Of all the real stand out episodes, this is the most action packed. The last 10 minutes are thrilling edge of seat stuff, and Gabby's sacrifice never fails to shock and awe. That shot of her face whilst falling backwards with Hope is an incredibly powerful bit of direction, and then we get the best line ever in Xena with "no more living for you". So did Callisto deliberately minipulate Xena at the end, or did she genuinely take delight in Gabby's death so much that she really wanted to live? Despite what Hudson Leick might say, I can only see it as the latter. It's a perfect piece of irony: Xena wouldn't kill her when she wanted to die, but out of spite, she kills her when she wants to live. It's perfect - I can't see how you can see it any other way.

I think she took delight into Gabbys death, cause like Callisto said
Perfect indeed ;D The only thing I didnt like about it was Ares with Hope

The only thing I didnt like about it was Ares with Hope
Yeah, there's the shock value in seeing Ares and Gabby (not really Gabby, but you know what I mean), but other than that, it doesn't really ring true for me. Then again, Ares and Callisto, or Ares and Livia didn't seem right either.

I liked this episode because there were so many plots to keep up with. I kind of enjoyed seeing Hope and Ares together, I have always thought that maybe Ares had the hots for Gabby. I really liked Joxer here, he really came through for Xena. Seraphin was very annoying though, she made me wish that Xena would have dropped her off the cliff. I was totally shocked when Gabrielle threw herself and Hope down the pit. Of course I knew that she would be back, but the waiting was agonizing.

Re: Gabrielle and Hope Surviving the Lava Pit
Excerpt:
Actually, not true. There was one writer who was very vocal about it. Me. I don't like doing suspense set-ups without having a worthy pay-off.
I had come up with a scenario to explain the situation (to follow) which was never used. But I knew it had to be big and it had to explain why Xena couldn't find Gabrielle after the fact (we knew she would try) and how Hope survived.
In my scenario, we would have seen a flashback (when Gabrielle explained what had happened later) where she and Hope fell into the pit. Keep in mind, there was a fire at the bottom of the pit. Fire = Dahak. We would see a firey hand rise up from the depths to grab Hope. In the process, the hand would have hit Gabrielle, knocking her sideways and into a cave on the side of the pit. The resulting impact and explosion of Dahak's hand grabbing Hope created a cave-in, sealing Gabrielle off from the pit. She found her way out by following the cave to another exit.
Rob chose not to do it. There were reasons, yes. It was expensive; the flashback would take time from the present story; etc. All legitimate, but (in my opinion) lesser evils to deal with than just leaving it hanging.
But that the writers didn't give it much thought, absolutely not true. Liz and Chris just weren't a part of those conversations, so, naturally, they wouldn't have known.
The thread was lost when ezBoards was hacked into, so here's the newer thread:

Excerpt:
Question: Do you think Hope is all demon or part human?
Steven Sears: Hope was "part human" but all evil. Her human genetics wasn't in dispute, but not enough to have turned her or made her "good". There was enough, though, to serve as an Achilles Heel in order to defeat her. The human side of her really wanted her mother's approval, but only in the sense that her mother would finally agree with her mission and tactics. Still, she would allow Gabrielle more leeway in "finding her way" than she would tolerate in others. That could be used against her, but not have changed her.

Great ep! I've seen the ending so many times and it still shocks me every time.
