Yeah. Too bad it isn't a 'day off work' holiday. But that doesn't mean you can't celebrate with a family dinner on your day off. Create your own family tradition with your own favorite dishes you have very rarely. Get enough interested in doing the same thing with their families on the same day, and perhaps it will spread like wildfire and become a 'day off work' day down the road.
hmm ... I've never heard what is a traditional Thanksgiving meal for Canada. I wonder if they have the same fixings or something different? Sounds like a two minute drill.
My mom's next door neighbors have a Mexican meal every Christmas. They lived in Germany and were so hungry for Mexican food, that when they got back to the US it was what they craved, so fixed it instead of the traditional Christmas dinner. They decided to do it for every Christmas.

Bummer. Our Christmas party at work had to be cancelled because of installation of a new fire extinguisher system. And they're doing something with the halon too. That is followed by a communications surety inspection and during the inspection no one can move their PC so, we have to move and cram into somebody else's office from 7 Dec to 18 Jan. We're taking up enough space that we're killing their party too. It's gonna be a fun holiday season.

Can you not move both parties to an outside location? Maybe combine both parties to help keep costs down. Or rent the same space for a few hours and split up the hours per party.

Not bad ideas Joxee, but not an option either. People start booking Christmas parties in January around here - there are no locations available. It's just too late. The construction was supposed to be done from Oct to Nov and wouldn't have been a problem, but they delayed things for a little more than a month and now we're stuck.

I would suggest a Church Fellowship or Dining Hall, but I assume there will be alcohol at the party, and some Churches wouldn't allow that.
We sometimes get together in my niece's husband's big garage. If someone had a huge garage, or knew of someone with a huge garage, you might could have it there. Of course the garage we eat at has a wood stove in it, so it is pretty warm.
If you knew the weather was going to be nice, and on the warm side, you could have it outside somewhere. Kind of like a tailgate party.

Saw this post on Facebook by an acquaintance of mine and just had to share it in here.
I have a personal comment about the above but don't want to spoil the mood for those who appreciate the above story, so I tried to hide my comments below. Unfortunately, I don't know how to easily hide comments, so it will just have to be out in the open ... until it gets removed.
I have re-posted it as a quote because it is not my original work and I have all but given up on religion personally. I refuse to apologize for the mentioning of God in the quote because I feel that being Politically Correct has just gone too far. If you want to talk about your "God" you should feel free to do so but you should not stop others from talking about theirs. I have a feeling that, if there is a God, (s)he is really frustrated with all the hypocrites saying that they are the only ones who know anything about the subject. How can any human be so conceited that they think they can know the mind of a God!?

Thanks for posting the story, Spock. It's a lovely message....no matter what a person believes.
I'm not sure why you think your comment might be deleted....or why you'd even think you'd have to hide it. Then again, I happen to feel the same way as you about religion....and speaking of such, I feel an aspect of religion should be tolerance, but that it is one part that seems to get lost the most. That is the message I personally take from the story.
I also agree with the gentleman in the story. A little ice cream is good for the soul.
And to hell what it does for the hips!

Spock: Thank you for sharing that post. And thanks for being tolerant of all people's beliefs. Especially of the ones you don't believe in yourself.
A lot of people tend to forget that what you put out into the world will come back to bite you. Backlash can be a horrible thing to have to endure, and then you find out too late how the others you 'oppressed, denied, etc.' feel. If one religion is forced out, another religion is soon to follow, and another, and another. Because everyone knows that only their religion should reign supreme, and it's just a matter of time until they make it so that only their religion can be practiced, and enforced on others.
I don't see any reason for your comment to be removed. For one thing, this isn't my board, it's Kym Taborn's. And I'm not sure of her religion, but she never came across as someone who would deny anyone their opinions, as long as those opinions were presented in a 'take it or leave it' fashion. Not used to flame, or start a flame war.
And if this were my board, as a religious person, your comment didn't ruffle my feathers. So, I would still let it stand. According to my belief, and my Bible, God gives free will. I have free will to believe in the 'One True God,' and others have free will to not believe.
No one has the right to force their beliefs on others. And they shouldn't have the right to take away anyone's beliefs either. And I saw nothing in your post that disagreed with this statement, nor with the way I feel about people's free wills.
Everyone should just get along! Nice to have you here at Whoosh.
