Illusia
Ergo trotted easily over the Amazon trail at first, for the track was wide and flat. The way became more difficult when the trail narrowed and a light drizzle began to fall. "Someday, people may actually put paths right where they need them," Zena thought. "I've heard that the Romans do that in their own homeland. Romans." Zena leaned forward a bit and felt her saddlebag where she had placed the package of plans and maps she had taken from under Evergreen's tunic. They were bloodied but readable and gave the standard layout for each camp. They could also be Zena's death warrant. If the battle didn't mesh as planned Zena knew she would have to offer the package to the Queen, but it bore the unmistakable cut of an arrow, and if Lucystar had figured out the earlier deception........"Well, Zena thought, "it is what it is."
The rain increased and made the ride unpleasant. It was comforting to think that Evergreen was warm and safe back in the hospice. By now Phalon had given her a sleeping potion and she was well on her way to full healing. Phalon was a good woman, gentle and filled with the knowledge of plants and healing herbs. She would help Evergreen teach Little Gabbyfan all she needed to know to face the changing world. "Focus," Zena reminded herself. "Focus as Xena and Gabrielle taught us. There is nothing in the world for you but this battle."
Zena urged Ergo to go faster and sighted the band up ahead. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ girlpower - 04:51pm May 24, 2002 ET (#191 of 330) Courage is not the absence of fear..but the strength to conquer it.
Puella to the rescue
Puella’s eyes were sparkling with mischief and with fire from battle. As I lifted Xwpfan to her feet, I grinned and gloated. "I guess even Amazons need rescuing. You going to owe me BIG after this!" Xwpfan laughed and nodded her head saying," GP Can't this wait... we still have to deal with Leara and then join the others! She grinned and said, " By the way I believe I already owe you.”
Xwpfan and Puella made our way through the camp. Ruffians from the kidnapper's army continued to come at us. The two of us worked together as one. Each opponent we took out with ease. No wonder we were such great adversaries. Looking at Xwpfan, “My horse is not far. Where is Evergreen’s horse, Whisperer?” I asked while I watched Xwpfan trip and knockout another man as he came at her. “Over there,” she gestured towards the other horses. “You release Whisperer, while I take care of some unfinished business. No one takes me anywhere against my will.” Xwpfan growled through her teeth as she spoke. I ran towards the horses and untied the reins. I whistled and Whisperer’s ears perked up. “Let’s get you back to your friend.” I said aloud to the horse. As I grabbed the reins and began to lead her out towards Amica, I turned and caught sight of a woman.
She was leaning over the dead wolf, tears of sorrow and fury streaming down her face. In a blind rage she headed straight towards Xwpfan. Pulling her sword from her sheath she screamed, “You killed Theos! I don’t care if you are Amazon, I’m going to kill you!” I jumped onto Whisperer and rode full force to Xwpfan. “Here take this,” I yelled as I threw Evergreen’s sword to her. She caught it and the sounds of swords clashing could be heard throughout the camp…

Divine Retribution
Puella had come to my rescue! I wasn't sure why she chose to rescue me, but I was glad she did.
As we fought off the remnants of Leara's army I couldn't help but watch her out the corner of my eye. I noticed that her fighting skills were nearly equal to mine.
As we fought our way towards the horses I found myself thinking how grateful I was to be fighting with her, rather than against her for a change.
When we got near the horses Puella asked me "Where's Evergreen's horse Whisperer? I pointed and said" Over there. You release Whisperer while I take care of some Unfinished business. Nobody takes me anywhere against my will!"
Puella whistled and Whisperer came to her. As Puella grabbed the reigns I spotted Leara crying over her dead wolf Theos. She spotted me and arose with a blind with fury, she was now a mad woman filled rage and she was coming straight at me with her sword unsheathed.
I took a deep breath and braced myself. Foolishly, I had felt no need to pick up a sword after our incursion with the other TAD members.I blindly searched around in hopes of seeing a weapon. Surely, I had knocked a few swords to the ground during our little battle.
Thankfully, Puella took note of my lack of weapons and threw me Evergreen's sword. The sword fell right into my hands like an old friend. The hilt of the sword fit my hand like it had been made just for me. I swung it in a downward circular motion, it was perfectly balanced. No wonder Evergreen loved her sword so much.
Just as I got the feel of the sword, Leara came running at me like a mad woman. Once she reached me, she changed her cadence and began to move with a wolf like quality, circling around me,hunting me,inching ever so near with each turn. The look in her eyes was venomous, it was blind hate fueling her every thought, her every movement.
Initally Leara was overpowering, I could only fight her defensively. I was however able to meet her blade blow for blow. Clang clang, the clashing of swords rang on and on throughout the woods.
I grew more confident as I successfully challenged each onslaught of wild thrusts and perrys. Each missed blow just incensed Leara more until finally anger overtook her,and she just began to flail her sword about, and began fighting irradically.
I smiled knowing I now had her off her game.
As I watched her evey move,I now had the advantage. I had the cooler head.
Leara was bent on venegance - blinding rage- whereas mine was a cool thought out plotting revenge .
Leara let out a blood curtling scream as she came at me trying to kill me in one blow, she tried to thrust her sword into my stomach, but I side stepped and thrust my elbow into her chin knocking her backwards, as she fell I spun around and was able to put my foot at the base of her throat and the tip of my sword at rested at her nose.
Never diverting my eyes from her I said,"This can end one of two ways. I can kill you... or you can come with me. Either way your not going to be happy and that is going to be fine by me".
Leara spat in my face.
I wanted desperately to exact my revenge at that moment, but instead I struck her hard across the face- her head snapped side to side with the blow. I growled," You will never disrespect me like that again!!"
Leara sat up and was glaring at me defiantly so Istruck her so hard that I knocked her unconcious.
I dragged her unconcious limp body towards the remaining horses. Once there I took off her boots, tied her up, blindfolded her and gagged her.
I remembered the maps, thinking they might be useful in our war against the Romans I ran over and gathered the maps and tucked them in my tattered tunic.

Divine Retribution continued
I walked over to the saddled horses and found the strongest proudest looking steed, I patted it's nose and said "You must be Leara's horse, well you're mine now.. I think I'll name you Divine Retribution". I then dumped the supplies from all of the other remaining horse's saddlebags and then released all the horses.
I grabbed Leara by the arm and slung her over her former horse and in her ear I said, "I am not done with you by any means! First,I have to find Evergreen. I swear by the God's if anything has happened to Evergreen you will wish that you had never been born."
I mounted Divine Retribution and rode to catch up with Puella.
Puella laughed as she saw me riding up on Leara's horse with Leara bobing up and down hanging over the side. She said,"Now what are you going to do with her?"
I smiled and said," After we find Evergreen I am going to do to her a few of the things that I had once planned to do to you"
Puella laughed and said" I actually pity her then."
" You should...I do too, well almost." I said laughingly."Come on let's find Evergreen so we can have some fun with this Kidnapper."
Puella said with all seriousness, " After we find Evergreen and before you torment this Leara person I have to talk to you."
I looked at her and said" How bout this, we find Evergreen, then We'll torment Leara together and then you and I will have a serious conversation, because I need to talk to you too."
Puella nodded in agreement.
With joyful anticipation we rode off looking for Evergreen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ phalon - 11:52pm May 24, 2002 ET (#194 of 330)
Telltale Signs
Phalon pushed Agapanthus hard to catch up with the others. She could see that the big black stallion was growing weary from carrying the weight of an extra rider. She slowed the horse to a trot, and then a walk. Thank the gods she did, or she would have missed the form slumped against a large tree.
Apparently, Little Gabbyfan saw it also. She was off Agapanthus even before Phalon brought the horse to a halt, running towards the slumped figure, yelling, "Evergreen! Evergreen!" She dropped to her knees in front of Evergreen, tears streaming down her cheeks. Little Dog left Evergreen's side, from where he was keeping vigil, and licked her face, seeming to wipe the tears away.
Little Gabbyfan turned to Phalon and asked, "Is she....?", she could not bring herself to say the words.
"No, little one. She is not dead. She has lost a great deal of blood and has most likely passed out from the pain." Phalon knelt down and checked the dressings on Evergreen's wound. "These have been recently changed", she stated, undoing the dressings to check the wound itself.
She pulled a small package from her pouch wrapped in cheesecloth. Inside was a poulstice made from ground herbs and mud which she applied to the wound. Then she took clean strips of linen and began to wrap the wound - under her arm, then over the opposite shoulder.
Phalon stopped short, staring at the body of the woman whose wounds she was attending - and she knew. The scars on her shoulder and back. A girl cut down in brutality by her own father. A half-sister sold into slavery by the same man. Phalon knew who Evergreen was. Evergreen was Puella's half-sister. Now, she wondered, did Evergreen know? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ EvergreenLM - 03:01am May 25, 2002 ET (#195 of 330) "To Conquer Others is to Know Power...to Conquer Yourself is to Know the Way"
Soaring and Seeing
Somewhere between the past and present, between the here and now, Evergreen drifts in and out of other worlds and other times. She senses a kind and caring hand touching her face, a strong and courageous presence is also near. Caring hands cool a burning wound. And, with all of her being, Evergreen knows that the Sisters will soon again ride as one. She feels this deep in a communal heart that unites the Amazon Nation.
In her feverish mind, Evergreen has taken flight and now soars as a Falcon. She sees Zena riding alone and searching for the others, searching for herself. The Falcon swoops down to witness a great battle between the stranger and XWPfan. What had transpired just a short time ago is quickly set right by the joining of two sworn enemies who have now found an alliance. A dark adversary is contained, thrown over a horse, and soon will meet her fate as did the wolf.
The Falcon flies to the north and sees two others who search for the Queen to tell her of the find of Greek Fire. Their mission is one of urgency. The Falcon cries and flies in the direction they should follow. Joxcenia sees the Falcon, is a believer in signs, and knows she is on the right path.
The Falcon sees another woman in the forest and extends its great sharp talons while flying with the speed fueled by the gods. It is with focused attention that the Falcon intends to snare its prey. And yet, there is familiarity in that which is to be attacked. The Falcon retracts its claws, soars above the woman, dives in, and flies out. “Puella?”

Soaring and Seeing continued
“Phalon, come here, she is trying to say something."
Phalon moves over to Evergreen, kneels down with her ear placed near her face, and listens.
”Puella…my sister…don’t run away from me.” Evergreen reaches for Phalon’s face, Phalon takes her hand.
“I am not Puella, Evergreen, but I am your friend. We will find her, together, I promise, we WILL find her.”
“Little Gabby, stay with her while I search for the others. If you have to, use the sai in her boot to protect yourself. Little Dog will warn you if anyone approaches. Don’t leave this spot. She got away from you once already, but I don’t think she is going anywhere this time…”
“No Phalon, NOT this time even if I have to tie her boots together.”
Phalon smiles thinking, “THIS one is destined to be a warrior!”

Divine Retribution was a wonderful horse, he practically found his way to the tree himself as my head was swirling with troubling thoughts and and vengeful ideas.
Truthfully the thought that was bothering me the most was that Puella had thrown me EVERGREEN'S sword. At the moment when she threw it I was just so grateful to have a familar weapon in my hands. Now I was consumed with HOW she was able to get Evergreen's sword from her.
My thoughts were disrupted by Puella saying "If your wondering about the sword.. I didn't kill her and I didn't steal it off her..by the way I see the body squirming I think your prisoner is waking up!"
I gave Leara a quick jab to the side to stop her from squirming. I didn't need any distractions at hte moment.
As for Puella something inside of me trusted her. Relieved at her words, I let out an evil little laugh, thinking of what was in store for Leara.
Puella smiled and said, "I know that laugh, I know she's in serious trouble!"
The laughing stopped as we approached the tree where Puella had said she had left Evergreen.
There was litttle Gabby staring at us with a sai drawn to protect Evergreen. She looked relieved and scared at the same time.Evergreen called out for Puella.
Puella looked at me and I said "Go to her, she may have the answers you seek."

Little Gabbyfan and Phalon had been riding as quick as cheetahs to catch up to the other Amazons and the battle. But gabbyfan could feel the horse tiring under her, and knew they would have to stop soon.
Not long after, phalon and GF both saw a figure slumped against the tree, that ended up being Evergreen. Gabbyfan jumped off the horse and was at her sisters side in a second. The immediate thought that entered the little Amazon's mind was that EG had died, and it was her fault for letting her leave the hospice. With tears streaming down her face, Phalon assured her that EG was not dead, and gabbyfan breathed a sigh of relief.
Gabbyfan was left to stand guard over EG while Phalon left in search of the others. Stroking Little Dog to comfort herself more than the dog, gabbyfan listened to her sister continue to ask for Puella in her feverish state. Just then little dog stood up and let out a low growl. For an instant only the little warrior was frozen, but quickly recovered and grabbed Evergreen's sai from her boot. little gabby would not let anything else happen to her sister as a result of her shortcomings. There the little warrior waited for an attack... ont. next post ------------------------------------------------------------------------ gabbyfan4ever - 01:38pm May 25, 2002 ET (#199 of 330)
A few moments later xwpfan and puella came riding up, with a body slung over xwpfan's horse. gabbyfan relaxed at the sight of the familiar faces but kept up her guard, there wouldn't be anymore mistakes on her part. EG once again called out of Puella, and the roman slave came to her. LGF kept a tight grip on Evergreen's sai, and sent little dog over to EG's side.
LGF noticed that they had Evergreen's sword, and wondered how it came into their possession, along with who the person on xwpfan's horse was. As little gabby continued to keep an eye on her sister while Puella talked with her, she wished that Phalon would come back, and that she understood exactly what was going on here. Most of all, she wondered how her mother was doing, and if she was safe. She wanted more than anything to be with her right now, and be assured everything would be ok.

Joxcenia sat in the treetop, waiting to see if anyone was going to approach. All was quiet except the rustling of the leaves as the wind blew through them. Several dark clouds overhead were obviously releasing their fill of water, but fortunately Joxcenia wasn't under either one of them. Her spot in the trees was nice and dry.
A movement in the sky caught her eye, as a falcon swoop down and circled the tree several times before heading off in the same direction. Jox knew this was a sign that she was to follow. Leara had caught up to us with Theos and the scrappy Amazon warrior from the day earlier. She is firm in her speech that this Xwpfan was a friend and treated appropriately. Leara began “Puella is my sworn oath and responsibility. You, my friends, I ask that your oath be to me. I ask that you defeat the Romans and carry out our plans. You will be careful not to harm any of the Amazon warriors. No matter what you will send as many Romans as possible to Tartarus. I will rejoin you later if not here perhaps the Elysian Fields.” With a sly grin she adds, “Or in the case of some of us perhaps Tartarus as well. Swear it with you life as a seal.”
“We swear. Death to the Romans! May death find me before dishonor!” TAD answered.
As we were finishing to get ready to go the scrappy Amazon warrior snapped Theos’ neck. Coming to her defense was Puella, I recognized her from Justinians place. I have never seen such rage in Leara, we rushed to help but were too late they took Leara with them.
I wanted to pursue them but we have just sworn an oath to take care of the Romans. I motion the 2nd that the other warrior was Puella. We took off in our respective directions. It was up to us to do our job as Leara now had her mission well in hand with both Puella and the Amazons. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ xwpfan - 08:39pm May 25, 2002 ET (#202 of 330)
Nice day for fishing
I walked over to Little Gabby put my arms around her and said, "You've done a great job guarding Evergreen. You've done a better job than I did. Zena is going to be so proud of you!"
Gabby blushed at the compliment and then she burst into tears as she told me of the days earlier events. It was too much strain and stress on such a young heart. In less than 24 hours there had been a council meeting, Evergreen had been shot with an arrow by Zena, Evergreen was not dead but barely alive, Gabby trying to take care of Evergreen and she rode off, then refinding her and left once more to protect Evergreen while Zena and the other Amazons went off to war with the Romans.
I dried her eyes and said," Have you eaten at all today?" Little Gabby just shrugged her shoulders. I said," Why don't you make a little fire while me and my friend there go fishing. I want you keep an eye on Evergreen and Puella for me. Little Gabby smiled and nodded in agreement.
I dragged Leara off of the horse and dragged her fidgety body down to the river bank. At first thought I was just going to throw her in, but then I'd have to get wet geting her out. So I looked around and found a patch of Poison Sumac... loosened her bindings just enough that she could wiggle around and then I tossed her right in the middle of the patch. I watched her wiggle and squirm through the patch , she managed to squirm her way to the water's edge, but I wouldn't let her go into the water, instead I pushed her with my fishing stick back towards a mudded embankement.
Now mudded and full of Poison Sumac,Leara was getting irritable so I gave her a mighty klunk on the head and she was out cold.
A goood meal was needed by all so I continued to fish, I caught a few trout and even a few eels. I thought about bring them back to camp to clean them, but I thought maybe the smell of fresh fish kill may not be the best thing for Evergreen at the moment.
I looked around and found a flat rock, I took my breast dagger and began to filet the fish, I was about to toss the fish guts away when I saw Leara coming to, trying to untie herself.
By the Gods I swear I tried to resist the impulse but I could not. I gathered up the fish guts and heads and poured them over Leara's head and and walked away leaving the fishkill to rot in the sun on top of her.
I took the cleaned fish back to camp. Gabby looked relieved to see me, for Evergreen and Puella were still together talking. I smiled as I saw Gabby had made the the most perfect little fire, she was coming along nicely.
I offered her my catch and she said,"May I cook them, I laughed and said "Sure!"
Gabby looked at me and said "Where is that woman you had earlier? Should I cook for her too?" I pointed to the water and then nodded yes.
I stoked the fire and watched the emebers burn, it gave me an idea for a fitting revenge for Leara...but I decided I'd wait for Puella to join me.
Instead I got Divine Retribution and my whip, and walked back to Leara . I lassoed her with my whip and dragged her back to camp. I couldn't wait for Puella to help me with this one final thing before I would release Leara...

