“I've pretty much given up publicly describing the characters I play,” said Ben Browder, who plays the new leader on “Stargate SG-1,” Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell. “They exist as a function of the story and the audience perspective. Anything I say just gets in the way,” according to Eclipse Magazine.
In an interview with Marla Reed, Browder discussed his role on “Stargate SG-1,” which just finished filming it’s 9th season and will soon be heading into it’s 10th year and the history books as the longest running science fiction drama on American television.
Many fans remember Browder from his role as John Crichton on “Farscape.” When asked to compare these two roles, he said, “It’s a little like apples and potatoes. They're both roundish, but are they both fruit? I don't know. They taste different to me.”
Browder said he enjoys playing Mitchell, from the “boy stuff” such as fights, uniforms and “getting knocked down,” as well as working with the established cast of “Stargate SG-1.” “The Stargate folks are a very tight family,” he said, “and a heck of a lot of fun to hang out with.” However, he doesn’t hang out with them much after shooting -- he's just too tired.
“Anytime you join an existing group/company there will be the usual reservations,” said Browder. “Doing this in front of a few million Stargate fans would be a very daunting proposition if you stopped to think about it. Luckily I don't think too much about such things and fall headlong into the abyss. I believe in the credo, ‘Fail gloriously and fail with a swagger in your step!’”
He said he was an eternal optimist; that reservations were for “when you need to hedge your bets.”
Browder had thrown himself into the role of Cameron Mitchell, sometimes literally -- he has done some of his own stunts. But he said the biggest challenge of this role, especially since he was joining an established show, “was to figure out which way the current was running and swim with all the other fishes. Every set has its own kind of flow and rhythm... learning to swim with the flow is essential. In fact,. It’s something I'm still learning.”
Reruns of the first half of Season 9 of “Stargate SG-1,” are airing on Friday nights at 8 p.m. (EST) on the SciFi Channel. New episodes from Season 9 are scheduled to start on January 6, 2006.
