My boss has done the same the past few years - he lets his brother-in-law hunt on the nursery grounds. I hate it! Since hunting season starts after the nursery closes for the season, and a lot of the time, I'm the only one on the property getting everything ready for winter while the crews are out finishing their landscape jobs - just me and the hunter. I'm all over the place, moving plants on a Gator out of the garden center area to the portion of the nursery where they're kept for winter. Everything is surrounded by the woods where the man hunts. Though it's probably improbable that I'd accidentally get shot by a stray bullet, and I know the boss-man thinks I'm being ridiculous, I refuse to be on the grounds while the hunter is actually shooting, even if it means coming in late in the morning or leaving early in the afternoon. <shrugs> There are just too many hunting accidents every year for me to feel safe out there when he's hunting.
Same.
It starting raining last night, and was coming down quite heavily this morning, though it's stopped now. If it was a normal December here, everything would be covered in a thick layer of snow. It's already over 50 degrees though, and is supposed to get near 60 today.

What did I just do there? Whatever kind of grammar that is, it's improbable it's correct; probably. (rolls eyes)

Same to you, and everyone else here! Sending peace, love, and hugs for the New Year from the snowy Mitten (yep, it finally looks like winter here!).
Has anyone heard from Katina, or know whereabouts in Australia he lives? Been reading about all the wildfires and evacuations there, and hoping he is out of harm's way.
Gotta run. First coffee date of the new decade awaits.

Nope. Haven’t heard from him. I believe he lurks from time to time, so maybe he will pop in to let us know he’s still out there. —— We had rain, and a lot of wind over the weekend. The warm temps have dropped some. It would still be nice during the days if not for the frigid breeze.
I was at my sister’s house until the ball dropped. We played a new version of Uno. She had made lasagna, and it was delicious. She said it wasn’t the Speedy Lasagna recipe I use, so maybe I’ll abandon that one for a new one. I love that one fresh out of the oven, but not so much the leftovers. I think it’s the oregano that I like. Maybe I’ll add a tad bit more to the new recipe ... unless that’s why I can’t eat the leftovers. Too much oregano?
Hope everyone had a great start to the new year, and that it is a better year then last year.

Happy New Year everyone.
Been wondering the same thing myself. I've been watching the news reports and it looks pretty horrific what with people gathering on the beaches and in the sea to escape the fires.

The location I got from his IP doesn't have any close fires. Most of the fires further away from the area are under control.

That's good to know! I had looked up if Geelong was affected by the fires, since that's were the Cats are from, although I have no idea if he likes the Cats because he lives there, or just likes the team. Geelong, along the coast, did have a factory that caught fire shortly after Christmas, but that's all that's was mentioned, although Victoria, the state which Geelong is located, is greatly affected by the wildfires.
It's nice and sunny here this morning, and you wouldn't know it, but the temperature is right around 40 degrees. It feels much colder though, because it's very windy. Got back from the walk with the ladies about an hour ago, and my ears are still thawing...and I had a hat on this time!

It's 7.30 am, still dark but the temp is 11C and it feels quite mild out there. No doubt that will change as the month progresses.

The temperatures have been pretty consistent here for the past handful of days - right around the mid-30s, and any precipitation, which hasn't been much, has been flurries. The wind though, changes constantly - when it blows, it feels bitter cold.
I've been walking with the ladies every morning; we walk just over three miles on our regular route. When it's windy though, we've changed our route along the lakeshore, zig-zagging our way through neighborhoods further away from the shore, trying to avoid as much as possible walking down roads that run east to west - the wind coming off the lake barrels like a freight train down those roads!
We have had some really nice calm periods though, when it's more than comfortable to be outside. Thankfully for BP, Saturday morning was one of those calm periods - though it was cold, with snow flurries. She had a photo shoot out in the dunes at one of the state parks a bit south of here - wearing just a crepe, flowy blouse with winged sleeves, jeans, and was barefoot!!! The photographer - some artsy guy from Chicago - at least let her put on her coat and warm-up quite often in her car, but I'm surprised she didn't catch a cold.
Better get going - skipping the walk with the ladies this morning, but not skipping walking. Meeting my boss, and then heading out to a different dune area for some hiking. It's calm here - I hope it's calm there too!

If I could get my feet to stop hurting, I might walk on nice days. I mentioned once I'd like to get a bike, but someone pointed out to me that is bad on the knees ... and my knees do bother me if I keep them bent up for a bit. So, gotta rethink any kind of exercise.
The days have been in the 40s/50s, and will soon warm up to the 50s/60s. The nights have been in the 20s/30s, and are to warm up to the 40s/50s/60s. That one day in the 60s must be a mistake? We shall see.

Nice to see you drop in, Kat.
Supposed to get rain tonight ... and for the next few days. But, the days are above freezing, so anything we may get at night will not stick for long.

Katina! So glad to know you're ok! Have been keeping up with the news of fires, and it's so devastating.
Catch up later. Coffee date, and I set the time - what I was thinking, I don't know; I made it way too early!

Sorry not to have dropped in earlier and let you all know I'm not near any of the fire areas, worst we've had is a bit of smoke haze on a couple of days so all is fine.

