Sorry to interrupt. Katina, I don't need to call an ambulance for you, do I? Hope not. Sheesh, Scrappy, go a little easy on people, will ya?
I cut my Black-eyed Susans down today. It was time; only their eyes remaining; golden petals shriveled and fallen. Ah…summer is over.
One last fling of summertime; we went camping this past weekend and had the best time. The weather, after a rainy start on Friday, was perfect; sunny and seventies during the day, though a bit chilly at night. But that’s what campfires and sleeping bags are for, no?
Went to a state forest area, with three lakes, a river, and miles and miles of snowmobile, horseback riding, mountain bike and hiking trails. Hubs pimped my glide for the occasion, (like he pimped my ride when he had my truck painted, pin stripes added and shined up my big chrome wheels). BOLL and eye roll at the same time. Ouch; that hurt. He cleaned the gravel dust from my boots, shined up the skis, checked the pressure in my tires, added air and Armor-All-ed them. Sweet, but why? After what I put them through while camping you’d never know.
Out of the twenty-two miles of trails, I covered about fifteen of them on the roller-skis. Fun; so different from the groomed six feet wide trails at home; these were narrow, full of tree roots, rocky in places, and hilly in others. Got a lot of fast glide in, but definitely had to be more careful than at home. Different kind of terrain; I had to do some sidestepping down the bigger hills, and learned that the all terrain wheels work through horse dung just as well as dirt and gravel. Dang, horses are not modest at all; never even trying to make it to the bushes.
The lakes were beautiful in the cool mornings; mist rising from them as the sun rose. And the moon!!! Did anyone see it Saturday night? We were down at the beach, and I had my back turned towards the lake – just for a minute – and when I turned around, there it was, already over the tree-line. It was the harvest moon; huge and perfectly round, like someone hung a bright-colored ball in the sky. I was trying to think of what color would accurately describe it, and I couldn’t; it was just that beautiful. Later that night, sitting in front of the fire, it came to me; it was exactly the color of flames.
We also took a twelve mile canoe trip. Too fun; I hadn’t been canoeing in a long, long time. Saw lots of turtles; turtle families actually, sunning themselves all piled together on fallen trees and half-submerged logs in the river. And lots of those too: Logagaters; they eat canoes if you’re not careful. We also saw a couple of cranes, and a family of wild, (but DNR banded), swans. And yes, the babies are ugly ducklings; gray and mottled looking – but big.
Sorry if all that is a repeat for some of you, but damn, it was fun.
And so, this is my last post in this thread; it was fun reading what everyone did this summer. Falls starts tomorrow, (I think). Fall is my favorite, and this weekend one of my favorite things to do in autumn; apple picking and hayrides in the orchard.

But yes, I most likely will, just because it's my favorite season.

Oops, I didn't see you there earlier, Katina.
Things are great in my neck of the woods; saw it this morning actually....the woods when I was out roller-skiing, but no necking was taking place.
It is not Echidna mating season, I guess.
Later Katina, and enjoy your day. I am off to bed now.

Nope, next month is Echidna mating season P, it only lasts for seven days, so you can imagine the frenzied activity as those little [ but dangerous ] insectivorous monotremes rush about doing, well, whatever little insectivorous monotremes do during mating season.

Next month is Enchilada mating season, and I can imagine the frenzy; hot stuff I'm sure. And for only seven days out of the entire year? That would suck. But then again, that's what Echidna's do, so to them, I suppose all is good.

Yep, best to stay away from the woods during that period, it's a bit hectic. At least the ants get a respite for seven days, the Echidnas only have one thing on their minds during those seven days, and I can tell you it isn't eating.

Poor little things. First only seven days of mating, and now you say there is not eating during this period. Not even snacking in-between events? What stamina, and you gotta wonder how they can keep it up, (and yes: intentional bad pun there).

Or some species of Spider that end up as an entree for the female after the event. Oh well, at least they get to die with a smile on their face I guess.

