I just checked and saw they were both made in 2005 and wondered if "The Descent" came out first and if so maybe the director of "The Cave" decided to alter his so it wouldn't appear to similar?
Which version of "The Descent" do you tend to go with MM, that she escaped physically or not?

The dates on the DVDs are: The Cave 2005 & The Descent 2006.
S * P * O * I * L * E * R * * * S * P * A * C * E
And I'd kind of like to think she got away. Losing her child and finding out her husband had cheated on her with Juno . . . she deserves to hopefully come out of her insanity and go on with her life. Get married again, and have more children.

Well that kinda blows my theory out of the water if "the Cave" was made first. So you're opting for the more optimistic ending; maybe I'm just an old grouch [ heck I "am" an old grouch ;D ] but I prefer the other version, certainly a lot darker yet seems more fitting to the mood of the film I reckon. Whichever way one wishes to view it they're both powerful endings though, and leave a lot of room for interpretation.

I guess that's the ending I want, because, if I were to get into a real-life deadly situation, I'd want to survive.

Reckon if I got into that particular situation even if I came out intact the few remaining brain cells I possess would be well and truly gone, heck I felt uncomfortable a few times just watching the film, talk about claustrophobic. Thanks for that spoiler alert thingy Jox, I'll be sure to use it next time I ramble on about the plot of a film.

Siren - I mailed your tape back late last week after watching "The Springfield Rifles". Do you know I've never seen a Gary Cooper film? Are you surprised at that? (eye-roll) No, I didn't think so.
Thanks again - there's something special about watching movies lent to you by a friend. It's like good books - they're meant to be shared.
Let me know that the tape made it back in one piece, okay?

Hello all, may I join in, in this conversation?
I agree with Mij, B movies can be lots of fun, but I know we shouldn't do it, but we do seem to compare them to the good movies of today, and realise what a laugh or what utter rubbish they were! But then again, they didn't have the special effects back then, so give them thier due, for their age the 'B' movies of yesteryear were quite forward thinking, especially the ones about going into space. Big applause for "Quatermass And The Pit"though, great film!

Of course you can join in Vox, no need to ask, just jump in any time you feel like it. "Mij" now there's a name from the past, hasn't posted here for quite some time now unfortunately, you must have been reading quite a way back through the old threads. I agree also, those old "b" features were quite a lot of fun, at times even better then the main feature that they supported, I think "Them" about a colony of giant Ants was my favourite, good special effects, great atmosphere, fine movie all round.

Know what you mean vox, never know what you were going to find in those pods. Very good film, not often you get remakes that stand up well against the original, but the two remakes of IOTBS were quite good as well. This got me thinking of all the old Sci-fi and Horror flicks I've seen, and it's a looonnnggggg list containing some very ordinary films, but also a lot of surprisingly good ones as well.

When I was a kid, one of our local tv channels had a Sunday afternoon "Mystery Theater", featuring the classic Bela Lugosi, Lon Chaney, Boris Karloff movies. Wonderful! But I later liked the "Bs" of the 50s-70s, too, like "The Blob", "Blacula", "The Incredible Shrinking Man", and even the wretched "Night Of The Lepus", about blood-thirsty rabbits! Gams, I received the tape by mail in fine shape. Glad you enjoyed it! You need to see Gary Cooper in the 30s and 40s. He was soooo beautiful. He and Clark Gable were apparently quite jealous of each other's popularity and status as a sex symbol. Legend has it that Coop had a Duesenberg automobile custom built one-foot longer than Gable's.

Saw Sandra Bullock's latest today, "Premonition". The reviews were terrible for this film. But I put my trust in Sandra, who's one of my favorites. And I was entertained.
Sandra plays a housewife who learns that her husband has been killed in an accident. But the next morning she awakens with him beside her, perfectly fine. This film is sort of a dark spin on the"Groundhog's Day" plot, except that in this case, each morning, Sandra awakens on a different day of the week her husband died - sometimes before, sometimes after. She tries to make sense of the details of the week, and figure out what to do next. Can she prevent his death? Does she want to?
If you see this film, don't think too hard about the details of the week, or try to keep them straight in your head. Some viewers are annoyed because they feel there were plot inconsistencies, and some big plot holes. I've learned to not take things literally in fantasy films like this. I just suspend disbelief and enjoy the story. And I did enjoy this one.
PS: If you hate the ending, you won't be alone. That's been fairly unanimous among viewers.

Saw one of Angelina Jolie's earlier films yesterday, "Original Sin". Here's a plot summary from imdb.com: "Can love release our true self? A wealthy Cuban coffee exporter, Luis Vargas, advertises for a US wife; Julia Russell, from Delaware, sends her photograph, but the woman who steps off the ship is much lovelier. Luis marries her immediately and gives in to love. But Julia may not be who she claims: first a private eye shows up on behalf of Julia's sister, then the sister herself." But by now, Luis' wife has disappeared...
I'd read bad reviews for this film. But I figured that with Angelina and Antonio as stars, at worst, it would be 90 minutes of eye candy. And, with sumptuous costumes and settings to showcase their beauty, they are certainly a feast for the eyes here. But this was a surprisingly entertaining movie. I saw a highly sanitized tv edit. Be aware that imdb.com says that the dvd version contains much explicit sex (and there's an even more explicit unrated version available, too). Antonio and Angelina's chemistry isn't quite as combustible his with Catherine Zeta Jones in "Zorro", but close. Just a gorgeous couple. Geez, do mere mortals really look like that? Not in my neighborhood!

