Very cool, Spock. Kind of reminds me of those "subliminal messages if you play the album backwards" rumors when we were young....only this one has a good message.

BOLL!!!! OMG, it's a good thing I just finished my coffee or I'd be wiping it off the computer screen where I spewed it in a fit of laughter!

I can't even grasp the level of thinking that could create such things. Absolutely brilliant! I think I have posted about this before, but it is worth repeating. Birdnote is a 2-minute daily feature about birds and the outdoors that plays on the radio station where I work. I look forward to hearing it each day. And the website has gorgeous bird photos. birdnote.org/If you get the chance, listen to today's entry, about a barred owl. I love the wintry atmosphere this little story evokes. birdnote.org/show/barred-owl-revives

What a neat program to have on the station each day, Siren. I bookmarked the site; thanks for sharing.
And I'm glad the owl in the story flew away!
That reminds me of one of the guys at the nature center who does fantastic bird calls; the barred owl 'who cooks for you' call is one of his favorites. The lodge there has a big observation deck facing the woods, and last year at one of the night skis on torch-lit trails, he took a group of us out on the deck. He did his barred owl impressions....and the owls actually called back. Very cool to hear on a snowy winter night.

Oh how neat, Gams! Would have loved to hear those owls hooting. Such a neat sound. I may have told this story already, but on two different occasions, I have come up over a hill, driving away from my folks house at night, and have seen something large fly off a fencepost by the road. I never got a good look, but think it must have been an owl. Nothing else would be out after dark. I would love to get a look at him.
I'm glad you like the show. I really do look forward to it each day.

Although I see this bird during the day - never at night - I'd love to get a good look at him too. It's some kind of bird of prey; from talking to my bosses, "the bird people", it sounds like he's either a red-tailed hawk or some other hawk whose name I forgot. He's lived across the ravine near the top of a huge spruce for a few years now (or at least that's usually where I spot him), and has whizzed through the pillars on my porch once, scaring the cr@p out of me so that my coffee cup went flying. Once I saw him sitting on the fence alongside the driveway when I was pulling in, but took off before I had a chance to his markings clearly.
I always enjoy watching him, but the poor guy doesn't seem too well-liked in the neighborhood - smaller birds are always chasing him back into his tree, dive-bombing him along the way. A couple days ago, it was four crows who gave chase, harassing him until he landed in the spruce, then scolding for a few more minutes before they flew away.
What goes around, comes around, I guess. Last summer, I watched a couple chickadees do the same thing to a crow.

I saw that some time ago and thought it useful information. I have literally hundreds of TED related links stored away from all the talks I've seen that I wanted to save for re-viewing later and this is one. Well worth watching!

The Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders lip-synching "Call Me Maybe" parodied by troops overseas. Shown side-by-side, too funny.
Glad to see our guys can find some time to get in a little bit of fun.

Cute. (the link works without the 's' at the end of http) I put the "s" link in a clickable text link and it works, so they probably have it stored on two different servers.

Looks kind of like a graham cracker/wafer mug with fondant inside to keep the cup from leaking and getting soggy.

I don't know how the rest of you feel about guns but this article disturbs me. We could end up with foreign troops (Russians or any number of others) on US soil tasked with "Peace Keeping" against American citizens! Wouldn't the Muslims just love that. Of course, you now also must read this as well.

We could end up with foreign troops (Russians or any number of others) on US soil tasked with "Peace Keeping" against American citizens! Wouldn't the Muslims just love that. Spock, would you consider not using an adjective like "radically conservative" with the word Muslim? Unless you also believe that all Catholics molest kids or all fundamentalist Christian groups support killing doctors who perform abortions, to stereotype any group by the actions of a tiny minority of its members is not logical. Such stereotyping is only useful if you're into the rhetoric of xenophobia. Having said that, I’m not too worried about this insane knee jerk reaction about guns. I mean first the Senate did not vote to restart the ban on assault weapons. Next it voted “no” on the UN gun ban treaty. Even if the Senate had not voted as it did, I doubt the UN gun ban could withstand even the most feeble constitutional challenge. Look at the legal mess that followed England’s use of UN forces in Northern Ireland. It was a constitutional screw up like no one had seen -- and, remember, the English do not have a written constitution. And if the entire federal government suddenly lost what brains it employs and okayed the gun ban, the US would be rehearsing its initial struggle between states’ rights and federal rights. I’m not convinced that would be a bad thing. In fact, I think Thomas Jefferson got it right: “What country ever existed a century and a half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? ” I daresay the federal government is decades overdue for a kick in the rear to remind it that it serves us, we don’t serve it. scamp
