1The other day I got hung up on thinking about mermaids. Like, why does their lower half have scales? Is not a mermaid a mammal? 2So, therefore, wouldn't their lower half be skin? Such as a whales, or a dolphins?
3To me, soft, smooth dolphin-like skin would be much more appealing than scales. But what color would the lower half be? Black? Gray? Blue-gray? Blue-green? Would it change colors with their environment?
And I decided that the way to know the sexually mature mermaids from the non-sexually mature mermaids, is by their breast coverings. Young mermaids would have a layer of skin, (the same as on the lower half), covering their breasts. This layering would flake, and fall away when the mermaid reached adulthood. (I haven't yet come up with an idea on how to tell the sexual maturity of a merman.)
I know. I got way too much time on my hands.
So, has anyone else come up with Hypothetical Mythological Miscalculations? Do share.

Hhmmm, Joxie....out of all the weird things my mind conjures up in its spare time, I don't believe it's ever miscalculated mythical creatures....unless you count the Mything Persons thread, but that was mythcalculated on purpose; I should've got five to ten for premeditated murder of the myths.
The other day though, I did give a few mythical creatures physical attributes I'm sure were purely made up on the spot. LX was thumbing through a 'how to draw' book of BP's, came upon the mythical creatures chapter and decided to test me. She called out the creature, and I was supposed to describe it. I gave her an eye-roll and a half-hearted effort....at first. Instead of describing it in words, I acted it out. Cyclops, ogre, centaur, griffin, etc, blah, blah, blah. When it came to unicorn, I stuck my hand up to my forehead, with my index finger pointed straight out. Apparently, my thumb was pointed to the left. LX said I was not a unicorn, but had the big "L" for loser on my forehead instead, therefore I failed the "test".
Pfft! Does anybody believe such things as unicorns really exist? And if nobody believes you exist, what are you? You're a loser, that's what. HA! So yes, a unicorn has a big old loser "L" smack dab in the center of its horned forehead. That's what I'm going with anyway.
The Mom is always right myth persists!

Yeah, I have no clue where this came from.

How about centaurs? I don't think in any ep of Xena or Hercules I have seen a female centaur. What would you call her , a centauress? And a mating of a centaur and a human female-does it always produce another centaur?(Of course there are some details of that mating I'd rather not think about.)

I did see a show where there was a female centaur, (I think it was on 'The Beastmaster'), but I don't think there were any in mythology. And as for the mating between a human female and a centaur ... all female infants are human, and all male infants are centaurs. Which is why I thought that the Amazons and Centaurs would have made better allies than enemies. Since centaurs are a male group, and the Amazons are a female group, the male children would go to the centaurs, and the female children would stay with the Amazons. And being that both groups are parents of children in the other group, they would fight together to keep both groups safe. Maybe I just overthunk it.

the only thing i ever saw that had female centaurs in it was fantasia. but then again, i really don't watch that much tv. i watch all my xena and charmed and csi online. *shrugs* i never really thought about there not being any female centaurs though.
as for the mermaids.... i didn't ever think they actually WERE mammals. i always thought it would be impossible for them to be mammals because of how their bodies are designed. they don't really have... you know... naughty bits. *shrugs* but that's just my thoughts on it and i'm a weirdo. and if they aren't mammals, then it would make perfect sense for them to have scales like a fish instead of smooth skin like a dolphin.

Isn't a dolphin's "naughty bits" hidden? If so, then why not a mermaids?

A couple mammals actually do have scales. Or parts that resemble scales, anyway. A pangolin, for instance, which lives in Africa and Asia, has scalelike plates that are actually modified hairs. Then there's the armadillo. It's possible that the "scales" mermaids have aren't actually scales. This would make them similar to the pangolin or armadillo. Don't mind me, I am the queen of completely useless information. LOL.

Glad you like that theory. Any other things you were wondering about mythological animals?

Contrived stupid boredom questions:
Why do centaurs have four legs plus two arms? Didn't two of our mammal legs evolve into arms when we stood up? Does having six limbs make centaurs technically insects?
Does Neptune have a pneumatic neuro-muscular system? The big Xena Neptune who's apparently made out of water I mean.

About female centaurs, I think in Hooves and Harlots I have seen a centaur girl at the end of the episode, or was it a boy?
