EvergreenLM - 10:23am May 12, 2002 ET (#110 of 330) "To Conquer Others is to Know Power...to Conquer Yourself is to Know the Way"
Evergreen's Rubicon
"Evergreen, have your father sign some official papers granting large sums of money and arms to Caesar for his future campaigns against Pompeii and make sure he signs it"! Evergreen nodded, "right away!"
Sitting bound to a tree and gagged,Justinian looked as any other prisoner. But he was not just any other captive. Justinian was the piece of the mosaic of events that could turn the impending conflict in the favor of the Amazons. Funny, though, thought Evergreen as she approached,he just looks old and tired.
Evergreen reaches the tree and squats down resting her elbows on her knees. The chocolate colored eyes inherited from Evergreen's mother, Hestius, look into the face of this man, searching for something she knows again will not be found. He slowly looks up to his intently staring daughter. She pulls the gag away and quietly, deliberately, speaks as she pulls a sais from her boot.
"I could cut these bonds and set you free. I could kill you, and the others could not stop me. What shall I do with you? Shall I do what you did to my mother,to her tribe?"
Tears fall from Evergreen's dark eyes. The confrontation is bittersweet.
Justinian shifts his weight. His angular chin juts out. He shows no fear.
"You,my daughter, cannot know the sins of my past. You cannot feel the weight of what I have carried. I know of no other life that the one for which I was born. My life was chosen for me, I am a product of Rome. I am Rome this day, I will be Rome tomorrow, and I will be Rome until my death. Nothing can change that. No one can change that. Not even you,my own blood, can move me from that allegiance I will keep my promise to destroy you and all of your mother's kind. I will line the road to Rome with their bodies."
Evergreen contemplates the import of the Justinian's words.
"Father, I am asking that you sign a message that my Sister's have written to Caesar. They wish to convince him that Lord Pompeii is at the heart of an advance to conquer what he believes is his destiny alone. Do this, and I will assure your safety among my Sisters. You will be held until we have "resolved" this situation with Rome. When it is finished, you can return to the only love in your life"
Justinian sits up as in an attempt to rise.
"HERE, is my answer, daughter!" and spits upon her.
And with a voice breaking with sorrow and tears flowing without stop,Evergreen sobs,
"And here is my reply, father",sinking the sias into his heart.
Justinian says not a word, his eyes meet hers as the spirit of the man leaves him,he slumps, and she knows it is over.
"ACTA EST FABULA, my father."- The Drama Has Been Acted Out
------------------------------------------------------------------------ phalon - 05:25pm May 12, 2002 ET (#111 of 330)
"Damn it to Tartarus", Phalon mutters to herself. Her mood has been foul since reading the tea leaves earlier this evening, and is growing more foul with each turn of events. First the business with Puella and now this. "Phalon I need you to guard Justinian. He is the key to our advantage...for now", Xwpfan had told her. Now he lay there mortally wounded because she had let her guard down.
Evergreen had calmly told her, "I need to talk with my father. Alone." Phalon looked into her eyes and saw a pleading look in them that she could not deny. She quietly walked away and sat by the fire, leaving father and daughter alone.
Through the flames, Phalon could see the conversation between the two was quickly deteriorating. With a sinking in her heart, Phalon then saw the flash of Evergreen's sais. With a heavy sigh, Phalon grabbed her pouch which contained various healing items and headed over to where the Senator lay slumped on the ground, knowing really, there was nothing that could be done.
Reaching into the pouch on her way, her hand closed around something hard and cold. She withdrew her hand from the pouch and stared at the item in her hand. A necklace. A flashback to herself and a wounded man. A wounded man murmuring about a girl. A girl with a necklace, a necklace in the shape of a bull with a green stone. Phalon closed her hand back around the necklace. A girl with red hair, like flames from a fire. Phalon shut her eyes. Flames. Flames, burning buildings. Screams. The necklace in Phalon's hand was getting warmer. Screams and the smell of burning flesh. The necklace was hotter still. Pain, unbearable pain.
Phalon opened her eyes wide with a start. She dropped the necklace back into her pouch, and held her hand up to her face. There, in the fire's light, she could see the red imprint of a bull, the seered flesh of her palm already starting to blister.

Destiny
Gabbyfan had fallen into an exhausted sleep and Zena was preparing her own bed when she heard the murmer of voices speaking the Roman language. She saw Phalon stride toward the tree where Justinian was tied up and saw the flash of Evergreen's sais. "By Hades, what is going on?", Zena growled. When she reached the three figures Evergreen was crouched beside her silent father with the bloody sais still in her hand. Phalon the mystic seemed to have gone into a trance and was swaying a few feet away.
Zena grabbed Evergreen's bloody hands, tossing the sais to the grass. "What have you done? He was your FATHER for Ares sake!", Zena pleaded. Evergreen pulled away, her face transformed in a way that she had never revealed in all their travels together. Zena pulled her friend back from the body and stepped to the side as Evergreen tore her hands from Zena's grasp. "Let me be", Evergreen hissed looking directly into the eyes of her sister. "I can't," Zena replied, "what is sworn is sworn. You did something that will hurt us all and that will haunt you forever. Tell me so that I can understand. NOW." "Understand THIS," Evergreen snarled and hit Zena across the jaw with a powerful swipe, knocking her to the ground, unconcious.
The beach again. Running. Always running. Who is the dark figure?

A Place Where No One Can Follow
"You did something that will hurt us all and that will haunt you forever. Tell me so that I can understand. NOW." "Understand THIS," Evergreen snarled and hit Zena across the jaw with a powerful swipe, knocking her to the ground, unconscious.
Evergreen recoiled at the sight of her friend laying on the ground. Phalon stood looking on in shock and disbelief. How could it have come to this? This person, who in the depth of winter when little food was to be had, would not harm any creature to satisfy her hunger now had slain her own father. This person who allowed no one but Zena to come near a guarded heart, had now struck a blow that sent her friend to the ground.
Evergreen picked up the Sai,placed it back in her boot.
"Phalon, bring my horse, some rope and a blanket. I will need you to help me place Justinian on Whisperer. He cannot be found in this place."
Evergreen knew that the Queen's judgment would be swift and harsh for what she done. She knew that no one would understand that the action taken, although brutal as it may seem, was done for the greater good of them all. She would not allow her father to bring upon those she cared for the same fate he bestowed on her mother and her people. Not in this place and time.
Zena remained motionless on the ground. Evergreen knelt down beside her friend touching the growing mark of violent indigo on her face.
"I am sorry my friend." I never meant to harm you. You are the only one that has allowed me to be part of a greater goodness. And for that, I am grateful"
Phalon returned with Whisperer. The two lifted the Senator throwing him across the saddle. Evergreen stood silently looking at the lifeless body.
"I am taking him to the edge of the Roman camp. Tell Zena that only I will have to answer to the god of Eli for what I have done.'' Evergreen hoped that the god of Eli finds her long before the Queen does.
Evergreen leads Whisperer into the forest. She never looks back. The blood of her father was on her hands and her heart. She could not wash it from one,but could from the other. Evergreen walks past a meandering stream. The water softly rushes over mossy rocks on its way to joining the larger part of its universe. She stops and sees her reflection in a small pool of clear water. Evergreen looks at the stains on her face and hands. She tethers Whisperer and begins to undress as she walks towards the water. When fully unclothed, she slides into the cool water and submerges her whole body and being. the water soothes the ache from the mark on her back.
After moments of quite introspection, Evergreen rises from the water moving towards the embankment. She is aware that someone is watching from within the trees. There are soft footsteps falling nearby. Evergreen is not afraid. She turns her back and sees Zena's reflection in the water. Evergreen does not move.
Zena looks at the mark and begins to understand.

To little Gabbyfan, and the others at their campsite, the evening had been just as eventful as if they had decided to attack the Roman Camp after all. Between almost receiving a heartattack from Puella, and being more sick than anyone would ever want to hear about, Gabbyfan was exhausted. Not only that, they had some very unexpected guests that night, xwpfan and a Roman senator who was Evergreens father.
After things had somewhat calmed down, Gabbyfan fell asleep in Zena's blanket, and under her comforting watch. It was an uneasy sleep however, and was plagued with chills and a general bad feeling. Later, she woke up for no reason apparent to her. Gabbyfan automatically looked for Zena, and found she was no longer at the campsite. She pulled herself up onto her shaky feet, and looked into the surrounding woods for any sign of her sister Amazon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ gabbyfan4ever - 12:32am May 13, 2002 ET (#115 of 233)
To Gabbyfans shock and anger she saw Evergreen strike Zena to the ground. After processing what she had just seen the little Amazon went as fast as her wobbly legs would take her to get her staff. Once she reached Zena's unconscious body, Evergreen had already left. Gabbyfan got some water and tried to revive the woman who had been like a mother to her. Eventually Zena awoke rubbing her head where she had been struck.
Gabbyfan, who was shaking as much out of anger as from her fever, wanted to go find Evergreen and punish her for what she had done. Zena had been nothing but a friend to Evergreen, and she couldn't understand what must have come over her. Nonetheless, Zena calmly told her to return to camp with Phalon and go back to sleep. Reluctantly, she allowed herself to be helped back to the campsite by Phalon. However there would be no sleep for Gabby that night, instead she sat up and waited for her sister to return.
------------------------------------------------------------------------ xwpfan - 02:40am May 13, 2002 ET (#116 of 330)
Pompeii's camp was not quite a day way, I stopped to break camp. I needed to eat and rest a while. I reached in to my bag and unrolled a loaf of bread and a hunk of cheese. As I ate,I sat down in the quiet of the night and reflected on the days events.
The one thought I could not quiet in my head was the image Puella's necklace. could not get out of my head... there were just so many questions ...if it was hers and if it were real... I shook my head... no, it couldn't be. It had to be some sort of trophy gift from a Roman.. it had to be.
Perhaps the fates had willed that Puella's life blood had not been taken by me. I now had more questions then answers. I began to feel conflicted . I sighed knowing I would have to wait to have a private counsel with Queen Saxy to discuss my concerns.
I was about to spread out my bedroll when a young Amazon came running towards me breathlessly,"Come quick! Evergreen has Killed the Prisoner!
My heart sank. Kidnapping Justinain had held such promise, we could've gleaned much information from him. Any information could've allowed us to better plan future Offensive plans . Now we were without an advantage yet again.
I rolled up my bag, cleared my tracks and raced back knowing that this development could get several of us killed and possibly put off our war plans.
My journey back was filled with angst and self doubt. If I had only assigned someone else to Justinan. What had I beeen thinking?
When we arrived The tribe was abuzz with news of Evergreen's brutal murder of her Father Justian.
Some of the younger Amazons around the camp were saying how Queen Saxy will be furious. Others were questioning "What could've happened that Evergreen would kill her own father and endanger her sisters like that??"
I found myself at a loss for words. Evergreen had been one of the nicest Amazons in the whole lot and now she would have to face the counsel for not only for killing Justinain, Striking Zena and faking her own death. I looked over to see a very wobbly Little gabbyfan staring off into ace looking quiet sad and perplexed
Evergreen would have to stand before the tribal counsel and be judged by her sisters. Evergreen could be banished, killed or jailed . Evergreen would need someone to speak on her behalf and soon... but who?

The Greater Good
* ***Running, always running on the beach. The waves crashing over me........******* (SPLASH)
The water was so cold, SO WET! Zena awoke, choking and sputtering to see the little Amazon's anxious face hovering over her. In a rush the whole scene came back to play itself again in Zena's aching head. She sat up slowly, brushing back the dripping water and firmly grasping the staff that Gabbyfan held in a tight grip. "Let me go after her for you, let me punish her for this", Gabbyfan placed her shaking fingers against the swelling on Zena's face. Zena looked at her with calm sad eyes, knowing that whatever she did next would have more of an impact on her pupil than all the words she would ever speak or write to her. "Revenge is not our way, we act not react. I will go after Evergreen. She needs me. You go back to the Amazon camp with Phalon and Puella. We will both come back to you soon. There is much training we have yet to give you." Gabbyfan relaxed her grip on the staff and her anger settled into saddness and confusion. For a moment she held Zena's hand as she helped her to her feet, and Zena steadied them both against the staff. Reaching out to Phalon who seemed to be back from the spirit world, Zena gave her daughter into Phalon's care and received the direction in which Evergreen had taken her father. "Get to the camp. Let no one judge what has happened until we all understand the demons Evergreen battles. We will return together." Zena whistled for Ergo and took off after Evergreen.
At a stream a few miles away Zena saw Whisperer tied to a tree with a body sized bundle on her saddle. Not knowing how she would be received she slipped quietly down the mossy bank. Zena knew Evergreen felt her there and accepted her presence or she would have already been dead with the sai through her throat. Her reflection appeared in the water beside Evergreen and she sank to the ground beside the stream. Slowly her fingers traced the scar she had never seen, and the tears of both women flowed as freely as the current below them.

Is There A Doctor In The House?
Dawn was coming. The birds had begun to wake and greet the light, as the stream rushed on, carrying the tears and the anger away. Evergreen pulled herself onto the bank and after dressing quickly sat down on the moss beside Zena. They sat watching the pink expand through the clouds and the tree tops, each thinking their own thoughts but comforted by the presence of the other.
Zena looked down at the moss around her boots and the little yellow flowers sticking up in between the tufts. She reached into the clear stream and drank from her hand holding the icy water to her swollen jaw. Evergreen looked up through her lashes and said in a very small voice, "I'm so sorry." "I know you are. I know you are, " Zena murmured. "But I can't go on until you tell me this hidden story. I hurt inside, don't you?" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ girlpower - 04:39pm May 13, 2002 ET (#119 of 330) Courage is not the absence of fear..but the strength to conquer it.
Puella's mission
I need someone to deliver Justinian's signet ring to Caesar as proof that he has been kidnapped... by Pompey.” Xwpfan announced. She smiled as Evergreen stepped forward. She took her by the arm and told her "I knew I could depend on you to volunteer, but I have other plans for you." Puella stepped forward, "I'll go." she snarled. Xwpfan was stunned by my words. She quickly dismissed the notion. Puella can’t be trusted. Then something I didn’t expect. Evergreen spoke on my behalf, "Truthfully, Puella is the perfect candidate, being a Roman slave she might be able to get into the camp and maybe even get access to Caesar himself without raising any suspicion." Everyone nodded in agreement. Although Xwpfan had some reservations, she gave me Justinian’s signet ring and a parchment with Pompey’s forged signature to give to Caesar. She then gave her some further instructions telling me to meet up with them in two moons by the tree line. Quietly I gathered my things, carefully placing the parchment and signet ring in my pouch and left.
Caesar’s camp is over a day away. I must find myself a horse. Remembering the Roman horses set free in the field, I hurried. As I came near the field I was pleased to see three horses grazing. I chose what looked to be the strongest of the three. Approaching her I put my hand up to the side of her face. Whispering I patted her. “Be calm, I just need a ride.” I then jumping upon her back and we rode off towards Caesar.
I’d been riding throughout the night. Dawn is approaching so I slow the horses’ pace. How beautiful the sunrise is. I took my hand up to my throat to feel for my necklace, then remembered it was gone. Lost in the struggle with Xwpfan. I must accomplish this task and get back to the Amazon’s if only to get it back. “No time to waste,” I said to the horse as we picked up the pace once more…

