Good reply I'm just worried that too many are happy with the "status quo" that they would accept almost anything not to upset it.

Good reply I'm just worried that too many are happy with the "status quo" that they would accept almost anything not to upset it. Thanks Spock. I have to disagree with you. I don't think too many people are happy with the status quo. How could anyone be? Bush baby left a horrid mess and Obama has been completely impotent in handling it. Can anyone really buy into the few signs of economic recovery while losing money to an inflation everyone denies exists? And the mere idea of the US dollar not being the reserve currency brings to my mind England in the 1970s: three day work weeks to save electricity, riots, and a bloody mess. My fear is that people either don't get it, or are simply too lazy to care. Or that they have a monumental faith that things can't be derailed. We could do a survey right here on Whoosh. How many members grow foodstuffs? Or can their harvest? Has anyone radically changed their patterns of consumption of power, especially gas? Stopped over-consuming? It's easy for me to answer because I've been canning for years. And I do know about currencies. But does anyone else care? Having said all that, I still think Romney would have been a disaster and I don't trust the GOP to leave the cozy bed its made with the wealthy. Still, I now commute by bicycle most of the time and have continued to insist on my right to live in a largely rural setting. No, I haven't stockpiled food or turned into Mad Max. But I now accept that it will be difficult for me to save as much as I was and, with retirement not to far off, I'm admittedly nervous. What about you, Spock? How are you handling this lost decade? scamp

Today is my neighbor's birthday, and she made a video to celebrate.
She's 62 years young. The video is sort of sarcastic look the "sweet old lady" stereotype - 62 isn't old, although many might view it as such. She did it to make her friends laugh - it cracked me up; she is nothing like the woman she's portraying in the video.
We were just talking about this the other day at work (the average age of everyone there is 60; I'm the baby at 49...almost 49. Even the landscaping crews are older). Forty then is sixty today. Maybe 20 or 30 years ago, someone in their sixties might be considered old, but now, it's not just that people are living longer, they are staying young longer because of a more active lifestyle, I think.

What? What's that you say? Speak up - can't hear you! Darned children, always mumbling. When "I" was young children had more respect! Young whipper-snappers - that's what they are. If you think 40 and 60 are the same thing - you haven't been paying attention. For instance, it was 101 here today. I used to be able to come home from work and get some things done in the yard, but not any more. I have to wait a bit first for the temps to go down before I go out and do whatever outside. Even so, I can't do 'it' whatever 'it' is nearly as long - I have to take a break and that means even more time inside. Eventually you get to the point where a one afternoon project becomes a two afternoon project. I don't know about anyone else, but this is the thing about aging that bothers me. And looking at the obits is just depressing - it's no fun realizing how many of the people in that column are younger that I am. The Golden Years
I can't see, I can't pee. I can't chew, I can't scr3w. My memore shrinks, My hearing stinks. No sense of smell, I look like hell. My body is drooping, I have trouble pooping. The golden years have come at last, The golden years can kiss my @ss!

Step, my dad, always a very capable fellow, has expressed the very same frustration you have - that it takes him so much longer to get things done than it used to. He's 80 now, and still does his best at everything he does. But it is maddeningly slow, in his eyes.
Very interesting about Sealand, Spock. I had no idea.
Mia, those are pretty neat. I'm not sure they're all genuine. But they're fun, just the same.

Immeasurably sound marital advice for both sexes. I also think a lot of the thought behind it can be applied to any type of relationship - with parents, with kids, friends, and co-workers.
As for the poor guy, he probably fell into the "hindsight is always 20/20" pit.

Probably or his wife just got tired of "doing all the work" of keeping the relationship going and decided to quit.

"Doing all the work" reminds me of a bit of advice our captain (although, he wasn't my captain anymore because we got married after my tour of duty ended in the Army) gave Hubs and I when we got married. He said a couple can't view marriage as always being 50/50. Sometimes it's 80/20; other times the scale tips in the other direction. To keep the scale balanced takes work, but it's okay if it see-saws back and forth too.
It's just something that's always stuck with me as being probably one of the best pieces of advice I've ever received, not just for marriage, but for every type of relationship.

Better yet, you wouldn't have to spend any money on "pet food", just feed him the neighborhood kids!

It looked fake. And the camera guy/girl was following way too closely to not have been noticed. I'm not sure how inaccurate it was though. I did see a few concerned citizens in the background that I could tell were not a part of the skit. A couple of them had their phones in their hands. That seemed reassuring.

There's another one out now - it's a woman who walks around NYC wearing only a top and painted/sprayed on "jeans", and supposedly no one notices. Fake or not, it tells us something. We are becoming so numb to some things that we almost don't care anymore; there are people who just can't resist doing whatever stupid thing it takes to get attention and it doesn't matter how inappropriate the act is or who is affected so long as they get their attention fix.

I saw that painted-on jeans one too....or rather, I saw it made the "news"; I didn't watch the video. I agree, Stepper - there are way too many people out there doing way too much stupid stuff just to get attention.
