'Survivor' still manages to surprise
By JOHN POWELL -- JAM! Showbiz
The 'Survivor' game has ended for tough cop Amy O'Hara.
Reaching deep down into their bags of tricks, the producers pulled out two more firsts on last night's episode of 'Survivor'.
Usually it is against the rules for one tribe to visit the other camp for an extended period of time yet on 'Survivor Guatemala' not only did Yaxha row up to Nakum's dock but they also invited them back to their camp for a pool party of sorts. Though it wasn't shown one gets the feeling that either Yaxha asked permission from the producers to do so or the producers suggested the trip in the first place. With some reservations, Nakum accepted and both tribes partied as much as one can do so in the mosquito-crawler monkey-crocodile-infested jungle of Guatemala.
In another shocking switch-up, Yaxha got new buffs at the conclusion of their Tribal Council. Host Jeff Probst officially declared the merger of the two tribes and ordered Yaxha to paddle to Nakum's camp and break the news to them in the middle of the night. Wakey. Wakey. Surprise. Surprise.
Before Probst made the announcement though Yaxha lost another member by voting out tough as nails injured cop Amy O'Hara thus reducing their already dwindling tribe to just four members while Nakum remains six strong heading into the merger.
The Survivors at the start of the broadcast were:
Yaxha Tribe
1. GARY HOGEBOOM.
2. AMY O'HARA.
3. BRANDON BELLINGER.
4. DANNI BOATWRIGHT.
5. BOBBY JON DRINKARD.
Nakum Tribe
1. STEPHENIE LAGROSSA.
2. LYDIA MORALES.
3. JAMIE NEWTON.
4. CINDY HALL.
5. JUDD SERGEANT.
6. RAFE JUDKINS.
Nakum Tribal Happenings (Night 15)
Jugghead (Judd) is doing a happy dance while also implementing some much needed damage control. Margaret pushed too many of his buttons and now she is toast.
Jugghead explains to the rest of Nakum that his bark is worse than his bite and he is not a loose cannon. He is a teddy bear. Sure, Jugghead. Whatever you say.
Jugghead: He is going to be laughing all the way to the bank while Margaret is back home making chicken wings...or something. Dream on, Jugghead. Dream on.
Jamie: Jugghead is a great guy to take to the final two because he will just keep blowing his stack and nobody with a brain in their head will give him the money.
Yaxha Tribal Happenings (Day 16)
The cut on Bobby Jon's shoulder has seeped into his shirt and dried. BJ rips his shirt off taking off about six layers of skin with it. BJ: We have to be tough. There is a gold rush at the end of the rainbow.
Not to be outdone, Brandon shows off his war wounds too from the mega ball challenge. Brandon tells Amy that the ones she has make her look tough.
Reward Challenge
Hands down one of the dumbest 'Survivor' challenges of all time. Each player must go around a pole wrapping themselves up in fabric. Once they have done so, another tribemate joins them at the second pole and they wrap themselves together. The wrapping continues until everyone is one big ball of freakin' yarn. When everyone's done it is time to unspool one tribe member at a time and they then race to the mat. Each team has a designated "wrapper" to assist with the chore. I told you. This is worse than getting vegetables or fruit for trick or treat. Yech!
Reward
A feast of chocolate and a zip-line trip through the jungles of Guatemala.
Result
Amy and Jamie are the "wrappers". Jugghead sits out. Nakum falls over each other and loses valuable time.
Winners: Yaxha.
Yaxha Reward Happenings (Day 16)
BJ: We got the momentum now. It is nice to get away from camp and do something different.
Amy admits she is deathly afraid of heights as she stands on the zip-line platform. Amy zips through the jungle like she has just seen a Mayan king rise from the grave George Romero style.
Amy: The trip was unbelievable but definitely a once in a lifetime deal as far as she is concerned.
BJ: The trip was majestic. It is the stuff you only see in movies. Brandon: It was so cool!
At the conclusion of the zip-line trip a table of every kind of chocolate imaginable is waiting for them. Brandon has never eaten so much chocolate in his life. Even looking at the mud around them makes him ill.
Nakum Tribal Happenings (Day 17)
Rafe and Steph are busying themselves making playing cards out of leaves when suddenly they hear familiar voices calling them. Yaxha has paddled to their camp. It is Danni's birthday and she invites all of Nakum to their camp for a party.
Jamie is the party pooper extraordinaire. Jamie: Why did they come here? There is nothing here. I am not going with the enemy. Steph and the others convince him to go. Steph: What is the worst than can happen? Cindy is not too thrilled to be cavorting with Yaxha either.
Cindy: Why hang out with people we want to get rid of? I have to keep my mouth shut and go along with the rest of the tribe though as that is what they want.
When Nakum arrives at Yaxha, Danni presents them with a bowl of their own chocolate. Nakum is quite taken aback by the hospitality.
Steph: They are the enemy but hell yeah, I will go in their pool and eat their chocolate.
BJ: This afternoon, it is just about fellowship like the Mayan kings used to do before they went to war against one another.
While everyone is having fun, Jamie remains quite reserved. He is trying to figure everyone out. Everyone should be there on business just like him.