------------------------------------------------------------------------ phalon - 12:34am May 14, 2002 ET (#120 of 330)
Phalon sat against a log in front of the fire, watching over little Gabbyfan while she slept. It was a fitful, feverish sleep, like that of a little child having a nightmare. Phalon thought Gabbyfan would be well enough to travel in the morning, but decided that even if she weren't, it was time to move on to where the other Amazons and their Queen were camped. Agapanthos could be fitted to pull a liter if need be. The difficulty would be in getting Gabbyfan to leave here if Zena and Evergreen were not back. In light of everything that had happened, there was danger in staying in one place too long so close to the Roman camp, so they must move, whether their friends were back or not.
Evergreen. Phalon wondered what awaited her once the news of Justinian's murder reached the Queen. Phalon knew that the Amazons lived by a strict code but did not pretend to begin to understand it. Evergreen had her reasons for her desperate action, of that Phalon was sure. Reasons that ran deeper perhaps, than abiding the Amazon code. Evil reasons? Phalon could not and would not believe it. The presence of evil she had read in the Glechoma hederacea leaves did not apply to Evergreen.
Who then? Zena? Gabbyfan? Phalon did not feel that either of them could possess a wickedness capable of bringing anyone or anything harm.
Phalon's thoughts turned once again to Puella. To Puella and the necklace more specifically. Phalon was sure it was hers. The images she saw of the girl when she held the necklace bore a striking resemblence to Puella. The pain she had felt during the vision was real. A physical pain, but not one stemming from a physical injury. It was more of an emotional agony, manifesting itself into physical pain, like that of a heart wrenching in two.
Did Puella command an evil force? Phalon was not so sure anymore. A heart turned sour perhaps, but not irrevocably corrupt. The key was in the necklace. The necklace and the mysterious wounded man back at Cyrene's. Phalon was sure he could provide the answers to Puella's hidden past.
If not Evergreen, Gabbyfan, Zena or Puella, what evilness lurked here in this camp? Phalon rested her chin in her hand, and stared at the flames. Gabbyfan murmured in her sleep, and little dog snuggled to the girl a bit closer. Agapanthus whinnied softly from the tree where he was tied. Phalon slowly turned her head and stared at the black horse through squinted eyes. She remembered how, while riding to catch up with the Amazons, skiddish and easily spooked he was. That's it. It's the damn horse! The damn demon horse! Phalon felt the urge to let loose a wild peal of laughter. Instead she stiffled a chuckle. "Phalon, dear", she thought, "now you really have gone mad." It was amazing what a lack of sleep could do to one's senses.
Phalon laid her head back against the log and drifted off to sleep next to the fire, thinking that most likely the evil force she had detected was a forewarning to the arrival of the cruel hearted Roman Senator.
Beside her, hidden within her pouch, the stone of a worn silver talisman in the shape of a bull, started to emit an eerie green glow.
------------------------------------------------------------------------ girlpower - 04:05pm May 14, 2002 ET (#121 of 330) Courage is not the absence of fear..but the strength to conquer it.
Puella's mission continued
Puella has rode hard all morning. “Time for some rest, girl” I said to the horse. I dismounted, and began walking beside her into a small cluster of trees. As we neared the sight of bright red apples hanging made my mouth water and the horses pace quicken. “We are certainly lucky, food and shade,” I picked one for myself and a couple for my new friend. Quietly we ate and rested.
My mind planning of what to do when I get to Caesar’s camp. It will be easy enough to get in, all I have to do is show my insignia. If I only knew where my Captain was, I would better prepared. After all he was my family, so I was often given information and tasks that involved the missions and raids. He would send me into a situation to prepare for his arrival, making sure that everything was safe and suitable. I wonder if he even notices I am missing? I will have to take the chance that he is returning to Caesar’s camp, so my presence won’t be unusual. If he is already there, I will be in a whole new sort of trouble…

EvergreenLM - 09:32pm May 14, 2002 ET (#122 & 123 of 330) "To Conquer Others is to Know Power...to Conquer Yourself is to Know the Way"
TRACING THE PAST
Evergreen did not move as Zena traced the scars on her back. When her fingers had traveled the depth of the gash on the right shoulder to the long mark from the back to the side, Evergreen quietly began to speak.
“Zena” … Long ago and far away from this place a young Amazon called Daria was captured and sold to a Roman of great wealth and influence. He had only disdain for this woman who represented to him all that he hated about the Amazons. He had made it his quest to destroy them all and take from them the very land of their birthright. He vowed to conquer them all and would start with the one close at hand.
In a moment of lust, he broke Daria’s body and her spirit. From this union of crime came a daughter with the angular features of Rome and the dark countenance of her mother. As she grew, this man of corrupt soul saw in this half breed child the potential of an instrument by which he could fulfill his dream to rid the land of all her kind. Her weapon would be the power of Roman blood mingled with the blood of generations of Amazon warriors. He would use what he most despised as the very road to his destiny. But Daria knew…
Daria was favored in the Roman household. Allisia, wife of the Roman known as Justinian, saw in Daria another life, another way, that women of Rome were not permitted to consider. She trusted Daria and gave her privileges not belonging to the other captives. She entrusted to her the very life of her own child, a daughter of pure Roman heritage, and the most valued of Justinian’s possessions. A jewel that Daria plotted in her dreams to steal from its owner.
In the spring, Daria requested from Allisia that she be permitted to take the children into the countryside to teach them the names and calls of the birds. Allisia granted this without hesitation. As Daria gathered a small amount of bread, fruit, and cheese, Allisia placed a token around the youngest child’s neck.
“This will give you safe passage. No one will question this amulet hanging from the child of Justinian. You will be free to go as you please.”
And so in the eight season of her daughter’s life. Daria left Rome and never looked back. She, with both children, rode deep into the forest and allowed the spirits of her passed over Sisters to lead them home.
Daria never spoke of the life she had left. She now had two daughters, two who grew as flowers, one who flourished in the light and the other bent towards the shade in the dark side of the forest.
The first born knew of the creatures of the forest, the healing of plants, could tell the legends of her kindred, and would stand to any challenge that threatened Amazon land. She knew of the changes that came with the passing of days and loved most of all the time when the earth turned white and furs covered bodies tanned like berries from the sun. The first born grew with the understanding that some day it would be her destiny to lead the tribe.
------------------------------------------------------------------------ EvergreenLM - 09:36pm May 14, 2002 ET (#124 of 330) "To Conquer Others is to Know Power...to Conquer Yourself is to Know the Way"
TRACING THE PAST-continued
The other child, never parted from the token worn since her early seasons. She never felt a part of Daria and her people. She had no bond to these women. She did not understand anything other than she was not their lifeblood.
Her mother saw that in the time of winter, the first borne’s spirit remained Evergreen and unchanged when all else around had forfeited its life until the time the sun returned and warmed the days. Daria would give her a new name and never again speak of anything Roman. " Zena, I AM Evergreen."
“In the fifteenth season of my life, a thunder was heard coming down the mountain and into the valley of the tribe. I had learned a way to listen from a tall, dark, warrior woman who came once with a companion with hair the color of tall grass in the summer sun. She taught me well , and I knew the sound was evil descending upon the camp.”
“Like thunderbolts from Zeus, Roman soldiers rained chaos of our village. Women ran screaming, children stood looking for their mothers, blades came crashing down, and Amazons stood defying a force of which they had no power to defeat. I ran searching for my mother and my sister. In a moment as stilled as the frozen lake, I saw a man riding a great stallion. I knew him, I remembered him. This-was-my-father! HE could stop what was happening to my people.”
“I called his name. He turned and looked at me with eyes of recognition. Without leaving my gaze, he stepped his horse aside and there I saw my mother lying on the earth and I knew that her spirit was gone. Standing next to her was my sister. She shed no tears. “
“My father shouted, ‘Take THAT one! That one only! Kill all the rest!’
“A fallen soldier lay at my feet. I had never held such a weapon, but I swept the sword from the ground, and with a surge of anger as I have never felt before, I charged at my father, my enemy.”
“He spun is horse and with a great flash of silver brought his sword down upon my shoulder. And as I began to fall and turn towards the ground, a second blow found my back.” I lay quietly seeing nothing until the dark warrior woman returned to burn the dead and heal the living.”
“ Zena, hand me my clothes, we have a battle to win.”

Saxy and Lucystar broke from the tree line with their horde of stolen horses. The sentinels posted along the way had spread the message of their passing ahead of them so when the two appeared in camp a mass of amazons stood there, all speaking at the Queen and her Second at once. Saxy dropped the leads to her equine charges and raised a hand, "One at a time please. HEY! Hush! One at a time."
The story of Evergreen's murder of her father was quickly told. The queen's eyes narrowed but she didn't speak until the whole story was told, or at least as much as the clan knew of the story. Shaking her head, the Queen turned to Lucystar. "Go have someone look at your head and then come find me, I need to talk to you alone but there are things I must attend to first," she said in a soft voice. After LS had obeyed Saxy dismounted, throwing her mount's lead to the nearest amazon.
Striding toward her tent, she beckoned several of the senior amazons to follow her. They had plans to make and she needed to have more information from the women in camp. I can tell that this is going to be a long day.

Warp & Woof
When Evergreen had finished speaking Zena continued to sit for a moment and poke at the little yellow flowers around her boots. Finally she pulled herself to her feet and as she handed Evergreen her leather tunic she scooped her sister into her arms. Through her thin cotton shirt she could feel the terrible scar and wished with all her being that the touch of her hand would heal the marks on Evergreen's body and soul. Stepping back, Zena looked steadily into Evergreen's eyes and spoke quietly. "I understand now, your fear and anger." She glanced toward the body slung over Whisperer, "If he wasn't dead now, I would do it myself, and all the tribe and Rome be damned." Zena sighed deeply and continued, "I almost envy you your memories, as bad as they are. I can remember nothing of my life before I came to the Amazons. Something comes back deep in the night to torture me in my dreams, but I can't grasp it. I have nothing but the life we led with our sisters. I know this one thing though, I have come to trust you as if we were blood sisters and your battle is mine. If you want to ride into the jaws of Caesar's legions or take on the Amazon Queen I will ride with you, if you want me to." Zena turned and started toward Ergo keeping in her own heart the sense that she had lost her anchor. "If Evergreen has a blood sister, then what does this do to the only family I ever had?" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ EvergreenLM - 01:37pm May 15, 2002 ET (#127 of 330) "To Conquer Others is to Know Power...to Conquer Yourself is to Know the Way"
Leaving It All Behind
Evergreen pulled the leather tunic over her head. She spoke not a word. She sat down on the ground, laced her boots, and looked over to where Justinian still hung over Whisperer's saddle.
Evergreen extended her hand to Zena, " Help me up".
She stood looking at her friend before speaking. " Zena, what I have said remains in this place as so shall my father. Help me take him down from the saddle. I will leave him here, and with him the past. It is over for us."
Zena and Evergreen took Justinian down, moved him into the forest and covered him with rocks from the creek bank. Evergreen removed her sword from its sheath and anchored it in the rocks.
As they walked back to the horses, Evergreen stopped, turned to Zena and with renewed resolved said,
"Now take me back to the camp. I will face whatever waits for me there. You must swear on our friendship that my history remains buried beneath the rocks with Justinian. We will not speak of it again."
Zena started to protest. Evergreen turns saying, "NO! You must promise!" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ zena - 09:59pm May 15, 2002 ET (#128 of 330) "Agere Sequitur Esse"
Remember Nothing
Now take me back to the camp. I will face whatever waits for me there. You must swear on our friendship that my history remains buried beneath the rocks with Justinian. We will not speak of it again."
Zena started to protest. Evergreen turned to her saying, "NO! You must promise!" "All right, I promise for what is sworn is sworn," Zena replied slowly. They turned toward the horses and Zena indicated with her hand the direction they had to travel. "We have about two hours hard riding and we will be there. By now they have started preparation for the war dance and I need to be one with that spirit. By the way, can you teach me that little hopping step you do during the dance?" "By Terpsichore, NOT NOW," Evergreen grinned, appreciating her friend's attempt to lighten the seriousness of the situation. "Let's go."
Evergreen left the stream bed first, without a backward glance but Zena lingered for a moment and gazed at the pile of rocks that hid Justinian's body. "The past is not left so easily I'm afraid. May my sworn oath not be the death of both of us," Zena thought. She urged Ergo to a gallop and they rode hard until they entered the Amazon forest.
Through the quiet forest Evergreen and Zena walked their horses, having given the Amazon sign for peace (hands clasped overhead). Although no one appeared they could feel the eyes of the sentries locked on them. Finally they came into a clearing and saw the preparations for battle under way. A young Amazon approached and delivered the message they they were to report to Queen Saxy and the senior officers immediately. The two friends sprinted to the hut and were escorted in by a guard.
Zena and Evergreen bowed their heads and Zena greeted the queen. "My Queen, my sister and I have returned and we are ready to do as you ask." She looked up, noticing the absence of Lucystar, and waiting for the word of the supreme authority.

------------------------------------------------------------------------ saxgoddess25 - 01:15am May 16, 2002 ET (#129 of 330) I have the soul of a bard and the heart of a warrior. My vengeance is swift and complete.
Queen Saxy sat at her place, listening with half an ear as the senior amazons argued with each other over everything that she'd told them. The number of soldiers on their way from Rome, the capture and subsequent murder of the Roman Senator Justinian, the actions of the Roman slave known as Puella.
Passing a hand across her eyes, she almost groaned. Her eyes hurt and she wanted nothing more than to lay her head on a soft patch of ground and sleep until her troubles had passed. But that was not to be. She had just refocused her attention on the squabbling Amazons when a young runner appeared at her side. "My Queen, Zena and Evergreen have just passed the outer sentinels. They should be here presently."
The queen sighed and sent the runner away with instructions that they were to be brought before her immediately. She called for silence and all eyes turned to her again. "Evergreen and Zena are coming in," she informed them simply.
Conversation burst out again with a vengeance. A short time later the door opened and the two women were escorted in. Both women bowed their heads and Zena, after taking stock of the Amazons surrounding them, spoke, "My Queen, my sister and I have returned and we are ready to do as you ask."
Saxy nodded, somewhat saddly. A part of her had hoped that this decision could have been taken out of her hands, but that was not to be. Protocal must be followed. She looked to Evergreen and the amazon returned her stare without fear. "Evergreen, I have heard stories of your actions. A council has been called for dawn tomorrow at which time you will be allowed to speak in your own defense. Zena, I would also hear your words in defense of your sister, for I know that you would make yourself heard whether I asked or not. Evergreen will be held under guard until such time as the council reaches a decision. I trust that you will not try to escape, as you've had ample opportunity to do so before now. Is all of this clear?"
"Yes, my Queen," each replied in turn.
"Good. Guard," The guard on the inside of the door stepped forward and ushered Evergreen out of the hut. Zena lingered for a moment, but a gesture from the queen sent her out after her friend. Saxy looked tiredly around at the amazons gathered before her. "That's all for now. I'll be in my tent if I'm needed. Make sure that it's an emergency before you disturb me." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ saxgoddess25 - 01:31am May 16, 2002 ET (#130 of 330) I have the soul of a bard and the heart of a warrior. Some time later Saxy sat in her tent, unable to sleep despite the aching of her eyes. A candle burned in the gloom and she stared into it, the scroll before her all but forgotten. She didn't even hear when the door opened and so when a hand touched her shoulder, she jolted back to herself, her sword half drawn before she could see who the hand belonged to.
"You really shouldn't do that you know," she told her second with a small chuckle. "I wouldn't want you to lose a hand."
Lucystar must have noticed the tension in the queen's shoulder because she began to massage them gently as she replied. "I'll be careful in future." She smiled at the queen behind her back. "I saw Zena and Evergreen. What news?"
"Mmmmmm. There will be a council at dawn. Until then, I just don't know. How's the head?"
"It's fine. I would have been back sooner but I was talking with Joxcenia."
"That's okay. I'm just glad you're here. We've got a lot to talk about." Saxy felt herself slowly relaxing as Lucystar worked the kinks out of her back. "As much as I love what you're doing there," she said teasingly, "why don't you have a seat? I need to talk through tomorrow's council with you."
Lucystar sat down in the chair to the queen's left and looked into the tall woman's tired blue eyes. "You should get some sleep."
Saxy gave a sheepish grin as she met her second's gaze. "A queen's work is never done."
______________________________________________________ Lucystar1 - 07:02am May 16, 2002 ET (#131 of 330)
A Second's Work Is Never Done Either.
Knowing her Queen was waiting for her, Lucystar ended her talk with Joxcenia. Hoping that Saxy was resting, she quietly entered the hut and in the candlelight saw her Queen sitting at the table, battle plans in front of her.
It was obvious from Saxy's posture that she felt the weight of all that was yet to come upon her. Familiar with the hunch of Saxy's shoulders, Lucystar knew the battle plans would have to wait. Coming around behind Saxy, she gently puts her hands on the shoulders knotted with pain.
"I'll be careful in the future" Lucystar says as Saxy sheaths your sword. Lucystar smiles at her queen and begins to work the kinks and knots from the broad shoulders that will bear the weight of tomorrow's decisions.
Finally feeling the tension slip away Saxy askes her to sit beside her. Seeing the pain and weariness in those blue eyes, she tells her "you should get some rest." And as Lucystar expected, her queen and best friend turns aand says, "a Queen's work is never done."
Not intending to fail in her next task she fixes her eyes on Saxy and says "If a queen's work is never done, then we know the work will still be there in the morning." Taking Saxy's hand pulling her up out of the chair "If you get some rest now, than you'll be able to face tomorrow's challenges with a clearer mind."
Protesting, Queen Saxy insists "I don't, no, we don't have time for rest. When this is over we will rest." Thinking to herself "Gods, she can be one stubborn woman." OK, time for Plan B.
"I'll make you a deal, Lay down on your cot and if you promise to sleep, I will wake you in three candlemarks." They stare at each other for a few brief moments, but Lucystar knows she's won this small battle. Leading Saxy to the cot, Lucystar sits down and leans against the wall and motions her friend to lay down and put her head in her lap. Grinning Lucystar teases the queen "You don't think I was going to leave you here alone, now did you." Anoher grin "I want prove that you sleep."
Realizing that she's been outfoxed by her second, Saxy does as asked. Almost before her heads settles in Lucystar's lap she is asleep. In the candlelight we see Lucystar brush a loose strand of hair from her friend's face and smiles to herself. "Rest now, my dear friend, we will all need you strength and guidance to face what lies ahead." And with a finally sign, Lucystar slips into her own sleep,