Funny, looking at the post above - here I am more than a year later, talking about Angelina Jolie again.
Last night, we attended a sneak preview of Angelina's latest, "Wanted", an action-thriller in the vein of "The Matrix" - a young man is recruited into a secret society of killers. There's lots of shooting, chasing, and copious violence, blood, and gore, plus some R-rated language and a couple of brief-but-graphic sex scenes (without Angelina). This was an entertaining, very loud film, with a surprising sense of humor. Angelina's very good in action films, and our audience loved her. When she first appeared, a murmur went through the crowd. Honestly, the last movie I attended where a star created that sort of reaction was Clark Gable's first close-up in "Gone With The Wind". (BTW, every time I've seen GWTW in a theater, there was ALWAYS a reaction to Gable. The last time was in '99, and even 40 years after his death, the sight of Gable could still elicit a gasp from the ladies!)

I recently saw 2 good movies. The first, "WALL-E", is probably the best movie I've seen this year. As the old cliche' goes - I laughed, I cried. Though this is an animated movie, and kids would probably like it, I think adults would like it more.
Tonight, with much anticipation, I saw "The X-Files: I Want To Believe". I'll be interested to see what others here think of it. If you see it, and would like to discuss it, please post a review.

What did you think of "Enchanted", Hippy? I know some hard-core Disney fans objected to it making a bit of fun of the Disney princesses.

Apparently, LX has tons of favorite movies. She likes them so much that once she rents them, she can't seem to return them. (eye-roll).
The movie rental store is about two blocks from our house, and frequently she, or she and BP will walk up there and rent movies. I knew there were a couple that she didn't return on time. I was quite surprised to learn how many. I went with her this past weekend; her and her friend's plan was to rent a bunch of movies, and have a rainy Saturday Movie Fest.
"Mrs. Phalon, are you aware you have a late fee on your account?"
"Yes. How much?"
"$15.00"
Grrrrr. These are $1.00 movies with a five day rental period; $2.50 for new releases that you can keep for two days. How is it possible to rack up $15.00 in late fees - damn, I've never even come close to being that late returning books; the Library Biddies would have my head.
She didn't have enough money to rent her movies and pay the fine, so I told her this was the one and only time I'd bail her out. My favorite movie rental guy laughed, and very specifically went over when her movies were due back.
Choices for the Movie Fest were:
We Missed Watching Them On Halloween Tim Burton Movies: The Nightmare Before Christmas Sleepy Hollow (Johnny Depp stars. Bonus!)
Mystery: The Secret Window (Johnny Depp stars. Bonus!)
Sad Movie: Phenomenon (my suggestion; their choice - The Notebook - was taken. Score one for Mom; they loved Phenomenon...Phenomena?)
Typical Teenage Movie: The Breakfast Club
They are due back today. I'm taking bets on whether or not she'll remember.

Dang, that sounds so familiar, Siren, but I can't remember watching it. I'll have to check it out at the movie store - it sounds more along the lines of LX's speed than BP's.
I have The Notebook? Oh, wait a minute...wait a minute. I remember LX holding up a disc and asking what it was; I replied it says "DVD", so it must be a "DVD", (eye-roll). Then she ran off with it, and I haven't seen it since.....and judging from the state of her room, I'm sure she hasn't either.
I guessed the ending after we watched this one right after watching "Angel Heart" on Halloween. Two completely different types of movies, but with similar in a round-about kind of way endings. I was dying to tell Hubs how I thought they'd end, but he wouldn't let me, knowing I'm always right. Yeah, yeah - but this time I was.

Have been opting for comedies only these days...except I did have to watch "A Star is Born" with Kris & Babs the other night. Then the original was on one of the movie channels late late one night, but I couldn't get into it. Comedies...I love Ashton Kutcher & Cameron Diaz both and I really enjoyed "What Happens in Vegas". It was cute...almost as cute as either of them and it managed to distract me for a couple of hours. I also like "The Sweetest Thing" with Diaz & Christina Applegate...(and Ms Selma Blair that starred in a Xena ep). Their road trip scenes to the wedding are just funny. And then there's Ashton and Bernie Mac's remake of "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner". I think it's just "Guess Who". That's a pretty light-hearted feel good movie. Not a comedy, but I watched--again for the thirteenth time--"Reign of Fire" with Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey...with the dragons. I love that movie but I can't decide which he-man lead is the sexier of the two. I guess when you're not sleeping and the tv is on 23 hours a day, you gotta get interested in something.
