I've never tried warm compresses... I take sinus meds, and use the steam inhaler when I can't take it anymore. I love the steam inhaler, but I hate staring at the table top for 10 to 20 minutes. Sometimes I use a mirror to watch TV... but everything is upside down.

Well, don't go bashing your head in; it leaves such a mess all over the place. Try this: a warm compress with a few drops of eucalyptus oil or a bit of eucalyptus spray. It works.

There's a new product... a tablet you place on the floor of the shower. When the water hits it it releases a steam of eucalyptus. I liked it. I remembered seeing a different product for vaporizers that contained eucalyptus as well. I plan on trying that too.

Blustery cold today: 9 degrees farenheit and snowing. I'm sure with the wind-chill factored in, it's much lower because it's howling off the lake; very angry sounding.
Dress warmly or you're gonna catch a cold. That is my Mom advice for the day; invaluable information passed down from my Mom. And moms everywhere from past generations since the beginning of time. Yeah, yeah...being cold has nothing to do with catching a cold. HA!!!!
Just read that recent research has proven once again what moms have always known: you can catch a cold from having cold feet. Sheesh, when are people gonna realise that Moms are always right?
The human lab rats in this research had to put their feet in buckets of cold water for 20 minutes and were found to develop cold symptoms three times higher than subjects who put their feet in empty buckets. Ya gotta wonder how many research dollars was spent on this study.
The reason for the colds with cold feet is "when colds are circulating, some people have the virus in their nose but no symptoms. Cooling the feet causes blood vessels in the nose to constrict, weakening defenses against infection and bringing on symptoms..."
And now you gotta think that Mom's advice to put Vics on your feet when you have a stuffy nose has merit also: it seems it would open the blood vessels in your nose, offering relief, no?
At any rate, the moral of all this is to listen to your mother; she is always right. And although my mom never told me to put my feet in an empty bucket, I will be sure to pass this advice along to my kids.

I can go through a winter without a cold ... until I stick my bare foot out onto the cold concrete steps for a brief second to retrieve something... all because it takes too long to go put on shoes. After a few times, I've learned my lesson. Now I've learned that whenever my feet get really cold to go take cold medicine right away to get a head start before the cold starts kicking in during the night. It works fairly well, and the cold doesn't stick around as long as when I wait for the symptoms to rear their ugly head.

Got a cold one here in Okieland. Currently 20 degrees, and our 3rd day of really wintry weather. Got cold Friday. The sleet started that night, then snow overnight, and more snow last night - probably a couple r 3 inches total. And the Okie drivers are out in droves, of course, driving way too fast, and causing lots of accidents.
If you want to warm up, Mia, just heat Dr. Pepper in a saucepan, and add some lemon slices. So very good. ~Siren

When I'm bunged up with a cold and can't breathe, I pour a can of diet coke into a saucepan with several slices of ginger root. I bring it to the boil, then simmer until it reduces by halve, then I strain it and drink the lot. Clears my sinus' out a treat. I'm sure it's the ginger and not the DC but hey, it tastes rather nice actually. XV

When I have a cold or sore throat, I pop a cup of pineapple juice with two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into the mircowave. The hot citrus soothes my throat, and the vinegar helps fight off the cold. I have a small jar of ground ginger in the frig... I may add a smidgeon to the mix next time.

I keep vaporizers going all winter to help with dry skin... I've seen eucalyptus products that can be used with them... I plan on getting some next time I'm in town. Plus I also have and use a steam inhaler, and I believe there is also a product that contains eucalyptus for it as well.

Hello all nose conditioners. Hope all the sinuses are treating you well.
I am going to talk about my adventures in skiing. I got out on a resevoir and did two blistering laps-blistering cuz I got blisters from them. Perfect conditions, though. This was only the second time for X-country on a resevoir, I think. The boinging sound of ice cracking freaked me out, though. Yikes. Makes me ski fast.