Tables have turned
I met up with the Army where they were to part their company and go their own ways and I had Xwpfan with me. I had hoped to be joining them but I still had no answer about Puella. I gave my fight speech and extracted an oath from them.
I wanted to talk more to Xwpfan before moving on to the next objective. I watch in horror as Xwpfan snaps the neck of Theos. Talk time is now over. I have lost two families in such a short lifetime. Now in only a matter of weeks I have lost my ‘mother’ and my wolf to senseless acts of violence.
I pull Madula’s sword then through my tears of pain and rage I begin to attack Xwpfan. In my heart, I want her death to be painful and slow but, my head only wants to punish her severely. I am frustrated as the sword begins to betray me by my shear power of will I try to force it into punishing this Amazon but, it is stronger than I. The roles are reversed this time. I saw Puella. Then my army setting off for their mission then all is black.
I am comforted by Madula’s sweet melodic tones as she comes to me trying to offer help. I am glad that she is here otherwise I might not have the strength to go through this. I keep wondering what more could come my way.
A constant poke every time I get a little more comfortable. Then the Poison weeds trick was good but, lucky for me I am quite immune to this sort of plant I wiggle and squirm no time to let on any different. I have been craving going fishing and this is a real torture this fish guts thing. What will be next??? In the end, I will be the one with the last laugh.
Madula has taken the rage from my person but, there is a large hole in my life that I think will never be filled again. There is no reason to linger here after my debt is paid. I should think I will be happy just to leave this place with my life. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ zena - 09:53pm May 25, 2002 ET (#204 of 330) "Agere Sequitur Esse"
Endgame
Ergo drew close to the group of Amazons awaiting their orders from the Queen or her second. In the saddle, Zena shifted uneasily as the other warriors looked her over. No one had spoken yet of the council or the execution and Zena wished that she could spend her the anxious energy building inside of her on a few Roman skulls. All there was to do now was wait.

Scroll of the Dumb Scout 6 The First Blow
With Leara away with the Amazon and the slave Puella we were a little uneasy but to fail at an oath was a more terrifying thought. We moved away quickly no time to wait of the next wave of Amazons.
We ran flat out down to the beach and began the trek along the shore. As we came across some of our own horses and some of the Romans horses so we collected them. Our objective will be to take the Roman ships quietly so, we will divide into two smaller groups. Kierna and I will lead the horses up to the Romans and ask for a reward. The other swimmers will come up from the sea and begin the preparations to set sail.
The Romans are around the next cove and we will rest here until twilight when we will enact our plan. We watch the sunset and wish each other well. I hope that our 2nd and group are as successful as we have been.
The Romans are eager to regain their steeds it is hard to control the smile that begs to cross our face. These men will not be in possession of then for long. We make quick work of these soft Romans. They are swiftly subdued with all stealth using a mean right hook, or a staff to the head or other method to do the job well.
They are quickly moved into the boats and secured. All the supplies nearby are loaded into the ships we begin to move out further and further from the boats. The horses are handy in transporting the Romans and the supplies to the ships.
The efficiency with which the two small bands worked together was amazing. The timing was not quite flawless but was close enough that the Romans were not alarmed. The Romans are now trapped on the land there is no way to retreat to the sea their ships are gone. With the desertion notices left in the camps, the ships loaded and under sail the TAD returned their thoughts to their fearless leader. They prayed for Leara's safety and success.

Puella finds an answer
Puella rides her horse Amica, with Whisperer in tow. Xwpfan and I are on our way from the kidnapper’s camp to find Evergreen. On the way something caught my eye, I look up and see a falcon. Such a majestic bird. My attention is brought back by the awkward silence of Xwpfan. "If you’re wondering about the sword. I didn't kill her and I didn't steal it off her. By the way, I see the body squirming. I think your prisoner is waking up!" I said to break the silence. We both laugh at the sight of Leara hanging over the side of Xwpfan’s new horse.
Riding I notice our surroundings are more familiar. We are near the spot in which I left Evergreen. A smile crosses my face as I see that little Gabbyfan has found her way to Evergreen’s side. As we approach I see her in a defensive position with sai in hand, ready to defend the warrior with her life. In seeing Xwpfan, she relaxes her position and a small smile of relief can be seen, but she tenses right back up when she catches sight of me. Xwpfan reassures Gabbyfan of her and Evergreen’s safety. Suddenly Evergreen calls out, “Puella, my sister don’t run away from me.” With a look of confusion, I turn to Xwpfan, she nodded and said, “go to her, she may have the answers you seek.”
Why did she call me sister? She must be delusional from her injuries. I jump from Amica and walk over to examine Evergreen. To my surprise she is not warm to the touch. It seems that little Gabbyfan has taken very good care of her. Did I expect anything less, of course not, she has always given her all, no matter the situation. I look over to her in admiration. As I knelt by Evergreen she began to speak again. Repeating the same word from before. “Puella…my sister…don’t run away from me.”
“Why do you call me your sister? I have no sister.” I whispered to Evergreen. My mind raced, putting together the pieces of my memory. The day at the Roman camp, the word of the soldier, “One of those warriors is the Senator’s daughter.” Then the vision of Justinian’s face as I yelled the word “father.” Could she truly be my sister? I spoke aloud, “How can you be my sister, no daughter would kill her own father.” Though I know that if I had the chance to even the score with a few of those in my past, I wouldn’t hesitate to thrust my dagger into their very hearts. With this realization, I slumped down to the ground by Evergreen’s feet and began to cry. Sobbing I say, “Evergreen, I have searched all my life, for a person to rely on, a person who will love me. Are you that person, my sister?”…

TAD 7
Throbbing pain from my head and face awakens me. I am sitting against a rock wall across from me lies the wounded warrior I left when I took Xwpfan. She is resting and by her bedside was a young warrior with a staff, I begin to scratch the itch on my back.
The young warrior’s staff is in my face as she asks, “Where do you think you are going? You low down no good offspring of a viper.” She scowls Xwpfan “It’s awake.”
Xwpfan and Puella return weapons drawn on me. I can’t help but, laugh three Amazon warriors with weapons held on me. I am beaten-up, bound hands and feet, gagged and bootless. What exactly are they expecting me to try and pull off. I am sure there is a scheme to get me out but why would I want to leave?? I have both the Amazons and Puella. I can not control my laughter. I’m trying not to fall over.
“You think this is funny…” Smack I am out cold again.
A little while later I awaken again they are all still here. Not it was not just a bad dream and no I won't be waking up soon.
“What we have done is only a fraction of what the others will inflict upon you. You are about the feel what wrath really is. I want you to make a move just give me an excuse anything will do.” Taunts little Gabbyfan. With a sneeze from Leara she follows through with a thrust of her staff like I am some stuffed dummy.
I have to get out of here as it is obvious that my mission as far as Puella is complete. She has found her sister and her people. My place is with my Army and the defeat of the Romans. This is not getting me any closer to the Queen and is more dangerous as time passes. They are likely to discover the ceremonial dagger, Madula’s ashes, her necklace or even the sacred sword of my people any of which could spell disaster for me.
If I do decide to run it could be along night over unfamiliar terrain and still accomplish nothing in the way of getting closer to their leader and finishing my sworn oath. Perhaps there can be some reasoning with these warriors Madula would say, “Might is not always right. Trusting in strength alone is foolishness.” I will await my opportunity to speak to their hearts and minds. May it come sooner than later. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ saxgoddess25 - 06:09am May 26, 2002 ET (#208 of 330) I have the soul of a bard and the heart of a warrior. My vengeance is swift and complete.
The time for battle does approach.
"An Amazon uses the skills she was given by Artemis at her birth. To fight a superior force is an act of the stupid or the vain. The Gods are not on the side of either."
Wise words from a wise woman. A tough woman. A regal woman. Cassandra had led her Nation into countless battles. Though a skilled warrior she had still borne the scars of a lifetime of fighting and she drilled the following words into her granddaughter's head, "A so called 'great warrior' that carries many scars is not as great as she would like to believe. Fight well my granddaugther, live long...let no sword or arrow or weapon smithed by human hands leave its mark on you. Then when they say that you were a great warrior you will truly deserve the name."
Saxy carried scars. Not all of them were physical. She had fought off all comers after her grandmother finally died. There had been many claimants over the years. Most of them were dead now. Her vengeance was swift and final, though for the most part her judgements were unerringly fair. A woman of passion and impulse, the Queen still managed to keep a grip on her emotion when she needed to, until now. Her heart was busy tap-dancing on her brain. Coherent thought was difficult considering the proximity of the woman riding beside her. Lucystar. Saxy rose and fell in time to her horse's gait, each beat echoing the thud of her heart. Don't be foolish girl, Cassandra's voice echoed in her head, This is a time for war, not love. Focus on the future and the upcoming carnage. Blood first, then desire.
Shaking her head to clear away the thoughts, Saxy took in her surroundings for the first time since leaving camp. They were blanketed by a canopy of trees. Her scouts ranged ahead, returning finally with news that a Roman camp lie straight ahead of them, not a candlemark's travel away. Raising her hand, the Queen signaled the band to stop.

------------------------------------------------------------------------ saxgoddess25 - 06:34am May 26, 2002 ET (#209 of 330) I have the soul of a bard and the heart of a warrior. My vengeance is swift and complete.
A sword is a living thing, sworn to the service of just one person
Dismounting from A'Mira, Saxy drew her sword. Unlike most warriors she did not wear it in a scabbard on her back, but rather it was slung from her belt in a long leather sheath. Many often wondered how she managed to fight with it there, just waiting for it to get tangled up in her long limbs and trip her up with fatal consequences. That never happened. The Queen had a whole different way of movement when she wore the blade than she did normally. It changed her somehow.
Handing A'Mira's reins to Lucystar, Saxy removed herself from the group and strode away through the trees for several paces. There she stopped, turning the sword over in her hands. The blade was long and double bladed, perhaps three finger-widths wide and razor sharp. The hilt was wrapped in fine golden wire crafted by strong Amazon hands. Set into the pommel cap was a large blue diamond and the handguard bore a complicated knotwork pattern, accented by sapphires. Engraved into the blade itself was a wolf's head and an inscription. Reverently she buried the point of the sword into the soft earth and knelt before it, her head resting on the pommel. She could almost feel Cassandra's presence radiating out of the cool metal which pressed against her brow. Taking a deep breath, she spoke softly to the Gods.
"Artemis, grant me the wisdom to lead my people into battle this day against our enemy, the unworthy army of Rome. Ares, make strong my arm and let my blade strike true. By all the Gods, Roman blood will flow like a river and my sisters will be avenged. Hades be ready, for Tartarus will be full to bursting by the setting of the moon."
With fire in her heart and in her eyes, Saxy rose slowly, brought the blade to her lips and kissed it. Then she resheathed it and strode back to the waiting band of Amazons. Her eyes fell upon the familiar face of Zena amongst the warriors. Saxy raised an eyebrow at her disheveled appearance, then nodded and turned to address the assembled Amazons.
"To fight the Romans in a frontal assault would be lunacy. Luckily the area where they are camped is surrounded by trees. I want those of you who are the best archers to encircle the camp via the trees and wait for my signal. You will lay down covering fire into the Roman encampment until melee is joined, then you may enter the fray wherever you are needed. I don't want any hand to hand fighting until the archers have had a chance to do their work, then it's every woman for herself. Aside from the archers there will be two groups, one led by myself, the other led by Zena."
At this a surprised murmur arose among the amazons which the Queen stilled immediately. "Zena, you take your group to the north, Lucystar and I will take ours to the south. If all goes to plan, we'll meet in the middle with the heads of those Roman dogs on our spearpoints. Are there any questions."
Silence greeted her ears.
"Good. For the glory of the Amazon Nation."
"To a strong Amazon Nation!"

You're Going to do What?
Little Gabby was done cooking and was eager to be of assistance so I asked her if she would like to guard Leara. Her eyes shone with excitement as she solemnly nodded yes.
I took her over to Leara who had managed to prop herself up against a stone wall during her few moments of consciousness. I told Little Gabbyfan, "If she moves or talks to you, just give her a good klunk, don't try to take her on just yet, she may be of use to us still."
I left Gabby to guard Leara. I did however keep a watchful eye as I wandered around the camp. I was full of nervous energy and bristled with excitement. I thought I could expend some of my energy by brushing my new horse Divine Retribution . As I began to brush him I noticed a carefully wrapped packet wedged underneath the saddle . With little effort I was able to dislodge it. Just as I had the packet in my hand Puella re-emerged looking tear stained and weary.
Puella looked at me pleadingly and said" Evergreen was rambling feverishly and she kept calling me her sister. Is it true?"Do you know if Evergreen is my sister?"
I decided to tell her what pieces I had put together. "Puella as far as I know there is a good chance that you are her sister. I have suspected since that day that I took your necklace that you may be more than just a Roman slave that you may Amazon blood may coursing through your veins.
It was all just conjecture until I came across this one(pointing at Leara) and her TAD group. I didn't trust them and I still don't... but you know the strange thing is I remember that they were looking for you too. Anyway, my suspicions were confirmed when Leara's second let it slip that you were of Amazon blood and heritage. I think they know a great deal more about you."
"Would you like to add a little more persuasion so we can get her to tell you what you need to know about yourself and your family?
Puella laughed and said "What more can you do to her? Look at her, she is helpless and defenseless?!
As I spoke, I gestured towards Little Gabby and Leara and said to Puella in all seriousness, "No enemy is never helpless or defenseless unless their dead. Never underestimate your opponent. Never."
Puella turned towards Little Gabbyfan just in time to see Gabby obey my order to the letter,Leara had awoke and tried to scratch her back. Little Gabby had her staff right in Leara's face.
Being that Gabby had had a tough day and was still a little young and very enthusiastic,we ventured over, afraid that Gabby might put herself in harms way.
Puella and I had both drawn our weapons as a precaution. However, when Leara began to laugh I was tempted to use my sword. Leara's laughter just rankled me. I knew she thought she had the upper hand. Leara's laughing must of bothered Little Gabby too because said "You think this is funny?" then she klunked her in the head with her staff.
I began to laugh uncontrollably my eyes filled with tears as I replayed the scene in my head; how ridiculous it must have looked to have three women drawn on one bound prisoner, and then to have the littlest one strike the blow...
Not much later much to Little Gabby's consternation Leara came to again. Gabby wasted no time she knocked Leara out yet again.
After observing gabby in action, Puella asked "So what is it that you want to do to this Leara person and how can it help me?
I said," I have had many ideas in this area. I want to do something that will cause her much pain now and depending upon where her true allegiances are will cause her either great grief or safety." Let's brand her."
Puellas eyes widened with awe, "Your going to do what? "

