I know & I love it. Unfortunately, I am the only one in the house that will eat it. Mary pretends, but then always leaves most of it on her plate. My fav way is on the grill with butter & purple onions & garlic & mushrooms, but the steamer will work just as well when there is no other grilling to be done. Num-mmy!!

Asparagus is one of those things I had to acquire a taste for....like brussel sprouts!! I absolutely love these little cabbage heads as an adult but when I was a kid, my mom use to make me eat some of whatever she cooked. I don't mean one or two sprouts, but 5-6!! I would wait til she got up & started putting things away & I would drop them on the floor & kick them under the refrigerator!! I had pretty much the same affection for broccoli & cauliflower too, but now I love all of them!! Maybe if I grilled you a up a medley of them my special way & layed you a big ole T-bone beside them, maybe then you would eat.....??.....hmmmmm, Scrappy?? Just for lil ole me?? I won't make you finish anything you don't like.....!!

Yes, asparagus definately has to be cooked right. It has to be fresh, (canned asparagus is just ick), and cooked so that it is not overdone. It's got to be crisp.
I never liked it until I was an adult, because Mom used to cook it too long. Same thing with broccoli; she cooks until it is that icky olive greenish color. Us kids, when we all get together, love to endlessly tease her about her slaughtering of the broccoli, saying she likes to cook it until she's made sure it is absolutely dead.
Kind of an interesting thing about asparagus, (if you like food trivia, I suppose), it was first cultivated in ancient Greece and Rome thousands of years ago. It grows wild around here, and we have a little patch of it in the back yard.

Just had to add that I love brussel sprouts too, (again, a thing Mom used to cook until they were definately dead, instead of the way they are best: crisp). And beets, and parsnips.

ooh,ooh....give me some of those beets, too, Phalon!! Make mine the ones that mom pickles--I like those best. Don't know if I ever eaten a parsnip....kinda like radishes or rutabega(?)?? Not real crazy about that family of sorts....but I do like turnips when mom cooks them---which is usually with the greens.

Never had rutabega, though it was another of those things Mom cooks.
Parsnips are more like carrots - really sweet carrots if they are left in the ground until after a hard frost; that is when they are best. Use them in stews and such, or roasted with olive oil. Yum. Or in homemade chicken soup - they add a wonderful flavor that can't be beat. (oops, I think I just gave away a family secret on that last part).

It's one of those "northern" crops then. That's why we didn't grow them. I need to investigate their culinary contributions now that you've let that little diddy out.....

NO parsnips, NO rutebegas, NO ocra or anything else slimy. I might try your asparagas Q if the T-bone was a bone in Ribeye marinated my special way for a whole day.
One more thing to add to my ewww list....EGGPLANT! YUCK!
However, I absolutely love Brussel Sprouts.....so can we compromise?

A friend yesterday gave me some parsnips he'd been growing in his garden all winter. OMG, as big around as my leg, and I told Hubs to sharpen the blade and fire up the circular saw just to get through them.
Love eggplant parmesan, Scrappy. Mmmm. But I suppose all the sauce and cheese masks the taste of the eggplant.

Oh yeah, I use to make a fruit pizza when I was doing the catering thing...use crescent roll for crust, cream cheese for the next layer, kiwi, strawberries, fresh peach or apple slices....just about any fruit will do....& then drizzle melted icing over that ....was that something like you had, Jox'??

There's some kind of crust, but I don't think it was crescent roll... then a cream cheese concoction... then the strawberries in a Jell-O type goo... and a huge dollop of cool whip on top... I'll see if I can get the recipe. (Which is what I started this thread for. Sharing recipes.)

Had pizza for dinner tonight. Homemade stuff with fresh asparagus, (mmmmmm), baby spinach, and portabella mushrooms, of which the name always reminds me of a portly fat man; a jolly fungi.

People here go hunting for morels, Scrappy. I've never though, always afraid I'd poison myself by picking the wrong ones.

My dad would hunt for them every year...
Did you know you can grow your own?
