Bread And Butter - The Newbeats Many people remember The Newbeats for this one song and believe them to be one hit wonders, but that's not true. Everything's Alright reached #16 and "Run, Baby Run (Back Into My Arms)" reached #12 on the pop charts. Siren probably knows more about them; all I can say is I remember the song.
I like bread and butter, I like toast and jam, That's what my baby feeds me, I'm her loving man.

from "Kiss It Off" by Little Feat. A guy that lived in our barracks in Germany turned me on to Little Feat with the album "Dixie Chicken" - which became one of my all-time favorite albums, and in my opinion, Little Feat's best. I hated "Kiss It Off" though - the last track on side one of the album, and I'd always pick up the needle when it started, and flip the album over. Must have listened to it enough times though for it to stick in my head - it was what immediately came to mind with "toast".
Over 30 years ago, and right up until now, I always thought the line was "milk toast in love".
One so sad, feeling's painful You can't deny, there is no peace Is no love, milk-toasted love Ain't no velvet glove