You're Going to do What? continued
"We are going to brand her! If we still had Justinian's signet ring I'd have us use that but I think I have a better idea... how about we brand "To a Strong Amazon Nation" on her back.?
Puella had a blank stare as she asked "Why that?
I smiled and said, "For many generations,it has been a call to arms for the Amazon nation. "Always before a battle and sometimes even after a battle the Queen gathers us to give us our orders but she also speaks to rally her troops.
Given your history with the Romans you must know that Rome has a similar battle cry "For the Glory of Rome". Well We Amazons have have "To a Strong Amazon Nation".
Puella in a barley audible whisper said," To a Strong Amazon Nation." she smiled as the words left her tongue... "I think I like it." she said.
I grinned and said "Good! In time the words will have a deep and powerful meaning for you. Almost like this branding because this branding can be a double-edged sword for Leara, it's consquences will depend on where her true Alligances lie.
Once we let her go she could either attack the Romans or our Sisters. If caught by the Romans they will be sure to see the branding and think she's aligned with us. If caught by our sisters, they will know to be leary of her, unless I spread the word otherwise. Her words and actions will dictate whether this branding brings her harm or safety.
Puella asked incredously, "Are you Really going to let her go,after she kidnapped you? "You're not going to hold her hostage or kill her??"
"Nope, we going to brand her,and we are going to question her about what she knows about you and your past.
Before the setting sun we are going to get Evergreen,Little Gabbyfan and you back to the Amazon camp, then I will take Leara to see Queen Saxy..if the Queen confers I will release her..if not her Fate is in Queen Saxy's hands."
Now let's see what we can use as a branding iron around this place. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ phalon - 12:04pm May 26, 2002 ET (#212 of 330)
After leaving Evergreen in Little Gabbyfan's care, Phalon headed off in the direction in which she saw multiple sets of hoof prints on the forest floor. Not long after, she came to a river. She dismounted Agapanthus and led him down the riverbank to let him drink.
Phalon knelt down at the river's edge, cupped her hands, and splashed some cool water on face, dusty from this day's travels. As she wiped her brow with the sleeve of her tunic, she caught an odor drifting in the breeze.
She turned her head towards the direction from which the stink came and gazed upon a pile of rotting fish entrails. Flies swarmed upon the whole viseral mess, thousands of them, eating, regurgitating the bits of fish guts they consumed, all the while mating amongst the orgy of food. The sight sickened Phalon. The constant buzz, deafening to her ears. She felt her bile rise in her throat and fought to keep her gorge down. The buzzing grew louder and louder, echoing in her brain. The stench was overwhelming, and overcame her. Phalon fell back against the riverbank and passed out. In her unconscience state, she dreamnt.
She was standing in the middle of a large field where a great battle took place. A scene of death. Bodies lay intertwined, rotting in the heat of the sun. Flies were everwhere, feasting on the decomposing flesh. Horse and rider both prostrate on the field where they were struck down. Faces frozen in the deathmask of agony. Charred bodies, blackened from fire and smoke. Severed limbs strewn amongst the whole corpses of both Amazon and Roman. The ground red from a river of blood. Small fires still burned here and there, evidence that Greek Fire had been used. The smell of death, decay, and burning flesh was horrific. The roar of the buzzing flies, inescapable. Then she saw it. The sun shone on the jewel encrusted hilt. Unmistakeable. Phalon's eyes followed the cold steel shaft down to where it's point stood embedded in the heart of it's victim. The sword's victim was it's owner's sister Amazon!
Phalon's hands went up to her temples, fingers entwining in her long sun-streaked hair, pulling it close to her scalp, head back, face turned up towards the heavens above, mouth wide open, and let forth a blood curdling scream.

"X" Marks the Spot..
I had been looking for something to use as a branding iron when I heard an ungodly blood curdling scream come from the riverbank. The scream was so primal,so agonized that I felt compelled to find it's source.I ran with all my might and stumbled as saw Phalon in a near catatonic state. Her mouth wide open from the scream, but unable to speak. I gently lifted her up. Phalon could not stand on her own accord, her body was now wooden and stiffened as if frozen.
I looked in her eyes. Phalon did not seem to be in residence, but rather somewhere beyond.. I took her in my arms and carried her back to camp. Maybe someone there would know what to for her.
Little Gabbyfan came running to meet me, fear filled her eyes when she saw Phalon in my arms. I whispered to her" She's alright little one, she's just in another place, another time."
LittleGabbyfan helped me lay Phalon next to Evergreen. I felt tears welling up in my eyes,I could no longer retain my composure. I looked around and couldn't help but thinking there's been so much damage done to my friends and my sisters before we've even taken on the Romans.
Puella came over to me and said,"You look beat. Given everything that has been going on I don't know if you still want to brand Leara but if you do I found some iron horseshoe nails that would heat up nicely."
I stared at the handful of nails she held in her grasp.Puella had good instincts and imagination the nails would heat up nicely but how would I hold them to brand Leara...?
My mind searched for an answer of how to utilize the nails. Gabby's cooking tongs came to my mind. I could put the nails in the mouth of the tongs, heat the nails til they get piping hot, and then dip one end in the cold water. I now had the means by which to brand Leara.
"Come on Puella, I'm going to teach you how to brand!"
Not wanting to touch Leara's fish and poison sumac covered body,I once again lassoed and drug her body with my whip to the fire's edge.
I took the first nail from puella's outstretched hand and placed it in the tongs mouth and watched the end turn a fiery crimson red.I cut the blindfold off of Leara's eye with the tip of my sword. I slowly rotated the burning ember in front of Leara's eyes and said," Now you're going to answer this girls questions or you'll be sporting my mark."
Leara sneered, "You wouldn't dare. I won't tell anything to the likes of you, you little piss ant.!"
Puella shook her head and sighed."You shouldn't of said that!"
I cut part of her tunic so it exposed her right shoulderblade. I took the tong with the ember still burning red hot and pressed it deep into the shoulder blade. As I formed the first stroke of the first letter Leara screamed in bloody agony and passed out from the pain .All I had branded was
"X"
Puella looked at me. I said,"I decided she needs to remember who did this to her...I am going to brand her with my name first so she never forgets who did this to her.
When she wakes back up,I'll do the "W".. if she cooperates I will do it quickly ..if not it could take some time...

My Patience has Run OUT
I think I have been a good sport up ‘til now about this whole recapture but, there are limits even to my patience. I will take my leave no matter the cost they have crossed the line this time. I do not think there is a self-respecting warrior who would disagree with me.
The last drag was a really nice piece of work, I was able to loosen my hands and they will be free at last. The drag too was across a sharp rock that has dislodged one of my favorite daggers, my first. The pain in my right shoulder is intense it burns and aches with the fury of Hera. I pass out with the pain and wait for the next opportunity. Xwpfan will indeed be sorry.
Xwpfan pokes me with a staff “You awake? Ready for the next letter?” With a second poke I grab the end of the staff and force it into her chest. The force of the blow coupled with the surprise sends Xwpfan flying through the air landing on her back. Puella was nearby and so I land blow to her head knocking her to the ground and out.
Xwpfan is slow getting up and Gabbyfan comes at me first from behind. Her staff skills are good but she still favors the wounded side revealing her weakness. With a frown I land a blow to her wound and she slumps down on the ground by EG’s side.
Returning to fight Xwpfan, I whistle for my horse who gallops between us long enough for me to pull my peoples sacred sword from its hiding place under the saddle. This will be the last time I suffer today. I am calm and manage to find a smile crossing my face even with this disgusting gag. The fight commences and Xwpfan is as good as ever focused and motivated but, without my rage I am not giving anything away and pressing every advantage until at last Xwpfan is forced to yield.
It is so nice to finally remove this gag. I make quick work of tying up the camp. Xwpfan will enjoy a special treat from me. I take care to stake out all four limbs spread eagle and remove all weapons including her breast dagger. She will not be happy but neither am I. Their weapons I leave in a pile by the fire. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ leara - 07:21pm May 26, 2002 ET (#215 of 330)
Time to Clear the Air
It is time to clear the air. I start by returning to the stream and cleaning myself up.
I sit by the fire gazing at my sword it makes my heart race and my breath grow shallow. The craftsmanship, the shine and color make me swoon. I notice that Gabbyfan and Puella are awake and are in awe of my sword. The blade is a narrow, two edged, hand wide and black as ebony with a blood channel of silver down the center on both sides. The hilt was carved silver with space for wielding with both hands but it did no require it. The pommel was jewel encrusted and the sword favored neither the left nor the right wielder. It seems silly to get this flushed with excitement about a sword but it is the last thing of my people.
I splash some water on Xwpfan and stand up to speak to the assembled group.
”You know my name but you do not know me. Please allow me to tell you a little about myself. I am the last of my people The Tribe of the Trees. I was befriended by an old woman when I was a young child only later as she neared death did she reveal herself to me. She was the Amazon Queen Madula of the Lost Tribe far far to the North, her life she dedicated to tracking down Amazons freeing them or returning their spirits to the land of the Amazons.”
“Puella you were to be her last obligation and then she was heading to her land to live until death. You are of Roman blood, a full citizen but, your mother was fond of an Amazon brought home by her husband as a prize. When Daria left she took both her daughter, EG, and you, Puella. You share a father Justinian.”
"Madula adopted me as her daughter and bound me by an oath to return Puella to the Amazons and her half sister. On her death bed she asked to have her ashes scattered in the Amazon holy, resting place. I also swore to make the Roman dogs pay for all the injuries and death they brought to my friends and family.”
“I am deeply hurt and disappointed that the Amazons have turned out to be no better than the savage dogs I am bound to slay.”
A tear finds its way from the corner of my eye across my cheek. With a pause I continue, “I found myself actually starting to believe all the great stories of my ‘Mother Madula’. That is probably the worst part to have a dream and watch it shattered. This is not news to me or anything new in my miserable life. My wolf was the last of my second family and so now I am alone, save my friends of TAD."
"I will not kill with out provocation so do not give me any. I give this warning to you: ‘Stay out of my way!' I am going to join the rest of TAD and when the Romans are gone so will we depart from this place.”
“I will send word that you are indisposed here as soon as possible. I do not mean you any harm but I will not suffer in silence any longer.” With a quick look and change of EG’s bandage and the wound of the littlest warrior. I swing atop my horse and begin riding hard away from the camp. Mother Madula watch over them and keep them safe. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Joxcenia - 08:39pm May 26, 2002 ET (#216 of 330) I Came... I Saw... I Went Home! lol
Joxcenia heard a call, and knew it was Solaria. She called back and jumped down from her tree. "Why are you following me?" She asked.
"I'm tired of helping out at the hospice," Solaria said with a groan. Then growled, "I want to join in the fight!" She raised her hand in the air and swooshed it about, as though she were holding her sword and clashing it in a fight.
"Then let's get going," Jox huffed. "You've wasted enough of my time as it is."
Solaria jumped on her horse and waited as Jox leapt on and off a rock and flipped over onto Harmony. They rode in the direction the falcon had flown, both quiet in their own thoughts.
Suddenly, they hear a faint, shrill scream coming from the direction that they are heading in, and pick of their pace. The scream came from quite a distance, and whatever was happening to this person would be long over by the time they arrived. Artemis watch over this person if they be a friend.
As Jox and Solaria neared where they believed the scream had come from, they hid their horses and took to the trees. They came to a campsite where one woman was babbling like an idiot to several who were tied up. Jox recognized Xwpfan, Little Gabbyfan, Evergreen, Phalon, and.... Puella. Her skin began to crawl.
"I will not kill with out provocation so do not give me any. I give this warning to you: ‘Stay out of my way!' I am going to join the rest of TAD and when the Romans are gone so will we depart from this place.” The woman continued. “I will send word that you are indisposed here as soon as possible. I do not mean you any harm but I will not suffer in silence any longer.” The woman took a quick look around before changing Evergreen’s bandage and then tending to the wound of Little Gabbyfan. She swung atop a horse and began riding hard, away from the camp.
Jox and Solaria watched closely. Any aggressive movement toward their fellow Amazons would have been met with a swift and severe blow. The woman's actions and words proved true, so Jox and Solaria let her go. Releasing their fellow Amazons was more important than pursuing a mad woman.
I have to get to the Queen, Jox signaled to Solaria. You untie them while I continue on to find the war party. With that she made her way through the trees back to Harmony and rode on.

------------------------------------------------------------------------ zena - 10:39pm May 26, 2002 ET (#217 of 330) "Agere Sequitur Esse"
Crusader
It wasn't long after Zena joined the tribe that Queen Saxy dismounted her horse and strode off to offer her usual prayers to Artemis, Ares and the spirit of her grandmother Casandra. While they waited Zena's thoughts wandered back to the hospice where she imagined her friends were safe. She wondered if they would see each other again, ever spend a moment of peace at an evening campfire.
Suddenly the Queen returned and Zena looked up to see her take stock of Zena's appearance. Chagrined, she began brushing the leaves and dirt from her leathers. Running her fingers through her hair she found the downy under feathers of a falcon. Puzzled, she thought to herself, "I don't remember even seeing a falcon today." The voice of Queen Saxy cut through her reverie. "Aside from the archers there will be two groups, one led by myself, the other led by Zena."
At this a surprised murmur arose among the Amazons which the Queen stilled immediately. "Zena, you take your group to the north, Lucystar and I will take ours to the south. If all goes to plan, we'll meet in the middle with the heads of those Roman dogs on our spearpoints. Are there any questions?"
Zena was so startled by this unexpected sign of trust from the Queen that she nearly forgot to acknowledge the commission. She broke the silence that followed, "I obey My Queen. Let those who are ready to be under my command come with me." She knew that some of her sisters still were wary of her and would prefer to remain with Queen Saxy and her second.
The group split nearly into two parts and the warriors dismounted, leaving their horses tied near some trees. "We will move in silence and take our positions on the north edge of the forest behind the archers in the canopy. Wait for my signal to enter the battle. It is essential that we do not let them form into a phalanx. With their shields and pikes locked together in that formation they are unstoppable. Keep them separate and we have them. We take no prisoners and nothing must remain of this camp when we are through. Now swear the oath on your swords." Zena drew her sword from it's sheath on her back, running her thumb over the emerald from Evergreen's sword. The ten warriors with her did the same and they touched the points of their blades as she led them in the oath, "I swear by my sword to fight honorably and courageously for my sisters and a strong Amazon Nation." They sheathed their swords and Zena sent them two by two to their positions, admiring the way they silently became one with the forest cover. Finally she herself left, painfully aware that since the numbers were not even there was no one left to fight at her back.
High in the canopy the archers had settled into the trees and were watching the daily life of the soldiers below. If the Romans had been as attuned as the Amazons to what was around them, they would have known that all the forest held it's breath and waited for the signal of the Amazon Warrior Queen.

Puella's perspective
Watching Xwpfan and Leara’s every move Puella stood by listening for anything that was said. Seeing her face without the blindfold, I recognize the woman. Could she be a member of the Roman underground? Why would she be out here? As Xwpfan taunted her with the branding tools, Leara sneered, "You wouldn't dare. I won't tell anything to the likes of you, you little piss ant!" I shook my head and sighed, "You shouldn't have said that!" Xwpfan quickly exposed Leara’s right shoulder blade and branded an X. Leara soon passed out from the pain. I looked at Xwpfan as she talked about branding her name into the woman. Stating that this could take some time. I can’t help but think that this is not the way to get the answers I seek. Leara will need to rest or she’ll never make it through the branding alive.
I walked behind Xwpfan putting my hands on her shoulders, and began to massage her tense muscles. “You can’t keep going like this, you need to rest or you will be worthless when the war with the Romans begins. Any information that I need can wait. I sense that something big is about to happen.” Slowly she relaxed a little. I can’t help but think back to just a few days ago, when my hands near her neck would have meant sudden death to either one of us. Leaning over I look into her face, “So where is my necklace? You mentioned you took it.” The words made Xwpfan laugh. “Seriously, I expect it back around my neck.” I spoke in a serious yet teasing manner. “I gave it to Phalon. Once she comes out of her trance, I’ll get it back from her.” Pleased with the answer I stood back up and continued to rub. “I’ll go check on the others. You try and rest a minute.” I said as I patted her shoulder then walked off.
Little Gabbyfan sat watching Phalon and Evergreen. I walked up next to her and she tensed up. “It is only me,” I whisper as non-threatening as possible. “Just checking on your patients here.” Phalon is still in her trance. “Where are you mystic one?” No change can be seen in her as my words enter her ear. “I hope you come back soon, I hear you have my necklace.” I smiled and looked over to Gabbyfan. “She will be fine little one, she must complete the vision before coming back to us.” Gabbyfan still looks at me with great distrust. “You are right not to trust other’s too soon.” She seemed shocked at my words. I lean over Evergreen checking her wound, “very little blood, that is a good sign. Your friends should wake soon Gabbyfan.”