So I thought I should put up another installment before I forget altogether what exactly it was we did on this trip. Here goes... Right after the Fantasmic show there was a fireworks display. I LOVE fireworks and was kinda disappointed we didn’t venture out into the 110 degree heat this year to see them on the fourth of July. So to say that I was enthralled was an understatement. Though I wish we had better seats. We had decided to stay where we were and some of the better displays were blocked by huge trees on the Tom Sawyer Island. But I figure that was better than trying to fight the 2000 people who were all crowded around attempting to see the same thing. At least we were next to the water where it was cool. So after the fireworks we decide to venture a little further into the park. Mostly because at this point everyone with children were heading for the front gate. 10pm and all the little rug rats must be getting tired by now. Perfect opportunity to just cruise and wander. So we headed through Frontierland. Passed by Thunder Mountain and decide to giv4e it a go. It’s been years since I’ve been on it and apparently had forgotten what it was like. YEE HAW! Is all I can really say. And even better in the near pitch black dark. Liked it so much, I ran around to the line again and did it again! Becka though, stood on the bridge and watched me scream my head off for the split second she could see me. Twice. LOL Ok blood’s pumping now and I’m all jazzed up. What better way to ruin it? IT’S A SMALL WORLD!!!! ACK!!! Remember I said Becka had never been to Disneyland? Well apparently she didn’t believe me when I tried to explain about this particular ride. She’s tugging on my sleeve and begging. I’m telling her you’ll hate it. *sigh* Can’t have anyone pouting in Disneyland. “Ok...but only because it’s you and only ONCE.” So we head in that direction, but I have a plan. And it was a cunning one. Distract her enough along the way and she’ll forget about it hopefully. So along the way to “the” ride we come across a few of the smaller ones. Kiddie type rides but who cares. The Alice in Wonderland ride was pretty cool. The graphics and pictures they had were top notch. Especially liked the florescent glow in the dark paint effects. After that we hit the tea cups. Love this one. The music all the colors just too cool. Like I said before the attention to detail is phenomenal right down to the little puffs of steam coming from the teapot. So some more wandering around checking out the shops and it can’t be avoided anymore. Mostly because the damn music is being piped in and you can hear it from a block away. I firmly believe that this ride is involved in some horrid brainwashing government conspiracy or experiment. Not only do we have to stand in line and listen to the music while we are waiting, but it’s also the longest ride in the park, lasting upwards of 6 hours (ok so a little exaggeration but it definitely feels like it). And we have to listen to the same damn song for the whole ride in like 20 languages! If your kids can’t sing this song in like six languages by the time the thing is over then you need to have their ears checked because something is wrong with their hearing. Sorry, I’m ranting. So, we stand in line for 20 minutes to ride a ride I’m sure Becka will hate on top of which there is some guy in line behind us who thinks he is god’s gift to everyone. You know the type, talks loud enough about bullsh!t so that everyone can hear, like anyone but him cares. And no kidding he kept adjusting himself every five minutes. Sure he was good looking, but you know what? Cute only counts for so much. Attitude makes the man. Anyway, we finally get on the little boats and they give you the spiel before sending you on your way, you know, keep your hands inside, watch your kids, yadda yadda. Well someone should have mentioned moronic adults. Cause the guy, yes THE guy kept standing up! Ok so not really dangerous since the water is only three feet deep but come on, still annoying. Like the music isn’t bad enough! And yes I did have thoughts of tilting the boat enough to tip him out, but my better judgment got a hold of me. For a change. So finally the ride is over and we get out. Becka turns to me and says something to the effect that she wished she had listened. Oh well. So it’s almost midnight now and the park is going to close soon but we decide to hit one more ride on the way out. The carousel! YAY! Beautiful. Wish I had all the grand words to describe it. Even if we hadn’t ridden it, it still would have been cool to just stand there and stare at it for a while. Always something new to see as it spins around. And oddly quiet. As though even the children understood the reverence of the thing. Though it could have been due to the late hour. All in all a great day. And totally exhausting. After that we headed back to the hotel. Had our showers and went to bed. But...another day to explore was on the way and so we went to bed excited. Next installment ...DAY 3

