Alfre Woodard is joining the cast of the ABC hit Desperate Housewives. Variety reports that Woodard has signed a contract to appear on the show.

Her first appearance will be in the final episode of the season before continuing as a regular this fall. Variety said she will play a seemingly normal woman who moves into the cul-de-sac with her son.

It's her first TV gig since her work in the medical drama St. Elsewhere. Woodard had previously signed on to guest star on the NBC drama pilot Inconceivable, with the option to make subsequent appearances. It's not clear how her duties on "Housewives" will affect said commitment if NBC moves forward with the project.

Mehcad Brooks is set to join the cast of ABC's hit dramedy Desperate Housewives as a potential regular. On Touchstone TV's Desperate Housewives, Brooks will play the son of Alfre Woodard's character. The two will move into a house on Wisteria Lane.

Brooks will make his debut on the show in the final two episodes of the season and will return next season as a recurring with an option to become a regular.

Brooks recently wrapped the Walt Disney Co. feature Glory Road for producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The actor, whose credits also include a four-episode arc on Fox's Boston Public.

I didn't know who Mehcad Brooks was, but I've seen Alfre Woodard in a few things. First thing I saw her in (that I remember) is Star Trek: First Contact.

British Soap Star Ainsworth Cast On 'Desperate Housewives'

British soap star Kacey Ainsworth has been hired for a three-episode guest stint on Desperate Housewives next season. The news was revealed during last night's British Soap Awards by Shane Richie, Ainsworth's current co-star on the daily BBC series EastEnders. He said that Ainsworth will be playing an English nanny, meaning she will probably be joining the Scavo household to take care of Lynette's hyperactive kids. Lynette will need the help, as it was recently revealed she will embark on a new career in advertising next season.

"You're not meant to know about that," a shocked Ainsworth told the British tabloid News of the World, when asked about the role. 34-year old Ainsworth has been playing the role of Maureen 'Little Mo' Mitchell on EastEnders for five years now, and has won both a British Soap Award and two National Television Awards for her performance. However, the series has recently fallen upon hard times, as its viewership levels have fallen to record lows (in the UK).

According to News of the World, Ainsworth's Desperate Housewives role will mean her departure from the troubled BBC soap. It will be a new step forward for Ainsworth's career, after previous appearances in the British drama series A Touch Of Frost and the Mike Leigh film Topsy-Turvy.
