Oh-my-god, and wasn't it gorgeous. I was out riding my bike around 8:30p Monday, it was halfway between dusk and dark, and there was this big, beautiful golden moon hanging there, looking as if it could just be plucked from the sky.

from The Learn Something New Every Day File; Category - Misheard lyrics: All these years, I thought they were singing 'take a load off Annie'. Actually, like much of Levon Helms music, the meanings of the lyrics of The Weight are vague. A traveler trades taking Chester's dog for a place to sleep. Somehow the traveler also assumes the responsibility (the weight or load) of passing along Fanny's regards to the townspeople. Or so I've been told by folks who knew Helms. And your confusion about Annie is justifiable, there's a Miss Annie and a Miss Fanny in the song and both are sexualized in similar ways. Now that that's clear as mud... scamp

It's f's fault! "Off Annie" and "off Fanny" sound similar. That and because I never bothered to look up the lyrics, and assumed "Annie" was a nickname for Anna Lee and they were the same woman.
Misheard lyrics are kinda fun in that when you finally learn the correct ones, you wonder how you could have ever thought otherwise. Vague lyrics are fun too; all this Annie/Fanny stuff reminds me of one of my favorite songs by Incubus - "Anna Molly". If you just read the lyrics, their meaning is vague. If you listen to the song without knowing its title, it's not as vague. But if you put the two together, it's clear - "Anna Molly" is sung as "anomaly".
Got nothing for "tower" except Jimi's "All Along the Watchtower" which doesn't exactly fit. Maybe Stepper will step in and do his thing.