Puella's perspective continued
Out of the corner of my eye I catch Xwpfan taunting Leara once more. “No rest for the wicked.” I jested as I walked back towards the scene. Next thing I know Leara is free and everything went black. When I awaken I am bound, and my head aches. Little Gabbyfan is nearby and bound as well. Her eyes are open. I turn my head to get a glimpse of Evergreen and Phalon. They haven’t been harmed. Then I scan the area for Xwpfan, she is staked a little ways off. She looks to be unconscious. Gabbyfan and I watch Leara admire her sword. It is a thing of beauty. Soon she gets up and walks towards Xwpfan, splashing water on her face.
Leara then began to rant. “Please allow me to tell you a little about myself. I am the last of my people The Tribe of the Trees. I was befriended when I was a young child, by the Amazon Queen Madula of the Lost Tribe far far to the North. Her life she dedicated to tracking down Amazons freeing them or returning their spirits to the land of the Amazons.” Puella you were to be her last obligation. You are of Roman blood, a full citizen but your mother was fond of an Amazon brought home by her husband as a prize. When Daria left she took both her daughter, EG, and you, Puella. You share a father Justinian. Madula adopted me as her daughter and bound me by an oath to return Puella to the Amazons and her half sister.” Everything else that she spoke was lost to me, as I digested her words. She was here to help me and all I did was cause her pain. I watched as Leara rode off upon her horse.
We were not there long before a young Amazon approached us from the trees. I did not know her, but I know she is there to help. She dropped down to the ground and crept over to where I was, pulled out a dagger and cut the ropes that bound me. Then she moved on to Gabbyfan. I quickly made my way to Xwpfan. Looking down at her I couldn’t help but smile, “at least she didn’t brand you,” I said as I untied her hands from the stakes. Leaving her to release the rest of her binds I walk over to Evergreen and Phalon. They were both resting. Gabbyfan was already there, she introduced me to Solaria. “Joxcenia is on her way to the war party, she left me behind to see that you get free,” she explained. Looking up there was Xwpfan standing behind me. “You need to get to your sisters.” I said, knowing that is what she was thinking. “You go ahead, I will stay here with Evergreen and Phalon. Unless you have a better idea.”…

Not Everything That Quacks is a Duck
Evergreen was traveling home. The herbs from the healing pack were working Phalon’s magic. The small bit of the poppy, and Arnica applied to her wound, gave Evergreen relief from the pain and allowed her to go deep within herself.
Deep in the dream state, the Flacon flew back to earth and returned Evergreen to her body. She now sat atop a mountain, snow covered the ground and ,yet Evergreen felt no cold. The sky above was orange with light gray clouds striating the sky. There was no sound. This was the quiet of eternity.
She watched as a stranger approached. As the stranger neared, Evergreen became cognizant that this was not a foreigner at all. It was Phalon. Phalon was dressed in royal blue, belted with a silver chain from which many amulets hung. Evergreen was struck by her sheer beauty and look of peace, that comes from within, emitting from Phalon’s face. She possessed the look that comes with Knowing.
Phalon silently held out her hand. Tumbling out, with the sound of a waterfall, came a necklace that swung by Phalon's finger. The necklace glowed as it slowly spun. Evergreen was mesmerized and watched as the events of the past were shown with every turn of the amulet hanging from the chain. Evergreen sensed that this was the chain of life.
“Why do you show this to me?” “I have not the power to undo what is done.”
Phalon’s softly touched the spinning amulet stopping it. Evergreen watched as the event that changed her life forever was replayed.
“Take that one, and ONLY that one. Kill all the rest!”
The sword comes crashing down on the charging figure with weapon held high from the man atop the great stallion. The figure takes the full force of the blow to the back, and with time slowed, legs collapse and the figure falls to the ground with a sickening thud .
Evergreen feels the pain as if it were happening at the moment. She cries out. Phalon touches Evergreen lips and the pain is gone.

Not Everything That Quacks is a Duck...cont.
“Take THAT one!” And ,again with that command, the man on the stallion whips his horse and is gone.
The figure lies on the ground and watches as a Roman soldier grabs a girl, throws her onto his horse and rides away with her screams being heard until they were out of sight.
The killing storm that rained down on the village had spent itself out. Nothing remained but burning huts, the cries of the wounded, the wails of those finding loved ones gone forever, and this one figure on the ground watching her life blood rolling out like a small river to the sea on the other side.
Out of the shadows steps a figure. Small footfalls, someone kneels, touches the figure on the ground, turns her over and cradles the head. Tears fall washing the blood from the figure’s face. The face looks up into source of the tears.
“Leara?”
With an explosion of color the amulet begins to spin again. Phalon places her hand on the side of Evergreen’s head and knowledge of the past days flows in. Phalon next touches Evergreen's wound. A searing heat courses through the skin and then the pain retreats. There is such a rush ,as with a great wind, that instantly pulls Evergreen back to the present.
Her eyes flash open and see Phalon lying next to her. The wound in her shoulder is healed and she is acutely alert and aware there has been a great wrong done this day. She sees her sword leaning against a tree. Evergreen jumps to her feet and with one fell swoop has her beloved sword back in the hand that it so rightfully belongs. The left hand welcomes back its source of empowerment.
Pointing the sword at the others gathered there, Evergreen screams, “STOP this… ALL of you STOP this and hear me out...!”

Living up to code
I had just branded an X on Leara. As she laid there before me passed out from pain, I should've been pleased with my act of revenge but instead was overcome by the stench of burning flesh and pangs of regret from my own conscience.
Suddenly,I felt a warm velvety hand on my shoulders.I slightly turned to see who it was. It was Puella. Puella ever so gently began to caress my neck and shoulders. Her warm touch melted away the stress and strain of the day. It seemed so sureal the same hands that were now massaging me would've surely strangled the life out of me just a few days ago.
"Branding Leara is no way to get answers." Puella said as she softly rubbed my neck."You do know there's no way she'll survive if you continue the branding." I nodded knowingly.
It was as if Puella was verbalizing my very thoughts. My mind raced,as Puella whispered," You can't keep going like this, you need some rest or you'll be worthless when the big war with the Romans begins "
The Romans! I had gotten so caught up in my twisted and vengeful plans that I had nearly forgotten about the Romans.
My place was with my sisters fighting the true enemy not messing around with this girl .. but there was no way to go back on my word, I had voiced my intent to brand her, there was no way I could go back on my word unless... Leara was to escape.
As the idea got focused in my head I could feel my body uncoil it's tenseness whether it was from Puella's gentle touch or from the anticipation of my new plan I could scarcely tell.
As my eyes fluttered with overwhelming relaxation, Puella leaned in to my face and asked "Where's my necklace, you mentioned you took it?"
I laughed at the absurdity of it all. Here this woman with equal skills as mine, who was quite capable of snapping my neck at any moment was now asking me about her necklace much like a small child would.
Puella spoke again with a more serious tone," I expect to have it around my neck."
Now that we were allies I knew it was time to tell her the truth." I gave your necklace to Phalon. Once Phalon comes out of her trance, I'll get it back from her."
I could feel Puella's acceptance of my answer in my neck and shoulders for she began to kneed my shoulders much deeper much like a lump of dough. After a few moments she patted my shoulder and told me to rest as she went to check on the others.
Left alone, I began to put my plan into action. I went over to Leara who was still out cold and with a stick jarred a rope or two a little loose. I couldn't do much more than that otherwise it would be obvious to everyone
I then went over to Divine Retribution and he nuzzled me. I hated to surrender such a noble horse, but I untied him so that he'd be ready if she called...
I put my breast dagger deep into the ground,if things went too wrong I was going to need a way to protect myself and the others.
Lastly, I grabbed the packet I had taken from underneath Leara's saddle bag. I found myself wishing that I had taken the time earlier to examine it's content, but there was no time now. I quickly wrapped it in a piece of scroll to better secure it and then scrawled a quick note to Little Gabby on the outer scroll piece.
Dear Little One- It has been my honor and my privilege to have spent this time with you. I see so much promise in you. You are posses great love and loyalty and I am sure you are fully grown you will be one of our finest warriors and friend.
I have not been such a good friend to you though. My actions of the last few days were wrong. Although I have not broken the letter of the law, I have definitely violated it's spirit. I hope that you know that Amazons should not act in blood lust or in revenge as I have done here. I forgot that for awhile and set a bad example for you.
Now I must try to set things right if I can. It may cost me my life, but it is the right thing to do.
I hope to see you again soon little one. Xwpfan

Living up to code continued
I knew it would be safe there no one would ever think Gabby would be carrying anything of importance.
Knowing the packet was secure I walked back over to Leara and I growled, "I'll give you a chance to escape if you swear not to hurt the others. Do what you will with me."
All she could do was grunt, I had to take that for a yes for I saw Puella was heading our way, so I loudly began to taunt Leara again as not to raise suspicion.
I yelled ,"Are you awake?" and poked her with a staff.I was taken a back, surprised really.I had not expected to have a staff rammed into my chest.I had not anticipated that she could get herself so loose so fast. I was thrown to the ground and before I knew it there was Puella knocked out beside me!
I struggled to rise but the blow to the chest had knocked the air out of my lungs. Little Gabby tried valiantly to come to my defense, but wounded she is no match for Leara. Leara struck her in her wounded side and fell her next to EG.
My plan had brought nothing but more pain and misery. I heard her call for her horse.. I grimaced as I heard his thundering hoof steps and I pray to Artmeis that she is just going to ride off.
Leara had other plans, she reached for the horses underbelly and pulled out a magnificent sword. As I saw the blade emerge I ducked and rolled , unsheathed my own sword and began to feel for where I had hid my breast dagger earlier.
Leara swung at me with her sword.I arose and I met her blade with my own quick thrust. Under normal circumstances it would have been an interesting battle. Instead I afforded her every advantage for I was wild with fear, that she would hurt those I cared for. I purposely gave way to save my strength for what I could only imagine what was to come.
I stumbled and fell to the ground. Leara came over to me with a superior grin on her face and disarmed me of my sword and spotted my my little breast dagger on the ground beside me. I growled" you better honor the deal or kill me now.. because if you harm them any more I will hunt you the rest of your days!
Next thing I knew I was staring up at the sun staked out like a big X. It looked like I had been left to die. But I couldn't help but wonder if this meant she's accepted my deal. I began to laugh uncontrollably as I realized that I branded her with an X and she had made me into a human X.
The sun was beating down on me and I kept trying to raise my head to see if everyone was safe. I could see that she had them all tied up.
I must of passed out at some point because Leara dumped cold water all over me, almost sending my body into shock. She stood up and gave some diatribe about being befriended by an Amazon queen and that finding Puella was Madula's dying wish and Leara's sworn obligation. She even claimed to be Madula's adopted daughter.
Deep inside the story resonated with some truth, but given my present condition I was not yet ready to accept it. After her speech she tended to the others and said she send word that we were indisposed.
We did not have to wait to see if her word was good, for a young Amazon can to our rescue and untied all of us.
I looked around and was relieved,we were all alive. Puella looked at me and for the first time I could see and feel the quiet strength she posed as she told me to go join my sisters, that they needed me. That she would watch over the others.
I whispered," I would love it if we could fight the Romans side by side but right now I am entrusting you with lives that I care deeply about...including yours. Take care of yourself. Remember, To a Strong Amazon Nation."
With that I took off into the woods in search of the Amazon war party. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ dscout - 12:00am May 28, 2002 ET (#224 of 330)
Scroll of the Dumb Scout 7
Day 1 It is afternoon and we have been under full sail of the winds since before dawn. The plan had worked out well there were no major injuries among us. The ships are loaded down with Romans and supplies. We stand proud on the ships decks but, our thoughts trail off to Leara hoping she too is finding success.
The money I would give to see the Roman’s faces when they realize their losses of supplies, men and means of escape. Confusion and frustration reigning supreme as the Romans scramble to figure out how this mass desertion occurred. Then scrambling to try and fix the gaps in their defenses.
We have been out of sight of land now for many hours and it is now safe to lighten our load. To maintain the desertion assumption we have taken every Roman soldiers body with us and so now bind them together and toss then in our wake. This will keep the beaches clean and free form any unnecessary alert.
I wish it was this easy and fun to take out the trash at home. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ zena - 09:22pm May 28, 2002 ET (#225 of 330) "Agere Sequitur Esse"
Silence
Close by insects hum and carry on their own life and death struggles on the cushioned forest floor. Underfoot red-brown pine needles lying beneath ancient evergreens give off a clean and familiar scent and twigs drip sticky sap where they were broken. The sun flashes and dims in dappled patterns on the tree trunks as the wispy breeze gently brushes the boughs against the bark. Birds land on lower twigs and crane their necks at the figure sitting so very still in their midst. The figure seems to them to part of the trees, the floor, themselves; no scent of any emotion is in the air.
Men's voices float in from far away, mixed with the clang of metal and the pounding of hammers. Horses call back and forth and leather tack creaks with their straining. The aroma of a camp stew drifts up and with it the smell of sweat.
A rabbit creeps out from the bushes and sniffs tentatively at a still leather boot and the shank of a spear. Sensing no threat the rabbit moves on.
Zena remains.

It's Time To Roast Some Pigs!!!
Joxcenia slowed her pace as she drew near where the Roman camp was located. She could feel the tension in the air, and knew that the battle would soon begin. She signaled Harmony to hide and await her next order, before climbing up into a tree. She listened for any calls from her sister Amazons, so that she could get an idea of who was where, but all were silent.
They must be awaiting the Queen's signal, Joxcenia thought. She let out a call of her own to alert the Queen to her presence, and that she had some important news to give her. Now there's nothing to do but wait for either a return signal, or for the Queen to seek me out.
As she watched for any Roman activity, she thought back to just a short time earlier when she and Solaria had discovered several of their sister Amazons tied up. Puella had been among them. Had she completed her mission? And whose side is she on? Perhaps the Romans know that they're about to be attacked. Maybe they have several other troops circling around us to trap us in our own little war tactics? Is Puella the one with the information that will lead us to the weapons? We need those weapons! And soon. Without them we're all either dead, or slaves.
Joxcenia's stomach turned at the thought of her sister Amazons becoming gladiators in the coliseums. Few of them would ever become subservient enough to be used as slaves. And those who refused to fight as gladiators would no doubt become food for the lions. Roman scum! How can they not allow others to live as they themselves believe they have the right to live? Why do they believe that they have the right to be the masters? Why can't all be equal? Why can't all be allies? Why must there be those who are forced to serve? And why is it most always a woman? Haven't we Amazons proven that a woman can be strong? Haven't we proven that it doesn't take away from our position as a woman?
Weakness in a man is no more "womanly" than strength in a woman is "manly", why can't these pigs see that and propose an alliance? Why must they feel they have to dominate us? Well, they're going to see just how easy we are to dominate! And we're going to rub their noses in it all the way back to Rome!!! Joxcenia caught herself before she could scream out: "To a STRONG Amazon Nation!"

Why do we fight Romans
I hadn't gotten far from camp when Solaria came running up behind me and said,"Puella thought you might like some company." I nodded and smiled.
I looked at Solaria she had been trained well, but had never been to war and any Amazon warrior knows there is a world of difference between training and War. I was nervous for her so I was going over our plans when she asked me a question.
"Why do we fight the Romans? Is it because they've killed so many of our sisters."Solaria asked
I stopped dead in my tracks, she need to understand why she could loose her life that very day and I needed to explain.
"The Romans seek our destruction. The Romans see themselves as the only ones with the right to exist and to be free.
We have lost many sisters into slavery, to the Roman colusiems and even death. The Romans have overwhelming self-pride.They look to send us into extinction. These men do not just kill our warriors, they kill our mothers, our sisters, our cooks and our artisans. Every facet of Amazon life has been touched and ruined and or killed by the Romans.
Romans have forever changed the Amazon nation... and they have changed me. If it weren't for the Romans I would not be the warrior I am today.
My lineage is not of a warrior but rather that of Artistains. My mother and her mother before her were talented, and creative women. My grandmother worked with the clay from the earth. It is her cistern in which you draw water from.
My mother was a woman of great vision and talent. When you wear your ceremonial mask, it is of her design. Queen Saxy's mask is the greatest and also the last mask she ever created.
Weeks before Princess Saxy's coming of age my mother, my grandmother and several other older Amazons were out looking for the perfect feathers to complete the mask of the Queen.
They were not far from where we stand now, when they were attacked by an advance party Roman soldiers. Our sisters fought valiantly, they managed to take out about half the party, but it was not enough... their screams and their cries echoed throughout the forest.
I had been out hunting and heard their cries and their screams. I ran as fast as I could. I got there just in time to see a Roman soldier give my mother a final fatal blow about the head. As she fell I could see she had been trying to guard and protect my grandmother. My grandmother was laying on the ground dead, with the mask clutched in her hands.
I lunged at the officer, but I was not yet a warrior and he easily took me down. I laid there pinned under his weight, his for the taking. He tore me inside out .I tried desperately to claw and to bite him but to no avail. He conquered me .I felt so defeated and helpless. I turned my head so wouldn't see his face and to hide my shame. As I turned I was my mother's last breath and to watch my mother bleed out beside me..
After that Roman scum was finished with me, he stuck a sword in my side and he kicked and punched me and left me for dead. I awoke to find myself laying amongst a dozen or so Amazon corpses.
I ran back to camp and our tribe came and gathered the bodies and had a funeral pyre for them.
The mask my mother and grandmother gave their lives for was then reserved for when Saxy would ascend to the throne as Queen.
On that very day I realized I had failed to protect the people I loved and I swore that I would learn to fight and I would protect my Amazon sisters for all of my days.
Our tribe became my life, my reason for living. I am the last of my line, for I have no children. My sisters in the tribe are essentially my mother, my sisters, my aunts,my daughters and my friends. I carry them in my heart and in my soul.
I will do what I have to protect another innocent from being raped, murdered or enslaved by these Roman dogs. Even if it means fighting with my dying breath I will protect and defend those I care about."
Do you hear that,it sounds like Jox signaling her position. Stay

TAD 10 Time Out for Reflection
The ride to the Sea seems like an eternity, each step shoots pain through my shoulder and beaten body. The stench lingers in the air from the fish guts bath, anyone could track me today. The pain is a comfort in some ways it is real and partly deserved, I suppose.
My thoughts run wild from the crushing sadness of again being alone, watching helplessly the murder of my wolf being unable to prevent it. Then there is the guilt of having tied up the Amazons leaving them vulnerable to attack and I can not erase the look in the eyes of the youngest warrior as I struck a blow into her previous wound. I wonder too about TAD and how they are faring.
I was a formidable fighter but since I’ve been here nothing is going right. The hate in my heart has grown in to a rushing river of rage, I remember this feeling well. Now I must try to stop this monster from creeping back to the surface and taking control.
This has rapidly turned into a typical outing for us, TAD but, the stakes are too high and the cost so far almost too great to bear. Despite good intentions along with good deeds preformed by me the sum of my life still comes up wanting. In the end, there is nothing left but to get up and take my rightful place among my ancestors.
The Sea finally comes in to sight. I step in the salty water it stings my shoulder and it takes the foul odor from my nose. The crashing waves take my mind from the pain and stresses of the day lulling me to a restful relaxed state. Usually in these times of quiet I can hear the soft melodic tone of my mother, Madula but she is silent. I may have a deaf ear but, I think I have shamed her so deeply that there can be no redemption.
There is still the matter of unfinished business. The TAD are still under my command I must release them and send them home. Then is the matter of Madula’s last wish and her things that should remain with the Amazon Nation. Lastly there is the matter of summoning the courage to preserve what little dignity and honor I have left by living up to the Warriors Creed until the end.