It's been a very long while since I've been out on the ice like that. The groaning and creaking of ice cracking; I hate the sound. As eerie as the feeling of being out there. (shudder)
Wow! It was bitterly cold here Saturday with fifty mph winds. I went down to the lake after running a couple errands in town, and with about twenty other people watching from their cars, (no one but a photographer had the guts to get out of their vehicles), watched the lake at it's angriest. Phenominal power it has.
I went roller skiing today. There was just a covering of snow left on the trail - not enough to effect the wheels. I was a bit tentative; it's been three weeks since I've been on skis deciding it was probably doing my arm more damage than good, which the doctor confirmed. But doc says ok now if I experience no pain. I took it easy; nice long strides, letting my thighs and wheels do most of the work. It felt good. I feel good. Damn, I needed that.

Oh my giddy aunt, we're actually trying to have some winter weather over here in Blighty. Woke up this morning and looked out the window to see a very delicate snow flurrie. When my Lovely Lady Wife Jane woke up she said, "Oh look it's snowing." And having heard my decidedly derisive snort in reply, she came back with an absolute gem. "Alright, Miss Canada, it's snowing....with an English accent!" I fell out of bed laughing!!!
Just to put it all in perspective, as we made our way to work, (merrily playing the Xena Licence Plate game as usual {LL24 CUK = Lucy Lawless Calls Underwear Knickers.}) there was a notice on the news that there will be a hosepipe ban in effect in London and the South taking effect from next week. We've had a series of incredibly dry winters and are in fact having drout conditions pretty frequently.
I think it's the first time in my 20+ years here that I've actually hoped for rain.
Ho hum, off to crack some more books. Looking out at another 3 flakes wafting past the window.

I have to laugh too, X-Virgin, not only at your Lady Jane's statement, (incredibly funny), but at your use of the word "hosepipe".
For years Hubs used that word when referring to a "garden" hose. I laughed, never hearing a simple hose referred to as a "hosepipe", and thinking it was one of those odd southern terms that pepper his now mid-western vocabulary. Eventually the hosepipe became a hose, although pop still remains "coke" no matter the brand. Ya can take the boy outta the south, but not always the south outta the boy.
Sunny here today, but cold. A very brief snow shower yesterday dumped less than an inch of the fluffy stuff, but it's gone now. Sigh. I am just not ready for spring yet.

Yeah... Me gots in lots of trouble fighting with the locals over 'soda' ... I don't call it soda anymore though, I use each's brand name. I know of a couple of places that serve RC's instead of Pepsi or Coke. It would be nice if it was more widespread. While Coke and Pepsi were fighting over which was the best, RC could sneak in and take the title.

Awake at seven this morning...Seven A.M and bright sunshine! A sure sign that winter's stay is starting to relinquish its hold. Hhmmm...not quite though.
My plan was to get out and roller-ski this morning while the ground was still frozen. Cold over-night temperatures quickly warm during the day and turn the hard trail into a path of sticky mud. Too difficult to glide in mud.
But dang, while it was pretty out and not too cold - in the high twenties - the wind was at gale force. Grrrr. My skiing hopes dashed again.
And now I need to get bundled in layers and layers to go stand on a drawbridge over an icy channel in those gale force winds, with a bunch of other bundled up blobs because with so many layers we all look like blobs; male and female indistinguishable from one another - no telling the A-cuppers from the D-cuppers from the no cuppers. We will all be cuppers; holding tin cups and begging for money to raise assistance for those who can not afford heat. And so, in my blobdom, I will imagine instead I am careening down the trail, dripping in sweat, and therefore will not notice how frozen my nose, fingers and feet have become. And I won't complain about the biting wind one bit - I get to come home to a nice, warm house.
(I will not complain, I will not complain, I will not complain).

