I'm not an expert on those religions and their practices, but I believe the Amish and Mennonites practice shunning. I don't remember that Quakers do. There are different levels of shunning - generally the one portrayed in movies is where the community disassociates its self from a person or group. And yes, it can be a form of excommunication.

The book series is historical, so I'm sure things have changed within the religion since the 1700s. I Googled "Quakers Shunning" and saw the word "disownment." Didn't look any closer into it though.

It's raining like crazy here, and I have to go let Mom's dog out to tinkle, and feed her. So, laters.

I like it when it rains. I'm not a fan of misty sprinkles, but I like walking in the rain - so long as I have an umbrella or something.

Rain is nice. But not after two big snowfalls in a row that have melted and caused the river to rise.

If you are in a flood zone, that could be a bit of a problem.

I'm not . . . but driving along roads with flood water up to the edge of the highway is scary. The country road I live on goes into the 'bottoms' and that end gets flooded by the river when we have lots of rain and heavy snow. But I'm high enough that it doesn't/won't reach me.

I've been close to that - but it was on purpose. The flooding waters rose something like 28' and were literally just under a wood trestle. No one had seen it that high, ever, so lots of us went to check it out. Partly we were watching to see if the trestle would give out - it didn't - but the road going past the trestle did. Fortunately, I was on the right side of the road. Going around the flooding to get home would have been an extended trip.

Nothing says we can't have two seasonal threads going, and to me, it's winter despite what the calendar says.
Yesterday morning we had frozen fog; it burned off by mid-day, and it was a sunny afternoon. Heavy frost this morning is making it look like we've got a light dusting of snow, but there's no snow in the forecast until mid-January according to what Hubs said was in the long-range forecast (mid-January!!!).
With that said...
Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in the morning, sailors take warning.
The sky was bright red when I let the dog out at about 6:30 this morning. I wonder what we've got in store heading our way?

They had pictures on the news last evening of cob webs, frozen with fog. I don't remember them saying where the pictures were taken, but maybe it was from your area.
Jello, Cherry or Strawberry, or it's a sign that you're going to have to make a couple more arrangements for desperate people who missed your table.
"They" are predicting 80s here this week. We might as well be in Australia. It's warm there now too.

We're under another dense fog advisory this morning, but the temperature is a bit above freezing so I don't think the fog is frozen.
It looks very moor-like outside...or at least what I imagine the moors in England to look like in winter - no snow, but cold, wet, and very foggy.

I have no personal experience, but based on descriptions I've heard and read, I'd think that was London.

London is too big-city; the moors are too open. Somewhere in-between, I think, but definitely England.

I saw a video the other day of fog rolling in on a big city - in Michigan I think - it covered the city and sky scrappers. Supposedly we had fog this morning but all I experienced was overly warm and humid, and we're supposed to have the same tomorrow and Friday. I don’t get how they could call it fog, but they did.

It feels balmy outside this morning - warmish despite the breeze. Definitely not December weather here - it's supposed to get up to 60 degrees this weekend! The ice rink has been closed since nearly the first day it opened on Thanksgiving weekend; they can't cool the ice enough to keep it hard, and it's a sloppy mess.
I've got a Christmas party to go to this weekend, and it just doesn't seem right somehow.

Not here either. I don't know that we'll actually reach 80 today though - we were fogged in this morning and it took till almost noon for it to burn off.
I've been in an odd mood - even for me - but I'm just not interested in parties so I skipped all parties including the office festivities.

Awww. That kinda makes me sad - I thought you loved Christmas, and all the festivities that come this time of year.
I'm in an unusually festive mood. It's not that I normally don't like Christmas; I do. I've always enjoyed the season, but have just never been one to get all into it with gusto. Don't know what's different this year, but I'm having way too much fun.

It's that one more thing done that's doing it. Everything is falling into place and sooner than what you're accustomed to - that means less pressure to get things done, and more time to enjoy what's going on around you.
Still not winter here, although the results of the few cold days we had are showing up. Some of the trees have started showing some color - just in time for them to drop the leaves - but now the season hasn't been a complete miss.

We need for it to get cold here. Yesterday afternoon, Xena Sis and I were sitting on her veranda - without coats - drinking coffee, catching up after her trip to Mexico, and watching the birds pick berries off the trees in her yard. Robins! Robins!
When I got home, Hubs called me out to look at the hydrangeas next to the garage...that were breaking bud, and showing the beginnings of tiny little leaves.
Not good at all.
A little rain shower just past through a few minutes ago, complete with thunder and lightning.
This month is well on it's way to be the strangest December here ever.

I'm sure I mentioned it, but we had Robins in NJ all year. Mom loved feeding them - fat fluffy robins at her feeder could slow down dinner, especially when there was snow out side. On the other hand, I have yet to see one around here.
My roses have put on a growth spurt and are blooming too, but that's not totally uncommon. We had a very dry summer and they usually put on a fall display. Perhaps your winter is going to be mild - in compensation for last year?

I've been wearing shorts, and have the a/c on. We're expecting rain soon. The wind is trying to blow the house away. I remember when El Niño had it so warm in December, I had my windows open.

I remember you mentioning it. Here, it's pretty unusual to see a robin in winter. A couple of years ago, a couple of large flocks stuck around. One of the nature conservancy guys I talked to that winter said it was due to an unusually prolific fruit production year; there was so much available food in fall, the robins didn't get the signal to leave.
It's not that warm here, but it's warm enough not to need a jacket. My problem is I keep putting on my winter coat out of habit when I leave the house!
Pretty much a continual rain since yesterday afternoon - and cr@p! - the newspaper which came last night, even in it's plastic sleeve, is sopping-wet. Blah.

Ditto. I'm wearing short sleeved shirts to work because even if the morning is a tad cool, the afternoons are toasty.

The temperatures started dropping here yesterday; this morning it's a lot colder than it has been and a lot windier too. The metal stars I have hanging from the porch beam for Christmas aren't just gently dancing in the breeze like they have been - they look like they're twerking! (Is that even a thing anymore?) Just hope they don't become shooting stars and fly across the yard.

Well, if you're going to have them, winter would seem the better time - if there is a better time.
The weather guessers are saying tomorrow will be warm again, and the next few days after that will be some what cooler, but then the days after that will warm up again - just not to the 80s.
That's still a thing, depending on who's doing it. Some people's twerking is more watchable than others.

We've had a few snow flurries the past couple of days - not enough for there to be any accumulation though. I went outside as little as possible yesterday - it was 32 degrees, which isn't really cold at all, but the wind - oh-my-god, it was bitter!!!! It seems to have died down a bit this morning though, and though the temperature is lower, it feels nice enough to be outside without being uncomfortable.

I get that. There have been days when it was calm, but cool and wonderful, until I got the cycle on a highway. Cold air on the move can be exceptionally unfriendly.
The weather guessers are already saying we might have another day or two off cool mornings, but by Monday it'll warm up again. Christmas will be in the 80s - since I grew up looking for snow and shoveling sidewalks and warm fireplaces for Christmas Eve and Day, it doesn't feel right. I've got the real meaning of Christmas down pat, but it doesn't keep me from wanting a reminder of being a kid and all that went with it.
