Got it. Bottom to bottom, one inside the other. And no squishing!
Now, if only I could remember all this. Are you going to remind me when the time comes? Call the fire department to schedule in advance. Make sure they're the hunky type, please. Squishing is allowed.
Aw, poor Jo! But when the tears end, and disappointment eases, I hope the team can look back and remember this as a good memory. Making it to the state play-offs is quite an accomplishment, and though they didn't win, coming in second is something to be proud of!
What a thoughtful thing for your sister to do, Siren, giving you the Scandal album to make you feel better. (Trying to imagine LX and BP doing the same for each other, and hhmmmm.....not now, but maybe someday.)
ARGH! Don't even mention college football. Pfft. Have you seen what the Wolverines are doing this year? Probably not, because they aren't doing anything.....unless you count fumbling the ball, throwing interceptions, and generally tripping over themselves on the field, doing something. Oh, and losing. They are doing a lot of that.

I forgot to mention the final score: 1-0. Our team gave up one run in the first inning, and it came back to haunt them. But to lose by only one run to the #1 team in the state is terrific, especially considering it was a surprise that our team even made the final. They upset 2 higher-ranked teams to get there. You're right, Gams. It was a great accomplishment.
GG has always been a thoughtful person. Even now, she surprises people with very appropriate little gifts, usually saying, "I saw this and thought of you."
Your Wolverines sound like my Bears. Good grief, what a stupid loss yesterday! All they had to do was kick off, and play good defense to run out less than 30 seconds left in the game. But noooooo - our boneheaded coaches went for the squib kick, which was unsuccessful. Then, the Falcons (we lost to the FALCONS! *smacking head*) completed a pass long enough to set up the winning field goal. I read about this shameful exhibition. I'm glad I didn't see it. I'd have probably had a stroke.

Hello there, kat! Nice seeing you. Yes, kat it seems my niece and her teammates have already moved on, putting the disappointment behind them. She is now proud of their 2nd-place finish, and is ordering a patch proclaiming it to wear on the sleeve of her letter jacket. And she's already looking forward to spring slow-pitch softball season. She is the starting catcher on the slow-pitch team.
"HA" - I like that as a nickname! I'm glad you're enjoying the spring, Hippy. I imagine how beautiful it is where you are.

Hope it warms up soon!

We've had storms the last couple of days too, Hippy. Yesterday, at work, the hail started while I was driving the Gator out back, and came down so hard and fast, I barely see to drive, and Ouch! it hurt! In the past twenty-four hours, we've had hail, sleet, snow, rain, and were under an issued "gale-force wind warning". One of our pumpkins blew right off the porch! Waves have been reported to crest near shore at eighteen feet; a large number of feet, and no small feat for an inland lake. It was coincidence that yesterday, I read an article in Lake magazine that describes the destruction caused when Lake Michigan decides to show her muscle. Waves cresting at eighteen feet is amazing; waves up to forty feet is unimaginable. They are what caused the sinking of the Carl Bradley, one of Lake Michigan's worst maritime diseasters. lakemagazine.com/magazine/article.asp?articleid=LID-1017-TZSZ9-2008319

18-foot waves on a lake?? I can't imagine. That is an interesting, but sad, article.
Lovely, warm weather here - near 80 the last couple of days. But a few days ago it was downright cold. And my beautiful garden spider didn't survive those frosty nights. I checked on her each day as I left for work, and each day as I returned, and enjoyed her company this summer. I will miss her.

Aw, Siren...it's sad about your spider. This time of year signals the end of so many things.
The ghouls and goblins have gone into hiding again, until next year. Halloween is over, and I always think of this as nearing the end of autumn, although the calendar says we have almost two more months to go. The nursery closes after this weekend, but I'll stay on a bit to help with winter preparations.
This fall has been one of the most beautiful autumns that I can remember - the colors have been spectacular! All the way driving up north for our vacation, I could do nothing but stare out the van window taking in the screaming fiery reds, oranges and yellows. Closer to where we were staying, the colors became more subdued, entering the oak/white pine forest, and brick reds, browns, and pine green took over; still beautiful but in a more subtle way.
We reached peak color here last week - and though this week's wintry weather left a lot of trees bare, there is still an amazing blaze of color left. I can't decide which is prettier - seeing the color against a background of gloomy sky, as we did for much of the week? The gray skies seem to make the color stand out more. Or are the trees more beautiful glowing in bright sun? Yesterday was absolutely gorgeous! The autumn leaves; the sunny, warm, windless sky, turning into the perfect night for Halloween - the kind of day and evening that makes me wish Autumn lasted a whole lot longer.