Here and Now
Phalon returns to the present and finds herself laying on the forest floor, staring up at the sky through a canopy of trees. She is both physically and emotionally drained. What has just happened? She turns her head and sees Evergreen just starting to wake up. She closes her eyes again. She knows that Evergreen's wounds are healed. She knows because she herself did it in Evergreen's dream, and she was in Evergreen's dream because she had heard Evergreen calling her and simply went. But how?
Up until now, Phalon's visions had always been glimpses of other people's lives, past, present and of things yet to pass. The images were bits and pieces of knowledge, little snatches of information that she had to piece together to try to make the picture whole. This was different. She had never before actually entered someone else's mind, interacting with them on a different plane. What had allowed her to do this?
The necklace? She had held the necklace in the dream. Puella's mysterious necklace and it's unknown powers. What forces lay within the ancient silver and emerald talisman, and could did Puella control them? Could she harness the power and use it at her own free will? Did she even know what she possessed? And who exactly was Puella?
Phalon was sure she was the girl in her earlier visions, taken away by Justinian's soldiers and sold into slavery. She had been sure that Puella was Evergreen's half-sister, but now she wondered if that were true. Who was Leara?
Regardless of her lineage, Phalon knew she must get the necklace back into Puella's hands. Her mind replayed images from one of her earlier visions, a man speaking to a young slave girl, "Keep it always at your heart....There will come a time when you will need it's powers. Ask only once and choose wisely...." Images of carnage on a battle field flashed through Phalon's mind. Images of things to come, or could they be altered? Perhaps Puella's time was now.
"STOP this...ALL of you STOP this and hear me out...!" Evergreen's shouts brought Phalon back to this present day's moment in time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ leara - 06:11pm May 30, 2002 ET (#230 of 330)
TAD 11 Phase One
Time has passed by unmarked by me, the horse makes its way down to where the waves were crashing on the shore. I get out of the sea there is much to do and putting it off does not make it any easier.
The ride along the shore is uneventful but my thoughts still plague me I wonder will there ever be an end to this torment. I think about how harshly I have judged the Amazon people, I do not even know them well. No one should be judged based on the actions of one or two. I should not expect them to live up to the lofty ideals of my mother. I mean,I too have failed to live up to them these last few days.
An old tune pops into my head I once heard
“Say when you’re alone It’s better Cause nobody knows you”
“When no one’s your friend It’s better Cause no body leaves you”
I know at the end of this mission I will go on to the next place. This brings about many more questions to ponder.
If my adoption by Madula is binding will I be sent to the Amazon place of the dead? Or will I go the way of my first family to their resting place? Then there is the question of Tartarus or Elysian Fields? Or is there someplace else for those of us who do not know where we belong – Land of the Disinherited?
So it all comes back to the base questions: Who am I really? Am I self made or am I who the extension of those who created or molded me? Where did I really come from?
I am at our landing site and decide that these questions are of no real consequence as they change neither the past nor can they stop the future. As far as I know, there exists no one to reveal the truth to me so, I will have to find out when I cross that line.
I leave TAD their final orders to leave here as successful victors. They are to return to their homes and get about the business of living happy well adjusted lives. I will miss them but there is no need for them to face the Wrath of the Amazons.
Looking at our reserve stock of weapons I took several quivers of arrows, a bow and a sword. I have one more matter to finish before seeking an honorable end to pathetic miserable life.

Puella sat with little Gabbyfan, Evergreen and Phalon as we watch Xwpfan and the Amazon that freed us, Solaria, leave to find their way to the rest of the tribe. Little Gabbyfan sat quietly petting little dog, the expression of abandonment on her face. She missed her new mother Zena. When she notices me looking her expression immediately changes to the strong, self assured, responsible look, that she has portrayed ever since she became an Amazon. Staring at Evergreen and Phalon, both still unconscious I spoke, “You will rejoin Zena and the other Amazon’s soon little warrior.” Gabbyfan looked over at me as if her thoughts were being read. “I envy you Gabbyfan, you know exactly where you belong. I have never had that connection with another person, let alone a tribe… Oh, I almost forgot, Xwpfan left this for you.” I handed her the piece of parchment Gabbyfan began to read aloud.
Dear Little One- It has been my honor and my privilege to have spent this time with you. I see so much promise in you. You are posses great love and loyalty and I am sure you are fully-grown you will be one of our finest warriors and friend. I have not been such a good friend to you though. Gabbyfan and I turned to one another. “She’ll be fine, Solaria went with her, so she is not alone.” We started to examine the contents on the packet which Gabbyfan’s note was wrapped around. Suddenly Evergreen awoke. She jumped up and grabbed her sword. Pointing the sword at the others gathered there, Evergreen screams, “STOP this… ALL of you STOP this and hear me out...!” ------------------------------------------------------------------------ EvergreenLM - 01:45am May 31, 2002 ET (#232 of 330) "To Conquer Others is to Know Power...to Conquer Yourself is to Know the Way"
Oh What a Tangled Web We Weave
Pointing the sword at the others gathered there, Evergreen screams, “STOP this… ALL of you STOP this and hear me out...!”
Those gathered nearby were startled to see Evergreen not only awake, but awake and apparently well. No one moved as they saw the anger and that gleeming sword, that only Evergreen could make sing a song of destruction, pointed right at them.
Evergreen hears Phalon moan and sees that she is returning from the place in time their souls met. Evergreen wonders, have they been in Illusia? They would have to talk of this some night over mead at Cyrene's.
Phalon was struggling to stand. Evergreen lend over offering her forearm for support. Phalon clasp on and was raised from the ground. They both knew that something of importance had occurred this day. And an occurrence of great importance and confusion it certainly was.
Evergreen could see the look of disbelief and fear on the faces of her Sisters, especially Little Gabby.
"WHERE is XWPfan and leara?"
Little Gabby regaining her composure started to step forward, but was stopped by the look on Evergreen's face.
"They are gone." XWPfan branded an 'X' on leara, they fought again and leara overpowered xwpfan."
"She left right before XWPfan was set free. Now, they both are gone."
Evergreen stared at those before her. The did not know, they could not know, leara is my sister.
Phalon gently touches Evergreen's arm
"Put the sword down EG. There has been enough harm in this place today. These are not your enemies. They are your friends and so am I. I have been within you and I know the conflict that lives in your soul. You are feeling the guilt in not protecting Puella the day of the Roman raid of your village.
You let the soldiers believe that she was your sister to protect the sister you loved. When you had heard from a passing traveler that Justinian had issued a degree of a great reward for finding his missing daughter, you placed on Puella the necklace with Justinian's insignia. You wanted to insure that Puella would be mistaken for leara.
Evergreen looked at Puella and saw both relief and hatred. Relief that she was not of Roman descent and was truly a sister of the Amazons. Hatred radiated from Puella's eyes with disbelief that Evergreen had betrayed her to the Romans.
Evergreen had committed a great wrong to this woman and an even greater wrong to leara. Evergreen had convinced their mother, Daria, to send leara away to be raised and guided by Madula. Madula could take that child of Rome and bestow on her the one true caste that could wash away the blood coursing threw her veins that she so despised. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ EvergreenLM - 01:56am May 31, 2002 ET (#233 of 330) "To Conquer Others is to Know Power...to Conquer Yourself is to Know the Way"
"Oh What a Tangled Web We Weave"... contiued
Evergreen took every word spoken by Phalon like a direct blow the body. There was no denying the truth.
Evergreen lowered her sword. quietly he walked over to Little Gabby, placed a hand on her shoulder, and looked at her with such great caring. Evergreen strapped on the sheath to her sword, slid it down into its home, and placed her sais back in the sides of her boots.
"Puella, another day and another time we will speak of this. I swear on my honor as an Amazon that from this day forward I will be your protector."
Evergreen, turned to Phalon. "Thank you for being with me and helping me find my way back."
"Where is Whisperer?" Evergreen says looking at the horses hobbled nearby.
"Here, EG, here is Whisperer. You are going after my mother aren't you?" Little Gabby stumbles on the words as she hands the reins to Evergreen.
"Yes, I am. I need my friend."
Scroll of the Dumb Scout 8 Day 2 With our load lightened and adding the auxiliary sails we are speeding ahead nicely. This afternoon we passed our landing site and are going to continue up the coast until we can find a suitable landing site at least after midnight. We beached and unloaded the ships then settled in for a rest.
Day 3 Dawn finds us quickly and signals the start back to work for us. We divide into groups to work more effectively. The beach and forest are set with traps for our coming guests. By noon we are on our way to being finished, most of the pits are dug and covered. It is decided that a small group will remain to continue trapping and then stand guard as our first line of defense.
We move out heading for the first landing site. We move as fast as possible but, it takes us until evening to make camp. We find that Leara has supposed to have been here, there is a scroll with her signature and some weapons are missing. The debate rages over the scroll we have found and what to do about it.
The Scroll reads:
My friends both Old and New,
You have arrived back here to our rally point your mission accomplished. It is an honor to have an oath sworn in your name and crowned by its being fulfilled. You are my hero’s in that you have risked your lives liberty and future in my behalf. I am proud to have known you and fought beside you but, it is time for you to consider your oath to me complete and return to civilization. I have decided to travel north to the land of my people and Madula.
Your last order from me is: You are to board the ship and return to your homes or the Amusement Center. Assist the disadvantaged! Live life! Appreciate love! and Prosper!! ------ Leara

Scroll of the Dumb Scout 9
I stand to propose a solution and Kierna speaks for me.
This is my solution, we will divide in to two groups the believers who will stay here for two days while the rest of us search for answers. At the end of two days you who stay here will set sail no matter what following the orders in the Scroll.
There is no way to authenticate these orders. Leara has not been the same since the deaths of Madula and Theos as well as she trust the Amazons who have given us nothing but death and destruction. We will continue to follow her order not to harm any Amazons but, I do not have to like or trust them.
I want to know that I have fulfilled my oath to smite the Romans. Many of you have been slaves with have nothing to take home so I propose we at least plunder the Romans of valuable things. Not to mention these holes in my arm cry out for some Roman blood.
Lastly let me finish by saying this I will follow Leara no matter where she goes even into the depths of Tartarus and beyond. She is my friend; I owe her my life and allegiance. I can not leave or rest until I am certain she is safe and there are no breathing Romans, save the one left to tell the tale.
I am leaving to find Leara. Any who wish to join me may. The rest of you I will see later either here or the other side.
I and those who chose to follow me immediately began our departure for the Roman camp. I hope we will not be too late. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ leara - 09:19am Jun 3, 2002 ET (#236 of 330)
TAD 11 Phase Two LAST Call
This is to be my last scroll. It is not the ending I had hoped for but, then my whole life has been unexpected. Not all stories after all are fairy tales with happy endings and so mine goes the way of the tragedy. This scroll contains part explanation and part instruction as well as my last request.
To The Amazon Nation,
I was Leara. I came to this place seeking to honor a sworn oath to the Amazon Queen Madula. I was to return Puella to her people, exact justice from Romans for them and, to scatter Madula’s ashes in the sacred place in the forest.
As I am now dead I entrust the responsibility to finish her last request and the distribution of my belongings to The Queen.
Madula’s sword and ceremonial dagger both are silver and said to have been given by Artemis herself. Her necklace and something called ‘right of caste’ that goes with it. I do not understand what it is or how it works. These belong here among the Amazons as they are the last treasures of her tribe.
Tactis, is a fine white stallion liberated from the personal stables of Caesar. Madula reveled in riding him, the irony of sitting atop and controlling the great Roman beast always brought out a smile to her face. Xwpfan, I saw the look you gave him so I am leaving you charge of him but you must treat him better then my wolf.
The last thing I own of value is my personal sword. It is one of a kind weapon. It was the sacred sword of the first family I remember. The legend states that it was crafted by Hephaetus and given as a gift in exchange for their protection of the forest and help in his labors. This should be given to Puella as she must hold high value because the cost to return her home has been great, she has endured long at Roman hands and there is an unmatched potential for greatness in her.
As my last request I ask that you allow the remnants of my Army to pass safely home. They were here only to assist me in fulfilling my oath to Madula. *Leara
I use my bedroll to conceal the scroll and Madula’s things leaving it on Tactis. I replace my sword under the saddle and place an inky X on his hind quarter. I lead him out to graze surely some Amazon will find him and care for him. Loaded up with weapons myself I begin my journey to the east side of the encampment. There I find just as my Scout described a small pile of stones and a lone tree. I crawl down there and make myself comfortable. There is nothing left but to wait for the monster to rise up from deep inside me. I usually fight it because when it takes over there is nothing left in my wake but destruction and death. Today when it comes I will embrace it and let my instincts be my guide.

Still, Still Waiting
The hours passed in the shady wood and Zena, always (well almost always) obedient to the Queen sat with her warriors and waited. They could not see each other for they were well hidden but relied rather on the sense of another that comes from living in community. She could feel the young warriors growing impatience to begin the battle. "Stay still, young ones" Zena thought, "if there is no signal, there is a reason." Once she thought she heard a call of a single Amazon but there was no response or repeat of the bird sound.
Then, Zena heard the heavy tramp of men's boots very close to their hiding place. She scarcely drew breath as the soldiers shuffled around in the bush, their metal parts of their helmets catching the sun through the trees. "Flavius, here, cut this one. We can use both the limbs and the trunk." The soldiers levelled the tree easily , slicing it up and dragging it away in no time and nearly crushing Vasca who was crouched nearby. Brave Vasca never moved. Although Zena could not speak Latin and did not understand what was said she could read the signs of their actions, the Romans were building crosses. Again.

