'Chief' Makes Strong Showing on Super Tuesday
(Wednesday, September 28 03:56 PM)
LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) ABC's new drama about the first female president drew big poll numbers in its premiere, but we look to be some distance away from declaring a clear-cut winner for its time period.
"Commander In Chief," which stars Geena Davis in the title role, debuted to more than 16 million viewers Tuesday (Sept. 28), winning its 9 p.m. timeslot handily by that measure. But all of the Big Four networks could claim some success in the hour, which is shaping up as one of the most competitive in all of primetime this season.
The "Chief" premiere averaged 16.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen, giving it a fairly comfortable overall victory in the hour over FOX's "House," which drew 13.4 million people. It was the biggest audience for any show on the night and the best drama-series premiere on a Tuesday in five years, ABC says.

It was "House," however, that took the crown in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic with a 5.1 rating. ABC, CBS and NBC all tied for second in the hour at 4.3 as "Commander In Chief" skewed somewhat older (it scored a 5.8 rating among adults 25-54).
NBC, meanwhile, saw its comedy "My Name Is Earl" hold up fairly well in its second week. While the increased competition caused a fairly sizable drop in viewers (11.4 million vs. 15.2 million last week), the show still won its half-hour among adults 18-49 with a 5.1 rating -- substantially better than the network's time-period average last season.
At CBS, meanwhile, the debut of "The Amazing Race: Family Edition" declined some compared to recent premieres. Its two-hour premiere drew 10.6 million viewers, compared to about 11.8 million for each of the previous two incarnations of the show. Still, its first hour managed to tie NBC and ABC among adults 18-49 and, in another glass-half-full scenario, improved over the performance of "Clubhouse" in the time period last year.
The hour's only real casualty was the premiere of "Sex, Love & Secrets" on UPN. The twentysomething soap set in L.A. hipster enclave Silver Lake was barely a blip in the Nielsens, drawing fewer than 1.5 million viewers. The WB's "Supernatural" came in at 4.7 million viewers, not far off the average of 5.3 million for its first two episodes.
