I Left My Heart In San Francisco - Tony Bennett I heard a ventriloquist on TV doing Tony Bennett - but somehow he sounded better than the original.

Surfin' Bird (The Bird's The Word) - a truly irritating song recorded by The Trashmen in 1963.
The song brings back a load of childhood memories, but not from when it was released and reached number 4 on Billboard's Hot 100. I wasn't born until a year after it was released, and it'd be another decade until it received incessant radio play where I grew up. If you lived anywhere near Detroit - even in "the sticks" a 'burb surrounded by farmland - you could not escape "The Bird's The Word" in the summer of '76. The reason was Mark "The Bird" Fidrych, the Detroit Tiger's rookie pitching phenom. The Bird was a tall gangly character with a mop of curly blonde hair, who did odd things like talk to the ball, pat the pitchers mound, and run around with a cheesy, goofy smile on his face. And he won games; he packed Tigers' Stadium....a phenomenon in itself since the Tigers were a bottom-of-the-barrel team, finishing in last place in the Major Leagues the year prior.
If you were a baseball fan - especially a Tiger fan - the summer of '76 was all about The Bird. If you were an 11-year old girl who didn't give a sh!t about baseball, the summer of '76 was all about The Bird - he was my first celebrity crush.
