Yes, yes, I am always late in viewing things; in fact, I don't think I've ever watched Disney's Alice in Wonderland all the way through. I've never read the book either. This past weekend, I watched the new "Alice in Wonderland", or Alice's Return to Wonderland.
I hated the Disney version. The parts I saw were boring - I never saw the entire film, because I just couldn't sit through it.
And I really wasn't looking forward to seeing this new one....except it was a Tim Burton film, starring Johnny Depp, so I had to see it. Not to mention LX insisted.
Every review I read about it, blasted it as being unimaginative - more like "Alice in Blunderland". Know what? I LOVED it! Maybe it's because I never saw the animated version. Maybe it's because I never read the book. Most probably it's because it starred Johnny Depp.
How is it possible to make the Mad Hatter somehow somewhat in some odd way sexually appealing? I think I must be mad.

I haven't seen it yet. I tend to like/love films the critics trash, and hate the ones they praise. Funny that.

You'd probably like 'Alice' then. I'm not sure what the critics had to say about it, but the reviews on imbd's site were pretty scathing. A lot of the complaint being that the plot was a rip-off of Narnia, and that the actors gave wooden performances.
Although there were definitely plot similarities between the new Alice in Wonderland and Narnia, I didn't get the feeling I 'saw it all before'. It was a colorful film, and some of the performances were colorful as well. Depp's most noticeably. Like he did with Willy Wonka, his Mad Hatter was likable, and made you want to say "Aw...poor guy. I just want to take him home." Ok, so maybe that's just me.
If you do see it, I'd be interested in your thoughts. Sometimes, I really think the people who write reviews on the imbd site and others like it, dissect and pick apart the movies just to try to appear as if the movie is supposed to make some sort of deep psychological statement and they obviously got it while the director or actors didn't, instead of being what it is - entertainment. Alice in Wonderland - for me, anyway - was just that. Entertainment......with oh-so-fine scenery....even in frazzled red hair and outlandish makeup.

I'll try to remember this thread once I've seen the movie, which will be when it comes on one of the movie channels. (HBO, Starz) Unless I rent it. And I too don't understand the 'reviews' given on sites by those who like to prove just how much more cleverer they are than those behind what they're reviewing. Shoot, I love the Twilight books, and I visit the author's IMDb board, and the haters will pound you into the dust there. -So what I love a book series you hate ... how does that make me a moron?- I just don't see why anyone would want to waste their time on things they hate, when they can be on boards/sites of things they love.
I haven't see Depp's Willy Wonka yet. I've seen commercials, and I've stopped on it for a second or two while channel surfing. I just love Gene Wilder's version so much, I haven't been able to make myself watch the remake. Depp looks so freakishly dorky ... unlike Gene Wilder's cute dorky. I don't know. Maybe I'll finally watch it one day.
