Your character is cleaning out a deceased family member's home and comes across old photos, negatives, film, etc. S/he sends them off to a company that will digitize everything and mail it all back to her/him.
What If ...
S/he is raided and arrested?
... ... ...
What was the reason for the raid and arrest? Does it have to do with the photos, negatives, film, etc.? How well does s/he know this deceased family member? What secrets did they hide?

I was watching The Devil Wears Prada when I got an idea. It stems from stories of women trying to make a career for themselves. They all seem to be the same. The career women seem to get very little, to no, support from others in their lives. Not even from other women with careers. So, my idea came about when I thought of the story if the lead was a male. How many male stories have men trying to make a career with little to no support? How would this story have been written had the lead been male? If the boss and most of the co-workers were male?
IDEA: Write two stories using the same theme/log line, same everything. Do a Twilight/Life and Death male/female & female/male switch. Show the differences of a story with a male lead, and a story with a female lead. People learn from example, so give them examples.
[Edit]
Include Erin Brockovich in this, as her boyfriend tries to get her to quit her job to focus more on him. How would that have gone had the genders been switched?

Ideas can't be copyrighted. Everyone and their uncle are legally allowed to use the same idea.
Legally Blonde (2001)
My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015)
Two totally different stories with a similar theme/premise/summary/idea. A young woman who chooses to follow an old flame across the country to try and win him back.
Everyone can use this idea as the basis of their story. And, unless one is plagiarizing another, no two stories will be alike. They won't have the same locations, the same characters, the same exact scenes, etc. So, there's no reason why you can't dig down to the basics of any story's idea/theme/premise/summary/etc. and use that to create a whole new story.
Take a good hard look at your favorite stories, and do a search for that story's premise/logline/summary/theme/etc., and use it for your own WIP. (Try and dwindle it all down to one sentence.) You can even tweak that basic idea to turn it into something completely different. You can change the genre, the sex of the lead character, of the other character/s mentioned in the logline/etc.
A blacksmith teams up with an eccentric pirate in order to save his love, the governor’s daughter, from the eccentric pirate's former pirate allies, who have taken charge of the island.
A pirate teams up with a blacksmith in order to save his love, the island chief’s daughter, from the clutches of the new British Governor, who has instated his dominance over the island.
A vampire hunter teams up with an eccentric vampire in order to save his love from the eccentric vampire's former vampire allies, who are now his sworn enemies.
A vampire hunter teams up with an eccentric vampire in order to save his love from the eccentric vampire's former allies, who are now seeking rebirth through the sacrifice of their kidnap victim.
You can tweak it any way you'd like. whooshorg.proboards.com/post/145100/thread

I saw a recent article on Black Holes, and it gave me an idea:
What if ...
A black hole swallowed up our solar system? What would happen if news got out that a massive black hole was coming straight at us? What if Earth was caught between a huge asteroid and a massive black hole?

Field of Dreams
What if . . .
. . . the family died in a house fire? . . . the family is in limbo?
... ... ...
. . . Terence Mann died just after Ray left him at his apartment? . . . Terence Mann had died just before Ray showed up at his apartment?
Can combine: Field of Dreams with The Others:

Video: A Banquet Trailer #1 (2022)
Use movie trailers to gather story ideas. Watch the trailer a couple of times, and then make a list of ideas of what you think the movie is about. Make a list of ideas from each of the short scenes within the trailer. What are the scenes about? What is the movie about? What direction will the movie take?
I have already come up with two story ideas so far. Both seem like they will work once I dig in and flesh them out. How about you?

Where do ideas come from? Here.
Where is the missing jet? What happened to the missing jet? What if there is no crash site? What happened that prevented there being a crash site? Could the pilot have been ejected on purpose? Could the jet be under someone else's control?
That's how you get ideas. Then create a pilot character. Create a character or group of characters that took control of the jet. Figure out how each act plays out.
That is how authors do it. And since ideas can't be copyrighted, anyone can take these questions and run with it. No two people will write the same story. Everyone will create different characters with different back stories. And in some cases, the story worlds can be based on the real world, or they can be fictionalized.
