I finished the book the other night. There were a few surprises toward the end, and also a few more things I'd had figured out before they were revealed. I liked the second half a lot better than the first half of the story, mainly I think, because Emma seemed to grow in character; she still thought too highly of herself, but little-by-little recognized her own flaws instead of so easily finding flaws in others.
I marked a spot in the first half of the book that I found ironic that it was spoken by Emma (in her thoughts), and was also an example of Austen's sarcasm: "...but certainly silly things do cease to be silly if they are done by sensible people in an impudent way. Wickedness is always wickedness, but folly is not always folly. - It depends upon the character of those who handle it."
She's referring to Frank Churchill...but it's ironic, because she does the exact same thing but doesn't necessarily see herself in the same light. Anything silly thing she does, she's forgiven for in her mind, because she views herself so highly.

I set my book down, and keep ignoring it. I _will_ get to it soon.
You know, it has been _my_ experience that when I don't like someone, or they get on my nerves easily, it's usually because they have qualities in them that I DO NOT LIKE IN MYSELF! So, Emma's comment seems to reflect that, IMHO.

Oh, good point! I think she doesn't necessarily think that way in the point of the book where she says it - she's got a damned high opinion of herself then, and feels that everyone else holds that same opinion of her, except possibly Mr. Knightly. He holds her in high regard but isn't afraid to point out her flaws, but she debates with him, and walks away feeling she's right and with the same opinion of herself despite whatever he says.
I think it's with the introduction of the Mrs. Elton character that she really comes to terms with how she regards herself and how she regards the people around her. Mrs. Elton is Emma times twenty - she's conceited to the point of obnoxiousness, and Emma can't stand her. It seemed to me only then does Emma tone down her high-and-mighty attitude.

I'm on volume two. Still got a ways to go.
I know Mrs. Elton from the movie. She seemed to try and force attention onto herself, which didn't set too well with Emma. Perhaps in the beginning it wasn't that Emma didn't like that quality in herself, but that she didn't like that quality in others because it distracted attention away from herself. Then perhaps later on she might have started to detest that quality in herself ... haven't finished the book, so don't know how in/accurate that thought may be.

I think she is definitely a person who gets jealous at times if she isn't the center of attention, or if someone is viewed her better or even equal. That was certainly true of Jane Fairfax - Emma was jealous of small things like Jane's musical talents which were superior to Emma's, which translated to Emma's general feeling of dislike toward Jane, and even at times, spreading gossip about Jane that painted her in a bad light.
I have no idea where you are in the book - my copy doesn't have volumes, only chapters.

Each volume starts at chapter one, so that’s no help either. Plus Emma is past the middle of a six novel book, so the page count won’t help either. When I finish with my next read I’ll post about the last scene to see if that helps you figure out where I’m at.

That's got to be one damned heavy big book! Or one with teeny-tiny print so small I'd probably go blind trying to read it!

I'll have to take a photo of it and post it on Instagram.

You can do very little with a computer. Well, you can do a wee bit more than you used to. On the computer you can look, read and comment. You can create an account and fix the settings. And now you can also see the profile’s “stories.”
To upload your images and videos, you must use an app on your phone. The videos are limited to one minute, so everything over a minute is cut off. To learn how to create stories, you can play around on the Facebook app on your phone, if you have it.
I have two Instagram accounts. One public and one private. It’s easy to switch between them in the one app. I’m hoping they’ll change their policy and let members upload images on their computers. I have more image access on my computer than my phone.

So, the Emma book discussion was a complete bust. My bad.