I noticed the new seasonal pest isn't up. Here is your summertime activities place. [Edit]
I merged two Summer threads, and this is the first post in the second thread. "Summertime, you just don't know" is the second thread's original title, which was kept in the merge. The first thread was titled as "Hot Stuff: Donna Summertime Activities". ~*~ Joxcee ~*~

It is summertime already? My calendar says about two more weeks until the summer solstice. But as any kid will tell you, summer begins on the last day of school, and today was that day for my girls.
BP's preschool graduation ceremony was this evening. It was cute - pint-sized graduates in little caps and gowns singing "kindergarten, here we come" type songs and such.
LX - my self-imposed-perfectionist-in-every-area-but-slob-around-the-house-just-to-drive-her-mother-insane child ended fifth grade with another straight A report card.
It all called for a celebration - the first visit of summer to the ice-cream parlor downtown. Mmmmm.
Down the hill, sailboats coming up the channel as the sun set over the lake just beyond the lighthouse. A typical summer evening scene.
It's definitely summer, no matter what the calendar says.
"The summer that I was 10 - Can it be there was only one summer that I was 10? It must have been a long one then." ~ May Swenson

Oh, a summertime thread, very timely, as it's been so cold here the last few days it would bring a tear to a glass eye. The temperature peaked at a glorious 12 degrees yesterday [ about 52 in your lingo ] and don't think it's any better today, needless to say the old heaters getting a fair work out.
So keep those summer posts coming, at least I can live vicariously through them, and pretend it's warm down here.
Of course a bit further down the track when summer finally pokes it's head around the door here, I'll be whining about the heat and asking for posts about snow covered fields and grey, leaden skies.

"grey, leaden skies" - what nice imagery, katina! Well done! 52 is cold? You sound like my friend Jenni, who lives in Houston. If it gets below 60 there, they break out the jackets. And such humidity they have! The air feels thick. Yuck! Could be record-breaking heat here this weekend. We hit upper 90s today, and could see 101 tomorrow. Did that help warm you up any, katina? I hope so! Gams, that little poem from Swenson was lovely. And so true.

Yep, got a narrow tolerance when it comes to weather Siren, anything below 65 is a cold snap, and anything above 75 is a heat wave as far as I'm concerned. ;D
And yep, that's warmed me up no end, actually had to go and turn off the heater, as I was breaking out in a bit of a sweat, so thanks for that, keep it coming.

I like your sayings, Katina. "It's been so cold here the last few days it would bring a tear to a glass eye." Something new; I've never heard that prior. Better than those old cold witch's tit, or well-digger's @ss ones.
And we reached a high of 57 degrees today! Poor kids dressed in shorts this morning; damn those weathermen - always wrong. I did too, actually, but had a spare pair of jeans in the car, and changed when I got to work.
And this is summer? Pfft.

I've never been pregnant. But moms tell me that being pregnant in the heat of summer can be pure misery. Chickens must not know this. At least 4 hens in my mom's flock have decided to set - sit on eggs till they hatch them. It gets brutally hot in the hen house this time of year. But there they sit in their setting trance, beady eyes out of focus, heads drawn back between their shoulders, for the most part, going without food and water. If you cage hens who are "setting", and keep them away from the nest, their urge to set will often go away. Daddy plans to cage all but 2 of the hens today, to break their spell. He's penning up "Fidel" with her eggs today, and is waiting to see if she keeps setting. If not, "Ephiny" will be penned tomorrow. Eggs often spoil before they hatch in the summertime. But Daddy's hoping we get lucky.

Interesting stuff about the chickens, Siren; I never knew. Eight months pregnant, the hottest summer on record in years and years, and I remember that "trance, beady eyes out of focus, heads drawn back between shoulders" well, (except the going without food part. Pfft). It was the summer of BP. And the summer we had central air installed.
Was out at Marathong Friend's, (soon to be Triathathong Friend; crazy woman), this evening, with the girls. We caught frogs - hundreds of tiny just-turned-from-tadpole frogs, no bigger than the tip of your pinky finger. The adults were easy to catch too - much slower than you'd imagine. Is it cooler temperatures of late making them slow? Or is it that beady eyes out of focus, heads drawn back between shoulders new parent trance, that I also remember well that had them dazed?
