That's a pity Becka, thought maybe we could sign you up with the Sooner girls, always on the lookout for talent.
It seems MM is preoccupied at present, so I'll have a crack at the last game Siren, would you happen to be the guy in the little pork-pie hat, namely .......................
Carl Kolchak.

That's exactly it, kat. Gosh, I loved that series. As good as Darren McGavin was, his supporting actors there in the news office were great, too. Fun, quirky, well-written characters. The best thing about McGavin's characterization was that he didn't make Carl out to be a superhero. The guy was scared to death most of the time. But he was more scared of his boss, cranky old Tony Vincenzo. So Carl always got his story. Do you remember the Cathy Lee Crosby episode, in which she played a woman who kept her youth through sacrificing young men to a goddess? Several years ago, I met Cathy Lee at a celebrity fundraiser, and told her how much I enjoyed that episode. She said it was one of the most fun experiences of her acting career. BTW, Cathy Lee was as lovely as ever. I wonder if she's still worshipping that goddess?

You know Siren, I have virtually no recollection of that series, not even 100% sure if I actually saw many of them, which is surprising, because that type of show is right up my alley. I do remember Cathy Lee Crosby from a number of tv shows, exceptionally lovely as you say, you weren't a little worried by how lovely she still looked were you, maybe she was indeed still worshipping that goddess, and was lining you up for the sacrificial alter. Righto, I'm a character from another western series, plying a hard and dangerous trade. I am distinguished by the type of sidearm I carry. The actor playing my character went on to become a mega star on the big screen.

I don't think I'm cut out for guessing the TV series ones. I think so far they are all before my time. But hey at least I can learn about some great shows I missed.

Cathy Lee better not look to me for eternal youth - I'm fresh out.
The first weapon that comes to mind is "The Rifleman", with Chuck Connors. But I have a feeling that's not it.
I just read Chuck's imdb bio, and what an interesting guy he was. I knew he was in fabulous shape back in the day, but didn't know he played both pro basketball and baseball. That is quite a feat.
Bear with us, Becka. We'll be back in your lifetime soon, I promise.

Cathy Lee better not look to me for eternal youth - I'm fresh out. Oh I somehow doubt that Siren. I meant to say in my post that it's not "The Rifleman", but forgot, I thought that would be the first one you would go for given the reference to the sidearm. And yeah, Chuck was quite the athlete apparently. This guy was "sort of" in law enforcement, but not in an official capacity. The actor became somewhat of a legend, one of his first films was a b-horror movie that gained cult status [ and was later remade ] He died at the early age of fifty. Like Siren said Becka, hang in there, we'll get back in this century asap.

Boy, buddy, I just don't know. All those good clues, but I'm drawing a blank, here. I'm hoping my compatriots can help out.

Ummm, looks like the Cavalry isn't arriving Siren, so I'll give ya some decent clues. The name of the b-horror movie was "The Blob" this actor also starred in "Bullitt" and "The Great Escape". That should give you his name, just hope you know the name of the series he starred in.

Thank you for the clues. And what good ones they are! I know (thanks to you) that it's Steve McQueen. And, in my mind's eye, I can even see him with that little cowboy hat he wore. But I don't know the series. My dad, a huge fan of westerns, would be so ashamed of me!

Ah well, ya can't be expected to know them all Siren, there were a lot of westerns on in those days. If you ask your Dad I'm sure he'd tell you, it was called "Wanted, Dead or Alive", Steve played bounty hunter Josh Randall, and he carried a sawn off Winchester as a sidearm, quite a good show if memory serves, although to be truthful I think I enjoyed all the westerns, not sure I was really that discerning back then.

I think that's a male trait, kat. If it's on the Western Channel, my dad will watch it. Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen that show. But I remember that distinctive little hat McQueen wore. Since I struck out on this one, want to serve up another?

That sounds good, a dedicated Western Channel, we don't have one here.
Right, this one should be a breeze, much more recent.
I'm female, still attending school, though facing far more problems then your average teenager, along with learning my schoolwork I have to save the world on a weekly basis. Though far prettier then him, I feel a strong affinity with Carl Kolchak.
Piece of cake right.

Are we talking "Buffy, The Vampire Slayer" here? I've only seen a couple of episodes, but my sis used to watch it all the time.
Yes, The Western Channel. My dad loves it, and The History Channel, too. Give him those 2 channels and a bag of Tootsie Rolls, and he's a happy man.
So you've never seen the original tv movie of "The Night Stalker" either, kat? That is a shame. It is a truly frightening, creepy, unique show. I must say, the series wasn't of the same level of suspense and quality. But then, what are the odds of Karl running into some kind of spook all the time? It got a bit silly pretty quick.

Yep, we are indeed talking Buffy, the gal with the mean kick. Never watched it myself either Siren, just seemed so repetitious, Buffy goes to school, Buffy meets monster, Buffy dispatches monster, Buffy goes home.
Your dad seems like a man of simple pleasures [ often the best kind I reckon ] No Western Channel here, but the History Channel gets a fair workout I can tell you.
Afraid I don't recall the original of "The Night Stalker", about my only vague memory of the series was Darren McGavin with that little pork pie hat perched on his head. I'm sure it'll pop up on one of the myriad channels eventually, I'll keep an eye open for it.

You pegged it, kat - my dad is, for sure, a man of simple pleasures. And he passed it on to me. Doesn't take much to keep us happy. For me, it's a good ballgame (preferably watching in person), cooking, or a favorite book or movie. Puttering with my plants makes me happy, too.
Okay, try this:
I'm the San Francisco police commissioner, solving cases with the help of my hip, kooky young wife.

Not me Siren, my idea of a good time is going out raging till the wee small hours of the morning and waking up with a hangover.
;D Okay I fibbed, I think you, your Dad and me sound like three peas in a pod, watching the mighty Cats, a good book or movie, and spending time here are more then enough to keep me contented.
I "think" I know this one, but have no idea of your name, would you be the guy from ............
"The Commish?"

No, kat, this series is from the swingin' early 70s. It starred a former big-screen big-star heartthrob. His character's name was in the title. His leading lady had another series in the mid-80s, co-starring with a "Saturday Night Live" alum.

Right, think I may finally have cracked the case. Can't recall your name, or your wifes. or the name of the show [ doing well so far aren't I ] but think the two leads were played by Robert Wagner and [ I think ] Stefanie Powers. How's that, did I hit the bullseye or miss the target altogether?

No, but you did bring a good show to mind: "Hart To Hart", starring Robert and Stephanie as the globe-trotting, rich and sophisticated, very appealing amateur sleuths, Jonathan and Jennifer Hart. Had almost forgotten about that show. Thanks for the memory jog! And you're right - that show fit many of the clues I gave.
Here are a couple more clues as to the show I mean: it was at the beginning of the 70s. Its leading man played a Texas oil man opposite Liz Taylor, and shared a party line with Doris Day, among many other movie roles.
It occurs to me that you may never have seen this show. I don't know if you have access to all our shows in Australia. But this one was a hit in its time, on a major network.

You got it - "McMillan & Wife"! Susan St. James played the slightly spacey hip-chick wife, and Nancy Walker played the wise-acre maid - the sort of role Thelma Ritter would've played to perfection back in her day. What's really funny about catching reruns of this one is Rock Hudson's groovy early-70s hipster haircut and mustache.
