After weeks and weeks of no rain, with statewide burn bans in affect, and more than 360,000 acres already burned by wildfires, parts of Oklahoma are now getting rain and even snow. In fact, they say there could be a significant winter storm tonight. By Okie standards, that could be a coupla inches of snow, or some ice. I realize that that's "stroll out to the mailbox in your shorts" weather for you Northerners. But for us, it's enough to make our already awful Oklahoma drivers even worse. We are just sooooo thankful some precipitation is coming our way, rain or snow.
We had a "Rain Rally" on local radio today, wishing the rain in. Here are some of the tunes that played:
I Love A Rainy Night - Eddie Rabbitt Like The Rain - Clint Black Is It Raining At Your House - Vern Gosdin Kentucky Rain - Elvis Bring On The Rain - Jo Dee Messina The Thunder Rolls - Garth Brooks Georgia Rain - Trisha Yearwood Let It Rain - Mark Chesnutt Smoky Mountain Rain - Ronnie Milsap
It must've worked. It's raining right now. But I don't remember hearing "Let It Snow" today! ~Siren

Siren, so glad to hear your area is getting that much needed rain.
I am still having a difficult time whining about winter this year. For every cold day we have, there is a beautiful, mild day.
Yesterday for example, we had a funeral to go to and were home by 3:00. It was 70 degrees and gorgeous. We ended up taking the dog to the river. He is a 9 mos. old lab that loves to swim and he had a great time. He's still worn out this morning.
Snow is a possibility around here in the winter and every few years we may actually get quite a bit of precipitation. Like Siren though, ice storms are our usual nemesis.
A few of you might remember the year I posted after we had gotten about 8" of snow and my son and I built snowmen. We didn't have anything to make the faces with so I got several cans of spray paint from the shed, different colors, and actually made some pretty cool looking snowmen.
Let it snow, let it snow, let is snow!

Siren, I've seen Oklahoma all bathed in red on the Weather Map warning of wild-fire high-alert areas for the last couple of weeks, and have thinking of you. Glad you've got your rain.
Seventies, Eroc!!! Are you azaleas blooming yet? Been a bit worried here, that things will start to bud - not nearly in the seventies, but still unseasonably warm. My almanac quoting neighbor says we are in for a heavy snow storm at the end of the month. Regardless if that happens - I don't know the accuracy of the Farmer's Almanac - it'd be devastating if things started budding here; it's just way too early.
We did have a few days towards the end of last week in which the temperatures got back down to freezing. It was nice roller-skiing. With the snow melt and all the rain we've had since, it's been mushy...and I like it hard and stiff better...the ground. Longer, smoother, more rythmic strokes, than the short, choppy ones, which makes for a better ride....uhm, glide....the skiing.
We took the girls ice-skating Sunday, and that was fun. Though LX goes frequently with friends, this was the first time we've been this year as a family. First time BP's been on skates too. Usually I push her around as she either sits or stands on one of those orange construction pylon things, but this time she wanted skates, (I think last year they didn't have any rentals small enough). Holding Hubs' hand, (who does not skate), she was cute as she did that tiny step Tim Conway shuffle that was discussed in another thread, stopping occasionally to pull lip balm out of her pocket and reapply before she continued around the rink. My little Suzy Chapstick, (rolls eyes), she is gonna be a primper, I can tell.

Thanks for the good wishes, ladies! We're very grateful for the wet stuff we got, but they say the burn ban will go back in affect this week. Tulsa is around 14" behind on rain for the year. I don't know about the stats for our area. But it's horribly dry.
Had a harsh, cold wind this morning, but went back into the 60s this afternoon - 70 tomorrow. If these mild temps keep up, Gams, I expect our plants will start budding. Just so weird, this warm January.
Yes, Eeee, 8" snow for your area or mine is rare indeed. But some northern OK areas got 8-10" Monday night. We got a couple of inches here, and it was so pretty. Clung to branches and leaves beautifully.
Gams, Braum's ice cream stores set up an ice rink downtown, and it did brisk business. And we had an ice slide, too. Apparently, it was pretty tall and very fast. Braum's has the best ice cream. German chocolate...mmmmm!
Gams, you keep talking about skiing that way, and you're gonna melt the snow. ~Siren

Oh geeze, Siren, that ice ramp sounds like too much fun. Did it lead into the front door of the ice cream store so you could grab a piece of German chocolate cake, (mmmm), on the way through. That would have made it all the better.
Just heard on the weather this evening...
For fifty straight days we've had some type of precipation...rain or snow or both.
In the last thirty-two days, twenty-five have been without sun.
Sounds depressing. Not so bad though, if you attempt to get out in it. I think staying cooped up inside makes it worse.

