Ah....welcome, Missy Phalon!! Johnny Depp....mmmm.....he is a cutie. EDWARD SCISSORHANDS & SLEEPY HOLLOW are two of my fav Depp flics. You know in July his new movie comes out....CHARLIE & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. Mij, sorry, it's a Tim Burton production. I love the old Willy Wonka & Gene Wilder will be hard to top in my opinion----especially with Burton at the lead. (I'm with Mij on Burton productions).
Travolta--I have always loved him....even when it wasn't cool to like John, I liked John. Phalon, I know you didn't fall for him in his white polyster & disco heels & I'm guessing Vinny Barbarino was what got you either.....Have you seen SWORDFISH? Probably one of my fav JT films. PHENOMENON is one I love to watch & always cry & smile with. I liked him in the movie, PRIMARY COLORS also. I think his protrayal of the President was pretty good & I liked him & Kathy Bates together.
I don't think I've ever seen "Meet Me In St. Louis"....will have to check this one out.
I'm sorry to say I can't add much on Asian flics, Bosatsu. Are they all so bloody?? I know the "Kill Bill" Saga is not Asian, & Tarantino is usually not stingy on the red stuff, but I cant' get into these movies with so much blood spraying all over the place in every scene.....I want all the action & I love the fighting in "Kill Bill II" (didn't see I) but too much blood spray for me!! Pick one from your list, Bosatsu, & I will seek it out so I may become more rounded as a movie watcher.....

At Marysgurl. hmh one you say... in that case I have to say the japanese movie "Go", not to be confused with an american movie also called "Go". Also, stay away from Ichi the killer. At Mij Yeah Stephen Chow is the one who made Shaolin Soccer also. Forgot about that one, I like that one too. As for shogun, hmh don't know really if one could count that as asian. When touching the topic of tv series and asian, there one series from japan thats really good, it's called Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO), it's based on the manga and anime by the same name.

Thanks, Bosatsu. I will seek it out & watch it.
Freebird...."Eurotrip" has been in all the video rental stores. I have seen it there but have not watched it. It has moved from the new releases now, tho, so ask at the counter where it is on the shelf.

I bought Eurotrip simply for the Lucy Factor. It has it's moments, most of which are unbelievable (you do NOT swill absinthe down like that, not if you don't want to end up like Van Gogh at any rate, hehehe) & a fun soundtrack. One thing I did like about this US made comedy though is that everyone is made fun of, including the US & nothing & no one was sacred

I said, "Yes mum, I will watch this with you unless you start singing along, then I reserve the right to leave." hehehe Just watched again the introductory 4 telemovies of Lexx which made up the first season of this 4 season series. Not overly well acted, the storylines are mixed at best, but the show rides high on emotions & bizarre plays on sexuality. Great stuff

ah...Brian Downey....the chic with the extreme "Pebbles" hairdoo....good stuff!!
Saw BERSERK 1967, Joan Crawford, Ty Hearndon....altho I DO NOT endorse the circus on any level, this is an entertaining little mystery of murder & mayhem set in the big top! I love these old movies....& Ms Crawford is as elegant as ever. This one is in color complete with a couple of nice little musical numbers along the way....

Are you thinking of one with Vincent Price?? Black & white? The names may be the same, but this one is about J. Crawford's daughter resenting her & killing all the peeps in the circus so it will go bankrupt.....JC owns the circus.....

I'm going to get my act together & go see Sin City
The reviews have been mixed though.
In the world of home cinema though, I'm still making my way through the Lexx series.

Mij, did you make it to see "Sin City" this weekend.....reviews... please & thank you if you did? Have you seen ads for SAHARA This one looks pretty action-packed.
Bosatsu....caught one of your Asian flics this weekend...."Ichi, something..." I have a hard time watching foreign films because I can't just sit through a whole movie without moving around & doing other things....hard for me to sit & read a whole movie....what I did read was decent, tho......

I hate to read subtitles... just dub the dang things... I'm so busy reading, I miss out on facial expressions and such and end up lost in translation.

the problem with dubbing is that there is hardly any GOOD studios like Titra to dub movies any more. so i usually prefer to see new movies in whatever language they started out in.

When I know a movie has subtitles, I usually don't watch it. I watch something else instead.

I'm with Jox' on this one....usually just pass them on by. The only reason I even started this one is because I told Bosatsu I would try out some of his Asian flixs....It's the same reason I never go to the movies---what else can I get or get done while I'm paying $9 to sit in that dark, crowded movie theatre??

I prefer a movie to be in the langauge it was intended to be in as a lot of the nuances in the original are lost when dubbed. Just need good subtitles, but better obviously is an understanding of the langauge & culture of the original.
Not seen Sin City yet. Just watching Lexx & remembering what an excellent series it was.

Have any of you seen the original Amedeville Horror with margo kidder and james brolin?
That was our selection for family movie night cause I want my kid to see the original before the remake and oh my goodness I walked away with a lame feeling. When I was a kid I don't think it would have scared me.

the book has got to be better then the movie only cause the special effects sux'd in the original movie. IMO
Has anyone seen the new release cause if it is as lame I wont spend my money to go see it. Though it would be intersting to see what kind of effects they came up with. The possibilities were endless, but of course my imagination is much worse then the big screen can handle...so a good book can scare me much more then a movie.

Subtitles get in the way!? you are breaking my heart. No worries though. I don't really like subtitles on english speaking movies (live in sweden so it's common here) but I don't really notice them in asian movies, guess it's a thing to get used to. Ichi The Killer, I still don't understand what happened in the end.

Bosatsu.....I guess if it were more commom here, I would be more used to it too, altho I would probably just end up watching even less TV....lol. Sorry to say I didn't make it to the end of "Ichi....." I did channel surf by another Asian flic last night, but I had neither my contacts nor my glasses, so needless to say, I passed it by..... I promise to watch the whole thing next time I come across one....

I hope you start to enjoy them someday. I thought I'd mention some favorite english speaking movies but I have hard time comming up with them. Vanilla Sky, Whale Rider, Donnie Darko and Boys don't cry are some of my favorite. Those are the ones I can see in my dvd collection but I'll try and come up with more later. One more asian movie that should appeal to the fans of the subtext in xena. Not that there is subtext here but you know what I mean. Wu Die (aka butterfly) Butterfly is adapted from Taiwanese author Chen Hsueh's short story "The Mark of the Butterfly". Starring Josie Ho, Eric Kot, Tian Yuan, Isabel Chan and Joman Chaing, it is about a woman's struggle to come to terms with her true self, the importance to break out from her cocoon and set herself free. Flavia (Josie Ho) is a married teacher, who lives a comfortable but uneventful life with her husband (Eric Kot) and daughter, until one day she meets Yip (Tian Yuan), a young girl caught shoplifting in a supermarket. After rescuing her, Flavia is slowly seduced by the free-spirited singer, re-igniting the desires she has long buried. Years ago, Flavia (Isabel Chan) had a passionate relationship with the rebellious and political Jin (Joman Chaing), until an event forced them apart. Flavia, torn between her devotion to her family and her feelings for Yip, must choose between being responsible to others or living the life she wants for the first time... Info copied from www.yesasia.com, wich is a great place for asia movie import. Pretty cheap also if one buys the hongkong versions.

Das Experiment has arrived. German DVD film based on a true psychology experiment about the effects of power on individuals. Have seen it before & also seen real footage of the actual experiment (which was cancelled mid-way through due to excesses). The movie takes some licence with the truth but is compelling viewing......
