The Negro Motorist Green Book - Wendell P. Alston Never read this but here's a jacket description: The GREEN BOOK with its list of hotels, boarding houses, restaurants, beauty shops, barber shops and various other services can most certainly help solve your travel problems. It was the idea of Victor H. Green, the publisher, in introducing the Green Book, to save the travelers of his race as many difficulties and embarrassments as possible.” pfft....too bad there was a need for it. Here's the modern equivalent. Safe LGBT Travel destinations

Hopefully one day soon, there won't be a need for the modern equivalent.
Kinda along the same vein is a bit of our town's history: In the 1800's, three decades before WWII, Jewish immigrants opened the doors of their houses, many of them farmhouses, and offered their hospitality to other traveling Jewish immigrants (unwelcome in many establishments) as vacation safe havens. It was the start of the resort boon here. Eventually 60 Jewish resorts were flourishing, and the town became known as the Catskills of the Midwest.

The Country of the Blind ~ a short story by H.G. Wells that kind of reminds me (in a roundabout way) of an old Twilight Zone episode I saw once about a beautiful lady in a hospital who was attended to by a staff of monstrously hideous-looking medical personal. Great story - the both of them.

Back Home ~ "Text and Drawings by Bill Maudlin".
This was one of the books I brought home from Mom's. Written in 1947, after the war, Maudlin lampoons "the kinds of things most decent people hate but don't do much about." Having been gained some fame as a cartoonist while in the service, the text is accompanied by cartoons.
This one looks like it'll make it to my 'to be read' stack.

My dad loved Bill Maudlin's "Up Front" cartoons, which concerned the life of average soldiers.

Let's Go Home ~ Cynthia Rylant, Illustrated by Wendy Anderson Halperin A bit of a local connection here - Wendy used to live in town, and still owns a summer home here. An icon in town, she does a lot for the schools and local businesses. When I was Liscary Mom, I had her come to the school to give an illustration demonstration and teach the kids basic techniques. LX has a signed copy of "Let's Go Home" which is one of my absolute favorite childrens (and adults) books; I just love the message, and the illustrations. Here's a tiny peek: www.wendyhalperin.com/books/go_home/gohome.htm