We spent much of the day yesterday doing fall clean up in the yard. I emptied some of the annual pots, and got three of the beds cleaned out - the smaller gardens; I haven't tackled the bigger ones yet. I got the cannas dug, and the tubers are laid out in the garage to dry for a few days before I'll pack them in paper bags to store in the basement until next summer. Last year, I skipped the drying stage, and they got all moldy and mushy over the winter.
BP was disappointed when I pulled up the marigolds; they were still blooming beautifully. I cut off the roots, and she filled a vase with entire plants until it was over flowing with yellow. There was just enough room for a few asparagus fronds, which turn a pretty ferny golden-color in fall. The bouquet is a nice mixture of two seasons on the kitchen table.
Hubs cut the grass not to cut the grass, but to mulch the fallen leaves. I've had coffee out on the porch this morning, and the yard is covered in them again. He also worked on the snow-blower, getting it ready for when the time comes to put it to use. I hope it won't be too soon.

Stop screaming already. Sheesh, it's the middle of the night. You'll wake the cats.......not to mention, the plaster falling from the ceiling from all the happy dance stomping.
Go to bed; we'll celebrate in the morning with coffee and doughnuts.

Ah, Vox...the victory is not just mine, nor is it just Scrappy's. It's not even the victory of just one political party. It's the victory of an entire nation, and judging from the news clips I've seen, and the responses of leaders of different countries that I've read, it seems as if the world is celebrating along with us.
Let's all do the happy dance!

Monday Morning, and I don't have to go to work. Friday was my last day of the season, and my timing could not have been better. Last week was gorgeous here - the most beautiful weather for the first week of November there could be; our entire autumn season has been spectacular this year. Sunny, and in the high sixties all week, with plenty of color still on the trees because there was no wintry wind to blow them off yet. It was the perfect weather to end the work season, and the few of us remaining at the nursery busted butt to get everything done in record time.
All that changed Friday night. Sleet, hail, rain, snow - the entire gamut of precipitation hit over the weekend. HA! And I didn't have to work outside in any of it. Just a lazy, stay inside weekend spent putzing around the house, and watching movies.
More of the same today....the same kind of weather, that is. No time for lazing around; it's time to tackle all that stuff I've let pile up for a while. I've got dust bunnies to evict.

I'm glad for you, Gams. What a luxury - a carefree, cozy weekend! Where I'm from, we have our own term for "putzing around the house": piddling, as in "Oh, I just piddled around this afternoon - went through some old pictures, put on a pot of soup." In other words, it's aimless, and leisurely, activity. Piddling can also be a word for wasting time, as in, "I piddled around, and was late to the meeting." But yours sounds like the perfect sort of piddling - time spent at leisure, doing exactly what one wants to do. Even if that's doing nothing at all.
"put on a pot of soup" - mmmmmm, good idea on a cold, wet day like this! *sets off for the kitchen*

Shoot, there was no soup involved in my putzing this weekend. It was perfect soup weather here, too; wish I would have thought of that. I frequently piddlely-putz around in the mornings, and have all too often said, "I putzed around too long this morning, lost track of time, and was late." Your piddling is exactly the same as my putzing, Siren.
Unfortunately, the new puppy's definition of piddling around the house is entirely different.

"Well, piddlely-hee-hee, Vox."
That is my bad impression of Scarlet O'Hairy in classic wagging tail, "Dog Gone With Wind".
I'll get some pictures up soon.....as soon as she stays in one spot long enough for me to take a picture.

Snow! We woke up this morning to about two inches of Lake Effect snow! ACK! I'm not ready yet. There still too much yard work to do, too many leaves to rake, and I still can't find my warm mittens. And dang it, my cross-country skis are still up in the garage rafters.

Look for the ice scraper while you're looking for the mittens. I was thinking of you today when I saw the national weather report. Stay warm!!

We didn't get as much snow as predicted the other day, and I still haven't found my mittens, (they probably got stashed in a box with stuff totally unrelated to winter in the mad dash to get things washed when our basement flooded earlier this fall).
Still no skiing although my skis are down from the rafters and yearning to be used. I've had plenty of snow-time though; the dog loves the snow.
The heavy stuff is supposed to come today and tomorrow; we are under a Lake Effect Snow Warning. Lake Effect is weird; if the wind blows the right way get could get buried, and right now, it's howling up a storm.
I've still got daffodil bulbs to plant!