Jamie decides he has had enough and calls for everyone to split. Steph doesn't understand what Jamie is thinking. Jamie says he wants to keep his focus and will get to know everyone after the game is done. Nakum paddles off.
Steph: Jamie is losing it. She figures there will eventually be a big time clash between her and Jamie soon.
Yaxha Tribal Happenings (Day 18)
Gary and Amy meet. They both know that it is a do or die situation for them when the next Immunity Challenge comes about. They are outnumbered at Yaxha.
Amy jokes to Gary that she can use phone records to find him after the game is over and done with. Amy kids that Gary used to be an ex-NFL football player. Gary: Yeah, I wish.
Amy hopes Gary isn't playing her or she will kick his butt.
Gary: Amy can search all over Grand Haven. She won't find a Gary Hawkins.
Amy: They need to win Immunity so it will be five versus five at the merger.
BJ: If we don't come through in the Immunity Challenge, the other tribe will just pick us off at the merge. This is the biggest day yet. This is it!
Immunity Challenge
Puzzle pieces depicting the Mayan calendar are buried in the sand. One by one, the tribe mates will head off to the sand pit and haul one of the pieces back. Once all 12 pieces are found, the tribe can begin assembling their puzzle.
Reward
Immunity from Tribal Council.
Results
Lydia sits out. Some of the pieces are buried in the sand and must be located then dug out. In bringing one piece back, Jamie throws it and hits Steph in the leg.
Winners: Nakum.
Yaxha Pre-Tribal Council Happenings (Day 18)
Amy: It was a devastating loss not only for herself but the tribe too. It is going to be an uphill battle now.
Amy talks with Danni. Amy claims she would never outlast any of the people on Nakum but she could outwit them. Danni says she would hate BJ to go but then again he has already had his chance to play the game before. It is not fair for him to be able to return. You can almost see the light bulb go off over Amy's head. Amy states if Danni will go along with the plan, she thinks she can convince Gary to vote for BJ too.
Amy meets with Gary. Gary says he has to show his loyalty to Danni, Brandon and BJ. If she can get Danni to back the BJ plan, he will do it too.
BJ and Brandon worry about being so close. BJ says that all he wants to do is make the jury this time. It would be a dream come true for him.
Brandon isn't sure what to do. Gary, Danni and Amy deserve to be in the game more than BJ but he made a deal with BJ. He is in a complicated spot and it is taking a mental toll on him. He feels like he is selling his soul for the money.
Yaxha Tribal Council Happenings
Danni says everyone has bonded so well. Gary: The group is tight. They have been through the best and worst times together. Amy: The experience has been the bomb. She loves Nakum. Brandon talks about some being more deserving than others. Danni believes it is hard to keep your word in the game. BJ is going with what deals he made and he will honour them.
BJ writes down Amy's name. She is the strongest and most real person he has ever met in his whole life.
Final Voting
1. GARY HOGEBOOM: Amy.
3. AMY O'HARA: Bobby Jon.
4. BRANDON BELLINGER: Amy.
5. DANNI BOATWRIGHT: Amy.
6. BOBBY JON DRINKARD: Amy.
Tribal Council Victim: AMY O'HARA.
Probst give Yaxha new red buffs. He instructs them to deliver the new buffs to Nakum at their camp. The tribes are merging and it is up to everyone to design a new flag and a new tribe name.
Parting Comments
"I am very proud of myself getting this far. You are ripped down to your soul here in Guatemala until you are absolutely nothing. I have learned a tremendous amount of things I never knew about myself and I will continue to learn about myself after this journey is over when I get home. I made some great friends and I had a great time. I wouldn't want it any other way." -- AMY O'HARA.
On the next 'Survivor': Television.
Nakum awakes to a big surprise. Yaxha wakes a sleeping Nakum to the good news. The Survivors get to choose their fate. The players are shown coming to a challenge. Steph: Oh, my God. Tempers flare at the new tribe. Jugghead to Jamie: Shut up, dude. Shut up. I cannot listen to you right now.
On the next 'Survivor': Internet.
Survivors learn that there is an Immunity idol hidden in the Guatemalan jungle, and the hunt begins. Given the choice to feast or challenge, several castaways choose to enjoy a large feast in front of the others instead of competing for Immunity. Is this a smart move, or will their hunger be their demise?
Powell's Thoughts:
If the rumours are true and Danni fits into the Final Four picture, she must either do some smooth manoeuvring to get in good with Steph's alliance or she must really rock during the upcoming Individual Immunity Challenges. Based on her tribe's situation, there is no other way to explain how she makes it so far. Methinks either there are bigger targets before Danni or she stabs her alliance in the back.
Don't shed any tears for Bobby Jon. It seems that he will make the jury...just by the skin of his teeth.
As illustrated again tonight, Cindy has the mind-set of a great 'Survivor' player. The problem is she is on the outside of the core Nakum Alliance. She will need to lay low for a spell or strengthen those bonds to advance.
The hidden Immunity Idol challenge deal is apparently where the person who locates the necklace can use it whenever they feel like it in the future.
It seems, the new tribe's name is Yhakum. You know...Yaxha and Nakum put together. Oh, the originality is mind-blowing. Snore.