Well, you're here now, so it's all good.
The wind has been blowing a lot the last few days, and it's blowing a severe thunderstorm my way right now. There are strong rotating winds coming my way, with hail coming behind that. I haven't lost my lights yet, but if I do with this storm, it's warm enough not to freeze to death. I don't think the heat has kicked on all day. It's on 64. The outside temps is 65, but feels like 63. It's more like April than January.
The dog got up on the bed with me this morning, and I think she'll be in bed with me when I crawl back in. It's almost here, and the wind is roaring like crazy. Laters.

I hope that the fires and smoke don't progress any closer to where you are, and that things don't get any worse for your country before they get better. Stay safe, and keep us posted, Katina.
It's a similar situation here. We've been keeping close tabs on the forecasts here throughout the week. The new semester of college starts Monday, and I've got to get BP back sometime before then. A winter storm was predicted to hit, and originally Sunday looked like the best day for the drive. The forecast keeps changing though. The temperatures are supposed to drop below freezing sometime over the weekend, rain changes to sleet, and then ice, with the worst of the storm supposed to stay south of us. It was all supposed to be over by Sunday. Instead, tonight and Sunday now looks like the worst, and it's here and north instead of south. It was 40 degrees when I got up, it's dropped to 33, and the rain has just started changing to ice and temperatures are supposed to drop into the low 20s by this evening.
Ice from here to Grand Rapids - 3/4 of an inch of it, and snow north of Grand Rapids. The town where the university is, is supposed to get 10 inches of snow by tomorrow. No way I'm even going to attempt driving on ice for the hour drive to Grand Rapids - that is not only more hazardous than driving in snow, it's downright impossible. She just might have to miss the first day back to classes - luckily, she only has one Monday class this semester.

Well, I survived the night, and the lights never flickered. The dog panted so hard the bed shook. The temps tonight are in the low 30s. I hope BP doesn't miss more than a day of school. So strange your baby is in college. Whoa.

I know, right? I didn't end up taking her back yesterday. We woke up to just about a 1/4 inch of snow, but the dangerous part was the layer of ice that was underneath the snow; I just didn't want to risk it. Probably could have left early afternoon - the temperature got to just above freezing at 33 degrees, but leaving then would have me driving home at night, and I was afraid the roads would refreeze. She had e-mailed the professor whose class she is missing today, and was told she'd be missing quite a bit, and would have to play catch-up for a while. But what can you do? I was right - by 6pm, the temperature dropped back below freezing. Icicles formed on the eaves of the house, tree branches were ice-lined, and in the street light it looked like they were covered in diamonds; when the wind blew, sounded like tinkling little bells. We got a little more snow last night - maybe about another 1/4 inch, and it's already 34 degrees this morning. Figuring we'll leave here around 10, which hopefully will mean I'll miss rush-hour both going and coming home - I hate stop-and-go traffic. I saw the little red fox run across the yard last night, which reminded me of an article I read a couple of days ago, which, when I first read it, reminded me of the coyotes in your yard a couple of weeks ago - especially the last paragraph. www.nytimes.com/2020/01/09/science/chicago-coyote-attacks.html?action=click&module=Well&pgtype=Homepage§ion=Science

One of life's mysteries: When you want them to be right, they're wrong, and when you want them to be wrong, they're right. Why?
The forecast predicted snow starting yesterday evening through this morning, followed by a slight rise in temperature, changing the snow to freezing rain.
Yep, got that. It started snowing around 6pm, and this morning there was maybe about 3 inches accumulation. It's right at 33 degrees now, and raining ice.
The forecast for today says, "Heavy snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain becoming all snow, 1-3"; breezy this afternoon."
And that's before the Lake Effect snow kicks in tonight; 8-12 inches expected by tomorrow morning.
Kinda puts a halt on my weekend plans, which have changed from going to the Women's March, to shoveling snow. Better start shoveling now - or at least after one more cup of coffee. Easier to shovel the few inches out there now, then do it all at once.
Ah, well. It is supposed to be snowy in Michigan in winter, and actually, we need it. That blanket of insulation in winter is why we can grow what we grow around here.

Just got done shoveling what fell last night and today - what a breeze compared to yesterday! Yesterday's snow is what they call "heart-attack" snow - wet, sloppy, and extremely heavy. Today's snow is the fun kind - fluffy and light.
So glad we got up the slop yesterday though! That and the cars de-iced. One of the neighbor's didn't, and saw him with a pick-ax trying to break up the slop that froze overnight, and not having a whole lot of luck with the mounds the plows left at the end of his driveway. It dropped from the 30s to the teens today, though the sun in starting to peek out. May be too late in the day to warm up the temperature, but dang, it's all sparkly and pretty.

Still snowing here - I thought it was supposed to be done by now; the Winter Weather advisory was over at 7pm yesterday. Maybe that was just the Lake Effect though - the snow now is falling straight down, not blowing from the direction of the lake.
Had my mammogram appointment early this morning. The mammogram lady...mammogramer? mammologist? professional squisher?...joked that my mammogram appointments are a good prediction of the weather - every time I'm scheduled to come in it's during a snow storm. Thinking back to past years, it seems she's right!
Tandem plows just came by a minute ago. I wonder what presents they left that are awaiting me at the end of the driveway?

Not much snow this Winter. Nothing that has stuck this year, so far. That isn’t unusual for where I live. We’re usually blessed with warm weather just in time for any precipitation. Not sure how deep the snow would be, if the rain had’ve been snow. I guess the snow compacts, so less snow than rainfall?
