No secret that I haven't had time to keep up with anyone lately:I've been writing. A lot. And I'm having a wonderful time--everything that goes into doing the Think Sideways course is challenging and forces me to think, to question, to tear apart what I do and how I do it. I love this. It's like doing a hard workout; you're tired afterwards, but you feel great.
But while I've been getting all these great writing workouts, I've been doing terribly keeping up with folks. I'm averaging about sixty hours a week at the moment, and last week was more.
I'm going to answer one BIG question this week, and I'm going to do it in what I hope is a really cool way.
But first:
=========================== What You DON'T Know About Guys in Hardhats ===========================
The newest 33 Worst Mistakes Writers Make book debuts today: Construction and Construction Workers.
Pete Nix brings you insider information on construction sites, construction workers, and the entire business that you can use right now to create real, compelling characters and add story details that convince people who know what they're talking about that you do, too.
You'll get the language, the equipment, the techniques, the hierarchy, and even the gender issues:
* From the roach coach to the dozer, your characters will say the right things at the right time * You won't look foolish putting a foreman or a superintendent where he doesn't belong, or having the wrong tool in the wrong place * In this male-dominated industry, you'll find out where and how women are stepping up

==================== Where Do You Start? ====================
Here's the most frequently asked question I've had recently.
"I have all your clinics, but what do I do first?"
"I don't know what to start with in writing my novel."
"I do way too much world building and I never get around to actually starting my story."
"I'm stuck. I have no idea where or how to start a novel."
I just answered this same question for my Think Sideways students in a stack of modules for their course, so I'm going to do something a little different. I'm giving you the first module.
This is one of three you ALWAYS use, and it is the VERY first thing you do when you're starting a story. The module is in PDF form, it's the exact version my students get, and it's a small download (2.4 MB) so even folks on slow connections shouldn't have any trouble with it. It includes both description and worksheets;I hope you find this module useful.
My students have been working on accessing both their subconscious/right-brain/Muse mind and their conscious/left-brain/You mind.
When the instructions refer to letting your Muse answer the question, focus on writing without stopping or questioning anything you put down on paper. Keep the part of yourself you may think of as your internal editor out of the process.

======================== Brief Publishing Hiatus ========================
I've been bringing out one new 33 Mistakes book every two weeks, but I'm not able to keep that pace up while I'd writing the course. So the 33 Mistakes series is on hiatus for the next several months while I finish writing the Think Sideways course.
If you're writing one, I'll still be taking completed manuscripts.I just won't be putting them together for a while.
That's it for this week, and probably next week as well.
I'll be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, challenge yourself. Take some writing risks.
Never give up on your dreams,
Holly