Post by Phalon on Nov 21, 2008 6:54:55 GMT -6
Whew! I got the bulbs planted yesterday just in time. Four dozen of them, and I just threw them in eight holes dug without rhyme or reason in a nice new garden bed. Marquetta, the pup, was a HUGE help in digging the holes - I couldn't have done it without her, (HUGE eye-roll). There was no planning involved in where I planted them; my goal was just to get them in the ground before the snow-storm hit.
And sheesh, did it hit! School's been canceled, no signs of the plows yet, and it's still coming down hard. If I'm not heard from here in the next twenty-four hours, send a St. Bearnard with one of those barrels they wear filled with something warm. Bailey's and coffee ought to do the trick. Thanks in advance.

Oh no! I think I have killed the hibiscus tree my mom gave me! I gathered my most treasured/fragile plants and brought them in before the hard freeze the other night. But somehow I left the most tropical of them, my hibiscus, outside. I am must sick over it! It looks so sad now, after blooming gloriously all summer. It even had one beautiful blossom on it when it froze. The leaves are all shriveled.
Gams, do you think it's a lost cause? The plant was well-watered when I left it out. It's about a 4-foot tree in one of those plastic containers from the nursery.

Post by Phalon on Nov 25, 2008 5:18:22 GMT -6
It's hard to say, Siren - I don't keep houseplants, and honestly don't know much about tropicals. I would guess if it was only one night, the hibiscus will probably recover. The shriveled leaves won't; they'll most likely dry up and fall off, but in three weeks or so, new buds will probably start to appear. Keep caring for it as you would normally. If it doesn't start budding in a few weeks, test the branches by gently bending them: if they snap, the tree is a goner. Or, with your fingernail, scrap just a itty-bitty tiny layer of the bark off - if it's still green and moist looking underneath, there is hope. Good luck!!!
Yesterday, a bunch of us from work got together and went hiking at a nature preserve. We have about a half a foot of snow on the ground already; add the big fluffy flakes that fell while we were hiking and it was an absolutely gorgeous scene. It's kinda weird, but I always get a thrill being the first to mar the snow with my footprints, and it was obvious from the lack of footprints that we were the first.
Part of the preserve was once a Christmas tree farm in the '50's - many of the trees never having been harvested. It was Christmas card perfect walking down the trail with the pines on either side, their snow-covered boughs dipping with the weight of it. Marquetta and Toby the Nursery Dog, had a blast running down the trails, and through the woods. They'd come out from under the pines, covered in snow from snout to tail.
We saw not only one - but two flocks of bluebirds in the meadow! Too cool - I consider myself lucky to see one of these birds, and have never seen that many together.
I'm glad we got our walk in yesterday; today it's warmer but the winter wind is howling fiercely - not something I want to be out in. Today looks like it's definitely a stay inside kinda day.

Weird weather for us here too, Yinyang. All that snow we had earlier - more snow than we've had this early in years and years - is gone. Thanksgiving day it reached into the fifties. It was colder yesterday, but there was lots of sun. The only snow left are the piles left by the plows.
I finally got out yesterday and raked leaves. The time between the bulk of them falling and our first snow was so short that most of them never got raked. Even the leaf sucker trucks that come through and vacuum leaf piles that are raked to the curb didn't get to them on time....the piles of snow are mixed with heaps of matted leaves that the plows churned up.
What a mess! Wet leaves are heavy, and are hard to rake. No hauling them up the ravine and out to the street this year though - I've got a big new garden bed on the slope, and I just heaped them into it, covering them up with a straw erosion mat. I pounded in what seemed like hundreds of landscape staples to hold everything in place. Instant mulch.....well, not so instant because it took me all day to do.
I've still got things to do to get the gardens ready for winter. I'm hoping to get to them today....we've got snow in the forecast again starting tonight.

I got some of the yard work done yesterday - another bed cleaned out, and Hubs planted five large boxwood that I saved from the brush-pile at work while I directed where I wanted them with typical furniture-moving "it looks good there.....no, it'll look better there" indecision. In spring, I'll probably decide they'd look better across the yard, but we just wanted to get them in the ground before winter.
And just in time - it's snowing again.
