I do have to say, it is quite interesting living across the street from a loud, obnoxious talking bird. Since Siren mentioned her in the 'calendar' thread, here is a list of insightful, and often humorous quotes from Julia Child. Among my favorites.... “I think every woman should have a blowtorch.” ~ Julia Child Oh! the things I could do with a blowtorch! www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/3465.Julia_Child

Boy, Gams, that list was one great quote after another. Julia was a gem. And I am even more a fan than before. Man, I wish I had known her. ~~~~~~~ I heard a wonderful interview on NPR this morning with Iranian filmmaker Marjane Satrapi, discussing her film, "Chicken With Plums". www.npr.org/2012/08/18/158941794/marjane-satrapi-a-real-love-story-has-to-finish-badShe was so funny and smart, I put her on my list of fantasy dinner partners. I was so moved when she ended the interview his way. "I know my people and I know that despite whatever they can say, [the] Iranian people — I'm not talking about the government — they are the most pro-Western population in the whole region. They have always been. But ... in my life I've been very close to politics, and believe me the very small hope and belief that I had in the human being completely disappeared. It flew away. "You know, the cynicism that is in politics, it is not for my soul. It makes out of me an extremely bitter, cynical person that I hate to see in the mirror, really. And when I make a film like that, I will say to myself: People, they will watch it and they will say, this [is a] country that we think about only [in terms of] beard and veil and nuclear weapon. So in the same country, a man died because of the love of a woman. And if they understand that, I have done my duty. I can not do more than that. That's it."

It'd be very interesting dinner conversation, Siren!
I like her take on being happy all the time:
"If we were very happy we would be like cats — we would lick ourselves and then sleep and eat and probably we would be much happier. But we would be cats."
Sometimes, I think it'd be nice being a cat. Most times though, I'm glad enough to be human.

My mother worked for many years in a horrid factory that was hot in the summer, cold in the winter, and full of difficult labor and toxic substances. She said that one hot summer day, her dear co-worker asked her, "You do realize that we're working in this heat so that our cats can lie in cool air conditioning at home?" LOL! At times like that, I do envy cats.

On a little tag hanging on a pair of pants I bought yesterday:
"If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun." ~Katharine Hepburn
They're practical khaki pants, too - the very kind I can in which I can picture Hepburn knocking around her Connecticut home.

What a great quote from Katharine...and fun to find it on a pair of pants. Speaking as the mom of a teenager who enjoys having fun, perhaps beneath the quote it should have read:
Persons under age 18 need not comply.

I didn't know that teenagers were aware of "rules" - they think that people have "suggestions".

And you know what they say about suggestions....
"You can make whatever suggestions you want, but I probably will ignore them entirely." ~ Robert B. Parker, author of crime novels who is probably best known for his series about a private detective named Spenser. The character was the basis for the T.V. show, "Spenser For Hire".

Very pretty little poem, Siren....and I bet the leaf-motif jewelery is too. I love that kind of stuff - my very favorite earrings are fern leaves made of silver that I purchased at a botanical garden's gift shop.

Those sound nice - very simple, my favorite kind of jewelry. I found some pretty earrings and a necklace in Colorado last year, aspen leaves covered in gold. Sounds gaudy, I know. But they're actually pretty, and are a constant reminder of Colorado. Which I REALLY don't need, at this beautiful time of year. Makes me long to be there right now.
Still, it's finally cooling off here - high 80s and low 90s instead of triple digits. And right now, a lovely soft rain is falling. Yay!

No, no...I know exactly what you're talking about, because I have a pair of those gold-covered aspen leaf earrings too. I got them when Hubs and I went to Colorado for our 10th year anniversary. Unfortunately, the post broke off one of the earrings shortly afterward, but I still keep them as a reminder of the trip.
Here's a little poem about autumn leaves that I know I've posted in the past, but one I'm constantly rereading....because it's on a photo on the bathroom door at work.
Every little speaks bliss to me, Fluttering from the autumn tree. ~ Emily Bronte

Lovely, Gams. Here's another poem that evokes autumn..and spring and winter, too. It's actually a song lyric - Eva Cassidy's "I Know You By Heart", written by Diane Scanlon and Eve Nelson
Midnights in Winter The glowing fire Lights up your face in orange and gold. I see your sweet smile Shine through the darkness It's line is etched in my memory.
So I'd know you by heart.
Mornings in April Sharing our secrets We'd walk until the morning was gone. We were like children Laughing for hours The joy you gave me lives on and on.
‘Cause I know you by heart.
I still hear your voice On warm Summer nights Whispering like the wind.
You left in Autumn The leaves were turning I walked down roads of orange and gold. I saw your sweet smile I heard your laughter You're still here beside me every day.
‘Cause I know you by heart

I can’t think of anything that brings me closer to tears than when my old dog – completely exhausted after a hard day in the field – limps away from her nice spot in front of the fire and comes over to where I’m sitting and puts her head in my lap, a paw over my knee, and closes her eyes, and goes back to sleep. I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve that kind of friend. - Gene Hill

Great quote, Stepper, for a dog-owner, or anyone who has known the love of a pet. I was curious about the author, so I drilled. Gene Hill, along with writing a number of books, wrote a column titled "Hill Country" for Field and Stream for 20 years, before passing away. From what I gathered from the drill, his column was, and still is, a treasure to many. Here's a sample you might enjoy - it's about Texas cuisine: www.fieldandstream.com/articles/hunting/2010/04/hill-country-texas-digest?page=0%2C0

I had no idea! What a serendipitous discovery! I live in spittin distance of the Hill Country. Thanks! By the way, the article about food is accurate. Except up near Austin. Because of the college kids the food is pretty bland.

Glad you enjoyed it, Stepper. Not being a Texan, I wasn't really sure of the piece's accuracy, but I thought it was pretty funny.

When you 'pay it forward,' make sure it's a positive movement, and not a negative one. Nip those in the bud. Have them stop with you. Plus, 'pay it back' once in a while. Donate to the school, church, classroom, etc. that was the stepping stone that got you where you are.

Thanks Phalon. That thought came to me one day in WalMart when I spoke to a woman in the cereal isle and she growled and stormed off. A few moments later an elderly gentleman asked me for help in finding a cereal. I did. Then later realized that sometimes when someone is rude to me I get angry and am rude to others in return, but I hadn't done it that time. So that's when I realized that negativity can be passed forward too, and that I was so glad I let her rudeness stop with me. Where would it have ended had I 'passed it forward?' Could some of the horrible things that go on in the world be due to no one stopping a negative action from moving forward?
This happened years ago, and I blogged about it on several of my blogsites, but they get very little traffic. We get lots of traffic here, so why not see what influence the quote can have?
