Thanks, Becka! I'm a rarity - the only female I know of who wasn't charmed by "Steel Magnolias". I guess I need to give it another try.
I'm a 30ish British woman, worried about my single status, fighting my weight, my age, and my bad habits. I'm writing down my cigarette, alcohol, and calorie intake, hoping that will help control them. And I'm jotting down daily musings, as well. For instance, if I'm so in love with my sexy, hip boss, why do I keep thinking about my starchy, but attractive, childhood acquaintance, who seems not attracted to me at all?

Thought I'd give someone else a chance before jumping in, but seeing as how there's no takers ................. one of my favourites this one [ that's if I've read your clues right ] so would you happen to be the lady with the diary, namely .................
Bridgit Jones?

Righto! I love that movie, too. And the book made me literally laugh out loud.
Great job!

It's not my turn is it, kat? You solved the Bridget Jones puzzle.

Righto, let's get this show on the road.
I'm an aging lawyer taken to the bottle after falling on hard times, I'm offered a very large and important case and a chance at salvaging what's left of my career, but powerful forces are arraigned against me, forces determined to see me lose the case, with things going badly at every turn, can I stay off the booze long enough to prevail?

Sorry, kat. Didn't mean to be bossy. I just wasn't sure if it was my turn. I'm bad about holding up the game that way.
The one that comes to mind is Paul Newman in....hmmm..not sure. Was it "The Verdict"? "The Jury"? Something like that?

Sheesh, will you stop with the bossy, you were merely asking a question, nothing bossy in the least.
And you'e 100% correct, it was Paul [ in the role that should have won him the Oscar I reckon ] as Frank Galvin in "The Verdict".
Excellent movie, with great performances from James Mason, Milo O'Shea, Charlotte Rampling and Jack Warden, plus a small, but outstanding, performance from the wonderful Lindsay Crouse.
Over to you.

Wasn't there a Newman movie from that same time period in which he costarred with Sally Field? Seems she libeled him, or something? I vaguely remember that.
I'm a recent divorcee, starting over with my teenage son in a small town, trying to get a horse ranch started. I've found a friend in the local druggist. And though he's considerably older than me, there's a strong attraction. But now my worthless, but veeeery sexy, ex-husband has shown up.

Sheesh, will you stop with the bossy, you were merely asking a question, nothing bossy in the least. Just happened to spot this and realised it could appear a bit abrupt. I'm sure you realise I was just pulling your leg, I'd hate for you to think I was being snippy, I'm really sorry if that's how it appeared. You're absolutely correct, the year before "The Verdict" he made "Absence of Malice" with Sally, another of my favourites [ got em both on tape ] Really powerful story about the power of the press and the harm it can do if used indiscriminately, small but excellent performance by Melinda Dillon. And yet another top one, a small, simple, rather old fashioned movie, but a real delight, and the chemistry between the two leads is great, can't for the life of me remember your name, but you were played by Sally Field, opposite James Garner, and the film is "Murphy's Romance".

Oh, no offense taken, kat. No worries at all about that.
There you go - "Absence of Malice". Thanks for putting my mind at rest. Melinda Dillon will live forever as the mom in "A Christmas Story". She was so great in that scene where she knocks that woman's leg lamp off the table, and in the bit where she washes her own mouth out with soap. Kat, is "A Christmas Story" beloved in your country, too? I know many families here who watch it as a Christmas tradition.
You got it! I love that one for its grown-up love story. Refreshing. I couldn't remember Sally's name in that one, either. Looked it up: Emma Moriarty. I do love that movie. I think I'll put it on my Christmas list this year.

Kat, is "A Christmas Story" beloved in your country, too? I know many families here who watch it as a Christmas tradition. Not so much as "White Christmas" with Bing, Danny and Rosemary I don't think Siren, I can't recall a Christmas when that one wasn't trotted out on the tele. Good idea putting "Murphy's Romance" on your Christmas list, it's the sort of movie you can watch over and over without tiring of, a real "feel good" experience. I'm a London gangster who, while attending my brothers funeral in Newcastle, begins to suspect his death was not an accident, so set out to find those responsible, using any means, and any amount of violence, to acheive my goal.

Oh, I love "White Christmas"! Rosemary Clooney is one of my favorite old-school vocalists. It's great seeing her so young and pretty in that. What a cast! Love the songs, the settings, the plot. I love it all. And I'm with you Aussies, watching it every holiday season. Another great one is "White Christmas", with Bing and Astaire. That one gets at least one annual viewing at my house.
I don't know this movie, kat, though I have a feeling I should. A little help, comrades? Perhaps an era, and a clue to the leading man, kat?

Not that long to go now and it'll be time for you to dust off the old vhs [ or dvd's ] for another viewing , boy the years just seem to fly don't they, no sooner finish celebrating one Christmas and another's upon us.
Right, early [ very early ] seventies, and the leading man is probably one of the best known Brits' in the business, two Oscars and a string of films dating back to the sixties. The name of the character he plays forms part of the films title, and it was remade fairly recently [ unfortunately ]

I'll take a guess on the leading man, and hope someone can help me out from there...
Michael Caine?

Yep, you're right with the name, it was indeed Michael Caine. The remake [ in 2000 ] had Sylvester Stallone in the title role.

If you ever get around to seeing it Siren, make sure it's the original and not the remake, like chalk and cheese it quality.
Right, this one should be easier.
I'm female, the only survivor of a deadly encounter that saw several of my friends killed in brutal fashion, though being alive for over eighty years I'm still only in my twenties, I've died and been "reborn", I am ..........................

I will take a guess here, Mia. Is this the handsome rogue played first by Christopher Lambert in "Highlander"?