Lots and lots of sunshine yesterday!!!! And the temperature reached into the fifties. It made for an absolutely gorgeously perfect ski. (look at that adverb usage)
The kids played a made-up game of scooter soccer in the street. The birds were singing. Neighbors chatting on the sidewalk. Later LX and friends formed their first garage band: a violin, a saxophone, electronic keyboard, and karaoke singer. Sounds of summer and not winter.
I watched two little nuthatches steal fluff from the hole in our hollow maple out front. It was the same fluff I'd watched a squirrel stuff in there weeks prior. It made me laugh. HA! Squirrels are my gardening nemesis. Go Nuthatches!!!
Today: the usual. Gray and rainy.
I still wish for snow.

Well, hello everyone. I haven't been in in and inn for a while so I shall just rudely jump innsbruck, even though brooks can be quite brisk this time of year.
I got new sunglasses, or should I say shades? My old ones fell out of my pocket when I was taking my gloves out and got a big old ding in them. I got online at REI and found my same pair and sent away for them. They are slightly different frame color but nice. Spiffy even.
As for the weather here. Partly cloudy. We had a nice 3 inch dusting of snow Thursday and it is just sitting atop the other layers. I hope for more this week.

To borrow a phrase from Eroc, "The sun is shining."
Uhm...it was a minute ago. Where'd it go?
Sigh.

Still need some of that rain, Siren? We had another entire day of it, from morning 'til night.
It is snowing now, but the ground is too warm and wet for anything to stick.
Sticks with wheels; I rode them yesterday. Sunshine in the afternoon! Yay! If I can't have snow, I at least like to see a bit of the sun every now and then.

Oh lawsy, Gams, how we need rain!
Mmmmm, what bliss - a day of rain. I love, love, love rainy weather. Not a depressing, cloudy but dry day. But a drizzly, rainy day, with lovely, rolling thunder, and that delicious, wet smell in the air. So very cozy. And very rare here. And the trouble is, the timing is usually off, so I can't stay home and hibernate with my flannel jammies, a good book, and good music, so I can really savor it.
It's been so long since we've had real rain. So savor it for me, Gams.

Predicting 108 degrees here tomorrow, so you can send some of that rain and snow my way if you like, think we're gonna need it.

Hullo, Kat, how are you....besides hot. One hot dude.
We have much snow this winter. I love snow. I like skiing with the snow bouncing diamonds off of the snow. Snow, snow, snow.
I went skiing in deep powder in the trees. It was a good snow day. I skied by myself and seemed to really have some demons to purge because I skied nonstop, till I drop, bipidee bop.
Snow makes me feel safe and secure. It seems to slow the world down and make it nicer.

"One hot dude" is right, the sun is shining brightly at the moment, the hot north wind is howling, and I reckon it must be close to the predicted high of 108 degrees ............. is that snow on the way folks?

Love to send some, Katina. But I'm being quite selfish at the moment. Forgive me?
Woke up this morning to Scrappy's latest avatar; a picture taken from my front porch as I drank my coffee. Yep, all that snow and still warm enough to sit outside for morning coffee. Quickly melting. Sniff.
I longingly looked at my x-country skis which haven't been touched since before Christmas. Love the fun on the roller skis, but just something about winter that makes ya want to do it in snow.....talking skiing here, stay with me.
Inside all day though, and I didn't get to enjoy it. pfft. Damned commitments.

Yeah I'll forgive ya Lady P, just as long as you don't mind me being envious of your nice cool weather, it's 41.8 degrees here at the moment, which is around 110, and it doesn't get that hot here very often, thank heavens.

Thank heavens, indeed. I'd melt; I truly would. Now how can I be selfish and keep all my snow to myself after hearing that?
I think you are using that sympathy thing very well there, Katina. A quick squall of snow coming your way.
