Inside with Real-Life Ghost Whisperers
October 13, 2005
JAMES VAN PRAAGH, JOHN HOLLAND, PAM CORONADO and JEFFREY WANDS all have something in common: They are go-betweens for the living and the dead, and as such, they are the subject of a two-hour A&E Network special "Mediums: We See Dead People," airing Friday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m.
For the special, Van Praagh, who is probably the best known of the psychics, as CBS' hit series "Ghost Whisperer" is loosely based on his life, does a reading for RENEE BAILEY, a woman he has never met and knows nothing about.
Bailey's daughter MISSY died after elective surgery, and Van Praagh is able to give comfort to her. "Missy was not in pain," he says. "I think there was internal bleeding. I think there was wrong medication. I am just the messenger."
According to Van Praagh, who recognized his gift as a child, the movie 'Ghost' is pretty accurate, but the messages he receives from the other side are not as clear as those that PATRICK SWAYZE's character passed on to WHOOPI GOLDBERG.
"Our research strongly suggests that [Van Praagh] is actually receiving communication with the consciousness and energy of the person who died," says Dr. GARY SCHWARTZ of the University of Arizona. "The simplest explanation that accounts for the largest amount of information is the survival of consciousness after death."
Van Praagh is on a mission to help people understand that, so they can evolve to the next life without fear.
"The dead have a lot to teach us," he says. "The dead always leave gifts behind. We have to be open to receiving them. We are all connected in some cosmic way. We are all one."
"Mediums: We See Dead People" also follows John Holland to a restaurant in Little Italy where he "reads" the death of mobster JOEY GALLO more than 30 years ago; we visit the home of psychiatrist RAYMOND MOODY, who is the leading investigator of what he calls "life after life" and watch Pam Coronado as she works with police to help solve crimes.
