The first time I saw this episode I thought that Gabrielle had just missed with the spear. It was only after her talk with Xena that I realized she had deliberately throwen it into the ground. I was a bit upset with her, after all she had been through she didn't have the nerve to kill someone even though it would have saved someone else. Then I realized that it would be things like this war that made her choose Eli's way of peace. Luckily for Xena she was able to kill to save someone in Ides of March.

I think this one tries to do a bit too much in terms of scale and doesn't really pull it off. And the slow-mo battle scenes at the end are a bit overdone and just too cheesy. And like RX I thought that Gabby missed with the spear, or perhaps didn't have the strength to throw it far enough. Not wanting to kill to save a friend just makes her seem weak, especially as it was in the middle of a battle that she was a part of. She'll lead you into battle, but she won't kill the enemy to save your life - is that a good thing? Not really.
But then I've never liked the whole path of peace thing through S4.

Just been watching the interview on the DVDs, and Steven L Sears talks about the javelin incident. He said Gabby must have intended to kill because otherwise why would she have thrown the spear at all? His take on it was that like some people in law enforcement when forced to take a kill shot, regardless of the circumstances part of their subconscious just causes them to miss - they just can't do it.
I remember seeing a documentary about soldiers, and the fact that studies of WW2 soldiers had shown that only about 2% actually went for the kill shot, and a lot of those actually had similar personality traits to psychopaths. Interesting stuff.