------------------------------------------------------------------------ xwpfan - 01:43pm May 16, 2002 ET (#132 of 330)
An Anguished Night...
Queen Saxy had called a meeting of her senior Amazons, but it might as well have been with children. Chaos reigned, there was mass confusion each Amazon had a different story to tell, a different complaint, and a different number to report.
I looked around, there was Lurker Sue, Donna and Cyane listening and watching intently as the debate grew as to when and if Evergreen should stand before the council.
I hadn't noticed Phalon standing in the corner earlier, but she appeared to almost be absorbing people, intently watching and reading the facial expressions. I wondered what she was reading in mine.
Of course, there was no need to wonder what what was going on in little Gabbyfan's mind as she passionately argued against putting Evergreen on trial.
The meeting ended with only two facts decided; one we were to follow Amazon protocol and law . Evergreen was to be tried before the council at dawn and that no matter the result, we must resume our attack on the Romans.
Before the meeting ended, I had my chance to ask for an audience with Queen Saxy that I had earlier longed for, but now I chose not to because I no longer posed a clarity of thought. I no longer knew what I wanted to request or even say.
Initially I had wanted to talk to Queen Saxy about Puella and her mysterious necklace. My priorities had since then changed. Evergreen killing Justinian pushed concerns about Puella to the back of my mind.
So instead, I left the meeting and found an isolated spot to think and to reflect. I built myself a small fire and sat lost in thought mesmerized by the flames and my own guilt.
It was bothering me that I had called for Evergreen to be judged. Had it not been for me she would have never had an opportunity to kill Justinian. It was my failure. I had failed to realize that there might be bad blood between them. I could of sent someone besides his flesh and blood to get his signature.
My emotions, my anger had caused me not to think things out. I could only see that Evergreen had killed Justinain. In that moment all I could think was that Evergreen had to pay for ruining the plan!Justinain was the enemy, a Roman Senator but to me he had been the cornerstone to our having an advantage against the Romans.
Truth was I was my own undoing, there once was a time when I would have sensed the bad blood between Justinian and Evergreen, but of late my insticts seemed to be failing me. Maybe I was losing my way.
The moon was now high in the sky and it was shining it's light down on me,like it was illuminating my way to see my many mistakes.
I closed my eyes and thought back to when Evergreen had been attacked. Tears filled my eyes as I remembered how helpless she had seemed lying on that liter on the way back to Cyrene's.
Had I not myself been moved to swear revenge against whoever had attacked her?
Perhaps my instincts had failed there too. After all, there was still a chance that when I trusted Sue that I placed trust in her attacker.
As for Evergreen breaking Amazon laws or protocols; Had not I broken Amazon protocol when I invited Lurker Sue to join us. Had I not broken Amazon law when I exacted revenge and spilled Puella's blood when I stabbed her?
How could I possibly stand in judgment of Evergreen? I was no better, I could not claim not to have blood on my hands or heart.
Yes, she had jeopardized our plans and maybe our lives, but perhaps she may of saved us from an unknown risk... it also could be that she had exacted her own revenge against this Roman, our sworn enemy for unknown cause?
I stirred the embers of the fire, night would soon be passing into day. The breaking of this new day would decide Evergreen's fate and possibly our own. I still had no answer to the burning question inside of me. What do I do about Evergreen?
------------------------------------------------------------------------ gabbyfan4ever - 09:07pm May 16, 2002 ET (#133 & 134 of 330)
Little Gabbyfan and Phalon had made it back to the Amazon camp with no trouble, other than the fact that Gabbyfan had to be carried on a make-shift stretcher due to her fever. However, once she was back at the camp among her sisters, the little Amazon quikly regained her strength, needing only a trip to the hospice and some sleep.
After getting all the rest she would allow herself, Gabbyfan awaited the return of Zena. She comptemplated the words her mentor had told her before she left in search of Evergreen; we should act not react. These wise words Gabbyfan knew were often told by the great Warrior Princess Xena to those around her. THe fragile trust Gabbyfan had towards Evergreen had been shattered after she saw EG strike Zena. However, after much thought, Gabbyfan no longer left any malice towards her. She thought EG must be feeling as much pain as she had felt after the Romans killed her own family. Now all the littlest Amazon wanted was the return of her new family Zena, and Evergreen safely accompaning her.
Sure enough, after what seemed like and eternity, word spread throughout the camp that Zena and Evergreen had returned and were having counsel with the Queen.
Gabbyfan waited in anticipation to see Zena once she was free. As soon and the little Amazon caught sight of her, she ran as fast as she could and practically jumped into her new mothers arms like a child. The warrior chuckled and asked good naturedly if that was any way for a warrior to act. After checking to make sure she was kidding little gabbyfan only hugged her harder.
Later that night the senior Amazons had a counsel concerning the fate of Evergreen, and Gabbyfan was able to attend. Being the good girl she was, and knowing her place, the young Amazon awaited her turn to speak. To Zena's suprise and pride gabbyfan took to Evergreen's defense once allowed to speak. She thought that EG had done so much for the tribe, that she did not deserve to be put on trial. She told the other Amazons that Evergreen was in so much pain, and that she did what she thought she had to when she killed her father. Speaking of EG's pain made her relive the pain still so fresh on Gabbyfans own mind.
Nonetheless, Gabbyfan's Zena's, and EG's other supporters plea's were to no avail. Evergreen would stand trial for her deeds. Gabbyfan would not leave Zena's side, and she saw the pain and uncertainty on her face. Gabbyfan felt the same uncertainty in her own heart about what Evergreens fate will be.

Dreams of the Past
Phalon had been allowed to attend the tribal counsel meeting because she had been witness to Evergreen's "crime", not because she was an Amazon. She held her tongue, knowing that no matter what she said, these women had a very strict code of honour, and to break that code usually meet with severe punishment. But with Evergreen, the case was not so clear cut. She killed Justinian, yes, but was he not the sworn enemy of the Amazons, who had vowed to destroy the entire Amazon nation? In addition, Evergreen was admired. For she possessed the qualities every Amazon strives for - wisdom, courage, and unwavering loyalty. No, Phalon did not need to speak up on Evergreen's behalf, she knew the trial's outcome would be a fair one.
After the meeting, Phalon wandered away from camp. She needed to have some time alone to collect her thoughts. The night air was cool, with a slight breeze rustling the leaves overhead. It was the kind of night Phalon most enjoyed. Soon she came to the edge of the treeline, to a small hill overlooking a meadow. The moon was high and the stars bright. Phalon sat down to reflect.

The guards took Evergreen to the hut that had been quickly erected for use as a jail. There, they took up their positions at the door with their spears crossed over the opening. Zena knew it was forbidden to speak to Evergreen but she could not leave without making an attempt. Dawn was such a long time away. Gabbyfan followed Zena closely, and looked up anxiously into her face, waiting for some sign that all would be restored to it's previous state.
They walked a short distance into the gathering twilight and Zena slipped behind a tree, pulling Gabbyfan with her. She gave the sign for silence and the came up behind the prison hut. Zena opened a hole with her dagger and whispered to Evergreen who came to the other side of the wall. "Let me free from my oath," Zena begged. "If they knew what he had done..."
"No. You promised me on our friendship and I hold you to the promise," Evergreen whispered. "And you swore an oath to me not ever to die on me again. What about that?" Zena returned. In the darkness Zena could just make out Evergreen's bowed head. "Maybe it won't come to that. Is Gabbyfan with you?", Evergreen asked. Zena stepped back and her family spoke briefly to each other but she could not hear what was said. There was movement nearby and Zena quickly took Gabbyfan's hand and led her back around the tree. She put an arm around her shoulders and gave her a squeeze, telling her softly, "I'm so proud of you. You spoke out for what you think is right, even faced with these warrior women. You are a woman of courage, and I would be proud to adopt you as my daughter if you and the Queen will allow it." Gabbyfan blushed and nodded. "What can you do for Evergreen?", Gabbyfan asked. Zena's reply was short: "Everything I can."
They parted there, Zena sending Gabbyfan to the entrance of the hospice so that she could see the dancing and still be safe and Zena to the huge fire that was beginning to light the darkening sky. Retreating into her feathered ceremonial headdress, Zena let herself become one with the fire, the drums, the other warriors. The drumming went on and on filling her body with a new beat: WAR. All the Amazons became as one, a great nation, a nation of warrior women with one objective. DEATH TO ROME. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ phalon - 11:42pm May 16, 2002 ET (#137 of 330)
Phalon gazed into the starry night and replayed a dream she had had the night prior. A girl. A burning village. Screams. Pain. The same images but more defined - more real.
Phalon could she the girl was wearing a necklace. THE necklace. The flames reflected an eerie cast in it's smooth stone. She see the girl could not move or speak. She could feel her intense conflicting emotions. Emotions of seething hatred and undying love, all directed at one being. The woman she called "mother". The woman who brought her to a place and a people with whom she did not belong. The woman who now lie slumped in the dirt, dead.
She saw her half-sister standing nearby. She wanted to run into her sister's arms, but she could not. Both fear and pride kept her motionless.
'Take That one! That one only! Kill all the rest', a voice bellowed. She knew that voice, the voice of a man she'd thought she'd never see again. Father!
Then the unthinkable. She saw his blade strike her sister. First on the shoulder, then on her back. NO! she screamed again and again. NO! But the words did not form. The only sounds were the screams in her mind. NO! NO! NO!
She felt herself being thrown on a horse, and carried away into the deep black night. Then...Darkness...

Dreams of the Past (part III)
Phalon held her hand in front of her face. The necklace's mark still burnt into her palm. By the moonlight, she could see the bull's image there. She traced it's outline slowly with her finger. Over and over and over...
...She had been sold as a slave to a wealthy family by a man who was her own flesh and blood. A man who could not bear to see a daughter who was raised by a people for whom his hatred for was indescribeable.
Her masters were kind enough people. She was not grossly mistreated. Her father had seen to that. Any excessive cruelty and brutality and her father's wrath would be brought down upon this house until all within it's stone walls were destroyed.
She was allowed to keep her necklace, and often it brought her comfort. The cold silver, the smooth stone. She would trace the image over and over, so often the fine details were worn smooth.
One day, as she was doing this, she felt the hairs on the back of her neck prickle. She turned to she a man staring at her from the doorway of her room. The kitchen servant.
"Your mother did you well to give you that necklace so many years ago", he said.
"You knew my mother? My REAL mother?!"
"I knew of her, yes my child. I know of many things. I SEE many things."
"Your mother was right when she said the necklace will give you safe passage, but she did not know to what extent that would be. You see, child, that necklace is very old, as ancient as the hills and the sheep that roam them. It has been lost, found, fought over, and stolen more times than you and I have days left to live."
"Keep it always at your heart. It will protect you from great danger for your's is a course filled with many a peril hence forth. There will come a time when you will need it's powers. Ask only once and choose wisely, little one."
"How will I know when that time has come?"
"You will know, child. Now, those things which are too painful to remember, best be forgotten." With that, he put his hand upon her forehead. A flash of white light, as that of a lightening bolt flashing across the night sky, filled the room. When the light faded, a radiance shone from the talisman's emerald stone.
The girl remembered nothing.

"Zena, there are some things in this life that go beyond you or I."
We were brought together by a force stronger than human intervention. We have stood by each other through many challenges. But this battle is for me alone."
"I know what it means to be an Amazon, I AM an Amazon and would not discredit my mother by expecting any less from the council."
"How could I know that I may loose my life by the decison of those I would freely give it away for their protection."
"And with a strong hand to the side of her friend's face, a glance to Little Gabby,Evergreen smiles and softly says, " It is What it Is, and that is all you need to know."
"Please go now before you are found here."
Little Dog has quietly entered the tent. He flattens himself out on the ground at Evergreen's feet and looks up not understanding why his benefactor is not free and camping beside the water with Zena and Little Gabby. Evergreen kneels and brushes the entire length of his coat with her hand and gently strokes his ears.
"Zena, take Little Dog with you. Make sure he stays with Little Gabby. Keep them both safe."
They parted there, Zena sending Gabbyfan to the entrance of the hospice so that she could see the dancing and still be safe and Zena to the huge fire that was beginning to light the darkening sky.
Standing alone, Evergreen says to no one there,"You, the true keeper of the necklace, you know what it will take to save me. But will you find the courage my sister?"

girlpower - 03:02am May 17, 2002 ET (#140 of 330) Courage is not the absence of fear..but the strength to conquer it.
Puella's mission III
Sitting in the shade Puella fondled the signet ring that belonged to Senator Justinian. Seeing him at the makeshift camp, tied up I couldn’t help but concentrate on his features. He was so familiar, but I don’t know where from. Maybe my family entertained him once. Then again he is a Senator I could have seen him anywhere. Lost in my thoughts, I nodded of to sleep.
The next thing I see a girl standing in the middle of a burning village. I can hear loud noises and screams but no voices. The smells of smoke and blood overpowering my senses. The sound of hoof beats, a man with the face of Senator Justinian, High atop a horse, sword in hand. Lying on the ground a woman and a girl. The sensation of flying through the fields. I awoke with a start. Something new, the face of Justinian? Why? No time to think about it, I must be on my way.
Puella mounted her horse and began her mission again. A feeling of urgency floods my senses. On the outskirts of the camp I hear soldiers. Heading into a patch of woods, I dismounted and tied the horse to a tree branch. Climbing a tree to get a better view, I survey the soldiers nearby. There are only a few, one of them I recognize he is the young soldier who tended to little Gabbyfan, in Justinian’s camp. It seems I have been blessed with good luck. He will recognize me as well. I have my way to gather a bit of information before entering the camp. I climbed down from the tree and grabbed the reins of my horse then headed off to the soldiers…

Puella's mission IV
As I approached the soldiers, they pulled out their swords and came at me. “There is the slave girl who left with the Amazons. Soon after, the Senator was missing.” A soldier said. I raised my arms up in surrender, and spoke. “That is why I am here, I must deliver a message to Caesar.” Reaching into my pouch I retrieved the parchment and the signet ring. The soldiers surrounded me. The leader then grabbed for the parchment. I pulled it away. He attempted to strike me but I blocked his blow, grabbing his arm and twisting it around behind him, taking his sword at the same time. All eyes grew large, “I was directed to give this only to Caesar.” Holding their superior’s own sword to his throat. “You know me soldier” I spoke, nodding to the young soldier. “Tell them I am not Amazon.” Quietly he stepped forward and spoke, “She is not.”
“Take me to Caesar, it is a matter of great importance, and I have no time to waste.” In a whisper the superior spoke, “We can not, he is not here and we can not take you to his location. If you give the parchment to me I will be sure it gets to him.” I stared at the soldier I observed that day in the woods. With the right motivation I can count on his success. “I will give it to him, what is your name?” I motioned towards the young soldier. “Lares” he answered. “I will entrust this to Lares. If anything happens to him, or anything goes wrong in his mission, I will hold you responsible.” Pressing the sword hard on his throat. The superior agreed, so Lares approached. He reached out for the parchment and the ring, I pulled him close and said, “Gabbyfan’s life depends on this as well.” Letting go, I made sure he understood. Slowly, I pulled the sword away from the superior’s throat. Quickly, I ran to my horse and rode off. Making sure none of the soldier’s followed I made my way towards the tree line that I was supposed to meet Xwpfan…

The grey light of predawn was seeping in as Lucystar opened her eyes. Looking down, she saw that Saxy was still asleep, a smile touching her lips. Reaching down, she caressed Saxy's cheek lightly and was rewarded as her friend woke and stared at her fuzzily. "Good morning," LS said with a small grin.
"Has it been three candlemarks already?" was the mumbled reply.
"Something like that. It's nearly dawn."
The Queen's eyes flew open. "It's what?" Saxy looked around frantically. "Oh, by all the Gods how could you let me sleep that long? I've got to get ready." Lucystar sighed as the queen scrambled up and made her way across the room to the basin to splash herself with cold water.
Saxy moved quickly around the room, dragging out her ceremonial garb for the council meeting that was rapidly approaching. She was in the middle of unlacing her shirt when a discrete cough came from the corner. Saxy turned to her second with raised eyebrow.
"I think I'll just be leaving now, if that's okay."
Despite her hurry, a wicked grin touched the Queen's eyes. She didn't voice her thoughts out loud however, simply nodded. "I'll see you at the council."

