The post about where she got the idea for the book was interesting....and a bit freaky!
No psychic abilities needed for BP to find her car keys in the woods - just some daylight, a bit of her and her sister searching, and the knowledge that she'd have to pay more than $100 to have a new key made using the car's VIN if she didn't find it was all it took.
Not so lucky with my diamond.

I'm glad she found it. I hope your diamond is in the house somewhere ... and you find it sooner than later.

I searched the house, but I was also everywhere the day I lost it - at the post office, Art Center, tried on clothes at a shop downtown, the beach, and everywhere in-between since I walked.
I've been giving some serious thought to having the ring reset (and resized too!) with the birthstone for our anniversary month, which is this month. August's stone is peridot - I'll have to price it out, but I know it'd be less expensive than replacing the diamond.
I'll probably find the diamond after I have the ring reset.

If you do find the diamond later on, you can put it in a necklace pendant.

Great idea, Joxie - although I'd say it's a pretty safe bet it'll never be found.
I can't believe it's Saturday already. This week has flown by! And I've missed out on all the worms - no early birds here. I've been a "Late Bird" (Hubs' pet name for me for as long as I can remember) every morning this week - today is no exception.
So this Late Bird doing a fly-by to say "Enjoy the day!"

Catastrophe has struck the household! Late yesterday evening, after all the shops had closed (leastways the ones that decide to open on a sunday that is), the kettle packed up and left the building. There can be no more tragic a sight than a Brit without an easy means to make a cup of tea, especially that first brew in the morning. Why do saucepans take three times as long to boil water, even with a lid on?

In my best David Attenborough style.
And so the hunter/gatherer returns. He has ventured across the savannah to the Temple of Tesco and returned bearing sustenance for his tribe. A new kettle and blades for a Quatro Ladyshave. These treasures will be welcomed by the group as they settle into their day.

I imagine being without a kettle in the morning for you would be akin to me being without a coffee pot!
In my best Janet Leigh/Pyscho/Shower scene style...
Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!
Glad for you (and Vox!) your hunt was successful!
I've been on a hunt today too...with no success what-so-ever. I'm trying to find a book that I read probably 10 to 15 years ago; I can't remember exactly. In fact, I can't remember exactly much about the book - the title, the author, or even much about the story; I don't even know why it popped into my head. I want to reread it though. It was a story (fiction? nonfiction?) about a group of women (sisters, aunts, neighbors maybe) in Central America (South America maybe) in which a hostile government regime (maybe a government takeover) was terrorizing the citizenry. Husbands, brothers were being imprisoned, killed, or just disappeared, and the women had to take control of their lives, and flee. Or something like that. I would probably recognize the title if I saw it, but all my searches on the Internet turned up nothing. I feel like this was a best-seller (and have searched best seller lists), won awards, or was otherwise highly recognized.
Any ideas? Anyone?

Oh-my-god, I found it!!! I knew I'd recognize the title if I saw it (or thought I would). In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. I've got to see if the library has it. Btw, I found it on this list - a pretty interesting list, actually: 1001 Books to Read Before I Die. www.paperbackswap.com/1001-Books-Read-Before-Die/list/788/

I know that not all of these are exotic pets. But it should be very hard to buy an exotic pet, and there should be charges and time spent in jail for those who set theirs free once they're tired of them, or don't keep them contained properly in their cages/aquariums. Florida doesn't have to worry about just alligators anymore, they also have to worry about pythons due to people releasing their pets. And alligators have been discovered in sewer systems, and in rivers ... and this wouldn't happen if it was outlawed to own them. Well, it would happen less frequently.