Well, March is here. Didn't come in quite lionish, but definitely not lamb-like either. A lazy lion; one who'd rather be napping then roaring.
We had a wintery mix yesterday; snow off and on with periods of rain and sleet thrown in just to make things a sloppy mess. I met a friend for late coffee/early lunch and walked into the coffee shop dusted in white. By the time our visit was over, I wish I'd had an umbrella.
It's been a weird winter here; I think maybe almost everywhere. They were predicting it'd be a hard one, with lots and lots of snow. It definitely started off that way; the snow started Thanksgiving and kept coming until right before Christmas. Then it stopped and though we've had snow occasionally here and there, it hasn't lasted long; the ground bare the majority of the time. Lots of precipitation though - mainly in the form of rain. Sunshine too; that's a rarity here in the winter months, and we've had lots of sunny days this year.
Still hoping for that one last big blast of snow before I get the call that it's time to go back to the nursery. I'd love to dust the cob-webs off my cross-country skis just once more before they get hung up in the rafters until next year.

I've been out roller-skiing the last two mornings. Deemed myself well after they put me on the x-country ski machine at physical therapy, and graduated myself with honors. Still taking it easy. Sore arms; both of them; feel it in my lungs; my heifer calves are mooing, and my ankles, weak. Damn, amazing how fast it's lost when it's not used. Not lost though is my biggest assest, which seems to have gotten bigger assetting around on it for the last month or so. Grrrr; and that's sore too.
I saw a red fox this morning out there. Cool; it was so beautiful, jumping and nipping at a flock of tiny birds. I'd never seen one except dead on the side of the road.
This afternoon: snow. About four inches of heavy wet snow. Looks like I will get to dust the cobwebs off the sticks one last time afterall.

So....winter is winding down. What is the actual date? The twentieth? Twenty-first? I'm not sure. A spring thread? Do we need one?
I did get to go skiing earlier this week. Beautiful. Pristine snow; I was the first one out - no tracks other than little furry animals' and mine. I would have loved to have gone the next day also - I knew the snow wouldn't last - but had prior commitments. Argh.
And it didn't last. Forties and fifties all week. Sunshiny periods mixed with lots of rain. Rain makes for a trail the consistency of wet cement, and I couldn't even get out with the roller skis. I did a lot of walking though; I like to walk my errands when I can.
Took a walk with BP this morning and we saw crocus blooming! First blooms I've seen; my own are still just barely peeking through the dirt. The woman's whole front yard is covered in purples and yellows - such bright colors after winter.
Beautiful day today - no coat weather. Did a bit of yard work this afternoon - not much; mostly just played around. Cut the pussywillow branches to bring inside. The cats attacked the vase repeatedly, and if the pussycats don't leave the pussywillows alone, I willow be insane soon.
Tonight we all walked down to the beach. There is still a wall of ice along the shoreline, though only a couple of feet high now. The waters surrounding it remind me of a giant Slurpy, all shushy the way it is. We walked the pier - cool to be out there with the lighthouse glowing. The very end of the pier, past the lighthouse is still unaccessible. Dang, that is the best place to be; playing chicken with the waves crashing over top. The ice wall there though, doesn't look to have diminished much; the lighthouse still looking like an "ice castle".
Another blast of cold is supposed to coming in early next week; we may have to cover the blueberries which are starting to open their buds. Can't have a summer without being able to grab a handful or two of berries walking through the backyard.

Lovely, lovely descriptions as always, Gams. Thanks for taking us on that walk with you. I would love to see that ice-encased lighthouse one day.
Glad to hear you got rain, Scrap. We are badly needing it, too. Were coming back into town tonight, and smelled the smoke of more wildfires. That smell is becoming far too commonplace here.
Winter's end for us means college hoops. We road-tripped to Dallas yesterday to watch our Sooner women play national champs Baylor in the Big 12 conference final. Before 10,000+ screaming yellow or crimson fans, the Sooners prevailed. Our gifted freshman, Courtney Paris, had, I believe, 24 points and 26 rebounds. She was a sight to behold. Today we visited the Dallas World Aquarium and saw creatures feathered, furred, and finny from all around the world. A beautiful collection, with a remarkably natural habitat for every critter. The enormous, graceful manatee charmed us all. And we amazed to learn that gorgeous jaguars, like the one we saw, used to wander south Texas, and were seen in the wild until the late 40s. I can't imagine anything as exotic as that here in the States. We were wonderfully tired by the time we made it home. A terrific weekend.