Back at the treeline
Puella rides like the wind in the direction of her meeting point. I don’t know why, but something is pulling me there. Many times this feeling has saved my life. I know that I should have completed the mission and given the parchment to Caesar, but I know from this feeling that, there is something more important calling. Lares will deliver it, that I am sure. Never underestimate a boy trying to save a girl.
By nightfall I pass the trees where I sat in the shade, “no time to stop girl,” I said while leaning forward and petting her neck. By the time the moon was high in the sky I was approaching the tree line, that Xwpfan instructed me to meet her. No one is there, waiting for me. I should have known she would not be here. Overcome by intense emotion, how could I trust another? Haven’t I learned that lesson by now. I start walking. There is the sound of water nearby. I could use a bath right now. I left my horse to wander. She needs the rest.
Approaching the bank of the stream, I start to undress and make my way into the water. I began wading in, it is cool so I jump in all at once. Swimming around a bit I begin to think about my dream from this afternoon. Why would I suddenly see the face of Justinian? He meant nothing to me, yet it seems he means everything. I have tried to piece together my memories as a child. Yet nothing has effected my memory as much as the face of the Senator. I must find him and question him. He may have the information I have been searching for all my life. Who am I?
Chills take over my body, I’ve been in the water too long. Quickly I walk up the bank and retrieve my clothes. Putting them on I see something, a large pile of rocks. I walk up near it. It looks like someone has been laid to rest here. That is very strange. This is Amazon territory, and they don’t bury their dead, they burn them. So who would this be out here near the water? Surrounding the rocks were two sets of footprints, some hoof prints and drag marks. Obviously this person was carried on a horse, then drug here to be buried. I walk closer to the burial site. A sudden feeling overwhelms me. It would have to be a Roman, buried here, and there has only been one Roman here, that I know of, Justinian. I walk closer to the burial site. Sticking out of the rocks is a sword. I’ve seen this sword, it is Evergreen’s. Rage takes me over.
He could have answered all my questions… ------------------------------------------------------------------------ xwpfan - 09:19am May 18, 2002 ET (#144 of 330)
2 lives in the balance
I watched the fire turn to mere embers. Somewhere in the night I has lost track of my environment and had only listened to my thoughts.
But as dawn approached, my thoughts waned and I became aware of my sisters again. I became keenly aware of beating drums... The whole forest had to be able to hear it and feel it. There was No doubt the Amazons were preparing for battle. For WAR.
My body could could feel the vibrations of the drums as they were beating. My heart quickened, the pounding in my chest grew stronger and louder, it felt as though my heart could jump out of my chest. Thump, thump.. thump thump.. The rhythmic beat grew with fury and force with each passing moment. My heart was beating harder and faster to match the eerie rhythm.
I walked back towards the center of camp. There were my sisters dressed in full ceremonial garb, hands out stretched as they danced in worship to Artemis.
As I watched them dance and sway, I felt my body unconsciously join in ... Ceremonial dancing was always exhilarating and life affirming, but this time it seemed so much more... I felt my anguish melt into joy as I began to dance.
As I danced my head began to feel lighter like it was animated into was a dizzy conciousness..a hypontic state somewhere between blacking out and divine revelation.
It was in that moment, the briefest of moments that I felt as if we were of one body, one spirit, and of one mind as we danced. I didn't want to moment to stop, ever.
The moment was quickly broken for as I swayed,I saw a small tuft of pink beginning to rise in the East. The shadow of the moon lingered in the sky, a reminder of the night... stopped swaying and blankly stared at the moon.. it was trying to remind me of something of someone...Puella!!
I remembered that I had told Puella to return to camp after 2 moons.. but so much had happened since I had given that order that I had put her out of my head. After Justinian was killed, we had moved our camp and Evergreen was of course about to stand trial.
Immediately, conflict rose in me, could I allow her to be killed or wander aimlessly in search of us? The answer was clearly no, as much bad blood that had been between us, I could not allow her die.Not this way anyway. Not under my direct orders.
I now stood there frozen, the realization that now two lives of people that I know were hanging in the balance of my actions ...
I chose not disturb or endanger anyone else, I quietly left my sisters who were still dancing.
I wanted desperately to talk to Queen Saxy, but I had no time to wait for a meeting. Instead, I quickly scrawled a note:
Queen Saxy- It is in all humbleness and in service of my fellow Amazons that I miss this tribal council.I know that I was the one who called Evergreen before the council. I apologize.
However, to stay, puts another life at risk, one who is under my orders. I must find the Roman slave girl Puella, I think she is more than what she seems... more than that I cannot say.all I know is that cannot not let her perish or wander aimlessly in the woods because of me, because of my orders.
I promise to return before the end of council,if humanly possible. If you will allow it I wish to speak to the council,if possible.
signed XWPfan
I gave the note to one of the young Amazons, I told her it is Crucial Queen Saxy sees this before the council begins.
With that done I mounted my horse and rode as hard and as fast as my horse could carry me..
In my mind, I could not escape the irony that I was now out to save a life I had threatened to take so many times.

------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lucystar1 - 02:04pm May 18, 2002 ET (#145 of 330)
OUTSIDE THE QUEEN'S HUT
Lucystar quickly steps through the door and once outside the hut leans against the wall. She has a bewildered and somewhat flushed look on her face. Putting her hand up to her cheek she feels the heat rising up. "Gods, where did that come from?" Suddenly it feels like her legs won't hold her up and she slides down the wall at her back.
Looking around, making sure no one notices her, she leans her head back and sighs. "What has come over me. What came over her. I can't believe she was going to undress in front of me like that. I can't believe I was going to let her." Lucystar knew that if she hadn't cleared her throat Saxy would have continued, knowing full well she was still standing there. "This is NOT the time for flights of fancy, or Cupid's arrow." she scolds herself. Touching her cheek, she could feel the heat leaving her face. Then she remembers the previous night and the sight of her queen, her best friend, "she IS my best friend, isn't she?" Upon entering the Queen's hut, the sight of Saxy starring into the candle's flame, lost in a struggle of thoughts, touched her heart deeply. Without even realizing it, or more importantly remembering the danger of it, she had crossed to Saxy and began to massage her shoulders to give what comfort she could. Lucystar blushes as she remembers the exchange of words, of her error, but more importantly, of the feel of the queen's skin under her fingertips.
Thoughts surged forward to the image of Saxy's head in her lap and the look of peace that crossed the weary face. It so moved Luscystar that she had reached out and brushed a stray lock of hair off Saxy's forehead. The last thing she remembered was a feeling of contentment as her eyes closed and she slipped into the Land of Dreams.
Shaking the image from her mind, Lucystar stands and brushes down her leathers. Taking a deep breath she composes herself and turns toward the sound of the beating drums. Drums used to prepare the Amazon warriors for battle. Drums used to instill a oneness within the tribe.
At that moment, Queen Saxy emerges from her hut dressed in her full ceremonial leathers. A slight intake of air, betrays the effect this has on Lucystar as she is caught up short by the the sight of this powerful and regal looking woman. At hearing the tiny gasp, Saxy turns her head and looks at Lucystar. She smiles to herself enjoying for a moment the effect she is having on her second. Catching Lucystar's stare, Saxy raises an eyebrow and locks eyes with her. What passes between those two pair of eyes startles both woman. Then the moment passes and the importance of what now awaits the Queen and her second at the Tribal Council breaks the spell. With a nod of her head Queen Saxy, Leader of the Amazon Nation, askes her second to come to her side and together they stride toward the beating drums and the Tribal Council that awaits the trial of one of their sisters. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ saxgoddess25 - 09:24pm May 18, 2002 ET (#146 of 330) I have the soul of a bard and the heart of a warrior. My vengeance is swift and complete.
As the Queen changed into her ceremonial garb she couldn't help the smirk that graced her lips. She'd never seen her second move that fast. Quite amusing really. Saxy attributed the joyous feeling in her heart to the humour of the situation. Nothing more, nope. Finally getting everything adjusted to her satisfaction, she slipped the breast dagger into its sheath, just in case. Grabbing her plumed headdress, she stepped out of the hut.
Hearing a soft gasp behind her, she turned to find Lucystar staring, an strange expression on her face. The Queen drew herself to her full height with a little leer...until she saw the look in the other woman's eyes. Her heart skipped a beat, then resumed, thumping in time to the drums. Caught without words, and knowing there was no time left to explore this feeling, she nodded to her second, asking her to come along toward the council. Lucystar complied and they strode off toward the circle of dancing women.
The drums beat in a hypnotic rhythm and Saxy found herself getting caught up in their primal tempo. She hadn't realized that she'd started swaying in time with them until she felt a soft hand on her arm. Turning again to her Second, the Queen sighed and made her way forward to her throne. The council was about to begin.

The Reckoning
The drums filled the night, filled the bodies and minds and hearts of the Amazon Nation. Tongues of flame lept to the starry sky and seemed to caress the full moon that hung just above the trees of the surrounding forest. The glades and clearings echoed with the repetitive chants that filled an Amazon heart with courage and all living things on this night hid and waited for dawn. Zena had danced for a long time and had satisfied her need to be one with the spirit of war. Deep into the night she withdrew from the light and heat of the fire to sit by herself and sharpen her sword. As she drew the stone over the blade the scraping sound joined the tempo of the song and the drum and Zena thought, "Whoever I am I was born for this." The rythmn freed her mind to search for the defense that she needed for Evergreen, her sister, her friend.
As the sun began to rise she saw the Queen's second come out of the Queen's hut and sink to the ground. Lucystar rose quickly unaware that Zena had witnessed what had happened. The Queen stepped from the doorway and the two stood looking at each other for a moment. Stopping briefly at the fire, they strode toward the area that had been cleared for the council, a half ring of logs for seats and on a raised platform in the center, the throne. Queen Saxy mounted the platform and stood in a strong stance, drawn up to her full height with the feathered mask in the queen's colors tossed back on her head. Her second stood just behind her, also wearing the queen's colors and holding the staff with the carved bird head on the top, the symbol of power in the tribe. At each side of the throne, guards were taking their places armed with sword and spear.
Zena's heart fluttered as she watching the scene unfolding and she steadied herself by pushing her sword into the ground and leaning her head on the pommel. She breathed deeply with the sound of the drum. All her world, all that had ever been of value to her hung here in this frozen moment. And then the staff came down like a clap of thunder silencing the drummers. Lucystar called the women of the council and the tribe from the fire. One by one they pulled down their feathered masks, approached and took their places around the Queen. The rest of the sisters stood behind them in total silence and at a respectful distance. All was still, only the logs snapped and crackled as the embers died in what was left of the great fire. Even the birds of the forest held their dawn greeting.
Queen Saxy gave a short gesture to her second and Lucystar called "Bring the prisoner",slamming the staff down again with the order. Up at the hospice Little Gabbyfan awoke with a start and scrubbing the sleep from her eyes took in the drama before her.
Zena stood on shaking legs but gathered her compose with each step that she took toward the council. By the time she had reached the opening of the circle she had sheathed her sword and her face was calm and serene. The guards walked on each side of Evergreen and guided her to the platform. Zena came and stood just behind her and knew that although Evergreen never turned her head she would feel her there. They both bowed and greeted Queen Saxy in unison, "My Queen." Queen Saxy nodded and sat down on her throne, her second taking the position to her right hand. All eyes took in each movement and all ears waited for her to speak.

The Army of the Dispossessed
The Romans lie in a dangerous position the fierce Amazom warriors on one flank and the sleeping enemy The Army of the Dispossessed <TAD> on the other.
Our journey has been a long and perilous adventure but an oath sworn is to be honored no matter the cost. The Sea leg of this trip alone has been exciting; we fooled the Roman’s into believing that we were a Phoenician trade ship. We noted their landing site and continued to sail two days further up the coast where we landed and secured our ship hiding it in the trees. The Sea has been relaxing perhaps too relaxing my senses seem a little fuzzy this makes it difficult to relax and rest on land. I look around the sleeping group they are quite a diverse group of extraordinary people. They had been handed nothing but, pain, misery and hardship however, their reaction was to greet adversity with a smile and gleam in their eye.
A smile creeps across my face as I can still see the old fisherman who asked with a straight face “Who are you people?”
The bard spoke up and replied in the words of Euripides “We no less than deserters to the Army of the Dispossessed.”
I can’t help it the name just stuck for it so aptly applies as we are bound only by our interests and values. I see among our number slaves, captives, gladiators, wrongfully imprisoned, sympathizers, runaways, wanderers… none really alike.
My mind begins to focus on the mission at hand. We have successfully taken our freedom back from the Romans but, we had not anticipated the massive and messy uprising it would inspire. Several prominent Citizens of Rome including Senators and Caesar have fled the city. The official line was they were caring out a long planned trip to witness the crushing of a revolting people. “Want something done right do it yourself.” Caesar often said. We had tried with out success to locate any of them to meet out the justice they deserved. Puella was the only slave on our list that we failed to liberate. She left us a clue under her pillow in her quarters as she was part of the hasty retreat out of Rome. We were not quick enough to rescue her and now must combine the rescue mission with justice. Nothing is ever easy for this group yet, one must admire their perservence no matter the odds.
A wide smile and a low chuckle of satisfaction are now mine as I hear the breathing of our breakfast some thirty paces over my left shoulder. They will be happy not to have to eat fish and seaweed again today. My keen senses have returned and in a few days time the Romans won’t know what hit them.

There Are No Words That Can Speak the Truth
Evergreen in silence:
I stand before my Queen and I have no words to speak of my truth. My thoughts are racing as I look up into the face I have seen bend others to the ground with just a raise of the hand.
I am not afraid and mysteriously at peace. I am strong and will not bend even for my Queen which foolishly could seal my fate. I know without seeing that Zena is at my back and in my heart. I saw the faces of the others as I was lead to the platform. My boots made sure and deliberate sounds as I walked up the steps. No one more than I knows that I have made my home and my allegiance to these who stand to judge me.
And yet, I also know that a part of me standing before them is Roman. I cannot reconcile what I did not choose. I cannot kill it from my past. I cannot hide it under stones with the dead. It is what it is and I embrace it.
If Zena can hear my thoughts, you must honor your promise, you must honor me and our friendship by not making yourself a part of this.
Honor the ways of our mothers and the way I will be lead. Honor that which has made us one nation.

gabbyfan4ever - 02:00am May 19, 2002 ET (#150 of 233)
Little Gabbyfan had been left at the entrance of the hospice by Zena, so she could see the tribal dance. There she sat long into the night, feeling the pulse of the drums, and contemplating how much her life had changed in only a few days. She sank into the rhythem of the other Amazons, and knew that this was her new family, and if the Queen allowed it Zena would be her new mother. She missed her former family, and would fight the Romans who had taken them from her. But she would fight them with her new family, the Amazons, and protect them with her life.
Gabbyfan sat for many hours thinking these thoughts and countless others, until a nurse led her to bed. There gabbyfan soon fell asleep to the sounds of the Amazon music, and later was woken by the sound of Lucystar's staff. The trial had begun. Gabbyfan put on her boots, grabbed her staff, and joined the outer circle of Amazons surrounding the council. She wondered for what seemed like the millionth time what would become of her sister Evergreen. Gabbyfan’s eyes fell on her mother, and awaited the sound of her determined voice to take up Evergreens defense.