I usually only get hot flashes at night - or that's when I notice them the most; I have them during the day, but since I work outside all day in the heat and humidity, it'd be miserably hot even if I didn't have hot flashes. At night though, is when I feel those waves of heat take over off and on. I rarely cover up totally - I've found that if my legs are completely uncovered, especially my feet, as well as my shoulders, I don't wake up hot flashing as often. We have two different sets of covers on the bed, because most times, if I even use covers, it's just a light blanket draped over my torso.
It makes sense since body fat makes a person hotter. That's not the only reason for hot flashes though - my hair stylist was a perfect example. She was one of those women who got hot flashes for years after she went through menopause; they were so bad, she'd often have to stop cutting my hair to stand in from of a fan she kept at her station. She was in her 70s when she retired, but looked as if she was maybe in her early 50s - very fit, thin, and athletic. I wonder how she's doing now - she retired a couple of years ago, and moved out to Arizona to be near her daughter's family. The temperature out there is probably not doing her hot flashes any good!
I know the humidity plays a role also; I have them more when there's high humidity than I do when the humidity is low, they are more intense also. Coffee for me is also a factor, although I'm not willing to give it up!
One of the links you posted suggested than breathing exercises can help - I'm definitely going to give that a shot!
One of the first things you learn as a Mom, when your baby has a check-up every 3 months is to limit fruit juices to one or two glasses a day. Although they have essential nutrients, they have as much sugar as soda (which of course has no nutritional value whatsoever). Fruit juice is a healthy alternative to soda - but only in very limited quantities. Much better to eat fresh fruit - the sugar content isn't as high because it's not concentrated like it is in juice, and it's much more filling.

Hot Flashes: Lately, I've been getting hot flashes mostly at night. I used to wouldn't put my legs/feet out from under the covers, but I can do that now. I'm still having a hard time with not having the cover up over my ear. I used to have to have the covers up over my neck. (Someone told me about vampires when I was six.) Then when I was a few years older, a bug got into my ear one night and woke me up in a frantic state of being. So I keep the covers over my ears to keep out the flying critters while I sleep. This habit is extremely hard to break.
I've been getting hot flashes more during the day of late. When I'm cooking at the stove, when I eat/drink hot food, when I'm on the laptop, when I move around too much ... making exercising even harder to want to implement.
Lose Weight: Sometimes when I sleep on my side, my hip goes numb. A Google search says to lose weight. I've been getting skin tags the last few years. (I had one removed from my eyelid.) A Google search says to lose weight. And now, doing a Google search about hot flashes, and I get told to lose weight. Everything boils down to weight.
Fruit Juice: I drink one glass per day, for the most part, but on occasion I do drink two glasses. Then I drink water the rest of the day. I suppose I could add water to the glass, about a third of the way up, before pouring in the juice. I don't add as much sugar to my tea as everyone else around here. I guess I'm not a true Southerner. Perhaps it's something I picked up on when I lived in MI & MO during my childhood. I used to think that I hated tea, until one day when I had let my glass of ice tea sit until the ice had melted quite a bit ... and then I discovered I loved the watered down glass of iced tea. I add anywhere from a half cup to 2/3s a cup of sugar to my gallon jug.

Water is good for a body. I drink lots of it at work when it's hot out, but tend to forget when the temperatures are cooler, like they were last week, and then I drink more coffee than water. Not good.
I wouldn't think that one glass, or even two glasses of juice a day would cause a person to gain weight....depending on what type of juice, I suppose, and what size glass. There's a reason "juice glasses" are the smallest of the bunch.

It's a fairly normal dinner glass ... hmm ... maybe medium if bought at a fast food joint. I have on occasion used a tall 'large' glass. I fill them with ice, so that might make the medium glass more like a fruit juice size.
I haven't noticed any change in my eating habits/routine, so perhaps it's the hot flashes or my age. I've been told that it's easier to gain weight after a certain age, and harder to lose it. My sister and her daughter plan on going for morning walks. I offered to join them, but who knows how long before I opt to stay in bed. I have one of those small, mini-cyclers ... I got it out to pedal while I'm watching commercials. I don't do it every day, but I figure every little bit helps get my muscles a fair workout.

