According to Rubie:
- Don't chase after agents, get agents to chase after you. (Agents seek out successful writers who are unrepresented.)
To get agents to chase you:
- Get published in magazines & anthologies.
- Write book reviews for local & national newspapers.
- Get your name in print somewhere, and put in your byline that you're currently working on "such & such" (fiction/nonfiction book) about "blah blah blah". (Be brief on the about. Keep it to one or two lines.)
- Go to writer conferences & networks.
- Enter competitions and win prizes.
- Get your work noticed by "those in the know" who can bend the ears of those who'd be interested in representing &/or publishing your work.