Phalon sat on the hilltop overlooking the meadow ruminating about her visions until the bright moonlight gave way to the first rays of the morning's sunlight.
The necklace had allowed her glimpses into someone else's past. Puella's past, of that she was sure. Phalon's dislike and distrust for the woman softened after bearing "witness", so to speak, to the anguish she had to endure as a young girl. What of her youth, if anything, did she remember now, as a grown woman? Had the mysterious man permanately erased those terrible memories from Puella's mind?
The face of mysterious man. The badly bruised and bloodied face of the man Phalon brought to Cyrene's. Were they the same face? If so, was it coincedence that he was found so close to where Puella had recently traveled? Was he still part of her life all these years later? Or was he a protector, governed by the powers in the talisman, sent to watch over her life from afar?
And what became of the half-sister? Did Justinian's sword take her life, or was she alive somewhere, perhaps searching for a part of family so brutally destroyed so long ago?
Phalon took the necklace from her pouch. She had not felt it's intense heat since the first time she had held it. It was cold now. She held it up in front of her face, letting the talisman dangle from it's silver chain interlaced between her fingers. "What secrets are stored within you? What powers are housed in your cold metal and stone facade?" she said aloud.
The rays from the sun gleamed off the emerald stone, causing it to radiate an iridescent light. She felt an intense overwhelming and undeniable desire to put the necklace on. Should she? Would it LET her? Her heart began to beat loudly in her chest. The rhythmic thumping grew louder and louder. Pounding now in her ears. Phalon realized the beat of her heart was accompanied by the beat of drums in the distance. The tribal counsel was about to begin.
"You'll have to wait", she said, almost relieved. She put the necklace safely back into her pouch. "There are more pressing matters to attend to now." She started back to camp. Though she was forbidden from attending the trial, she wanted to be nearby for her friends, for Evergreen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ girlpower - 07:13pm May 19, 2002 ET (#152 of 330) Courage is not the absence of fear..but the strength to conquer it.
Puella's search
Kneeling at the burial site, Puella tries to calm herself, but I can not take my mind off the knowledge that has been taken from me. All my life I have searched for someone who could tell me anything about my past. All I have is my necklace, reaching up to my throat, and feeling my prized possession gone, only enrages me more. I pound the dirt with my fists. Tears of anger and frustration streaming down my face. Looking up towards the sword, I rise, lean forward and yank it out of the stones. If I were an Amazon where would I set up camp? Sword in hand I walk over to where I saw the hoof prints earlier. Eyeing them closely I see the direction in which they went.
I whistled to my horse, her ears perked up and her head looked my way. “You coming?” I began walking in the direction in which the Amazon’s were heading. Looking over my shoulder I was pleased when my horse took her place by my side. I reached up and pet the side of her neck. You need a name. “How about Amica? For you are a true friend.” Jumping atop Amica they rode off to find the Amazons…

TAD Scroll of the Dumb Scout 1
The Army of the Dispossessed {TAD}
I am so glad to be back on land again my experience with the sea has not been pleasant. Of course the voyage when I lost my tongue always comes to mind as I hear the words “Let’s set sail.”
O if only my daddy could see me now. I wonder just what he would think of his little girl. The irony lies in the fact he was a Warlord and my mother his legal wife. I had an older brother who was killed in one of father’s campaigns. I loved my brother and said I’d not fight again nor, I would not be the cause for great suffering. In time my younger brother followed the path of the dead while he survived the battle he became a stranger the constant killing plotting and suspicious paranoia destroyed the sweet innocence of the brother I loved.
My father would taunt me, “Run away little one run if you think it is better out there. How far do you think you will get with the weight of your family name ever on your shoulder? You will have to fight or you will be killed. You will fight, kill and probably even enjoy it for it is in your blood it is who you are. Some day you will return here with dirty hands because there is no place left for you.”
As much as I hated him he was right about many things and I do have him to thank for my ability to plan and fight. I planned my escape and possible return some day I methodically stole weapons blankets and treasure from the house and hid them securely in an old cave. One night I rode away and have not been back. I wandered for a while just enjoying the great outdoors. In time I was forced to make a choice, I had to fight but this time it was on the right side. It felt great taking the stand to help people not like the cheap thrill of mindless slaughter and oppression.
Years later I found myself on a slave ship and planning an escape or at least an attempt. The slavers were harsh and a little more aware than I gave them credit for so in the middle of a plan they drug me to the aft of the vessel. As I was too valuable to simply toss over board as a loss they decided on another punishment. They removed my tongue well most of it now it seems funny to think that I’d need my tongue to cause a rebellion. Right on time the uprising began with the precision of a mason carving stone; those are some slave traders that only Poseidon knows where they have gone. That was perhaps on of my sweetest victories - well of course I know I can’t really taste anything.
My curse and blessing that came with the loss of my tongue is my other senses are heightened and right now that is a real problem. Tomorrow I will have to find these stinky warriors some place to clean up. We can’t go around smelling like the Romans. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ xwpfan - 02:25pm May 20, 2002 ET (#154 of 330)
Quest for Puella
Night was quickly passing into day, in front of me was the treeline that where I had instructed Puella to meet me. I surveyed the area.. no Puella..She wasn't there. There was a growing sense of urgency inside of me. I tried to calm my thoughts,I had to find Puella.
I looked down and just inches away from where I stood were fresh footprints and shoed horse prints. The horseshoe prints looked to be the work of Roman blacksmiths. I scanned the ground carefully, there were no boot prints to be found. Chances were I was on Puella's trail.
The prints lead down towards the water. Someone, perhaps Puella, had left deep imprints as if they had kneeled at the waters edge. The ground was still damp to the touch, odds were I wasn't very far behind. As I turned to remount my horse,I saw the pile of rocks, it was where we had laid Senator Justinian to rest.
Despite my need to find Puella, I felt compelled to walk over to the stones. I needed to vent and to make peace with myself for the events of the last few days.
I picked up a rock, it was cold and hard, much like the man that laid beneath. As I thrust the stone into the icy water I screamed, " I hate you! I hate everything you stood for you Roman scum! You were my sworn enemy, I am suppose to want you dead! By the Gods I wish you weren't Dead!!Your death served no purpose!Your murder has brought nothing but misery to my sisters and me. I hate you! "
I feel to the ground as I broke down crying "I am as much to blame for your death,as Evergreen. I had no idea the depth of Evergreen's anger towards you or what an arrogant jerk you were! Had you simply signed your name, you'd still be alive, your daughter, my friend Evergreen wouldn't be on trial and I sure as hell wouldn't be out here looking for Puella! "
As I spoke the name Puella,I smelled an awful stench and felt a fury of activity. I looked up and found myself surrounded. They did not look like Romans, but rather they looked like a band of despots, but they behaved more like a small army.
I closed my eyes and listened for chatter, but there was none. I opened my eyes to see a flurry of fingers, of silent gestures, they all turned their eyes to get their orders. All eyes seemed to rested on one figure. Anxious eyes awaiting the signal order to attack or capture me.
Refusing to be captured, I unsheathed my sword and swung it around to face the apparent leader of the group. I growled " I don't know who you are. But I can guarantee You do not want a piece of me. When you take on me, you take on the Amazon nation".
Their leader stepped forward and pushed down my sword. Another spoke on her behalf," Her name is Leara and We are the Army of the Dispossed. Who are you?"
I snarled back, " I am Xwpfan. I am an Amazon."
the secon moved in closer and said "If you're an Amazon, why aren't you with your sisters? Although we are new to these shores,we have heard and recognized the drum beat of War all night long?!We would count it an honor to join your war against the Romans"
I answered " You are right we are going to war! I can not offer alliances nor I can I grant you permission to join us in war, even against the Romans, that is up to my Queen."
"We heard you mention a Roman slave girl named Puella. Does your mission have anything to do with her?"
I had no desire to tell them about my Quest for Puella, that I was on a search and recovery mission but I could see the sun rising ine the East dawn was now breaking. I was fast running out of time.
I took a deep breath and said, "I am looking for a Roman slave girl Puella because I had sent her on a mission and told her to meet me here, after two moons. So let me pass, because if you don't, I'll have to make my path right through you.. No one is going to keep me from finding her."

Quest continued
I began to move forward when Leara's second said, "You sent her on a mission? Oh then you must already know she that she may be more than a Roman slave-that she maybe of Amazon blood and heritage." Leara had lunged forward to stop her second in mid-sentence but it was too late. I had heard the confimation to what I had just recently begun to suspect.
The new knowledge had me stopped dead in my tracks. Everything was clicking together in my head,I was on sensory overload. It now all made sense somehow,my inability to kill Puella, the mysterious necklace, Evergreen's anger towards Justinian.
Small fragmented memories came rushing forward. Memories so embittered with pain, they had been hard to surpress. I could not make out the whole scene in my head, but knew it was the truth, Puella was more than likely an Amazon.
I turned to Leara's second and said "I need to find Puella, and I could use your help ".. Leara nodded with agreement.
Lingering questions remained, but there would be time later to find out why they thought Puella was an Amazon and why they wanted to find her. Just what did they want with her?"
I wasn't yet ready to completely trust this Army of the dispossed. I suggested that we spilt up in order to find Puella.
I could not have them going into either of the Amazon camps old or new.. not just yet.I pointed their army in the opposite direction... away from both of the Amazon encampments.Once I saw them head off into the distance.
I headed towards the old camp..it was the most likely place for Puella to head.
Now more important then ever I had to find Puella. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ girlpower - 08:17pm May 20, 2002 ET (#156 of 330) Courage is not the absence of fear..but the strength to conquer it.
Puella's realization
As the light of dawn arrived Puella could hear something. She stopped Amica and listened. The sound of beating drums. A noise I have heard before. The beat so primal, I begin to sway. Thoughts stream through my head. The sounds of the drums, the woods, all so familiar to my heart, yet I can not figure out why in my mind. Looking down at the sword, I have clenched in my fist since I pulled it from the burial site. I can almost see Evergreen’s face. I have only just met her, yet I saw something in her eyes. Something important, something I must learn. Lost in my thoughts, I can see what haunts me over and over in my dreams. It has only been recently, since I met up with the Amazons that I have seen this vision while I am awake. I concentrate on Justinian’s face. “Father!” I scream. My own voice pulled me from my trance. In a panic I jump from Amica and begin to run. This can’t be true. I’m a slave, not a Senator’s daughter, or an Amazon. Sticking the sword into the dirt, I fall to my knees, hands clasping the sides of my head. My heart, pounding louder then the beat of the drums. Could these visions be memories? The memories I have searched for all my life. I find myself unable to move, overwhelmed by the realization that my life has all been a lie… ----------------------------------------------------------------------- zena - 10:09pm May 20, 2002 ET (#157 of 330) Blind Faith I
The regal Queen of the Amazons sat motionless on her throne in front of Zena and Evergreen for a very long time. After the customary greeting Zena had expected that the Queen would invite Evergreen to speak in her own behalf but the two seemed to be engaging in some kind of waiting game. "This sister of mine is more like her Father than she thinks," Zena thought glumly. In the stiff silence she thought she could almost Evergreen's voice warning her to honor the Amazon way and she hoped her plan would do just that.
Finally Zena lifted the toe of her boot and scraped it ever so slightly on the platform. The Queen's eyes left Evergreen and locked on Zena. Taking a deep breath to calm herself, she began, "My Queen, as the Keeper of our Code and the sister of the accused I ask that you grant me a hearing." Queen Saxy glanced at Evergreen as if to ask if she was going to speak but Evergreen shook her head slowly and Zena could see her jaw muscles clench from her position behind her. The Queen raised her hand slightly giving permission.
"My sister has committed a grievous error and a breach of the code. She lied to me and caused harm to come to me by striking me." Zena could hear the sisters in the outer ring murmur and the masked council members were nodding. "Evergreen killed her own father in anger and has brought the rath of Rome to our forest home. What you have heard is true." The sound of the crowd had taken on an angry tone. The Amazons were certainly poised for war and ready to strike where needed. "The punishment for this transgression to the Amazon Nation can be nothing less than death," Zena concluded.

There is a moment after a shock when it seems that time freezes and the sisterhood was caught there for what seemed like eternity. Then chaos reigned and there were war whoops and cries of "No" mixed together. Most painful of all for Zena was the sound of her daughter's gasp and little cry buried somewhere deep in the group. Still Evergreen did not move or speak and Zena was aware that Lucystar, second to the Queen was staring at her most intensly.
Queen Saxy looked at Zena steadily with the composure of one who bears the mantle of the leadership of a nation. "You as Keeper know the law. Death must come for Evergreen." The words betrayed nothing of the feelings in Queen Saxy's heart. "My Queen," Zena bowed, "I would ask this favor of you." "Speak it,", the Queen replied. "I ask that it be my charge to execute Evergreen, " Zena asked in a firm voice. Queen Saxy's eyebrows shot up and she leaned forward on her throne. "Is this truly what you want?" , she asked. "I do ask it of you, it is my right as Keeper. I am one of our best archers and I can send an arrow to her heart, sparing her any further suffering." "Then it shall be as you wish. Take her to the stake," the Queen nodded to the guards.
As they came down from the platform Evergreen did not look back and Zena's own heart was being crushed within her. She saw Little Gabbyfan in the crowd and took her arm. "Run to the armory, and tell Aphrodesia I need my bow and one of my own arrows," she hissed to Gabbyfan. By the time the group had moved to the stripped tree near the hospice Gabbyfan had returned with the bow and a single arrow feathered with Zena's colors, gold and green trim. Evergreen scowled at the guards who were attempting to tie her to the stake. "I will not run away", she growled. The guards and the crowd stood back and Zena took a bow stance looking for only one second into Evergreen's eyes where she saw complete trust. That gave her the strength to fit the arrow to the string and slowly pull it taut. She aimed at Evergreen's heart and let the arrow go. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ zena - 10:58pm May 20, 2002 ET (#159 of 330) "Agere Sequitur Esse"
Blind Faith III
The arrow whistled through the air like a leathal golden bird and hit Evergreen directly at her heart. The impact slammed her back against the tree and she slid slowly down to the ground as her legs gave out.
Zena brought the bow down, moving only her arms and remained perfectly still. Queen Saxy approached Evergreen's body and looking down at the red stain spreading from the arrow she said, "Evergreen is dead. It is done." Quickly she pulled down the mask of royal blue feathers so that no one would see her eyes filling with tears. She turned away giving the signal for her second to follow her to the horses and on to battle. From across the space in front of the stake Zena saw Lucystar staring at her. "She knows," Zena thought. "I don't know how, but she knows. By the gods don't give me away," Zena thought. Lucystar turned and followed the Queen. Zena breathed again and ran to Evergreen, throwing the bow to the side. Little Gabbyfan joined her with tears running down her cheeks. "Help me!", Zena commanded. They lifted Evergreen tenderly and took her to the back of the hospice where Phalon had cleared a space with the dead. "Why?", Gabbyfan was beside herself with grief. Zena said nothing but took her dagger from her boot and carefully cut open Evergreen's tunic around the arrow. When the opening was large enough Gabbyfan could see a package of what looked like maps and plans soaked in blood. "We have to stop the bleedinng when I pull the arrow," Zena said, placing Gabbyfan's fingers close to the site of the wound. She pulled the arrow out and to her relief it had only cut a small wound in Evergreen's side. Deftly Zena stitched up the hole thinking, "She's going to be mad, this is her favorite shirt." "But why is she still asleep if the wound is so small?" Gabbyfan asked with concern. "Feel the back of her head. The impact of the arrow knocked her back and she hit her head on the tree! She's alive but by the proclimation of the Queen she is dead and the debt is paid," Zena smiled. She looked up at Gabbyfan and Phalon who had come down from the hill earlier and was helping in the hospice. "Keep her still, and hidden until the battle is over. I leave you in charge of her, little warrior. I'm going to avenge the death of our mothers. Zena grabbed her weapons and stalked out, leaving a speachless Gabbyfan behind.
When she had cleared the hospice door, Zena found a soft section of grass, sat down and sobbed into her hands.