Lost and Found
After Evergreen rode off on Whisperer, Puella started gathering her things about camp and methodically loading them on her horse. Her face was a mix of emotions. Now she finally knew the truth of who she was, but wasn't sure if she was better off not knowing. She hated Evergreen this moment. What would her life have been like if Evergreen had not put the necklace on her that fateful day so long ago that changed her life forever?
"I am going to join my sisters. I am going to fight with them to perserve the Amazon sisterhood, a sisterhood I have been denied knowing for as long as I can remember. I if I am killed in battle, at least it will be beside them, and I will die knowing where I belong."
"I have something that belongs to you", Phalon stated, pulling the necklace from her pouch and extending her hand towards Puella.
"That thing", Puella hissed. "I hate that thing and all it represents. It was his and his family's. Because of it I was taken away from my family and have spent my entire life as a Roman slave." Puella turned her back towards Phalon and started to walk away.
Phalon gently grabbed Puella's arm and turned her so that they were face to face. "Evergreen was only doing what she had to to protect her sister", Phalon said softly. "She wronged you, yes, but she was young at the time, and did not think of the consequences it would have on you. She only thought of the sister she loved. As for the necklace, Justinian adopted it's talisman as his insigna, but it was pilfered. Stolen as the plunder of one of his raids. That necklace has great powers and I believe it is yours. YOU were meant to wear it. The Fates have destined it so."
Puella grabbed the necklace from Phalon's hand. She held it up by it's silver chain and spat on the bull's emerald stone. Then she flung back her arm and heaved it as hard as she could into the surrounding forest. "That is what I think of Justinian's precious talisman", she spat.
Then turning again to Phalon she added, "And just what are you doing here, Phalon? You are not Amazon. Have you not done enough damage here? Why don't you go back to wherever it is you come from and leave us. We do not need you here." And with that, she leapt on her horse and rode out of camp.
"Ah, but you do need me", Phalon thought, "you just do not know it yet." She lifted her arm up towards and sky, hand held open, then clenched it into a fist. She brought her hand back down in front of her and slowly opened it. In her palm, emitting it's familar green glow, was the emerald and silver necklace. Puella's necklace.
Little Gabbyfan stared in awe and disbelief. "But I saw her throw it", she stammered. "How did you....?"
"It was not ME", Phalon calmly answered, holding up the necklace by it's chain. "It's purpose has not yet been fulfilled." "Come on little one, we've got to get you back to Zena. You may be about to see some very ugly things. Hideous things that may change you forever. Battle is not all about heroics. Until we find Zena, you stay close by my side."
She got on Agapanthus, and extended her hand to help Gabbyfan up behind her. As they left in the direction Puella had taken, Phalon could not keep her thoughts from turning towards her vision of the carnage on the battlefield, the sun shining on a jewel encrusted Amazon sword, and the Amazon that lay fallen beneath it. And her heart filled with dread. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ xwpfan - 03:10pm Jun 3, 2002 ET (#239 of 330)
Dangerous Ground
Stay. I mouthed as I pointedly waved at the ground. Solaria immediately crouched down. There was the sound of heavy boots crunching in the underbrush.. there was no mistakening the sound. Romans.
I crept a little further on the ground to see what the Romans were up to. As I scanned the area I saw the shadow of a top of a tree starting to sway.. it was the unmistakable sway of a tree being fell.
I ran back to my postion. I heard the eerie sound of branches snapping and the tree trunk cracking and giving way with a tremendous THUD.I did not have to see the tree actually fall to know that it was gone. I felt the vibrations of it's impact all around me.
I looked around, I could not see where it had landed, but only where it had once stood .I knew by the way we were dispersed there was a chance one of my sisters may have been caught in it's path .I hoped and I prayed to Artmeis that I was wrong.
I looked back Solaria had not moved. Solaria's eye's were huge, and she was barely able to ask the question the desperately wanted answered."It's..Romans...Isn't it?"
In many ways Solaria reminded me of a frightened animal... unsure of itself, but it would kill if provoked or to protect it's loved ones.
I looked her square in the eye and calmly said " Yes Solaria, it is the Romans, and it looks like their building crosses again. I think they know we are here .I don't think we need to go any further. As it is this place very dangerous. Are you sure you want to be here here right now.
Solaria rose up to her full stature and said" I am Not afraid! My place is with you. I want to kill these Roman dogs as much as you do."
There was more rustling in the trees,it was a sound of a horse in full gallop almost a quick angered step but it wasn't heavy like the sounds the Roman horses made. I listened to the sounds and smelled the air but I still couldn't be sure whether it was friend or foe approaching.
I signaled Solaria to get down and to hush. solaria nodded and I whispered," Solaria, someone is approaching. Right now, what I need for you to do is to climb up to the highest branch of that tree and stay there. I need someone with a better vantage point to watch over the Romans. By the way Solaria, I never thought you were afraid." Solaria smiled and began to climb.
With that I turned my attentions back to the noises, they were drawing near, suddenly a horse whisked by me.. .I tackled the rider to keep our position secret from the Romans.
To my shock Puella tumbled to the ground. Puella began dispersing curses and epithets like a sailor. Puella sat there angered and dirtied .I couldn't help but laugh as rolled away out of her way.
Unfortunately, Puella never saw that it was me who tackled her,she must have thought that she had been attacked by a Roman.
Puella was furious, turned with her eyes blazing in anger as she cried out "I'll kill you!I'll kill all of you! She swung her sword up over her head, ready to strike...
Solaria from high up in the tree top,did not know what to do. Solaria could not make out who the stranger was, all she could see was a shinning sword raised to Kill, with only her friend and mentor Xwpfan in sight as the possible target.
Solaria knew she couldn't warn her friend for fear of alerting the Romans. Solaria froze for just a second and a single tear rolled down her cheek as she leapt into the air, in hopes of landing on the stranger and wrestling the sword away from the stranger...

Puella in search of her sisters
Riding on Amica, my words echo in my ears. ‘I am going to join my sisters. I am going to fight with them to preserve the Amazon sisterhood, a sisterhood I have been denied knowing for as long as I can remember. I if I am killed in battle, at least it will be beside them, and I will die knowing where I belong.’
As the wind blew through my hair I remember the last conversation I had with Phalon, when she tried to give me the necklace back. “That thing,” I hissed. "Because of it I was taken away from my family and have spent my entire life as a Roman slave." I turned my back towards Phalon and started to walk away. Phalon gently grabbed my arm and turned me so that we were face to face. "Evergreen was only doing what she had to protect her sister", Phalon said softly. "She wronged you, yes, but she was young at the time, and did not think of the consequences it would have on you. She only thought of the sister she loved. As for the necklace, Justinian adopted its talisman as his insignia, but it was pilfered. Stolen as the plunder of one of his raids. That necklace has great powers and I believe it is yours. YOU were meant to wear it. The Fates have destined it so." I grabbed the necklace I once loved, out of Phalon’s hand. “This is what I think of the fates!” Throwing it as hard as I could into the forest.
The eyes of Evergreen flash in my memory, then the word she spoke ring through my head. "Puella, another day and another time we will speak of this. I swear on my honor as an Amazon that from this day forward I will be your protector." Riding Amica as fast as she could go, I scream. “ I am no longer the Roman slave girl. I must prove that to the Amazons. I must prove that to myself.”
Amica continues to race as I close in on the Roman camp. Suddenly, someone tackled me off of her, I roll to the ground. “Roman scum!” I muttered, furiously. I turned with my eyes blazing in anger and cried out "I'll kill you! I'll kill all of you!” I swung my sword up over my head, ready to strike. Looking into the face of my attacker and I see a friend, Xwpfan. A smile crossed my face. Leaning down, towards her ear I whisper, “We must stop meeting like this. Though I do like the looks of you in this position.” As I began to laugh, I was suddenly attacked from overhead. Feeling the weight of a mite creature on my back, arms wrapped around my neck, I knew it was Solaria, the girl who left with Xwpfan. I dropped my sword, so not to hurt her. She tried with all her might to hold on, but when I stood, I was able to reach up and grab the back of her tunic. I flipped her over my head onto the ground by Xwpfan. I brought my finger to my mouth, “Shhh.” The sound of Roman’s not far from here got my attention. Chopping down another tree. Obviously they were building crosses. I looked at Xwpfan and Solaria as we all knelt down. “So what are we waiting for Xwpfan, an invitation?” ------------------------------------------------------------------------ EvergreenLM - 07:20pm Jun 3, 2002 ET (#241 of 330) "To Conquer Others is to Know Power...to Conquer Yourself is to Know the Way"
Finding Zena
Evergreen had a lot to think about as she guided Whisperer through the forest. Being alone with only her thoughts could prove both a blessing and a curse. Her Sisters may view her as aloof and detached but Evergreen knew that being a part of the Amazon Nation was what her very life was all about.
Being apart of her tribe gave a great sense of pride and belonging. She just thought better when alone and surrounded by nature. The sounds and smells of the forest, the sight of the morning and evening skies, the tumbling waters of the river, filled her with a sense of belonging to something greater than her earthly existence.
Just what had happened this day? Such a spiritual journey has led her to this place and time. Truth can be lies, and lies can be truth. Discerning the difference can be tricky. Discerning incorrectly could be fatal.
Evergreen worried about Zena. She thought about where was she and was she safe. They had not spoken since the day of the “execution”. Evergreen did not yet know what to think of that. Evergreen knew that if Zena had missed her mark by one blink of the eye, Whisperer would be carrying an empty saddle through the forest.
Just where was leara? Phalon’s passing of the knowledge of the events gave a horrible picture of torture that Evergreen could not yet bring to terms. This was not in the character of XWPfan to do such a thing. Such anger must issue from a deep well.
So many things, fragments to a larger whole, rumbled around in Evergreen’s thoughts. It was good to be back riding Whisperer. This faithful companion had seen it all, but never passes judgement as the human species so quickly rushes in to do.
Evergreen listened to the creak of the saddle, smelled the scent of horse and leather as they slowly moved through the forest floor. With a quick jerk to the reins, Evergreen brought Whisperer to a halt. Without seeing, Evergreen knew that she had ridden directly into a small clearing with many eyes hiding in the nearby scrub.
An arrow came flashing by with a “Swooosh” followed by a “thunnggg” into a large pine missing Evergreen's head by a breath. Green and gold feathers flagged out from the end of the arrow. Zena! Finding Zena... continued
“Are you STILL determined to tear more holes in my favorite tunic or do you really mean to send me to the Elysian Fields ahead of you?
Evergreen quickly swung off Whisperer and ran towards the direction of the flight of arrow. Zena stepped out of the scrub, dropped her bow and embraced Evergreen.
“Hello old friend.” They lingered in the embrace one not wanting to let the other go.
Evergreen softly whispered, “If I let you go, I am afraid that this will have been one of Phalon’s spiritual walks, and when I open my eyes, you will not be there.”
Zena pushed Evergreen back and held her at arms length,“Open your eyes, Evergreen, I AM here. Welcome home. You are just in time, the Romans are building crosses.”

zena - 10:05pm Jun 3, 2002 ET (#243 of 330) Kindred Spirits Zena heard a strange call from the West and knew someone had arrived on that flank. "Good", she mused, "some ally is there." Suddenly she sensed movement and from her quiet post she saw Solaria climb a nearby tree almost to the position of the archers. The archers looked down astonished but silent at the young Amazon below them. Solaria, named because her fair hair and skin had shown like the sun from the moment of her birth. Her disposition matched her shining appearance and everyone in the tribe loved her optimism. Zena had trained her herself in the sword and Xwpfan had mentored her in the art of battle. She was well prepared but inexperienced. Zena wondered where Xwpfan had gone off to if Solaria was out here running wild. And then a totally unexpected thing happened, Solaria launched herself from the branch dropping from a goodly height on to someone or thing in the bushes. The archers above dropped their jaws as one woman. "By the gods", Zena thought, "has everyone lost their wits? The Romans are a rod away, hammering and sawing and we're bashing about in the bushes! Thank Artemis they are as dull as they are arrogant. They will probably not even see what an Amazon would consider a gladiator match right in front of them." Zena rose slowly and fluidly to her feet and saw Puella and Xwpfan tusseling with poor Solaria. "PUELLA!" Zena groaned silently inside. "What on earth is that woman doing here? She's supposed to be on a mission to redirect Caesar." Just then she heard Whisperer headed straight for the soldiers who were cutting the trees. "What next? Hannibal and his elephants? " With blinding speed she nocked an arrow and let it fly past Evergreen's head to stop her. Once again the Romans took no notice of the drama around them. Evergreen quickly swung off Whisperer and ran towards the direction of the flight of arrow. Zena stepped out of the scrub, dropped her bow and embraced Evergreen. “Hello old friend.” They lingered in the embrace one not wanting to let the other go. Evergreen softly whispered, “If I let you go, I am afraid that this will have been one of Phalon’s spiritual walks, and when I open my eyes, you will not be there.” Zena pushed Evergreen back and held her at arms length,“Open your eyes, Evergreen, I AM here. I have no intention of disappearing. Welcome home. You are just in time, the Romans are building crosses.” She gave Whisperer the signal to go back down the path and pulled Evergreen into the space she had occupied for so many hours. "Before I explain the plan, I have to tell you how sorry I am about the "execution", AND your shirt. Please forgive me, don't hate me, don't leave me again. It was all I could think of to do to save you. I'm not even sure how I'll explain it to the Queen. Maybe we could go live in Thrace. Wait a minute!! If you're here, where's Phalon and Little Gabby? I told them to keep you quiet. You took off on them didn't you? See, this is what I mean, you never go along with the plan when it's my............." Evergreen clapped a hand over Zena's mouth and said, "Listen." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ girlpower - 02:59am Jun 4, 2002 ET (#247 of 330) Courage is not the absence of fear..but the strength to conquer it. Puella carries out Xwpfan's plan “To A Strong Amazon Nation!” Were my last words spoken to a friend, a sister, Xwpfan. Puella slung over Amica, bruised and battered, being sent into the enemies camp as a diversion. While my body was bruised and weary, my mind was ever alert. Xwpfan’s plan will work. Once the Romans see that I am Leicester’s personal slave, I will be tended to. He is infamous on the battlefield. Any troop would walk through fire for a chance to get his troop with theirs. His troop is always well armed, especially catapults. He needs large weapons to make himself feel more powerful. He has a weakness for slaves. He can’t resist the urge to dominate and conquer others, bending them to his will. He will be near the villages, where he can capture the most people. Which means he will not be here where the battle is about to be raged. The thought of Leicester makes my blood run cold. Amica slowed as she saw the Roman camp. I whispered, “Go on my friend, we will be fine.” I reach up and feel for the emblem scarred into my right shoulder blade. It is exposed. Then I relax my muscles the best I can, so I will appear to be unconscious. Amica’s gait was slow and deliberate as we entered the camp. Roman’s surround us, I let out a groan to show them I was still alive. It sounds like there are 10 men. Their feet shuffle and armor clangs. Then the sound of acknowledgement, someone recognized my insignia. “Get her down from there and to the healer’s tent,” a soldier yelled. Two men walked over and grabbed my arms and shoulders and drug me off of my horse. All I could think was please stay safe, my friend. Inside the healer’s tent I was laid on the ground. A young soldier ran to my side, with a wet cloth and began to clean my wounds. As he washed the dried blood from my face he gasped, “who did this to you Puella?” Hearing my name I tensed. Looking at his face I see Lares. Coughing and gasping for breath, “The same person that kidnapped Senator Justinian,” was my reply. His eyes grew wide. “I delivered that parchment and the ring to Caesar himself. He is bringing his troops together to fight, Pompey.” We are his reinforcements, due to travel to the battle site when word is sent through carrier pigeon. How is Gabbyfan?” This poor boy is too trusting. I don’t want to see him hurt here. “Since you did what I asked of you, I have another mission, it is of dire importance. I need you to go north and find my master Leicester.” I pulled myself up onto my forearms, “He is missing me and will surely send his troop and arms here to you, once he knows I am here. Do you have an inkwell, a quill and some parchment paper?” He ran to the back of the tent and searched for the items I requested. “Here, I’ve found some.” He said and rushed over to my side. “I can’t write with these injuries, I need you to scribe for me.” He took the parchment and began to write my every word. ‘Leicester: Pompey killed Justinian. Caesar is on his way to attack Pompey in the North. Reinforcements are to the South. Puella Virium’ “Now use the quill to cover my insignia with ink. Press the parchment to the ink stained insignia.” With the parchment in hand I sent Lares on his mission. Sitting alone in the healer’s tent. Knowing Leicester the way I do, he will come here to avoid the major battle. With him he will bring his weapons, which the Amazon's can easily take. May every Amazon have a sword to yield. Now to find that weapon’s stockpile…

