And so it begins...
We watched the Opening Ceremonies last night, and as with all Opening Ceremonies, it was, I thought, a spectacular show uniquely representing the host country. It was long though, as with all Olympic Opening Ceremonies, and I dozed here and there, as I usually do when watching. Hubs and BP cite the Parade of Nations as the most boring part, but it is the part I like the best, and I'm always wide awake during the countries entrance into the arena. It's where in the show you get to hear the back-story of many of the participants in the games, and gets the most lively discussion within the household as we talk about the different nations competing. It was sad last night, I thought, that the Indian participants had to walk with the Olympic flag rather than the flag of India due to the IOC revoking India's Olympic membership due to corruption within that country's Olympic committee. The Indian athletes had to enter has "Independent Competitors" rather than competing for their country.
Prior to the ceremonies, I caught bits and pieces of Olympic news throughout the week. Watched some of the speed-skating trials: for the American women, Sugar Todd seems to be a big name in long track. At least it is with the announcers..."Shhhhug-haar Taahhh-uhd"; it's a fun name to announce, it seems.
Big news this week here is Shaun White. Not that he pulled out of the slopestyle event to concentrate on half-pipe, which seemed to evoke a lot of controversy going so far as the Canadian snowboarding team calling him a coward. Oh no, not that...it was lovely-locked Shaun's hairstyle that had the girls (and me) discussing him heatedly prior to the competition. I'd seen it prior, but LX was shocked and bewildered when she first saw it, and texted me her extreme disappointment (but he was soooooo hot with his long hair!!!). BP will miss the long hair, but overall the new doo gets a thumbs up from her. I like it too; he went from adorable to handsome, I think....makes him seem "all grown up".
All grown up too, is Apolo Ohno, who makes his appearance at the Olympics this year as a commentator rather than a competitor. Another Winter Game hottie. Unlike Shaun's hair, Ohno still has his personal "flag" - that thing that is uniquely his: the weird goat-like thing on his chin. Interesting that when I clicked on this thread in the Quick Links, which took me to the first page, discussion about that goat-beard was front page news here 8 years ago.
It seems some of us (me) never grow up.
And that is this morning's ever-so-news-worthy Olympic highlights from me. I have yet to watch an event.