Thoughts To Ponder...
Joxcenia walked off into the woods after she and Lucystar had their talk. She had a lot to think about, and she wanted to be alone. Her mind raced back to the rescue, when her plans to free Zena had been thwarted by the slavegirl, Puella. Why do I not like her? Is it simply the fact that she messed up my plans? Is it that I got covered up in mud and then had to bathe in the icy cold creek? Is it that she seemed to move freely about the Roman camp? Her seemingly lack of fear of them? She was too confident and poised for a simple slavegirl. Her manner showed she was at ease among the Romans, like she was sure they would do her no harm. Whatever the reasons, my gut just screams "She's not to be trusted."
Maybe I had been too quick in my mistreatment of her. I should have waited for proof before I dished out my punishment, but the cruelty had been beneficial in learning that Puella only pretended not to have backbone. When push came to shove, she stood up for herself as good as any Amazon. And then, when given the opportunity, she fled. Straight for the Roman camp, where she no doubt would have told the Romans of the whereabouts of the Amazon camp had she not been stopped. And why would she pretend to cower to us, when she hadn't been so cowardly walking among the Roman troops?
Of all the things that could have befallen her, she is sent on a mission for the Amazons. FOR! And after camp was moved to keep its whereabouts safe, Puella is going to be lead here and expose us to possible future risk. Well, I can't stop this from happening. I am not the Queen. I will go along with whatever the tribe wishes. I certainly don't want to be put before the tribal counsel like Evergreen. Though a first offense can be pardoned, I'd rather it be for something more serious than distrust and disloyalty. More like a heat of the moment stupidity, like Evergreen's actions. Please... if I had a Roman father, I'd probably kill him too! They're filthy dogs... and so are their spies too!

Keeping Secrets... Joxcenia listened to the drums and singing as she stared up into the full moon. It shown down on her with a secret smile, for it had a perfect view of the land below. It not only knew where the Amazon camp was, it knew where all the Roman camps were as well. But it held its secret. And no amount of coaxing from Joxcenia could get it to divulge its information.
"Artemis," Joxcenia called out. "Hear my pleas, and protect the Amazon nation from our enemies. And help us to keep the towns and villages safe from these same enemies. Give us strength, and guidance, and help us to discern our enemies from true friends. For you are our goddess, and we are your followers, and without each other, we are nothing."
Joxcenia grew silent. She swayed to the drumbeats as she glared at the smirk the moon kept constantly on its 'face'... so much like a man. A woman would have a twinkle in her eyes that gave up her secrets. Or so she'd have you to believe. As they continued to stare each other down, she and the moon, Joxcenia's eyes grew heavy... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ leara - 05:59am May 21, 2002 ET (#162 of 330)
A bath at last TAD
“Look a pool of water.” exclaim the stinky warriors
The second turns to Xwpfan and says, “We are in need of cleansing and are stopping here to fill that need. Just because we are going to hunt the Roman’s into near extinction does not mean we have to smell like them.” Xwpfan nods in agreement and rides off.
I am going to have a strong talk with my second this is no time to be spilling all this sensitive information to a stranger. Now is not the time for that.
The pool was calm and clear like glass and large enough to bathe all of them. It was a welcome sight so much so there was a rushing frenzy to disrobe and get in the water. I am not feeling as at ease the encounter with that supposed Amazon was a little strange. The only Amazon I had ever met was an old woman who went by Madula of course it was not her name of birth. It was not even until she died that I even came to know she was an Amazon. Strange that Madula hid her identity and this XWPfan so readily divulged hers.
I hear the cries of the others “Last one in cooks supper.” I start to build a fire for it will be me who is cooking since they are already in the stream. I pull some soap from my pack and toss it in “You might actually smell better if you use some of this.” Their thanks and laughter fades as I return to my work of the fire and stew.
The flames take me back in time to my various meetings with Madula over the years. None are as deeply disturbing as our last. Madula had always been on a quest and I would pop up in the strangest of places to find her already there. I heard of an Underground Gladiator Circuit held in and around Rome where the wealthy and privileged could have front row seats with out the consequences of the public knowing about it. I heard of an old woman who fought like a young general and knew it had to be Madula. I picked up the best scout I know and posed as a wealthy bored woman to get in to the fights. Once in I was allowed access to the contestants it was Madula alright. She was not well I would propose a fight with my slave and take Madula as the prize of victory. We would talk about her quest when we were safe some where else. She agreed reluctantly. There was a snag in the plan Madula had a battle before the arranged one and was badly injured but was able to hide it until the arranged time. The three of us rode hard to the cave where I first met Madula to care for her there. Her wounds were mortal ones and there was nothing to do but make her comfortable.
After a short rest she stirred I was immediately by her side she had managed to fish out a necklace I had never seen before from under her clothing. “You must listen carefully as I will die from these wounds. I can not tell you my name it is too dangerous to pronounce out side the boundaries of my home land. I am an Amazon. I was the leader when we were attacked and plundered. We fought back but were out numbered at least thirty to one. I escaped only because I was left for dead and saved by a hunting party had been delayed by a land slide. When they arrived home they helped heal the others like me and to honor the dead with a proper ceremony. I have spent my life tracking down the last of my tribe to either send them home or assure that they will be able to cross into the land of the dead in peace. There exists is a slave Puella she is an Amazon though not of my tribe never-the-less you must swear an oath to me that you will find her and return her home. I also ask that you take my ashes with you as I do not wish to end up scattered among this filthy land of the Romans. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ leara - 06:08am May 21, 2002 ET (#163 of 330)
Continues ...... A bath at last TAD4
Madula was silent for a while and I watched as her breaths were regular and steady she was just sleeping. When she awoke a little while later, she continued like she had not stopped speaking. “You have been like a daughter I wish I would have had all these years and so I leave to you my right of caste.” The puzzled look on my face was out in the open I never expected any thing like this from her. I am terrified I do not understand this term or what I am to do with it. She is right for she has been like a mother to me through the years teaching me everything I know and showing my kindness, love and understanding. Sensing the fear in my heart she comforts me. “It is an honor for me and to you to accept this necklace it is the symbol by which you will obtain passage into the Amazon’s most sacred lands to scatter my ashes. I know you have no home and none of your people exist save you. With this you will have a place to call home, a family and even the opportunity if you wish it to start a new future. Swear me an oath to honor me and finish my quest.”
This is such a small request after all these years I cannot turn her down. I never could say no to her even the time or two I defied her wishes she never gave up on me. “I swear to do all that you have asked of me and to finish your quest.” I pause for a moment reflecting on the thing I have sworn to do. “Madula what if the Amazons do not believe that you gave me the necklace and this right of caste. Is there some way to prove who you are to them?” I ask cautiously.
“You are right my child always thinking ahead. There is a special ceremonial dagger of my people in the cave behind stones the place you first laid me down to dress my wounds. If they require further proof give my ashes to the spirit leader and she will come to know me and the truth of your words. I will continue to be with you as I always have. I’ll see you on the other side.” Madula quietly slipped away as the dawn approached.
The bucket of water poured over my head break my train of thought back to reality.“Honestly I was going to come in and clean up.” I stand up with a soaking wet grin. "Did you kill all the fish already or are there some left for dinner?"

Scroll of the Dumb Scout 2 TAD 5
I am so relieved that we have finally taken the opportunity to clean up. Maybe my nose will quit burning. Sometimes I don’t know what Leara sees in that second of hers blabbering like that to a total stranger. It might have been a Roman spy why else would it have been alone and allowed us to surround it so easily? Surely this was no seasoned Amazon warrior and if that is all they have to offer I guess we are truly on our own. Well it would just be like old times they were never all that bad because we always managed to pull through them.
Time to do what it is I do best scout. I think that Leara knows I would not be complete without these little excursions of adventure. I mean it is not for anyone that I drop everything and run. I received a message it read ‘I need a slave in Rome. Come quick slave! Leara.’
Sure I have a normal kind of life I help run an amusement center which is a front for the orphanage and runaway shelter with my partner. My partner is capable of handling everything there and at times wonder if I would be missed. I am not sure I am even needed there since some of my students have stayed on as instructors. It comes down to the fact that it is where I want to be to make a difference in every day life of some one who could use a break.
Well finally some action. It is just as suspected the Romans are taking as much land as they can defend along the river shore this must be where they are going to launch there attack from. It is impossible to get an exact number of them as they are broken down in small bands of seven to ten. We could use the silent stealth to wipe them slowly but surely from the river banks.
There is no worse test of endurance than the Roman sentinel digging his cleat in to your arm. The pain has sent a bead of sweat across my brow I wonder if he can see it as plainly as I feel it moving. This is perhaps the worst part of being a scout being so good they walk all over you and don’t even know it. Finally the scum leaves and I inspect my arm it has three holes in it this is so not good. I might have to sit in the trees and provide arrow coverage of the battle. I might have to miss the hand to hand battle with the Romans. Being near to Leara and listening to the insults and trash talk she carries on is not something you want to miss. I have to laugh sometimes it really is funny and the effect on the enemy is confusion or anger that causes them to make mistakes that a clear headed warrior would not make.
I now need a bath they will surely smell me coming back in to the camp. After the stink I made about their need to bathe I would just be asking for trouble. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Joxcenia - 05:11pm May 21, 2002 ET (#165 of 330) I Came... I Saw... I Went Home! lol
Meanwhile... Elsewhere... 2
Leicester gathered up his troops and started them back toward the camp he had left more than two moons ago. He was supposed to have been back before now, but a problem with the slave trader he did business with had delayed him. The money he made off of the people he kidnapped was more than enough to buy a mass amount of supplies for the "bandit's" war efforts. The haul was going to slow his movements down even more. Two catapults would be a great asset against the Amazons, but they were a pain to move from camp to camp.
By the gods, he would be so glad to get back to his slavegirl and her soothing hands that could work their magic on the tension in his muscles. She knew him well enough to know what he was thinking before he himself even knew what he was thinking. Maybe she would come to greet him before he reached the camp. No one else would be able to find him, because he never took the same route twice in a row. If anyone could figure out which way he would be coming from... it would be her. His loyal and trusted servant. She learned her lessons well, and caught on amazingly quick. Much better than any Roman soldier under his command. If the legions of Rome were amassed with soldiers of her talent, the Amazons would be no contest whatsoever!

Help From A Goddess
Joxcenia fought the heaviness of her eyelids; she couldn't miss the tribal council, she wanted to bring up a request to pardon Evergreen. She was certain Evergreen hadn't had a previous incident that was pardoned, or else it would be death for sure this time.... So, mustn't fall asleep... mustn't fall... mus....
"Joxcenia....." a voice softly called... "Joxcenia...."
Jox jerked open her eyes and shot a harsh look at the moon before looking around into the darkness. She saw no one.
"Ahem...." the voice cleared its throat softly. It was no more than a faint whisper on the wind. "Up here... I'm in the sky."
Jox shot another harsh look toward the moon, and could have sworn its smile broadened. "Are you talking to me?" She asked as a joke.
"Yes!" said the moon.
Jox was glad she was lying on the ground, because it saved her a painful fall. "Okay...." she said slowly, letting out all of her breath.
"I have a message..."
Jox struggled to suck in more air. "Okay..." she finally managed.
"In order to defeat the Romans, your tribe will need to raid all of their supply camps. Take what you can use, and destroy what is to be left behind."
"Okay...."
"There is Greek fire deep within the cave where you have set up a hospice. Memorize this map..." With that said, the stars formed a map. One pathway shone brighter than the others, so that Joxcenia could see the true way through the maze of trails. "There is one among you who can give you the whereabouts of all the supplies the Romans have, and will have. Seizing the supplies is the Amazon Nation's only hope. Without their weapons, the Romans will have to call a retreat."
"Okay... I understand..." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ saxgoddess25 - 06:27pm May 21, 2002 ET (#167 of 330) I have the soul of a bard and the heart of a warrior. My vengeance is swift and complete.
To let go is not weakness, but rather takes supreme courage.
Queen Saxy knelt beside the fallen amazon. The blood was spreading from the arrow in her chest, she made no move yet Saxy could hear the slight, shallow intake of breath and she knew. An intense battle raged inside her, her heart and mind warring. It was a matter of honor, and nothing, nothing was more important to her. But if Evergreen was willing to die without remark, then that spoke more for her than any words that she or Zena could have spoken. The queen nodded to herself. Evergreen had died, and that restored her lost honor. When she came back from the dead there could be no argument from the Nation that it was so.
Saxy looked up at the waiting crowd. "Evergreen is dead. It is done." Stiffly the Queen rose, pulling her headdress down over her face, ostensibly to hide her tears but really to hide the feral grin that was creeping across her face. She saw her Second share a look with Zena as she started toward the horses. She felt Lucystar behind her and slowed pace so that the other woman could catch up. They walked in silence for a moment then Lucystar spoke, "She's not dead."
"I know."
"What are you going to do?"
"I don't know yet."
They reached the picketline of horses and Saxy turned to meet her Second's eyes. Lucystar stared back. "Could you have done that? Could you have sent an arrow flying at the woman you love?" Saxy asked softly.
"To save your life I could do anything."
The Queen grew thoughtful. Your. Turning to stroke A'Mira's neck she nodded. "You're a stronger woman than I am. I'll be glad to have you watching my back." She turned back to her second with blue eyes flashing. "Carry the message for all to get ready. We're going to War."

Setting A Plan In Motion
Joxcenia awoke with a jerk. She glanced all around and then up at the moon. "Praise Artemis!" She raced off to the hospice to find a parchment and quill to draw the map. She discovered Evergreen there, injured by Zena's arrow.
"By the goddess!" she swore under her breath. Why hadn't the Queen just pardoned her??? I must remember to never do anything to cause the Queen to place such judgment on me. Or else defeat her before she has the chance. Hummm! Would have to be an unfair fight. Jox smirked to herself. I have secret skills I've shared with no one for any occasion where an Amazon went rogue and turned on me. But... she surely would never do anything to draw such punishment in the first place, so the thought of fighting the Queen wasn't at all necessary.
Jox quickly shook these disparaging thoughts from her mind and went about drawing the map before she could lose the image forever. Wait until the Queen hears of her prayers being answered by the Goddess Artemis! She'll be very pleased. No need to fear any hard feelings from her now. Jox shook her head again. Waking from a goddess-induced sleep sure is playing havoc with the thoughts that are running rampant through my mind. Fighting the Queen! Indeed! Jox started laughing. I'm really losing it. Maybe I should find the Greek fire before I tell others of my vision. If I don't find it, my 'vision' was merely a dream. And if I find it... But that could take too long. Time we can't afford to waste. Perhaps I should just tell it and then see whether the Greek fire is where my map says it is....
Joxcenia stopped laughing and grabbed her head. "Ow... My head hurts!" Decisions.... decisions..... decisions..... No wonder I'm not the Queen!

On the Matter of Trust
I did not take my eyes from Zena. In one brief moment a matter of trust was made bond. She looked at me with tears of great sorrow, looked away, sited the point, and I heard the arrow flying to its mark. I never could imagine the power of being hit from such close proximity. The past experience of being stuck by a distant arrow of an unknown assailant did not adequately prepare me for such a thunderous blow. Time slowed down and I saw green and gold lightning emanating from the deliverance of me from my crime. A thunderbolt from the hand of Zeus himself crashed into my chest. The last of my vision before the blackness were Zena’s tears falling with the very sound of the Kare Kare Falls tumbling from cliffs reflecting the last light of day.
Somewhere sounds are trying to flood into my darkness. Amazon war cries, horses excitedly calling to one another, people running, swords clanging as they are placed into sheaths, shouts of vengeance, sounds of sobbing from a soul as wounded as my body. I fight to awaken. A comforting hand touches my face and through a clouded mind I see Little Gabby. I look for Zena. Where? Where? I try to rise up and feel a gentle pressure pushing me back down. For the moment, I have no strength to resist.
“She said for me to keep you here. I think she wants to keep us BOTH here. She said you will be angry about the hole in your favorite tunic. They are all leaving. The battle is near and I so did want to be a part of it.”
A part of it…this I heard so clearly. What WAS my part in this? I set forward a chain of events that perhaps will cost so many of their lives. Was my action against Justinian worth such a great price? My sister by the blood of our father, did not find the courage to speak in my behalf. Perhaps her wounds are deeper than mine. The man that could link her to the past, and to herself, lies as cold as the rocks under which I put him. I cannot lie here and let this be. There is unfinished family business. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ EvergreenLM - 08:50pm May 21, 2002 ET (#170 of 330) "To Conquer Others is to Know Power...to Conquer Yourself is to Know the Way"

“Little Gabby, will you please go and bring me some water. I am thirsty.” With a nod, she turns and leaves the tent. “Little Dog, go find Whisperer and lead him to me.” I push up with all the strength I have left, swing to the side of the cot, attempt to stand, but my legs buckle. I fall to one knee, grabbing the cot. I hear the familiar cadence of Whisperer, and Little Dog appears from under the flap with the reins in his mouth. “I owe you an elk for dinner Little Dog.” I push up, stand, walk from the tent, and with an unseen leg up from a tall, dark, warrior woman, I mount Whisperer.
“No, get OFF of there! No! She will be SO angry at me for letting you leave!” I turned Whisperer, give Little Gabby the Amazon sign, gently kicked Whisperer, “Yah, Yah,” and I am off to find Zena, and my Sisters, and my sister of Rome. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ phalon - 11:45pm May 21, 2002 ET (#171 of 330)
Phalon returned to the hospice after getting more herbs, tonics, and medical supplies from the Agapanthus' saddlebags, to find little Gabbyfan standing outside with a stunned expression on her face. "She left, didn't she", Phalon said, making more of a statement than posing a question.
Gabbyfan nodded, "I was supposed to be watching her."
"Don't worry child, it was not your fault", then muttering aloud to herself, "Should have giving her a sleeping tonic. Why are these Amazons so damn headstrong?"
Phalon calls for Agapanthus. Her and the stallion have finally come to terms with each other, and have begun treat one another with mutual respect. Phalon mounts the horse and turns to a very forlorn looking Gabbyfan. "You ready?", Phalon asks.
Gabbyfan eagerly nods in agreement. Phalon extends her hand and pulls the girl onto Agapanthus with her, mumbling, "Zena will probably have my head for this one."

