditory perception and musical memory, and another region that controls pitch memory.
There is a way to break the earworm from replaying itself though, according to research - chewing gum!

Cool! I hope it works out for you. But don't let hubs in on the secret.

I don't chew gum. Maybe I should start.

Find something else to chew on instead. Carrot or celery sticks?

The refrain of a song popped into my head this morning completely out of the blue: "Car Wash" by Rose Royce
Except my version goes like this...
"I rake, and rake - those leaves never seem to stop coming. Rake and rake - keep those leaf-sucker trucks humming. Rake and rake - my fingers to the bone. Rake and rake - I can't wait til they're all gone!"
Had the lawn cleared of leaves yesterday, and this morning, there's a new thick carpet of them!

It is only just now getting cool enough to even think about that down here - and our cool is more like nice and comfortable for your area. There is a smattering of leaves in the streets, but no color in the trees at all. Only leaves that have gone dry, brown, and fell for whatever reason are blowing around. I noticed the Live Oak is dropping acorns so I suspect the deer will be making an appearance in the front yard one of these days soon - at least I hope so.

Twenty-first Century Schizoid Man by King Crimson. I must give that album an airing.

OMG, I haven't heard that name in years! In my senior year of high school - 1981/82 - I briefly dated a guy who liked King Crimson. I could not now, for the life of me, name a song they sang (except for one you just mentioned, only because you mentioned it).

A song that very frequently gets stuck in my head is "Sittin on the Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding. It'll pop into my head for no reason at all, and I'll find myself humming it without even realizing it. I love the song, and out of all the versions that have been recorded, Redding's is by far the best in my opinion.
BP though, turned us on to a most recent version the other night from an unlikely source - rapper A$AP Rocky. His version, with a tiny change to the lyrics - from "Georgia" to "Harlem" where he's from - sticks very close to the original, with maybe just the slightest bit of a modern edge to it. I like it a lot. I've heard Rocky's stuff before (not by choice; both girls like him, and have seen him in concert), and this is a huge departure from his rap style.
That's one of the things I think is so cool about cross-overs - it opens up a whole new generation to old songs, and it brings those songs into the forefront again.
Kind of a funny side note: BP played the song for Hubs and I Thursday evening from a playlist on her phone; I looked up the video yesterday. At about the 2:15 minute mark, he does this wavy hand gesture - the exact same hand gesture I always do whenever I'm singing out loud to whatever song it is I'm singing, and the girls have always made fun of it, and rolled their eyes (which of course, makes me do it all the more!). Once, I was even jokingly threatened that they were leaving me to sit by myself if I was going to make the gesture at a concert. It was an idle threat; I no doubt did it, and wasn't left.
So when I saw one of their favorite artists do the same thing, I had to text the girls the clip of A$AP Rocky doing the "wave" with the caption 'Always knew your Mom was hip. Tell all your friends; you saw it here first.' Cracked them up as much as I crack myself up.

He isn't bad. And you're right, he comes the closest to being as good as Otis Redding with this song.

When I looked up the A$AP Rocky video on YouTube, it of course, brought up a lot of other covers, including this one by Chris Cornell covering Prince's "Nothing Compares to U" (which I remember Sinead O'Connor's version best). Cornell's version reminds me everything I love about his voice:
It caused me to revisit some of my old Audioslave CD's.
And then this just dropped yesterday. It's a posthumous release; the boy in the video is Cornell's 12-year old son riding his bike through Cornell's childhood neighborhoods in Seattle. Young Christopher says of the video, "For me this video represents my dad and all the art he created throughout his life and what his music meant then and what it means now, not just to me and my family but the city of Seattle and all of his fans."
All the snippets of Cornell's past lyrics present in the video, is just another reminder why he will always be one of my favorite artists.

I mentioned in the Christmas thread that I revisited a bunch of Red Hot Chili Peppers songs to have LX put on CD to accompany tickets I got for Hubs and me to see a RHCP tribute band concert (coming up in a couple of weeks!). She made two copies of the CD - one for me too.
This one keeps replaying in my head - a mixture of funk, rock, and melody, it just makes me want to jump around without a care in the world. The video only makes the feeling stronger.
This one too...already seat-dancing as I listen...
OMG, I can't stop...no not "Can't Stop" though that gets stuck in my head too. This one though, is probably my favorite RHCP song to sing along with...

Oh, and when Anthony Kiedis photobombs the fire chief in your hometown....
Oh, and btw, it was during this visit to town, that BP as hostess/busser at the country club restaurant where she worked served him and his family their water when they were seated, under strict orders by management not to mention his fame at the table. Apparently, as a frequent guest there through the years, when he's out with his family, he is just a regular dad.

'Crimson and Clover' by Tommy James and The Shondells
Woke up the other morning with it on my mind. I hadn't heard it in years. I've been listening to a retro music station that harks back to the days of the north sea pirate radio ships and damned if they didn't play it later that day, long version too. Ahh Psychadelic Rock from the late sixties.....BLISS.

I've had that movie "Pirate Radio" stuck in my head since you posted this, Moonglum. I found it available On Demand, and rented it last night....too late last night, and I fell asleep about a quarter of the way through. I've seen it previously - not a great movie, if I recall correctly, but an excellent soundtrack. It was a two-night rental, so I'll probably try to watch it tonight, hopefully staying awake through the whole movie, if nothing else, just for the music!

Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers, been stuck in my noggin for over a week now.
Keeps popping up on You Tube, showing peoples reactions hearing it for the first time; great song.

I think it's very strange to wake up singing a song; how can the very first thing that runs through your head when you wake from sleep be song lyrics? The very first thing.
It's all because of him, as I told him it would be.
I was writing up a delivery order for a customer. I said, "If I get a song stuck in my head, it'll be your fault."
"Which one?" he asked.
"Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley", I said.
"Ooooo, good one! People usually say 'Addicted to Love'."
That was a week ago, and both songs have been running through my head off and on since, along with occasional blurbs from "Simply Irresistible". This morning's first thought in my head when I woke up was "Gonna have to face it, you're addicted to love."
The customer's name was Robert Palmer.

Thanks, Joxie. (pfft!) Local Robert Palmer is officially off the hook, and now it's all your fault.
Yanno, I don't even have to listen to the song for it to override whatever else was stuck there in my head.

I have decided there is something wrong with my brain (yeah, yeah, you all probably knew this years ago), but nobody - nobody - does this:
I've got the stupid stock alarm tune from my phone stuck in my head, and it's been there for about a week. It runs through my head off and on throughout the day, and has been the very first thing I'm humming when I wake up in the morning.
I haven't set my alarm in weeks!

Hhhmmm...you might be on to something there. Even without the alarm, I wake up every morning at the same time I do when I'm working. Maybe my subconscious thinks it ought to be hearing the routine annoying tune when I wake up, and when I don't actually hear it, my brain plays it for me.
Or something like that.