TAD 12 Here we go again...
My patience is wearing thin for this Puella after all the trouble I have gone through to get her back home she chooses to ride in to the camp of the Romans. A smile creeps across my face as I think about how every time I think that I am finished there is one more thing to do and so I guess I am never fated to die. I must make sure that she survives this battle and lives to tell the tale. I will have to go down into this Camp as my Underground Gladiator character which will be difficult with out my Scout. I have been in tougher places before. I need a new shirt and these Roman’s will do nicely right here in front of my position. I toss a rock and hit the one in the head they are coming my way time to get some satisfaction. I wait until they are close and then spring into action a left then a right a piece not bad. I drag them behind the rocks and take their clothes.
Now for my steed a long whistle brings him on his way. I head up the slope trying to hurry and not be detected either. At the crest I am reunited with not only Tactis but the Scout and those with her. I explain my plan to get Puella out of the camp or at least to save her life. The rest are to creep down and take my former position, Kierna is to return and bring the rest of the camp here to reinforce our position.
The Scout and I ride down into the Roman camp full gallop. I know that they will seem a bit suspicious but I still have the Romans crest used by Madula to move freely at times around the world.
We enter the camp and are met by about ten of the guards. “Where is the commander?” I ask with an authoritative voice. “Who are you?” scowls one of the guards.
The monster has awakened and my blood is boiling at this ingrates insulting question. I reach under the saddle and in one swift sweeping motion pull my sword from its hiding place and take it to the throat of the speaker. “I will say this only once so pay attention, I am Leara of Gaul and have arrived to watch the slaughter and to capture some new slaves at the invitation of Leicester. This here is The Mighty Mute I did that myself. Now one last time who is in charge?”
“Leicester’s personal slave is here in the healer’s tent. I think the Commander is there as well.”he answers. They backed away and let us pass to the tent. I swing down from Tactis, sword still in hand I used it to open the tent flap. There Puella sat she was getting up to leave and pretended to faint falling down back on the ground hen we arrived inside the tent. Scout stands guard at the tent entrance. “What are you doing back here in this camp have you lost your mind?” I ask her in an irritated low voice. I touch her arm and there is a wince of pain in her face. “Who has done this to you? They will pay a thousand times your pain when I catch them.”
Puella seems surprised by the concern I am showing for her and there is a hint of fear there as well. “It is not what you think. I am a diversion to take out the cache of weapons. Xwpfan is coming I am going to meet her at the tent.” she cautiously says.
“Very well, but how do you plan on getting out of the camp after the destruction? They might want you to be the first one on the crosses they are building. Tell me which tent is the one and I will meet Xwpfan. I will personally take care of this matter and see that she gets out of the camp alright. I can not let you die it is my sworn oath that you live and prosper among the Amazons your people.” I explain my reasons to her. "To Conquer Others is to Know Power...to Conquer Yourself is to Know the Way"
Trapped in a Roman Liar
You took off on them didn't you? See, this is what I mean, you never go along with the plan when it's my............." Evergreen clapped a hand over Zena's mouth and said, "Listen."
“There will plenty of time to discuss the fact that I am most obstinate to a fault. So much has happened in your absence. I have decided that the time for deceit is past and will tell you what I should have told you long before this time. Leara is my sister. Puella is one of us and I have done her a great wrong.”
Zena recoiled backwards with a look of disbelief and confusion. “How could you withhold that from me? I don’t understand. We have been friends for such a long time. I just don’t understand.”
Evergreen put both hands on Zena’s shoulders.
“This is more than we have time to talk about for the moment. I am asking you, no, I am begging you, to please trust me. Trust me that I did not intend to hurt you. It was a lie by omission and only to protect you. I am asking you to accept the fact that I felt it was for the best.”
Zena’s eyes met Evergreen’s. A long silence passed between them without either one turning from their focus.
Zena finally spoke, “Alright, for now, alright. You trusted me with your life and that counts for something.” Zena looked passed Evergreen as if searching for someone.
Evergreen knew just who the ‘someone’ was. “Zena, I left Little Gabby behind with Phalon. Little Dog is with her. I did not want to bring her this close to the Roman settlement. I am glad I did leave her considering what you are telling me about Romans and cross building.”
With a flash as fast as Zeus’ thunderbolts, Evergreen pulls Zena flat to the ground. She whispers, “Be quite, there are four soldiers walking directly towards us.” Evergreen keeps her hand on top of Zena’s back not allowing her to rise up. Zena with mouth to the ground, hisses, “I want WAR!

“Well, well, look at what we have here.” Evergreen looks behind her. A soldier stands above them with sword drawn. As he lifts it holding the hilt in both hands preparing to serve a fatal blow to Evergreen’s back, a voice shouts,
“STOP! Do you not recognize who that it is?”
“Seize them both and take them back to camp. If a hair on that one’s head is harmed, your life is forfeit.” Do you understand THAT?”
“Yes sir! Clearly I understand.” The soldier lowers his sword and both women are grabbed up and pushed hard. Zena stumbles, and as she falls, the soldier laughs and kicks her to the ground. Evergreen moved so quickly, the soldier did not see the Sai until it was plunged into his chest. He slumps to the ground clutching the Sai as his life bleeds out.
“You filth of Rome, you will NEVER touch her again!” At that moment a blow is delivered to Evergreen’s head that sends her to her knees. She refuses to give in to the impending darkness.
“Get up Amazon, both of you, stand up.” Zena and Evergreen rise defiantly. “Tie their hands behind their backs.”
A foul smelling breath Roman is nose to nose in Evergreen’s face. With a deep guttural tone, he slowly says, “If you even THINK about attacking another soldier, I will kill your friend.”
But before the hands are bound, Evergreen and Zena exchange a closed fist to the chest signaling “To A Strong Amazon Nation.” Then, with their arms tied tightly behind them, they are thrown up on their horses and led away to an uncertain fate.

Leara of Gaul
I crept up the side of the camp never taking my eyes of Puella, I felt my body go limp with relief as I heard them shout to take her to the healer's tent. I watched as the guards took her away. I was on my knees about crawl over to to the stockpile of weapons when I heard a familiar voice call out,
" Where is the commander?"
"The voice set my teeth on edge,my stomach churned violently,icy chills went up and down my spine .. it was the all too familiar voice of trouble... blood rushed to my face,veins bulged as I heard her say;
“I will say this only once so pay attention, I am Leara of Gaul and have arrived to watch the slaughter and to capture some new slaves at the invitation of Leicester. This here is The Mighty Mute I did that myself. Now one last time who is in charge?"
" I am Leara of Gaul." The words echoed in my head, I was filled with an all consuming rage, rage unlike I have never known.I wanted to run and slaughter right where she stood, but she was in the midst of a Roman camp declaring herself a Roman with her words and insignia .
I watched her with venomous hatred. I saw her go into the healer's tent, at that moment I felt all the blood drain from my body. I swore to the Gods if anything happened to Puella there would not be enough torment on earth for me to give Leara.
I grew anxious my friend Puella would be helpless in there.Puella would be up against the woman I disliked and distrusted the most. From day one there had been bad blood between us even though it was through her Puella's identity had been confirmed. Not trusting Leara, I knew I had to rescue Puella from Leara.
I crept beside the tent and I heard Leara question Puella. I winced as I heard Puella tell her about the stockpile of weapons.
Leara appeared way too anxious to help. I felt assured that she was intent on betraying our plan to destroy the weapons.
I silently waited for Leara to leave the healer's tent. Finally she left and I crawled in from a loose flap in the back . When I entered the tent I could see by the light of the lantern, the badly bruised body of my friend, tears filled my eyes.
I gently whispered, "I got to get you out of here, now that Leara knows our plan you are not safe."
Puella opened her eyes and touched my arm, "No, we can't leave here without destroying those weapons, our sisters are depending on us."
I removed my bow and my quiver of arrows and said "I am not leaving you here, you're coming with me. I hoisted her over my shoulders.
Puella said, "Put me down ! I am able to walk! Really I am fine! I'm an Amazon remember?!"
Once again I just ignored her and I picked up my bow and arrows and said" Hang on to my neck and don't let go."
It was tough traversing through the back of the camp with Puella on my back, but I Could Not, No I Would not leave her there. Finally about 75 yards from the stockpile I stopped to catch my breath.. As I gasping for breath I saw Leara's figure race across to the weapons stockpile.
I quickly put my bow and arrows down and then I carefully placed Puella on the ground next to me and said " I'll be right back. I ran back to the healer's tent and grabbed the lantern. I took the blanket that Puella had been wrapped in and draped it over the lantern as to block it from giving off light. I ran back to Puella and told her to hold the lantern til I was ready.
I picked up my bow and my quiver of arrows, I ripped a strip off the blanket, dipped the rag in oil from the lamp and then wrapped it around the lower shaft of the arrows and then said to Puella,"Now!" and she pulled back the blanket and I lit the rag with the flame from the lantern. I pulled back the bow and let it fly. WHOOSH! It hit the tent squarely in the middle.
"Again!" I yelled
Whoosh! The arrow sailed right into the back side of the tent. The tent and it's contents were a blaze!
Puella smiled and said" Someday, you'll have to teach me how to do that."

I smiled and said," Do what? That! That was a lucky shot. Let's get out of here while their busy."
Dozens of Roman soldiers were running to the tent trying to douse the flames and save the weaponry.
I couldn't help but smile as I thought of Leara having to explain her presence in the weapons tent, moments before it caught fire.
I got us to a safe place and watched from our vantage point as the guards beretted Leara. With each questions, we heard her voice get angrier and more arrogant with each passing question.
I laughed when I heard the murmured awe from the soliders. They had torn off her tunic and the newly branded X had been exposed.
I heard one of the guards ask," Who did this to you?"
I felt my body straighten up with pride as she said, "One of those good for nothing Amazons did that to me!"
With that, one of the Guards said, "Amazons are not usually this brutal, I do not believe she set the tent ablaze,if the Amazons hate her enough to brand her she must truly be a Roman!"
I couldn't believe my ears! She was escaping with her life yet again! I nudged Puella and said, Let's get out of here!"
We were just about out of camp when a booming voice announced" Looks like we got a couple Amazons to try out our cross building skills on!"
Puella and I looked in time to see Zena and Evergreen riding on their own horses with their arms tied behind them.
Puella looked at me searchingly, I told her" We can't leave them here."
Puella replied, "I would never think of it, but how can we rescue them now?"
We both answered at the same time for different reasons "Leara." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ gabbyfan4ever - 12:54am Jun 5, 2002 ET (#253 of 330)
Phalon and Little Gabbyfan sat on the horse in silence listening to the sound of trees crashing to the ground. But there was another sound they couldn't yet identify. Gabbyfan had little dog on her lap and pet him to keep him calm and quiet, as well as calm her nerves.
In a moment gabbyfan knew what the noise they were hearing was. Voices. The little amazon listened with her whole body, trying to recognize a voice. Before Phalon knew what was happening, little gabbyfan had jumped off the horse and ran to the bushes ahead with little dog following at her heels.
Phalon came up behind her and asked "What in tartarus do you think you're doing!?" The only reply she got from gabbyfan was one word spoken in a loud whisper. "Mom"
Little gabbyfan was staring in horror at the sight of her mother and Evergreen captured by Roman's. It was all Phalon could do to keep the little Amazon from running straight into the middle of the Romans to take them all on. The more experienced Amazon knew that there was no chance the two of them could get Evergreen and Phalon out alone.
Phalon told little gabby "We've got to go find QS and the others, we can't get them out alone."
Little Gabbyfan only replied "I can't leave her again Phalon" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Joxcenia - 01:52am Jun 5, 2002 ET (#254 of 330) I Came... I Saw... I Went Home! lol
Patience Is A Virtue... That Carries A Lot Of Wait!
Joxcenia sat in the treetop, waiting to see if the Queen was going to seek her out or give out a call so that she could locate her. All was not quiet in this part of the woods, but unfortunately it wasn't any Amazon calls alerting her of their presence. Trees were falling... and at a rapid rate. Fortunately Joxcenia had stayed back a ways from the Roman camp, so her tree should be safe from the axe.
This however, left her with no view of the Roman camp. She didn't want to risk being captured by the Romans, nor did she want to get in the middle of the battle before she could tell the Queen of her vision. If anything happened to her, the tribe wouldn't know about the Greek Fire or to seek out the one among them who could expose the location of all the Roman weapons, not until they returned to the caves and spoke with Sue.
After quite some time had passed, Joxie let out another call. This would be the last sound she would make; for fear that the Romans might pick up on the different sounds and realize it was human and not animal.

TAD 13 Assination backfires
Nothing is ever simple. I must hurry to get to the stock pile of weapons and get Xwpfan out of here these dogs are itching to try out their cross building skills on anyone. I will go on an inspection of the camp as anyone of my supposed stature is entitled to. Ah, at last the weapons tent, I enter and begin to inspect the flammability of the tent when Woosh! An arrow comes buzzing in to the tent wall that can only mean one thing and it is not good. Xwpfan has decided to try and end my life and the Roman cache of weapons all at once. This is simply unacceptable.
I exit the tent and call out for water after knocking over the lanterns inside the tent. It should be obvious that the fire was set by the arrows and none will suspect the help and speed that the fire got from me. There is a reason I try and avoid these smelly dogs the fact they have no reasoning ability among them. They actually think I did this when the arrows are still flaming on the side of the tent. They tore my tunic to reveal the X branded into my right shoulder blade. They begin to back off in fear because they have lifted their hand against a Roman Citizen an offence punishable by law.
This is the first time I come to realize that what had happened before was not the mistake I had thought it to be. I still do not fully grasp why all these things keep happening. It amazes me that the Romans do not see my contempt for them. I guess, after years of practice in becoming another person to play a part, to achieve a goal, it is difficult for me to see me any more, much less these stupid beasts to see me.
I take my leave and send for a new tunic a clean one from their stock. I know, I am asking the impossible but I must ask I cannot be expected to parade around in this filthy rag any longer than necessary. The commander offers me his tent and so I accept the center tent in the camp the perfect place to run their demise from. I send Mighty Mute to bring our horses to my new tent. There is nothing like the feel of Egyptian cotton on the skin, the new tunic feels good it has been several days since I’ve had the chance to clean up properly there is no point in wasting the opportunity.
I pull the bed roll from Tactis and hide it inside our new quarters. I am off to find Puella she should be in our company and rest on a cot not the ground. My scout will take the opportunity to wander about collecting details to launch the next phase of the attack.
There was a great commotion in the camp as the Roman cross detachment were bringing in two Amazons. They were cheering and wanting to put them on crosses. It was to my surprise the badly injured Amazon I left when I tied Xwpfan spread like an X and one I had never seen before.
“Good I see you have found me some decent company and an Amazon for my collection of slaves.” I say to the one leading them into camp.
“These are for the crosses!” the commander shouts in defiance.

TAD 14 The Emenies Within
“I do not think that you will be crucifying any Amazon for which Leicester can gain profit. Now bring then to my tent for my amusement and bring Puella there as well she my find some delight in their unfortunate circumstance as it is they who have wronged her as well.” I remind them this time not of my stature but of the cost. None would care of my personal feelings but the displeasure of Leicester the most revered arms and slave broker now that was another matter.
My request is followed by the soldiers; I still have in my hand my sword and the blood lust in my eye. I think there is an element of fear among them as well. They drop the Amazon from the horse into a heap on the ground they are a little gentler with the once wounded warrior. I dismiss the guards with a wave of my sword. The guards reappear gently helping Puella into my new tent and three behind them with Xwpfan who is fighting all the way as she is being drug to the entrance of my tent.
”Can we put this one on the Cross?” the commander asks for my permission.
“Absolutely, but only after I am done with her, you see I still have an unfinished score to settle, this is the one who disfigured my beautiful shoulder.” I answer with an all the contempt I can muster. “Leave us now there is much to do and so little time to get it all in before Leicester arrives.” I add an evil laugh to the end of the order.
“I have a lot of work to do since we have lost around thirty soldiers to desertion and our ships as well.” the commander offers and leaves.
Scout returns and we help the others in to the tent. “I need for you to hear me out which you have no choice since you are not going anywhere. I am asking for you to open your mind and heart and really hear my words. I know what this must appear to look like but right now this is not about us as individuals- it is about the big picture. There are others out there, my army in the East of the valley and the Amazons evidently to the North and probably even the South. The battle plans are much more important than any other concern at the moment. When this camp is destroyed, and if we are still standing to tell the tale then we can sort out the small insignificant details and our petty differences. The way I see it you have two choices. We fight together to help our friends or we fight each other and help no one."

