Here's a story I shared on the "Off Topic" board:
Xena had a big influence on my oldest niece. Jo has always been a big girl, not only weight-wise, but height-wise, as well. At age 10, she was taller and bigger than almost anyone else in her class, and was understandably self-conscious about it. Add in that she was a reserved child, not one to talk about her feelings. While Jo and her sis were visiting my house one weekend, I flipped channels, looking for something to amuse them while I got my makeup on. I happened across an episode of "Xena", which I had only seen a time or two at that point. I knew it had a lot of action and girlpower, so I left it on for the girls to watch. Jo was instantly smitten, and became a huge fan. She began collecting everything Xena-related she could find, drew pics of X & G & Argo, named her bicycle "Argo", and even wrote sweet little fan fic. Her Aunt GG and I put together a splendid Xena birthday party that year. And Jo would leave messages on my answering machine, reminding me to watch the Xena reruns on the "Oxygen" network. In part because it gave me something to talk about with my niece, I started watching the show faithfully, which led to me becoming a big fan. And I'll always be grateful. Watching Xena led me to the friends I have found here and on the dearly-departed Oxy board. And it broadened my perspectives in other respects. But what I want to emphasize here is the influence the show had on Jo's self-image. After seeing big, strong Xena as the hero and savior on that show, Jo reveled in her own strength and size, and has ever since. Xena also helped her cope with getting lice at school. When her mom broke the news about the critters, Jo shrugged and said, "Xena had 'em." LMAO! And she sat stoically, as Xena would have, through all the de-licing. So even if I wasn't a fan of the show, I will always be grateful for the impact Xena had on my niece. I think she's a happier, healthier kid today because of it.

This is not really a life changing Xena Moment, but I had a Xena experience yesterday at work. At lunch we were all talking about new movies - what's coming out soon, and what's being made for future release. I mentioned that Renee is making a movie up in Manistee this month.
A snide comment from one of my co-workers went something like, "Oh, another of those cheesy B-movies. It's good to see they've (meaning Lucy and Renee) advanced their careers since Xena."
One of my other co-workers, (the newest to the nursery; she's in her second year), replied, "I think they were both great as Xena and Gabrielle."
Me: "You watched Xena too?!"
Paul: (eye-roll)
Coco: "Yes! I never missed an episode."
Paul: "Oh god, here we go again."
We're planning a Xena Marathon soon; Paul's not invited.
