Please be aware that if you, or anyone else, goes to google, and types in your telephone number with area code (no spaces), your name and address may pop up, along with a link for a map to your house!! This happened to me, and I opted out right away. This is a total invasion of privacy!!

I don't get it, fafnjaf. Are you saying you put your phone # in the search box? I just tried that with a couple phone numbers, and nothing came up.

I see opting out is really impossible. There are so many places you have to know where to go to get you off their list. Anyhow it says that you can send me flowers and gifts! ;D Irene

Google isn't the only search engine with this info. They get it from phone companies. If no one knows your phone number, they can't find you. On the other hand, if they just try numbers at random... Or if you call a wrong number and they have Caller ID, they can check the number out online. I do it to see who's called me.
My name, number & address are listed in the local phone books and no one has come bothering me yet... so what's with having it on the internet?
Yahoo has an email search too. I haven't found myself on it yet, but when I did a search for "Reneé O'Connor" there were several listed and one was a New Zealand Yahoo account. I never sent an email to this account though... I figured I had no business bothering whoever it was... whether it was ROC or just someone else with the same name.

Irene said: I couldn't even find my full name on Google. Not only that, but my address isn't even in the phone book. Jox said: Where? I put it into Google's search box several different ways and I didn't come up. Jox said: Well, yes and no. Yes, the online phone directories get their numbers from the phone companies, and that information appears as it does in your local phone book. However, those same directories have ads for advanced people searches, and I found my middle name and age on a couple of them. Still no address, though, unless maybe I buy the report. Edit to add:Irene said: Yes and no on that one, too. I have opted out and had my name and number taken off of some of those sites, but I'm sure it would be impossible to get off of all of them.

I was just joshing you gigs about me finding your name. My name wasn't listed as my telephone name so I don't know where they pulled my info from. Now does anyone know if you can do a search on email address and get someone's actual real name? Irene

I just type in my area code & number and my name & address come up... but I'm not unlisted in the phone book. I can add the dash's or leave them out... either way works.

I figured you were. I imagine you would probably have to submit your email address to one of those sites before anyone could find you that way. But if I'm wrong and someone found me that way, I'd be complaining to my ISP, because I don't use my real name with those free accounts. Our area code changed a couple of years ago and Google still has the old area code, which is why it didn't work before. I just tried the old area code and that worked.

No one can find me! :laughraz: It's shocking to see information you could find out about someone if you had their name and paid some of these online services. Isn't that an invasion of privacy? Gab

It should be, imo, but if it were illegal, then companies like "USSearch" wouldn't be advertising their services in TV commercials. These are the services that made me wait almost 4 years before divulging even my first name publicly online, and about a year(?) of knowing someone online before divulging it to her privately. I've had no problems so far, and I could see services like USSearch being good for finding old friends that you've lost contact with over the years... But it enables stalkers who might not otherwise know how to find the object of their "affection." Besides, with the internet, if I wanted to be found, I could simply put my real name up on a webpage somewhere with an email address and submit it to a search engine.