A Day In The Life
"Oh how I wish I had paid attention when they tried to teach us Latin", Zena thought. "These Roman horses will probably only respond to a Latin command. Maybe Evergreen is thinking the same thing." But they were both slung face down over the horses backs and Zena couldn't lift her head and shoulders enough to see Evergreen. "Evergreen. Who in Hades is Leara? Sister? We're all sisters. Evergreen looked well, maybe she wasn't. Maybe she was in a fever from the wound. It was only an hour's ride from the Amazon camp what could have happened in an hour? I'm always the last one.........ooof."
Zena hit the ground hard after the soldier shoved her from the horse. She shook the dirt from her eyes and hair and got up enraged. With her hands tied behind her back, she used the only weapon she could, and ran full tilt at the soldier. "Ramming speed!" she thought as she slammed him to the ground. Evergreen struggled forward but a guard threw a spear across her chest and prevented her from moving. A centurion stepped up and swiftly cracked the back of Zena's head with his staff. Zena's world went black.
In the forest Vasca and Hippolyta had remained in the bushes close to Zena's position. They would not dare move for they were under orders and would hold their position until told to do otherwise. Solaria joined them and they watched and waited, not knowing Little Gabby and Phalon were about to walk up behind them. Experience is a significant teacher. Having gathered enough wood, the Roman carpenters returned to camp to build a supply of crosses. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ phalon - 10:34am Jun 5, 2002 ET (#258 of 330)
Darn Those Puppy Dog Eyes
"I can't leave her again, Phalon", Little Gabbyfan said. She had a pleading look in her eyes that reminded Phalon of a little lost puppy. Little Dog whimpered next to her as if to second the plea.
"Listen, Little Gabbyfan, we can not possibly go in there by ourselves. It would do absolutely no good to Zena and Evergreen if we were captured also."
"If you won't help me, I will go alone!", Gabbyfan said defiantly. As she turned to go, Phalon grabbed her by the shoulder.
"Oh no you don't, little one. Use your head. You can't rush in there and take on the entire camp by yourself. What exactly do you plan to do? Single-handedly fight off hundreds of soldiers? This is provided of course, that you even get past their sentries. No, it's best to wait for the rest of the Amazons."
"Please, Phalon." The pleading puppy dog eyes again. "She's the only mother I've got now. My whole family is gone. I can not lose one more person that I love. I couldn't stand it." She straightened her shoulders and tossed her head. "I am serious. I will not sit here and wait helplessly while she and Evergreen are in the hands of those dogs!"
Phalon would have laughed if it had not been for the seriousness of the situation. A little peasant girl, dressed in tattered clothing of a day which must seem to her as a lifetime ago, armed with a staff and with Little Dog at her side, ready to take on an entire Roman legion! The thought was ludicrous. Unfortunately, Phalon knew that sometimes the heart overruled the mind, and had no doubt that Gabbyfan would charge in there defenseless if Phalon did not do something. She rolled her eyes and sighed.
"Alright, alright." Phalon looked hard at the young girl, still dressed as a peasant, but with the heart and mind of a budding Amazon warrior. Her look could work to our advantage, she thought and a plan started to formulate in her head. She said out loud, "but we will not charge in there blindly."
She heard in the distance a call from the trees. Amazon. It sounded like Joxcenia's call. Good, she thought. The rest of the Amazons must be near. She hoped and prayed to the gods that what she was about to propose to Little Gabbyfan would not get them both killed and that the Amazons were watching from their own vantage points should something go awry.
Phalon and Little Gabbyfan could not know that Zena and Evergreen were now in the Roman's main tent along with Xwpfan, Puella and Leara. Phalon only knew they had to get freely into the camp without raising suspicion. "Ok, Gabbyfan. Here is the plan..." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ phalon - 11:03am Jun 5, 2002 ET (#259 of 330)
The Mystic, the Apprentice......and Their Little Dog, Too.
Phalon had adorned both herself and Gabbyfan with colorful scarfs that she had aquired on her travels which she usually used to tie back her long hair. The end of Gabbyfan's staff had been adorned similarly, along with various colored glass vials and bottles which held herbs and potions, tied to the scarfs with rawhide tethers. On their foreheads she had drawn the shape of a new crescent moon with the end of a stick which she had charred. A little gaudy perhaps, Phalon thought, but what, if not gaudy do gypsy fortunetellers look like? As for her own weapon, she had tucked the sword into her bedroll on Agapanthus' back. They could not go in there armed, or suspicion would be raised.
A Roman sentry approached them as neared the camp. "Who are you, and where do you think you're going?" he asked.
"I am Phalon, the Great Mystic and this is my young apprentice Gabbyfan. We have come to tell of the prophecies of war", Phalon stated spreading her arms wide.

Scroll of the Dumb Scout 10
I can barely contain me desire to kill these Amazons along with the Roman dogs the two have turned out to be more alike than different. I pray to the Parthenon that I never come to know which one has scarred and hurt Leara. I am amazed that despite all that has happened is calm and maintains the order not to harm the Amazons. I am pleased to hear her say yes to the Roman commander about putting one of them on the crosses. It seems though that she is going to let them free and even wants us to fight along side them.
As I listen to Leara I get up and head outside there are more visitors to the camp. They are clean, definitely not Roman. I must know what is going on, I creep out and there are two gypsies, fortune tellers. There is something not right with this I know many of the Gypsies almost all of them have at one time or another been through the Amusement Center. We had an active log as well as archives of every know gypsy in the known world and something is not right with these two.
I hurry back to the tent hurriedly waving and telling Leara of this new development. Leara orders, “Alright let us put the Amazons back outside the tent. This could be a bad for all of us. I may not have the power to save all of them if they turn out to be an Amazon rescue party. Did you say Phalon and Gabbyfan?”
I return to motioning with my hands out of the corner of my eye catch Puella paying attention and nodding in understanding. I feel sick that she now will have the power to reveal what I have said but I am at the same time excited to know that someone else understands me.
“Well on your toes Scout, that is who they are if we play this right we might be able to get all of us out of here with them. Now please just sit still think of where you are and that you cannot take down this entire army without causing the deaths of all your friends.” Leara reminds Xwpfan and Zena as we sit them outside the tent. Leara even loosens their ropes and gives them some water.
I stand guard by the Amazons and Leara slips back in to the tent. We wait for the gypsies to join us they will find there way here this is where their sisters are being held. I am going to have a serious talk to Leara about the company she is keeping of late. I will be glad to get out of this Roman camp it makes my skin crawl. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ xwpfan - 08:04pm Jun 5, 2002 ET (#261 of 330)
Center Stage
Puella and I had been discussing our options and how to best utilize Leara when a couple of Roman guards caught us.
Puella reacted quickly, remembering she was supposed to be a wounded Roman slave, she collapsed into one of the guards arms.
Two others guards lunged at me. Wham! I hit the burly one hard in the stomach he was bent over and groaning in agonizing pain, the other guard tried to come straight at me and I flipped him, sending him flying through the air, the third one dropped Puella and drew his sword. he came running at me as if to thrust it right into me, I snared his arm and bent it backwards til he dropped his sword then I began to cut his throat but as I did the other two teamed up and tackled me to the ground.
As the Roman guards laid ontop of me I began to hyperventilate. I could not stand those Roman dogs on top of me- the feel, the smell they sickened me.
I kicked and squirmed for all I was worth-finally I freed myself enough to see one of them leading Puella towards camp. Knowing I could not let her go back in alone, I stopped fighting so I could be captured.
Puella was taken into the camp and I saw her disappear into the center tent. As my Roman guards talked as they dragged me, I could make out fragments of their conversation. They were casting lots to see who would get to be pleasured by me before they crucified me.
Disgusted and sickened by the thought I spat on them and kicked for all I was worth. The commander said, "I like her spirit- too bad it's wasted..I hope get to break her before we crucify her."
With that he pushed me through the flap of the center tent. There stood Leara with her hand on the hilt of her sword and her Roman Insignia shinning proudly.
I could not say even a word before the Commander asked Leara, " Can we put this one on this cross?
I was not surprised when I heard Leara answer,
"Absolutely, but only after I am done with her, you see I have an unfinished score to settle, This is the one who disfigigured my beautiful shoulder."
I straightened up with pride when she metioned what I had done to her. I couldn't help smiling as I remembered the moment. Strangely, I found solice and comfort in the fact that no matter what she did or who she fought for, she would always have a reminder of me.
As the commander left he unwittingly left abit of information for me. The commander was complaining to Leara how he had lost 30 solider to disertion. That meant 30 less Romans to fight!
As soon as the guard left Leara began her diatribe..."you need to hear me out...since you have no choose. You're not going anywhere. ..Blah blah blah..
I had almost tuned her out until I heard her mention that Amazons were to the North and South and the other(her) army was coming from the East. Leara finally had my undivided attention.

Flattery Will Get You Everywhere
"A mystic, eh?", asked the Roman guard, sarcastically. "So tell me, Oh Great One, what do you see in my future?"
Phalon sized him up quickly. Young - very young, and very arrogant. Probably inexperienced but feeling quite invincible. "Phalon," she thought, "you'd better make this convincing". Out loud she said, "Gabbyfan, my staff please."
As she took the staff from Gabbyfan, she once again spread her arms towards the heavens, shaking the staff. The glass vials rattled together. Phalon rolled her eyes back into her head and stared blankly ahead with only the whites of them showing. She began to mummur and sway.
"Uhm, what's she doing?", asked the Roman.
"SHHH!", said Little Gabbyfan. "She is in the spiritual world. She should be back in a moment....Uhm,...I hope."
Suddenly, Phalon opened her eyes wide, pupils back intact, and said, "I see in your future great wealth and power. A house of untold fortune....no wait, two houses. One by the sea, the other surrounded by vineyards. As many maidens dripping from your arms as you have gold chains and jewels hanging from your neck and rings on your fingers."
Little Gabbyfan stifled a giggle. Phalon turned to her and said, "You would do right girl, to stick by this fine, brave young soldier. He is definitely going places." Gabbyfan gave him her best flirtatious smile with a nose crinkle.
The Roman straightened his shoulders and beamed, "Well ladies, you may pass. The commander may want to speak with you. The main tent is usually reserved for visitors, but it is currently being occupied. I will take you an empty tent where you may wait. It is much smaller, but it will have to do for now." Then he asked looking down, "By the way, what is a mystic doing travelling with a little dog?"
"Ah, my boy, little dog today, great beast tomorrow, the day following -- who knows? What's a mystic without her familiar?"
The Roman nodded his head knowingly - but with a puzzled expression, and beckoned them on.
Once alone inside the tent, Gabbyfan nearly rolled with laughter. "Come on, Phalon. Couldn't you come up with anything better? Arms dripping with maidens? Honestly!"
"It was short notice. No matter, it got us where we need to be."
Phalon was glad for the commotion outside the tent caused from the soldiers trying to put out a blaze at what appeared to be the ammunition tent. This might make things go a bit easier and make Gabbyfan and Phalon a bit less noticeable. She bent down to Little Dog and said, "Come on, Great Beast, go find Evergreen." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ xwpfan - 11:28pm Jun 5, 2002 ET (#263 of 330)

Leara had my undivided attention. Leara's words if to be believed were giving hope to my heart.By the Gods,I hated to use Leara as a source for any kind of hope, but I realized if Leara's words about my sisters and her army were true, there might yet be a way to gain the advantage on the Romans.
As I thought how we could use the information, word came that there were two females and a little dog outside the camp. They were claiming to be Gypsies.I closed my eyes not wanting to see the expression on Zena's face... that I knew was there.
Leara appeared a bit unnerved after hearing the news. Leara had her guards move Zena, Evergreen, Puella and I myself outside to the back of the tent.
I couldn't help but wonder why not keep us hidden inside, unless she she was up to no good. No one in their right mind leaves captives outside... unless their using them as bait.
My sisters and I tried to carefully undo our bindings. Every few moments one would look up and look searchingly into the others eyes hoping that the other one had an idea what as to expect next.
Time had hardly passed when Leara and her guards came over to give us water and to loosen our bonds.
Leara returned to her tent to await the arrival of the Gypsies and left a peeping tom of a soldier to guard us.
A Middle aged Soldier was peering into Zena's tunic as he bent over to loosen Zena's bonds. Zena seized the opportunity to distract him and let him get an ample look. I chuckled as I saw he was fully distracted and was able to gently lift a small dagger off his side arm without his knowledge.
Puella further distracted the guard by talking to him and showing him her belly button tattoo.
Zena and Evergreen were bound and seated beside me. From where we sat we could see in the distance a few soldiers still struggling with the Stockpile fire.
I looked around to be sure we weren't being watched by any Romans, then I noddingly directed Zena and Evergreen's eyes to the sand in front of us.
I took the dagger and cut my bindings then I passed the dagger to Evergreen. As soon as I saw she was loose I began to draw in the sand.
I whispered,"Believe it or not, I think we are right where we need to be to win this war."Basically, we are Center stage to our own drama. We are where the action should be and is going to be!We are going to take the fight right to the heart of the Roman army!:
Evergreen looked at me like I was crazy, and there was a good chance she might've been right but I continued on.
I whispered, "First, off let me show you how I figure we are all positioned. With my finger in the sand I drew a huge pointed mountain for Mount Olympus along with a little stick figure, then I drew a squiggly line for the Pinios river.
To the right of the river I drew little mountains signifying the Pindus mountains and then I drew to the further left huge waves signifying the Agean Sea, with several little stick figures. To the further South I drew little stick figures and then in the middle I drew a big circle with an X signifying our position .
I whispered "If Leara is correct we can attack the Romans not only from these three positions but also from the inside out, leaving them only one point of retreat or fall back postion-the Pindus mountains -If they get to the Pindus moutains. The mountains are rough terrain the Romans would have a rough time surviving there."
Zena spoke up"I think before we do anything more we have to find out if those Gypsies are who we think they are.I want us to be extra careful not to put their lives in any more peril."
We all nodded and sat there pretending to still be bound. There little we could do until we could coordinate our efforts with our sisters on the outside.
However,it did feel quite surreal to be just sitting and waiting in a Roman camp waiting for a war to break out.
I had just turned to tell Puella of a plan when I heard Zena gasp, for there sat little dog with his tail wagging...

TAD 15 Reunion ...
I have spent several hours waiting for the monster gently coaxing it to rise up and claim the victory over me. His reign is cut short by the necessity to fulfill my oath to be sure Puella is free. I hate that the monster but it makes my behaving like a Roman easily convincing I am angry, arrogant, greedy for everything, and fierce. I notice that my sword has not left my hand since I rode in to this camp but it is a natural extension of me.
My mind is cluttered with all the possibilities of ways things could turn out, but my heart is now heavy. I have never been this close to failing at a sworn oath and to Madula no less. I have never had the monster inside me this close to the surface and ready to be out of control. I had to put them all but Puella outside the tent I can not handle the look that they are sending my way like I am a filthy Roman guilty of betraying them. I am caught in this part being everything that I hate but, the monster so far has saved us. A tear escapes from my eye and bounces on my sword I am so glad they are not inside to see this.
This is to be our final chapter for if we survive the victor will promptly carry out our execution. I can only hope that the Amazons are not in to prolonged torture but, my shoulder pains me to remind me differently. I am glad that my last scroll is already complete and I do not have to worry about that any longer.
Scout clangs her sword softly signaling that the guests are about to arrive. I wipe my eye, take a deep breath and get up to greet the rescue party. Have strength! I think to myself this is not yet over. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ zena - 11:39am Jun 6, 2002 ET (#265 of 330) "Agere Sequitur Esse"
See No Evil I
"Amazon drums in my head", Zena thought as she struggled to come to full conciousness. "No, Amazon drums ARE my head!" She had been moved twice without her knowing about it: once from the horses where she had successfully crushed a soldiers ribs, and once from the inside of the tent where she had been taken with Evergreen. Now she was seated on the ground with her hands still tied outside somewhere.
Zena opened her eyes slowly, expecting a burst of light to make her wince but to her surprise there was no light. "Is it night?," she thought. No, she could feel the sun and smell the heat. Beside her Evergreen saw Zena lift her head and stare out at something in the trees. "Are you all right? He hit you very hard, that filthy Roman scum," Evergreen whispered. Zena smelled burning fabric and heard water hitting sizzling metal. A large figure bent over the pair and Zena felt the heat from a body that stayed too close for too long. There was other movement, the tiny sound of metal sliding from a leather sheath, and just when Zena thought she might have to kick the figure it was gone. Evergreen cut her bonds and she relaxed a little. Near her she heard two voices, Xwpfan and someone unknown discussing a battle plan and the announcement of two gypsies with a small dog entering the camp. Zena spoke up, "I think before we do anything more we have to find out if those Gypsies are who we think they are. I want us to be extra careful not to put their lives in any more peril."
And then suddenly, she sensed a distinctly canine smell and heard a happy little presence dancing with tail wagging before her. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ zena - 12:30pm Jun 6, 2002 ET (#266 of 330) "Agere Sequitur Esse"
See No Evil II
Evergreen gave the little dog a scratch and received a good licking in return as he jumped into her arms. Her face changed as she realized that the presence of Little Dog meant that the gypsies were indeed Gabby and Phalon. She turned to Zena and realized that Zena was turned in that direction but her eyes were looking past the scene. "Zena?', Evergreen whispered. "I can't see you," Zena replied. Quickly and instictively Evergreen slid over so that their shoulders were touching and said, "I'm here." "I know," Zena said. "I'm counting on that. I can't run when the time comes and you can't wait for me. Go without me and get Phalon and Gabby free. You must be out before the Queen orders the archers to shoot. Don't argue, just do what I ask."
