Scrappy! Don't you know? They have tiny robots paint them on.

It's #3 now, Jox, right after a thread that asks how they get ketchup into the little packets and talks about fecal matter on M&M's. Scrappy, the little robots are made under a microscope, using needles like chopsticks to hold the little parts and put them together. The M's were originally sprayed on with a miniature airbrush under a magnifying glass, but it wasn't efficient enough and they would have had to charge $53 for a single-serving bag if they did it that way today. But somebody came up with the idea of making the little robots, and they programmed the first few to build even more little robots before disabling the first robots to prevent them from building their own army against us. These little robots operate with such speed and precision that they use just one robot per assembly line to paint on the M's, and one robot can paint the M's onto 560,000 of the little candies every minute. Thanks to this speed and precision, there is no need to have enough of these little robots in operation at any one time to become a threat. But just in case, the room where they do their work is hermetically sealed and they are powered by photonic energy. When a batch of M&M's is finished, they turn off the light that powers the robots so they can't leave the room when they open the doors. Then and only then, two doors open: One to pull the big bins full of M&M's out of the room, and another one to bring in more ingredients. Then the doors close, the seals are checked by inspectors, and they turn the photonic lights back on so the robots can resume their work. I hope this helps.