I think a serving size of juice is equal to those little single serving cans of V8 (I've never liked V8, but a co-worker drinks it at work), or those juice boxes for kids.
My doctor told me that same thing - women naturally gain weight after 50, and you have to work much harder to keep it off. It gets even harder during menopause.
And blah - I tried on a pair of jeans that I haven't worn all summer, and they are a little more snug than they were when I last wore them in spring!
Part of it, I know, is that it's been so hot this summer, that I haven't been as active in my spare time as I usually am - after working outside all day, being inside in the air-conditioning was more appealing that going for long bike rides or brisk, long walks.
Another reason is LX's cooking - she cooks most nights, and her meals are a lot heavier than how I or BP cook.
Now that it's cooler outside, I'll have to get back to biking and walking for exercise; although we go for walks after dinner often, it's strolling. And what better time to go on long walks and bike rides than fall, my favorite season!!!

Other than my bra, my other clothes haven't felt tight. It was my driver's license photo I took when I had to update my driver's license that tipped me off. My face was round. It bothered me. I've always carried extra pounds, but I have a limit in my mind of how much I will tolerate. Years ago, I had these huge belly rolls, and I bought a weight bench and started lifting weights. I lost quite a bit of weight. My grandmother was dying of cancer, and she moved in with us, and my bench got piled with stuff, and I never really got back into the routine. I even bought a Total Gym to get myself motivated. No go. I managed to keep my weight from getting that bad again, until now, it seems.
When my niece can finally move into 'her' house, she and her Mom plan on taking early morning walks. I'm not a morning person, but I told them to let me know when they start so I can join them. We'll see how long I stick with it. In the mean time, I've been walking to the mailbox and back ... for the dog, as well as for me. She misses going to Mom's every day. Sometimes I do walk up to Mom's and back. I take an umbrella with me. It helps keep the sun from setting off a hot flash. And it catches any breeze, and forces it to swirl around me. I wonder if my sister and niece will let me keep pace with them, or try and put distance between us.

Holy Cow! I'm gonna try this.
Why you should sleep with socks on
Other than helping your body stay warm, wearing socks at night also has extra benefits:
Prevent hot flashes: Some women find wearing socks helpful for cooling their core body temperature.

I doubt I'll get the socks the page recommends. But I did wear a pair of cotton footies in bed last night, and I slept all night under the sheet. However, I had done that the night before, sockless, so more testing needs to happen. I love going barefooted, so it will take a lot for me to put on socks while inside the house. I only put something on my feet if they're cold, and then take them off once they're nice and toasty.

HA! and Pfft! I always used to wear socks to bed, and even then, I usually ended up putting my feet on Hubs during the night to keep them warm without me even realizing it; he used to laugh about it. Since I started getting hot flashes, I can't stand having socks on my feet at night - even if the rest of me is cold enough to cover up, my bare feet are always sticking out of the covers, or hanging off the bed. If I cover them up, it's an instant hot flash.

During the past Winters, I had to put on socks to heat up my feet, and I always had to take them off during a hot flash. I put socks on when I went to bed at around 2:30am, and at 7-something a hot flash woke me up, and the socks had to come off. My feet were blazing way hotter than the rest of me. However, I do think I fall asleep faster with socks on, so I may keep it up until I have more data.
Speaking of data ... my iPhone's 'Health' app says I only slept 3mins. last night. How did it come up with that? Unless I play with the phone in my sleep, I don't see where it came up with that data. I'm thinking of getting one of those armband health monitors.

And last night it says I slept for 8mins. Ha! I don’t know how it figures these amounts up. A wristband would definitely be more accurate.

How does the app work - it determines how much you slept by the period of time your phone is inactive?

|
Post by Mini Mia on Sept 27, 2018 18:25:01 GMT -6
I've no idea. It has a bedtime option on it. I set the time for bed, and the time to get up. I'm assuming it goes by inactivity during that time period. Which is why the wristband would be more perfect, as it uses your heartbeat, I believe, to determine how much you've slept. My sister tells me hers tells her how much deep sleep she gets, and how much light sleep, etc.
Apparently, I got 8 hours of sleep last night.