Little Gabbyfans emotions had been sent everywhere that day. She had felt worry, shock, anguish, and relief all in a few hours. Now the little Amazon felt a mix of obligation to her mothers wishes and to Evergreen, and an overwhelming desire to be in the battle. However, obligation won out, and gabbfan would do everything she could to keep a good watch over her sister Amazon.
Later, when Evergreen awoke, gabbyfan had to gently keep her lying down to explain that she was to stay here at the hospice. Evergreen said nothing about it, but asked for some water. As gabbyfan should have expected, EG was not goign to allow herself to be kept anywhere, and when the little Amazon returned her sister was already on a horse ready to depart... gabbyfan4ever - 12:28am May 22, 2002 ET (#173 of 330)
Gabbyfan yelled, "No, get OFF of there! No! She will be SO angry at me for letting you leave!" But her pleas where to to avail, and EG gave her the Amazon sign before leaving the camp.
Gabbyfan was shocked at her own failure to her responsibilities. Zena would be so disappointed with her. And just the thought of her mothers face if anything happened to Evergreen because of this made the little Amazon hurt inside.
When phalon came back, she new right away what had happened. Gabbyfan was ready to accept the coming criticism, but was surprised to hear phalon say it wasn't her fault, and ask her if she was ready to leave.
Gabbyfan was more ready than she had ever been. She was going to the war to fight the Romans who had killed her family, and she was going to fight with her sisters. As they rode to the battle the little Amazon was thinking of her failure to watch EG, and what her mothers reaction would be. Despite all those worries, she was going to see her mother, and she kept that happy thought with her as they rode ever nearer to the battle.... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ girlpower - 02:46am May 22, 2002 ET (#174 of 330) Courage is not the absence of fear..but the strength to conquer it.
Puella finds the tribe
Puella lost in her emotions, sat on the ground staring at the sword belonging to Evergreen. She killed him, she killed my father. Even the words leave a bad taste in my mouth. Ruining my chances to understand why. Why did he kill the Amazon’s and spare only me? Tears running down my face. Why was I with the Amazons in the first place? Why did he allow me to be sold as a slave? No father would do that to his child, would they?
Shaking my head and wiping the tears from my face, I composed myself. This is no way to act. If anyone saw you they’d think you were a baby lost from its mother. Even though it is exactly how I feel. No, I must continue my task. If nothing else, I must face Evergreen. My hand drifting to my neck, and get my necklace back! Pulling the sword out of the dirt I walked to Amica. Pulling myself onto her back, I whistle for her to go. Off we ride towards the sound of the beating drums.
No sooner had I began my quest towards the camp, I see Amazons riding. The first I see is Queen Saxy and her second Lucystar. The others right behind them. The war party, ready for battle…

Camp of traps TAD 3
TAD 6 Our refreshing time at the stream is cut short by the need to get back on the move. Madula would say, “Can’t hit what you can’t see.” The daylight is fading and I do not trust the one we had an encounter with earlier today. I don’t trust the Roman’s either but at least you can smell them.
The army moves with the speed and efficiency of a single warrior even covering their tracks as they go. I have to laugh when I think about the things we unloaded from the ship to the beach: weapons, water skins, bed rolls, a flute, scrolls and more weapons. We brought very little food, extra clothing or money. I think between us we only had 13 dinars. We are not cold or hungry so those were the right choices. I guess they have been around me too long I hate to carry extra things.
As dusk approaches we choose a camp site and set the traps for uninvited guests. I was born to a nation of tree dwellers and have taught my friends how to get around and stay in the trees. They will stay in the trees and I get to be the bait in the camp. I know that I am not really alone for the sweet melodic voice of Madula it is irresistible like the song of the Sirens and has grown louder in my head especially since we landed. Many questions weigh on my mind but the only one that needs an answer is the matter of Puella. If she was with the Amazons my debt and oath were fulfilled but if not then we had to find her and keep her safe. Either way the Romans had to be dealt a blow so when my Scout returns we will plan our next move.
My mind begins to wander as my body takes its rest. I am back to the day I first met Madula. I was very young and still a bit timid around people only venturing out from my cave in the twilight and dark. I was getting braver and one afternoon I happened upon an older woman who was injured. I helped her back to me humble home and tended her wounds. She spoke of the important things of life when she was awake like love, honor, friendship, loyalty and family both blood and chosen. As she recovered she expanded on specific meanings of these concepts and added new ones. Then came the warnings of the temptations: greed, power, hate, pride and revenge and their consequences: blood lust, murder, and the complete destruction of all that is good.
I am awakened be that uneasy feeling you get when you know you are being watched. My limited scan of the area yields nothing unusual but, I know it is out there. I hope the Army holds their positions as planned.

Ugh!!! They have moved camp on me again if it were anyone other than Leara there would be some heads rolling. Deep breath or maybe two. No time like the present to clean up and cool down. I can hear that second of Leara’s “Aw don’t be so sore go jump in the lake and cool off.”
Leara is hard enough to track in the daylight but it is now dark the moon is not quite full and those clouds keep passing over. I suppose there is nothing like a good challenge but by the curse of Hera this was getting a little out of hand.
It always starts out as fun and games with a quick simple single objective that always goes a foul. Like now we were to rescue Madula from the Underground Gladiator Circuit. Then we are helping her finish her quest to free some slave Puella. The next thing I know we are calling our old friends to crush the Circuit, free all the slaves, and meet out justice. The last three wealthy citizens and the slave operator escape with our main prize Puella. Where am I next? Why back on a ship. I HATE ships!!!! Which brings us to now I have three huge holes in my arm, I stink and my friends are nowhere in sight.
I start to mellow out a bit getting all this out of me. This writing thing has really helped my anger aggression responses which I never had a problem with when I still had the gift of speech.
I can hear Leara now with that silly grin on her face slyly remarking, “I’d never left ya if I didn’t think you could find me. You always find me. Cause you’re the best money can’t buy.” She would be right of course because I would go anywhere do anything and give anything for her. Besides I would bet even she did not know where she was going.
Now that it is time to get out of this pool and go get down to the business of tracking Leara. I freeze motionless against the rocks. There was a flash of movement on the shore and I cannot make out who or what it is. So here I am trapped in the water I guess I could use the extra time to soak and relax. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lucystar1 - 03:17pm May 22, 2002 ET (#177 of 330)
SECRETS ARE REVEALED
Lucystar stared at Zena in disbelief as she called for Evergreen's execution and that she would be the one to carry it out. Lucystar looked into her eyes and saw a hint of...what was that? Was there a secret hiding behind those eyes. Lucystar asked herself "Could you do what Zena is about to do to the one you love?" Saxy's face flashed before her mind's eye and before she had a chance to contemplate what she may have seen Zena raised her bow and let fly the single arrow. Lucystar's heart jumped as the arrow hit Evergreen, throwing her back with the force. She catches out of the corner of her eye, her queen flinch slightly at the sight.
Slowly they descend the platform and cross over to Zena still holding her bow. As they approach, Zena lowers her eyes, but not before Lucystar catches the glint and now knows the secret.Queen Saxy looks at Zena, steps forward and gazes intently at Evergreen's body. After a few moments she looks up and announces "She is dead." Saxy lowers the Queen's Mask and turns to leave. For a brief moment she and Lucystar look at each other and in that moment Lucystar realizes "She knows the truth."Heading toward their horses, the Queen slows her step to let her Second catch up. As Lucystar reaches her she says quietly "Shes'not dShes'nott; To which Saxy replies "I know." Now what do they do, now that time is quickly approaching for them to go to battle. As they cross to their horses, Lucystar reflects on what has just happende. &quhappened.she do what Zena had just done to the one she loves?" Without understanding how or why Lucystar knows "If it were Saxy, I could do it. I would freely give my life to save hers. I love her."Now at their horses, Saxy pauses and turns to Lucystar and asks, could she do what Zena had done for the one she loves?" Without hesitation, Lucystar looks Saxy in the eyes and says "To save YOUR life, I could do anything." Lucystar knew that what she said was the truth and as she reflected on these feelings she barely heard what Saxy was sayng to her. "This is true, I love her. I cannot let us go into battle, possibly to lose our ouwn lives, without her knowing the truth."
As Saxy began to mount her horse, Lucystar put out her hand and stops her. Saxy stops, looks at her and steps back turning to her. Their eyes lock onto each other and a battle of their own begins. Then Lucystar says "I cannot let us go into battle, possibly to die without you knowing the truth."Saxy reaches out and touches Lucystar's cheek and then places her hand on top of Lucystar's hand that is still on her arm. Looking intently at her she says "There is not much time and it's best that this wait."Lucystar is determined that what she has to say is said. "No, that is exactly why I must say what I must say. Because there isn't a lot of time and this can't wait. I love you."A very long pause passes between them and then Saxy reaches out and careess her face again as a small smcaresssses her lips. Stepping in she pulls Lucystar into an embrace and whispers very softly into her ear "I love you, too. With that, Lucystar releases the breath that she didn't realize she had been holding and leans into the embrace. In those brief moments all the chaos around them fades as they soak up the love that is flowing between them. Two lost souls that were now one.Breaking the spell they step back from each other, happy with this newly discovered knowledge. But all to soon the noise returns to their ears and they know what must be done. Knowing that they no longer will face this battle alone. They mount their horses. The Queen looks at her Second, nods, then calls out to her tribe to prepare for battle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ zena - 09:44pm May 22, 2002 ET (#178 of 330) "Agere Sequitur Esse"
The Furies
Tears are a release for the pain that builds up in the human heart. the gods give them to humankind to keep us from dying with the agony of daily earthly existence. In tears we are reborn to live and to battle another day.
Using the sleeve of her tunic, Zena wiped away the tears that had poured out of her when she left Evergreen, Gabbyfan and Phalon in the hospice. Everything had been planned so precisely, the speech, the execution, the rescue and all of it borne only by Zena. She couldn't allow herself the luxury of wavering in front of Gabbyfan; she was teaching a lesson to her daughter about courage in every circumstance, a lesson on how to focus.
Little Dog came looking for attention and he licked away the tears that had escaped Zena's sleeve. She sent him into the hospice cave. "In a day or two when Evergreen is well enough to sit up you will be good company for her. Go on, go get Evergreen" Zena said. The sound of horses made her look up and she saw the Queen and her second leaving with the rest of the Nation. As they passed each warrior looked at Zena and she wondered who understood what she had done and why, and who would forgive her for "killing" her sister and let her join the tribe in war. Did Lucystar really know what had happened? Would she tell the Queen if she knew and was Zena's own life now forfeit for the deception and betrayal of trust? From the hospice Zena heard Evergreen groan and Gabbyfan's voice soothing her. "It really doesn't matter what happens to me now", she thought. "They are both alive and will care for each other. The best way to enter battle is with nothing to lose, and that is certainly where I am. I may have lost my Amazon identity and if Evergreen does not understand that I had to do this, I have lost my friend. I have nothing." She turned to look one more time in the direction of the hospice, and lifted her hand in a farewell gesture. She jumped on Ergo who rubbed his nose against Whisperer's side. Zena pulled his head around and they trotted off. At the edge of the wood she picked up the trail and went after her sisters, to join the fight, avenge the death of sisters and mothers, and she hoped, to die a warrior's death on the battlefield.

With Single Minded Purpose
Evergreen rode Whisperer hard, dancing in and out through the trees, jumping over fallen logs, hurtling a small brook, riding with the intensity of the Furies themselves. Zena was out there. They all were. All in harms way.
Whisperer stumbles, and in a gallant effort to maintain his footing, lurches forward sending Evergreen flying through the air. With a resounding thud Evergreen's flight abruptly ends with the contact of a tree trunk and a bounce to the ground.
"By the gods! I am getting too old for this! My body is a battle ground landmark...swords,arrowpoints,tree bark burn. What next, small, biting Bacchi in my boots? And just LOOK at my tunic, bloodstains, and a hole right through the fine stitching of the pine branch. By the gods,Zena!"
And with tears beginning to flow, "Oh my friend, yes, by the gods... what an act of courage that took."
Evergreen attempted to stand, but quickly slid back down the tree. "Perhaps, I shall sit and ponder for awhile."
Whisperer walks over and nudges Evergreen's shoulder. He is lathered from the push to catch the others.
"You know ,old friend,we both need to stop before we drop in mid-gallop. I am hurting and need to rest, but only for a short while. There is much that is to happen, and I have some debts to pay and some to collect."
Evergreen sits and looks at the light filtering through the trees. The scent of the earth is strong and pleasing. She scoops up the soil mixed with pine needles in her hand and slowly watches it descend back to the ground. Such life abounding in everything.
Evergreen thinks of Zena and begins to softly sing the song they shared with their Sisters that night at Cyrene's that seems now so very long ago. Whisperer's ears twitch back,he paws and snorts at the ground. The woods become silent. Evergreen does not stop singing, but slowly draws her sai from her boot. Someone is listening and its not the trees... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Joxcenia - 02:21am May 23, 2002 ET (#180 of 330) I Came... I Saw... The Quest For Greek Fire
Joxcenia decided that she'd find the Greek fire before telling anyone of her "dream" so as not to get laughed at. She took a number of torches and lit one to guide her way. She also took a marking stone to use to mark her trail. No getting lost for me... no way. She set out on her journey, hoping she would find what she had been told in her vision. Hopefully it wouldn't take long, as time was running short. If the Romans weren't defeated soon, they might not be defeated at all.
"Sue, grab some more torches and come with me." Joxcenia called out as she caught sight of Sue bringing in more rags to boil. Sue gave her a quizzical glance as she threw the rags into the rolling water. "Don't ask, I'll explain later." Yeah, like if I find what I'm looking for. If I don't, I'll just have to make something up.

Always the warrior...
I had been searching for Puella and was on my way back to the old camp when I thought I could hear someone singing I paused, the voice sounded weak but you could clearly make out"Sisters are doing it"...
The melody brought a smile to my face as the memory of us all singing at Cyrene's filled my head. It had been such a wonderful night,in my heart I hoped we could soon return there to create new memories.
My sisters.. they should be at council, deliberating on Evergreen's fate... glancing up at the sky... maybe not it. Day was clearly broken and was getting light. The council had probably already decided on Evergreen's fate and by now will be on it's way to war.
So who then would be in the woods singing? I decided to take a closer look. I crept along the ground, quietly inching myself forward. I was not prepared for what I would find.
It was Evergreen!
The sight of Evergreen brought a lump to my throat and tears streaming down my cheek. Evergreen was laid against a tree with little dog licking her face trying to comfort her ....
Evergreen appeared to be tired and worn. She was slumped over, her favorite tunic all bloodied with a gaping a hole. Her face was dirtied and ashen, she did not look much like the Evergreen that I knew.
I couldn't help but wonder what had happened at the council. It was sickeningly obvious to me that I had not made it back to camp in time to help her. This could not be part of her punishment, something must of gone wrong.
I raised up, and started towards her when I heard the faintest of sounds, someone else was approaching... I reached for my sword.
I couldn't help but grin when I saw Evergeen reach for her sai. Always the warrior.
Evergreen was in no shape to face an unknown attacker. Earlier, I had not been able to undo the damage I had caused, but by the gods, I could help her now.
I scanned the area, the only place I could have an advantage and protect Evergreen at the same time was from behind the tree where she laid. I quickly ran through the trees and circled round.
I crouched behind the tree, I could hear every labored breath Evergreen took. With each passing moment her breathing was growing raspy and shallow at best. Evergreen needed to be in bed, not out here waiting to be attacked.
Little dog began to snarl, he sensed another's presence. Evergreen quickly quieted him. I wanted to let her know I was behind her, but I knew to to so would distract us both from whoever was approaching and distraction could mean certain death.
I stood ready. Whoever was approaching was going to have to go through me to get to Evergreen. If it meant my death so be it,nothing was going to happen to her. I was not going to let anything happen to her... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ dscout - 01:07pm May 23, 2002 ET (#182 of 330)

The cloud cover allows me to move slowly but steadily to the shore to investigate the shadowy movement. I am lying flat against the shore hoping to blend in waiting for the clouds to move revealing my company. It appears to be a wolf about four rods away and looking right through me. It gives a little whimper so, I respond with a little whistle. I can’t believe it this can’t be happening. The wolf jumps in and swims to me and starts licking my face. Man some people have all the luck I mean we are out in the middle of nowhere and who shows up to help watch our back but Leara’s wolf.
It is nice to have some help tracking her though it will be much faster and efficient this way. We arrive at what looks like the camp but there are traps set all around ah very clever nothing like live bait to set the trap. Leara is at the camp while the rest are in the trees round about. I follow Theos in to the camp carefully avoiding the traps. Leara was very surprised to see us. I tell her all about the Romans and my trip. Theos, the wolf, wakes the sleeping army with a loud cry. They carefully assemble and the Battle Plan is laid out by the Second. We are dividing in to two groups one by land the other by Sea. Why is it I always get the Sea assignment? I don’t really care I am ready to exact some revenge for my arm.
Second and group will start taking out Romans and piling up bodies both live and dead for transport to the Roman ships.
My group will secure the ships and load them with everything of value and help get the Romans on board. When the ships are loaded or the alarm rises we will set sail. The idea is that they will have to stand and fight there will be no escaping for them at least to the Sea.
Leara and Theos have quietly slipped away from camp it seems a little thing to the Army they know she is no coward and must have a special thing to get done. With a soft cry we set off before midnight to carry out our mission.

Some Answers....?
Theos,my wolf, has set a blistering pace and I am running trying to keep up in the dark over unfamiliar land. We have been running for most of the night and as dawn begins we stop for a much needed rest but it cannot last for long I have to find out what has become of Puella before I can in good conscience enter into battle. I get up secure all my weapons and we are off again. Theos stops and begins to bristle all over there is a danger ahead so we begin to creep slowly and quietly not sure who it is.
To my surprise is a beautiful woman who is badly injured and yet is reading for a battle with whatever will come along. Certainly this is an Amazon, strong, proud and fearless in the face of danger just like Madula had been. Perhaps she will have the answers I seek and need. Flanked by my wolf I pull Madula’s sword hoping that it will inspire peace faster than my own. I speak announcing my presence “I am Leara. I am here seeking answers to important questions…” I do not get the chance to get very close to the wounded warrior when that scrappy warrior we encountered at the stream met my blade.
“Ah so there is more than one of you.” I quickly add. “Xwpfan I believe you said it is right?” I continue the conversation with my self.
There is shock and disbelief not realizing that I can speak though I chose not to at our earlier encounter. Xwpfan recovers quickly with a thrust and a perry sequence.
“You have been taught well and your command of sword play is very good. Shall we make it more interesting?” I like this girl’s style and she is good but time is my enemy not this warrior. “I do not like doing this to such a fine person as you but like I was saying before being interrupted I need some answers about Puella, the Roman slave. I need to know that she has returned home to her people the Amazons and has found her half-sister. I believe Madula called her EG or something like that.” With those last words I knock her off her feet and put my blade to her throat. “Now there is no need to continue this to the death. There are many a Roman that deserve it more than you. Would you please remove all your weapons and no tricks?” I hated to defeat this little warrior before her older friend but I had no choice I hope she will someday find forgiveness for me.
I address the wounded Amazon, “I will help you to your horse if you would like or at least allow me to give you a more defensive position. I must get on my way there are many thing that need to be done. I am taking Xwpfan with me she could prove very useful to my plans. I hope at the end of this mess we can relax together as friends. It sounds like we are getting some company of our own. I am sorry to leave you here but I am out of time and options. I am truly sorry.” I put Xwpfan on to the horse and swung up in the saddle behind her. I whistle for Theos and we are off again through the forest. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ EvergreenLM - 08:05pm May 23, 2002 ET (#184 of 330) "To Conquer Others is to Know Power...to Conquer Yourself is to Know the Way"
There is No Rest for the Weary or the Wicked
As I listen for the what's behind the sounds, I become aware that there is more than one person trying to hide their footfalls. I am weak and not sure if I can fight one enemy, let alone two. My wound is bleeding again.
From somewhere Little Dog has found me and once again has sounded the alarm of a threatening presence. I pull my sai still singing as I sense someone circling to a position to my back.
In an explosion of the moment XWPfan appears with sword drawn facing a woman I have never seen before. XWPfan's skill as a warrior goes unmatched, but this day, a stranger quickly commands the situation. I feel as though I will loose consciousness and I fight to stay alert. I hear the stranger speaking to XWPfan of "Puella...that Roman slave...needing answers", and I hear my name.
XWPfan defends me and I knew she would give over her life before she would allow the stranger to come my way.To my struggling mind I see XWPfan bested by the stranger. She is overpowered, knocked off her feet, and unknown assailant has a knife at XWPfan's throat.
The stranger speaks to me,but my ears will not feed my mind the meaning. I see her drag XWPfan to Whisperer, easily tossing her up into the saddle. The stranger with the agility of a panther leaps up behind her.
"I am sorry to leave you here but I am out of time and options. I am truly sorry.”
I think the stranger speaks truth in her words, and yet...she gallops away with my defender. With determination, I rise to my knees while supporting myself with hand to the ground.
"YOU are soon going to be sorry that you left me... you should have killed me when you had the chance!" And with all the breath I could call upon, I place my fingers to my lips and whistle. I whistle loud and long. In the distance I hear Whisperer cry out followed by the sounds of riders shouting before they fly to the ground. Its the last thing I hear before my mind fades to nothingness.

In need for assistance
I awoke to find myself slung over the back of a horse, dazed and angry I tried desperately to maneuver for a chance to see who I was riding with.
It was Leara! I knew I had been right not to trust her. I looked around carefully, I could see that she had quite army. What was the stupid name of it? Oh yeah the army of the dispossed, I could see everything but Evergreen. Where was Evergreen?
Ever instinct in my body wanted to knock Leara off her horse and pummel her, but until I knew where Evergreen was and what use I was to this so called Army I was going to have to wait...
However, not wanting to leave anything to chance, I first tore a small piece from my tunic and dropped it out of the pathway of the army, then I grabbed a few leaves off a lowered branch as we passed by. Every few feet I would tear the smallest of pieces off and drop it to the ground below whenever I saw that no one was looking. I silently prayed to Artmeis for someone to find my trail.
I was going to need help getting out of this predicament and Evergreen would also need assistance wherever she was.
As I dropped the last leaf I felt my head grow light and darkness overtook me. was passing out from all the blood going to my brain, with my last moment of consciousness I swore I could hear GP's horse neighing but I was not sure if it was real or an hallucination. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ girlpower - 09:43pm May 23, 2002 ET (#186 of 330) Courage is not the absence of fear..but the strength to conquer it.
Puella tends to Evergreen
At first sight of the Amazons, Puella jumped off of Amica and hid. I watched the Amazon war party heading to attack the Roman camp. Not seeing Evergreen amongst them I decide to keep my presence hidden. After they were all out of sight I mounted Amica and began to ride in the direction in which the Amazon’s had come. Evergreen was sure to be back at the camp, if she is not with the war party.
I hadn’t ridden for very long when I noticed little dog just off in the distance. I dismounted Amica whispering for her to stay close, and crept towards dog. He saw me and gave out a whimper. Not moving from his position. “What are you doing out here little dog?” I asked as I scratched his ears. He looked up at me. “You should be with Evergreen or little Gabbyfan.” Realizing my own words, I began to scan the area. I listened carefully. I heard the sound of labored breathing. Following the sound I see Evergreen unconscious and bleeding, against the base of a tree. I moved towards her, pulling out her sword from my sheath. Seeing her in such an injured state I couldn’t strike her. The fight would not be fair. When I have my revenge on her she will be able to answer my questions and defend herself. I will see to that. Kneeling down I felt Evergreen’s face, she was warm to the touch. Whistling for Amica, I explored the wound on her chest. An arrow wound, very close to her heart. The wound has been cleaned and dressed, by the Amazon’s. Reaching up to Amica, I pulled out my healing pouch. “What are you doing out here?” I asked without expecting an answer. Stubborn woman, not wanting to leave your friends to battle alone, even with such wounds. I must respect you for that. I tended the wound applying pressure to the bleeding. Once the bleeding had stopped I checked the rest of her for injuries. I see older wounds and a knot on the back of her head. Though she was pale due to the blood loss, I can see no other injuries that are life threatening. She just needs to rest. Leaving her there against the tree, I walk over to Amica and clean my hands of the blood that came from Evergreen’s wound. Looking over at little dog I nodded. “She’ll be fine, now go and keep an eye on her.” He was at her side in an instant. “Where is her horse, Whisperer?”
My senses heightened as I see there is no horse, but mine. Wait, there is one, but whose horse is it? I saw Xwpfan riding this one. Scanning the ground I see footprints, in what looks to be a struggle. I know it wasn’t Evergreen, so it must be Xwpfan that was protecting her. There were horse tracks as well, just off from the site you can see where it reared. A piece of a tunic lay on the ground. It was from Xwpfan, I’d recognize that anywhere. Up ahead there are leaves in the form of a trail. She has been captured. Who ever it is also took Evergreen’s horse. I don’t know whom it is that I am up against, but I have to get Xwpfan back. After all, she has my necklace. Checking on Evergreen one last time and petting little dog I spoke, “I’m off to get your friend EG, little dog keep her safe.” Running up to Amica I jumped on and began following the trail Xwpfan left behind…

The Quest For Greek Fire Continues...
Joxcenia and Sue worked their way through the maze of cave tunnels, neither spoke. Sue must be afraid to say something that'll set me off, Joxcenia thought with amusement. Well, just gives me time to think.
After about ten minutes they finally came to a "room" that opened up before them. As the light from the torch's flames hit the crystal walls, the room shone as bright as though they were outside in the afternoon sun on a cloudless day.
"Oh my, it's beautiful!" Sue exclaimed before she could stop herself.
"Yes, it is." Joxcenia agreed. She gave Sue a reassuring smile. I'm not the ogre you think I am, it said. "You can look around, but be very careful of your footsteps. And don't leave this room."
Sue opened her mouth to protest, but shut it quickly.
"Okay, so you're smarter than I've just given you credit for," Jox said with amused laughter. "It's better to treat someone as stupid and then find out they're smart, than to treat someone as smart and then find out they're stupid. You've been a great help in the hospice, so I'd hate to lose you now."
Sue smiled brightly. Her body relaxed as she wandered over to the large hot spring in the center of a rock formation. It was large enough for several to soak at the same time.
Humm... Joxcenia's nostrils flared. That would have come in handy when I had all that mud to wash off!
bloop... bloop... bloop... spirshhh... bloop... bloop... bloop... spirshhh
Joxcenia followed the sounds over to a far corner of the room. She spotted the black goo bubbling up from the ground as though it were in a pot hanging over a fire. Nice! Very Nice!
"Okay, Sue... help me place several of the torches around and light them." called out Jox. "Let's not set any too near the black pit, we don't want to set it ablaze."
Sue nodded. "How about we put up a torch at each tunnel entrance so the trail won't be hard to find?"
"Excellent idea." Jox agreed. "If we run out of torches before we run out of entrances, we'll gather up more back at the hospice to finish the job."

Once back at the hospice, Joxcenia prepared for a journey, and raced off in search of the Queen. The tribe must learn of her vision, and the discovery she had made. Only one thing gnawed at her... who is the one among us who knows the location of the Roman weapons? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ xwpfan - 11:52pm May 23, 2002 ET (#188 of 330)
In focus
My eyes were still burry and unable to focus when I regained consciousness. I tried to to squint to bring into focus, all I could make out were fur and eyeballs staring intently back at me. As I got my vision back my eyes widened with fear. I was sitting face to face with a snarling wolf!
I heard Leara call the wolf off, I sighed a sigh of relief. After the day I was having I half expected to be eaten or torn to shreds by the wolf.
I looked around, there was activity everwhere.Leara's army seemed to be splitting up. At least half of her army was heading towards the water with supplies and bedrolls, another part of the army was heading up a scouting party, while a few formed a hunting party for food.
Except for a few dumb scouts hanging out in the tree tops, the wolf and Leara the camp was essentially empty.
One of the dumb scouts brought me a plate of food and a mug of water. I gladly gulped the water as I was immensely dry and thirsty. As for the food I could not bring my self to eat, but rather held back a few scraps that I thought the wolf might enjoy..
I saw Gp from a distance frantically gesturing to me. I looked around, then I shook my head in disbelief, and laughed. Only I could have my nemesis: my arch enemy as my rescuer!
The TAD"s wanted to find her and here she was, the hunted was about to become the hunter. I knew I had to get rid of someone or something as soon as possible, as distraction so that Puella could come rescue me.
I pretended to sleep after drinking my water, I wanted to appear as no threat to Leara or her followers.
I waited until they were all bent over staring a map, to call the wolf over to me. At first the wolf snarled and growled but as I tossed each scrap he ventured a little closer.. Once I had him in my grasp I twisted his head, breaking his neck . I hated to do it to such a noble creature, but I knew if Gp and I escaped with our lives, he would just track us down.
As I killed the wolf I saw Gp enter the camp, a scout lept from the trees and landed right on top of GP but he was no match for the agile Gp, she soon disposed of him and moved towards me.
She was about to pull me up when two scouts came up behind her, with a quick elbow to the neck she felled the scout to the right.
I was highly frustrated at not being able to stand on my own, and my inabilty to assist with the scout on the right just deepened it.
However with a little Amazon ingenuinity I found was able to kick violently in the chinbone area. After many vicious kicks I finally knocked him off of his feet and I kicked the his very legs out from underneath him.
As he fell to the ground with a thud,I saw Gp coming towards me.
Gp eyes were sparkling with mischief and with fire from battle. As she lifted me to my feet she grinned and gloated. "I guess even Amazons need rescuing". " You going to owe me BIG after this!"
I laughed and nodded my head and said " GP Can't this wait... we still have to deal with Leara and then join the others! I grinned and said " By the way I believe I already owe you...

The Quest For The Queen
Joxcenia rode Harmony for a distance; then every so often she stopped her horse under a tree to catch a lower limb to move through the trees to scout around in all directions. When satisfied as to which route to take, she dropped back down onto her waiting ride and moved on. She avoided any open spaces, instead keeping to the safety of the trees and foliage.
She kept going over and over the message from her vision. Who is the one among us who knows where to find the Roman weapons? Joxcenia bolted straight up in the saddle and froze. Egads, the horror! Her mind screamed. It can't be... can it? But then who else can it be? Puella! No... no... no... Not Puella! Puella?
Joxcenia stopped again to climb through the trees, searching for any sign of the Romans or of the tribe. None. Puella is a Roman slave. She came here with the Romans. She moved somewhat freely among them. But Romans aren't known for planning strategy in front of any potential enemy. If Puella knows where the weapons are, wouldn't that make her one of them? They would either consider her one of them, or see her as not being a threat. Hummm. Not being a threat doesn't necessarily make one an ally, just seem to be so.
Harmony came to a standstill, her ears twitching back and forth. She must hear something I can't. Joxcenia reasoned. I better get to the trees. Joxcenia used hand signals to communicate her orders to Harmony, who trotted over behind some bushes to hide. I'm glad I taught her hand signals and animal calls as a way of giving her her orders. Jox smirked at the thought. This way I won't give my position away when I need her to do something, either as a distraction, or as a means of escape.
Did you hear something, girl? Jox wondered. Or did it go off in another direction, away from us? She decided she would wait and scout for a few minutes more then continue on her way. She needed to get her information to the Queen right away.
